FLCL - A Coming of Age Anime Not For The Casual Viewer

By MaxGladstone
I can’t show my favorite anime to most people.  They don’t speak the language, you see.

I don’t mean Japanese—that’s what the subtitles are for.

Let me explain.

The show in question, FLCL, is a deeply weird six-episode Japanese cartoon about a kid with robots literally coming out of his head, and his weird tangled relationship with an alien cop who's also a bassist; his single dad; and the ex-girlfriend of his baseball-playing brother.

Also, did I mention the literal robots literally coming out of his literal head?  The animation’s as inspired as it is surreal.

The soundtrack, by the Pillows, deserves medals.  I don’t know what kind.  Find some, chloroform whoever’s wearing them at the moment, and throw said medals at the Pillows.

I am not a lawyer, and the above is not legal advice.

Wrestling and Family

This past Monday night, thanks to grandparent intervention, both my wife and I were able to sneak away from our parenting duties to take in WWE’s Monday Night Raw live at Atlanta’s Philip’s Arena.

In fact, not only did we get out of the house, but we were able to so with other adults.

If you’re a fan of professional wrestling then you know that for most, it’s a family thing. Most of us have fond memories of being exposed to the squared circle thanks to at least one of out parents.

Take my home growing up, for instance. After cartoons, Saturday mornings were spent with me, my brother and my dad watching random professional wrestling shows, be it on TBS, USA or local access.

This is the case for most of my friends who were into wrestling as well.

Credited for helping to modernize the Western genre when it premiered in 2011, the top-rated AMC mainstay, Hell on Wheels, enters its fifth and final season this July. In the first seven episodes being aired in 2015, the rough and tumble drama delves into the conflicts between the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads, as they race toward completion. And as the series itself races towards a finale five years in the making -- with seven new episodes airing this summer, and the final seven following in 2016 -- the new season pulls out of the station on Saturday, July 18 at 9:00pm ET/PT. The next day, co-producer Entertainment One (eOne) will begin to release each episode for purchase on leading digital platforms the day after their premieres.

Starring Anson Mount and Colm Meaney, Hell on Wheels examines the institutionalized greed and corruption behind the building of America’s Transcontinental Railroad as loyalties are abandoned and the race between the Central Pacific and Union Pacific lines intensifies. In season 5, Cullen Bohannon (Mount) finds himself a stranger in a strange land – the mountain town of Truckee, Calif., home to the Central Pacific Railroad. This rough railroad town teems with thousands of Chinese workers, foreign in language, culture and traditions.  Despite the challenges of corralling his new workforce, Cullen leads the Herculean effort to tunnel through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, sometimes achieving only inches a day in the race to complete the first Transcontinental Railroad. In addition to Mount and Meaney, Hell on Wheels stars Christopher Heyerdahl, Robin McLeavy, Jennifer Ferrin, Phil Burke and Dohn Norwood, and welcomes new series regulars Tim Guinee, Reg Rogers, Byron Mann and Tzi Ma.

And thanks to our friends at Entertainment One, we're giving away three $10.00 Amazon gift cards so you can check out the new season of Hell on Wheels for yourself!

For the funniest trip you’ll take this summer, tune in to the second season premiere of NBC’s hit single camera sitcom Welcome to Sweden on July 19.  And, the day following the debut of the acclaimed series from executive producers and siblings Greg & Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”), punch your passport for more laughs as co-producer Entertainment One (eOne) will release the premiere episode to download or stream on all leading digital platforms.  Additional episodes will be released weekly following their broadcast premieres.

Based on Greg Poehler’s true-life story about Bruce, a New York accountant who falls in love with a Swedish girl, Emma, and follows his heart to Sweden, the series is NBC’s second-most-watched summer comedy in the last 10 years.  And, this season, the series welcomes Jason Priestley (“Call Me Fitz”, “Haven”, “Beverly Hills, 90210), Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda, School of Rock) and Paul Simon as themselves and Neve Campbell (Scream, “Party of Five”), who joins the cast in a multi-episode story arc as Diane, an American who gets transferred to Stockholm for work as the head of marketing at Emma’s bank.  Against the backdrop of a cold, dark and icy Swedish winter, season two follows Bruce and Emma’s engagement as they navigate unexpected career transitions, unfamiliar customs and meddlesome relatives.

In support of the returning sitcom, eOne also invites comedy lovers and aspiring comedians to enter the “Laugh Your Way to Sweden” Video Contest.  Searching the nation for the best original comedy short (up to :60 seconds in length) with the “Fish-Out-of-Water” theme, videos will be voted on by the public at LaughYourWayToSweden.com.  The top 10 videos with the most votes will move on to the final round where they will be judged by a celebrity panel, including cast members Greg Poehler, Illeana Douglas, Patrick Duffy, Jason Priestly, Neve Campbell and others.  One grand prize winner will be awarded a trip to Sweden for two and an exclusive visit to the Stockholm-based Welcome to Sweden set to meet the cast.  Additionally, the winning video will appear as a special bonus feature on the SEASON TWO DVD.  The LaughYourWayToSweden.com contest runs through July 31.

And thanks to our friends at Entertainment One, we're giving away three $10.00 iTunes gift cards so you can check out the new season of Welcome To Sweden for yourself!

TIGER ELECTRONICS: Diarrhea in Your Hand, Batteries Not Included

Wow!  Forty articles!  I actually did forty of these things - which is more of a commitment than I have ever made to anything - including my ex-wife!  Since this is such a monumental occasion, I'm writing this at the Flashback to the Present anniversary party at my local bar.

Just me, my broken-down Brother WP word processer, and a double whiskey.

Which is kind of sad if you think about it...

Well, in any case, I'm going to review something special for this edition of Flashback to the Present.

Something we all know and love.  Something that was the biggest disappointment of my childhood.

The Tiger Electronics Handheld Toys.

INFOGRAPHIC - 40 Years of Personal Computing

0
0

Computers have probably been around longer than you think.

Charles Babbage began to theorize about computers in the early 1800s, imagining a machine that could automatically calculate basic arithmetic and print out the results. After reading about his “Analytical Engine,” Ada Lovelace not only wrote the very first computer program, but predicted the future of powerful computers that could “compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music of any degree of complexity or extent,” and perform any task that could be translated into binary code.

While the military found uses for “automatic calculating machines” using punchtapes in the 30s and 40s, it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that businesses began to use computers as well.

When you think about early computers, what comes to mind probably isn’t the Analytical Engine, but the huge mainframe computers that came into use in the 1950s and 60s, like th IBM 1401. Thousands of 1401s were sold to businesses which used them to replace accounting machines and calculators. These mainframes had a hefty pricetag, starting at $2500 per month (equivalent to about $20,000 today).

Back then, it was accepted that computers were for the government, research laboratories, and big businesses who needed to automate complex calculations and process large amounts of data. Computers tallied votes, scored sports games, and calculated ballistics.

No one imagined that computers would have a use in personal households. What individual person had a need to process large amounts of data at home?

Even when the first microcomputers started coming out in the 1970s and 80s, many computer companies just didn’t see a market for them outside of businesses. The first microcomputers were designed for use by small businesses who couldn’t afford larger computers, but then started to be used in the home as well.

Many early computer hobbyists got their start on these early computers, and it was only a matter of time until computer companies recognized the potential of the personal computer, and started building and marketing computers for individual home use.

In such a short history of personal computing, we’ve come a long way! Here’s how the journey unfolded. Do you remember using any of the classic computers listed below?

We’re All Somebody Else’s Mutants - Danger Rooms Season Finale

0
0

Imagine a world where some people were so hung up on the way another group of people looked or dressed or what they believed in, and that group had members that had similar hang ups about the first.

Don’t have to imagine?

Yeah. That’s the sad reality of, well, reality. And it’s at the core of what the X-Men have long been about throughout the past half century and then some.

For those playing catch up, the X-Men fight a world in which humans and mutants—those born with powers and abilities, sometimes even resulting in physical mutations like blue skin, etc.—can live in peaceful coexistence.

And after over 60 years, that dream has yet to be realized.

A lot of that is due to bigots like these chuckleheads.

The funny thing about the Marvel Universe—and I mean strange as balls funny, not laugh at the moron who lost his multimillion dollar NFL contract for playing with fireworks funny—is that most of the humans seem to be cool with the Fantastic Four, even with a guy made out of rocks, but lose their collective shit at the idea that someone like Jean Grey, with no obvious mutations, exist.

So, basically, it becomes a matter not of the powers they possess—though anti-mutant hate groups throw that around—but rather that they were born a certain way.

The CRITERION Cult - The Basics

0

Running until the end of this month, Barnes and Noble's coveted 50% off Criterion Collection sale has become a targeted rite of passage for obsessive cinephiles.

Basically, it's a time when the usually obscenely overpriced Blu-rays and DVDs are offered at normal retail prices.

But this is all justified, given Criterion's incredible devotion to restoration, research and, let's face it, cover art.

Every release comes with a fair amount of bonus material, liner notes, and occasionally a slip box. Compared with the standard Blu-ray release from a major studio, even for new films, and you've got a fair argument for the hefty unit prices.

My Criterion collection started with their original laserdisc releases, or I should say with a CD-Rom catalogue of the laserdiscs called Criterion Goes to the Movies.  The disc contained an impressive interactive encyclopedia of trailers, factoids and images.

And in 1994, it was absolutely mind-freakin'-blowing to watch these tiny little Quicktime videos on your computer.

Video.

On.

Your.

Computer.

It was a big deal, trust me.
