In an interview with The Nerdist, famed comics writer Grant Morrison, writer of the upcoming graphic novel Wonder Woman: Earth One, believes the latest trailer for the upcoming big-screener, Superman v. Batman: Dawn of Justice, goes against the core mythology of Wonder Woman: “[The warrior woman thing is] not what [Wonder Woman creator] William Marston wanted, that’s not what he wanted at all! His original concept for Wonder Woman was an answer to comics that he thought were filled with images of blood-curdling masculinity, and you see the latest shots of Gal Gadot [now playing the character] in the costume, and it’s all sword and shield and her snarling at the camera. Marston’s Diana was a doctor, a healer, a scientist….”

Grant Morrison is most certainly capable of distilling Superman down into a few words, especially when introducing what has since become considered one of the greatest stories of all time of the iconic character.

Another master of the DC Universe is Bruce Timm, the mastermind behind Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League and Batman Beyond (to name a few).

Timm is back in with his latest project, an alternate reality version of Justice League with Justice League: Gods and Monsters, which debuted on Machinima last month with three shorts and has been released this week as a feature length animated movie.

These new interpretations include Superman / Hernan Guerra (Benjamin Bratt, 24, Modern Family), the spawn of General Zod and Lara Lor Van’s DNA (in vitro, you pervs) raised by a Mexican farming family.

Batman is the creature of the night we know in our world as Man-Bat, Kurt Langstrom (Michael C. Hall, Dexter).

Rounding out the un-holy trinity is Bekka, granddaughter of Highfather from New Genesis aka Wonder Woman (Tamara Taylor, Bones, Lost).

With a reimagined DC Universe including dozens of Easter Eggs and a President Amanda Waller calling the shots, Alan Burnett (Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Beyond) and Timm’s PG-13 alternate reality gets a little racier than The Animated Series ever could. A member of the new guard for DCAU Sam Liu (Batman: Year One, All-Star Superman) directs.

In her debut novel and first book of her trilogy, Rhonda Mason tells the tale of a princess forced to flee her home world after escaping an assassination attempt on her family’s life.

Kayla Reinunom flees to the grimiest sector of her space and carves out a living fighting in gladiator style battles as the enigmatic Shadow Panthe.

Thanks to her imperial training and her skill in the arena, Kayla unwittingly attracts the attention of the forces she fled from to begin with and suddenly finds herself back in a world that’s familiar yet strange all at once.

If you are a fan of Frank Hebert’s Dune, then you’ll fine yourself experiencing a sense of déjà vu as you read Mason’s The Empress Games.

As I delved into the story Mason was weaving, the incredibly similar tones to Dune annoyed me. I felt like this book/story was a rip off – from the Wyrd race to the psi powers, everything felt like a re-hash of Dune’s tale.

Like Paul Atreidies, Kayla is a formidable warrior, has suffered personal tragedy in her life and has to care for a weaker family member in a hostile environment.

Paul had to care for his mother, while Kayla has to care for her younger brother. Kayla’s favorite weapons of choice were Krys knives, just like that of the Fremen of dune. So many similarities! It was almost infuriating.

But just when I thought I would burst, the story began to take a turn of its own.

Dear Lord, what in the world is in Boston’s water that lead to the likes of both Tony Millionaire and Johnny Ryan?

Is it the overwhelming Puritanism?

Is it the oppressive champagne liberalism?

Is it the stifling false intellectualism?

Or does it all stem from the mania of the winter in the little town that could be a city?

Regardless of the cause(s), this city I once inhabited managed to produce two uniquely vulgar and quite famous cartoonists.

Both possess a defiant lewdness that makes me want to shower after reading their work, and both have an overwhelming penchant for fecal matter and venereal disease that gives me the heebie jeebies in the very worst way.

Both sing odes to the revolting and the shocking, and after reading Millionaire’s Maakies and Ryan’s Angry Youth Comix, I must say I am glad I’m no longer in the city that spurned these works.

In April of this year, Fantagraphics collected the first fourteen issues of Ryan’s Angry Youth Comix into a massive collection of excrement, puss, and piss. With beastiality, rape, prostitution, genitalia, and dismemberment added into that wonderful collection of liquid and semi-solid matter, Angry Youth Comix goes for the gold in tackling every imaginable taboo in the most overt and obnoxious way.

A few weeks back I reviewed Ray Harrington's documentary, Be a Man.

Having been raised by women and without a male role model, stand-up comedian Ray decides upon learning that his wife is pregnant, that he needs to experience and document the things he feels are necessary traits in a man before becoming a father.

The film is fantastic; funny and emotional and highly recommended. I recently spoke with Ray about making the film, comedy and where audiences would be able to see it.

As I come up on a year since my father died of cancer last August, I have been reflecting on what this past year has been.

Amid the grief, distress, anxiety and pain, there has been transformation and growth. Such a major uprooting in my life illuminated all the roots my father left behind in making me who I am today.

All of this, spurred by death.

That is what this year has been for me: the year of death. But it goes deeper than this time of personal challenge, into the personal manifestation of a deep social and political reality.

This year of death in my family was compounded by the seemingly endless stories of black death at the hands of police. My father died on the same day John Crawford III was shot to death in an Ohio Walmart while holding a toy BB gun for sale at the store. Four days after that, Michael Brown was shot dead in Ferguson, Mo., and left on summer asphalt for hours.

And four days before my first fatherless Father’s Day, a white supremacist shot nine black people at a church in Charleston, S.C.

So much death. Too much death. Always lurking, ever in wait to take my body away simply for looking as it does.

I’ve had many reactions to this year of death, but mainly I refer to it as the feeling of my head on fire – a combination of hyper-consciousness, rage, fear, anxiety, disappointment.

Imagine for a moment you realize your life is about to change forever.

The people, the life, even the activities you once knew and partook in will now be just a thought in the wind.

What would you do? Would you cry in some corner or confront it head-on?

If you’re Craig you lie to your girlfriend and take on the open road in a solo road trip to visit the world’s largest things across the southern United States.

Everything seems simple enough, young man starting life, possibly hesitant and fearful, but Bryan Reisberg's little indie is much more than what meets the surface.

Craig played by Harry Lloyd is at his core a scared little boy, hiding from his impending responsibilities as a young father, buying and moving into a house in San Francisco with his girlfriend Allison (Elizabeth Gray). His actions appear selfish and downright unappealing but sometimes people just need to be by themselves when facing a life change.

The plot is barebones at best and the writing is simple. If you’re looking for mind-blowing performances, a unique cast of characters and great set pieces this movie is not for you. The story is slow; nothing happens and at times it loses its way.

All in all, it was an excellent year for television.

From the dragon ride on Game of Thrones to bidding farewell to Don Draper to the vagina-based comedy antics of Amy Schumer, television continues to push boundaries and redefine itself, even without Breaking Bad on the air.

It seems that everyone put their best foot forward this year.

And while there is no such thing as an Primetime Emmy list without its fair share of snubs (cough Sons of Anarchy cough), it was a tough field with many, many, many worthy competitors.

And a few of them are not even from HBO.

Less than a year after Mickey Mouse’s debut in Steamboat Willie, the Walt Disney Studio embarked on a decade-long series of music-driven shorts whose breakthroughs would forever change the direction of animation and would have a massive impact on popular culture. The 75 cartoons - called Silly Symphonies - pioneered “three-strip” Technicolor, introduced Donald Duck, and created a pop music phenomenon with “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” They won seven Academy Awards® for Best Short Subject (Cartoon) between 1932 and 1939.

The Silly Symphony Collection is a first-of-its-kind box set from Walt Disney Records and Fairfax Classics featuring the complete restored soundtracks from all 75 Silly Symphony shorts from 1929-1939, with more than 8 hours of music over 16 vinyl LPs.

The limited edition collection is housed in 8 tip-on gatefold jackets with original animation art in a beautifully constructed foil-stamped and numbered slipcase. Soundtracks of Disney classics such as The Skeleton Dance by Carl Stalling, Three Little Pigs by Frank Churchill, and Donald Duck’s debut The Wise Little Hen by Leigh Harline will be presented in full for the first time ever on record. Kaufman and Russell Merritt, authors of the definitive book on the series, Walt Disney's Silly Symphonies: A Companion to the Classic Cartoon Series.

Kaufman adds, "It's well known that the Silly Symphonies were built around music, but most of us can't watch the films without being distracted by the visuals. When we last left our platinum-haired spellcaster, Sabrina was on the verge of going full-witch. She was knee-deep in the black arts when during the ceremony, her boy toy Harvey made a surprise appearance to the little groovy ghoulie get-together.

As Harvey runs for his life, Sabrina is left to deal with the wrath of the coven, who are unsympathetic to the teen dream, despite the fact she caught unawares and was set up by Madam Satan.

So while Sabrina deals with the fallout, Harvey must contend with doppelganger Sabrina and her lip-locking skills.
