AVENGERS: AOU Versus FURY ROAD and Yet Another Risible Remake of an ’80s Classic

The month of May saw the release of two geek-friendly sequels, one the swift family-friendly follow-up to a billion-dollar superhero all-star assembly, and the other the long-awaited continuation of a gritty post-apocalyptic revenge saga whose previous entry came out thirty years ago. Avengers: Age of Ultron and Mad Max: Fury Road are both aimed at the same action/adventure fanboy crowd, but the two movies—and their respective promotional campaigns—couldn’t be more different in tone and execution.

Everybody expected Avengers: Age of Ulton to open huge and amass a sizeable profit, even with its ludicrous $250M production price tag, but what I wasn’t prepared for was just how dispiriting the whole affair would turn out to be. I enjoyed the movie’s shiny visual effects and dweeby humor, and the screenplay allows every Avenger his or her moment in the spotlight, but its overall immediate impact lasted about as long as a fart in the breeze.

Did I truly pay for and watch the actual movie, or am I merely recalling the bombardment of Age of Ultron pre-release trailers and television commercials?

The Pull List Tackles 'HE-MAN: THE ETERNITY WAR' #1-6

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe wasn’t just a popular cartoon, but it was an animated series that defined a generation. Those who grew up in the 1980’s fondly remember the show for its campy vibe and the colorful cast of characters from Eternia.

Oh, and who can forget the fun filled plastic epidemic that was unleashed onto the general public by Mattel? Children were enamored for hours on end with a plethora of figures, vehicles, and play-sets

Parents, on the other hand, wondered what the difference was between Battle Damage He-Man and Thunder Punch He-Man as their bank account was drained in increments of $5.99.

DC Comics currently owns the comic book rights to this beloved franchise and released a six issue mini-series in 2013 followed by the release of an on-going series later that year.

While there are some great story-lines such as Orko turning evil, most of the story were dull due to poor execution. Also, the dialog painfully failed at taking a pages out of the Game of Thrones playbook.

British writer Dan Abnett has taken the helm of the newest installment of the series, He-Man: The Eternity War. Along with artist Pop Mhan and colorist Mark Roberts, this trio have created a synergy that has taken the campiness out of the equation while sticking to the core essential values that made fans absolutely adore MOTU.

There has always been this untapped mythology that the re-imagined 2002 animated series did a decent job of tapping into, but Abnett and company establish new folklore that adds to the mythos of we already know.

Let’s dive into the first six issues of the series.

Disney unveiled “the future of play” today in Los Angeles: Playmation is an interactive way to play that gets kids up and running as one of The Avengers instead of sitting on the couch. The first product (due out this October) is the Playmation Marvel's Avengers game that lets kids don Iron Man's iconic glove to deliver palm cannon blasts and freeze rays in missions dictated by Tony Stark's AI,  J.A.R.V.I.S.

We watched a little girl named Sydney demonstrate a five-minute mission where she had to sneak up on Iron Skull (Red Skull after he upgrades to an Iron Man-style suit), then run or hide at appropriate moments and fire repeatedly to defeat the villain. When you're hit, you feel it in the palm sensors of the glove.

Dick Miller pretty much exemplifies the term Character Actor.

While handsome, he never really had leading-man looks or stature (though he did have a couple of leading roles during his Roger Corman years).

He has held the screen confidently, even while sharing it with the likes of De Niro, Schwarzenegger, Nicholson, Boris Karloff, Dennis Quaid, Meg Ryan, John Goodman, Kurt Russell and Tom Hanks (to name but a few), and in many cases, has stolen scenes outright from A-list talent.

His brash, rat-tat-tat, seen-it-all delivery is beloved by fans, many of whom first came to recognize Miller as a recurring player in the films of Joe Dante (most notably in The Howling and the Gremlins films) and by his memorable cameo in the first Terminator.

The new documentary, That Guy Dick Miller, is a highly entertaining look at the life and career of Miller, with commentary and reminiscences from Dante, Corman, Leonard Maltin, Robert Forster, Allan Arkush, John Sayles, Mary Woronov, etc. as well as Lainie Miller, his beloved wife with whom he has been affectionately bickering (much to the amusement of Dante and, it’s readily apparent, themselves) for decades.

GAME OF THRONES Needs a Female Equivalent of Tyrion

It’s happened every season, but this year the criticism against how women are portrayed on Game of Thrones has ratcheted up. While much of the ire has been focused on violence against women, I’d argue that an even larger problem is that the show believes that the most important characteristic of a woman is their physical attractiveness (and that’s not to minimize the violence issue).

Characters on Game of Thrones derive their strength from one or more of the following three characteristics: shrewdness, physical strength, and beauty. (There’s a forth rogue characteristic, honor which works in the short term but ultimately gets people killed).

Among the primary female characters only beauty and strength are utilized, and for most of the characters it’s just beauty.

Breaking down barriers and erasing labels, the smart, honest, hilarious comedy The DUFF arrives on Digital HD on May 26th and will follow on Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital HD), DVD (plus Digital) and On Demand on June 9th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment and CBS Films.

Based on the best-selling book by Kody Keplinger, The DUFF reveals that while social media can amplify even the little things, high school social hierarchy hasn’t changed since the John Hughes era.

Directed by Academy Award winner Ari Sandel (Best Live Action Short Film, West Bank Story, 2006), The DUFF features some of today’s hottest stars, including Mae Whitman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Robbie Amell (TV’s “The Flash”), Bella Thorne (Blended), Bianca Santos (Ouija), Skyler Samuels (upcoming TV’s “Scream Queens”) Romany Malco (Showtime’s “Weeds”), Nick Eversman (Wild) along with Ken Jeong (TV’s “Community”) and Allison Janney (TV’s “Mom”).

Bianca’s (Whitman) universe turns upside down when she learns that her high school refers to her as a “DUFF” (Designated Ugly Fat Friend). Hoping to erase that label, she enlists the help of a charming jock (Amell) and her favorite teacher (Jeong). Together they’ll face the school’s mean girl (Thorne) and remind everyone that we are all someone’s DUFF…and that’s totally fine.

Special features on the home entertainment release of The DUFF include three featurettes looking at the making of the film, a look behind the scenes at the premiere, character profiles and a gag reel.

And we're giving away a copy!

GLANDS: Transplantation and Transformation in Classic Sci-Fi Horror Films

$
0
0
When we think of bodily transformation in science fiction or horror films, we tend to imagine things happening at the cellular level, perhaps through a virus, or at the DNA level though computer-driven engineering.

But for the first several decades of sci-fi horror, transformations were envisioned as the result of tissue and organ transplants: specifically, gland transplantation.  Typically, unspecified endocrine glands are transplanted from animals into people - or from people into animals - thereby creating a human-animal hybrid.

In the films, the experiments are often successful scientifically... but they inevitably lead to horrible social or psychological effects in their subjects.

Most of the subjects are unwilling victims to begin with, so is it any wonder they become psychotic when they realize they are no longer themselves?

A BLIND BARGAIN (1922)

I believe this is the very first gland transplant movie.  Unfortunately, the film is lost.  But we have the story and several stills, so we know that a mad doctor transplants ape glands and blood into a hapless human victim.

He tricks our hero into submitting to an operation, but he is foiled when one of his failed quasi-human simians attacks him and snaps his spine.

Lon Chaney played two roles: the doctor, looking like an evil Sigmund Freud, and the ape-man, looking like the Hunchback of Notre Dame with extra big teeth.  Tod Browning (of Dracula fame) directed.

ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932)

Glands are mentioned only in passing, but we'd be remiss if we didn't include this famously gruesome horror from pre-Code Hollywood.

Unlike other films on the list in which people are transformed into animals, Lost Souls takes the opposite tack to depict animals being transformed into people.  A cold-hearted authoritarian scientist (played with devilish delight by Charles Laughton) operates on the animals in a "House of Pain" until they start to turn human.

Most of the victims get stuck halfway between animal and human, but they try to talk themselves into being human.  "Are we not men..?" asks a hairy-headed Bela Lugosi.  The original source was H.G. Wells's  Island of Dr. Moreau.

TORTURE SHIP (1939).  It's mostly a crime movie, with little attention paid to the medical procedures.  But the concept is clear: a well-meaning but misguided doctor traps criminals on a chartered ship, hoping to cure their criminal tendencies through gland transplants.

But he must take glands from an evil person first, then temporarily transplant them into a good person, then transplant them back to an evil person in order to cure them.

It's pretty convoluted and silly, but it's only an hour long and moves at a very fast pace.  No animal glands are involved in this one.

It was vaguely (very vaguely) suggested by Jack London's first published story.

THE CORPSE VANISHES (1942)

At the very least, human "gland fluid" (if not the gland itself) gets transplanted in this strange horror-mystery co-produced by Sam Katzman.

Bela Lugosi plays a mad doctor keeping his ailing wife alive by injecting her with fluid drawn from dead virgins.

Bonus: the dwarf is Angelo Rossitto from Freaks and - much later - Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN (1943)

Here's the first in a trilogy which - one by one or all in a row - might comprise the best gland transplant movies ever made.  In all three, a sexy woman who is really an unsexy gorilla changes back and forth several times between being a sexy woman and being an unsexy gorilla.

So it's human glands transplanted into an ape to turn the ape into a human.

Captive Wild Woman stars the great John Carradine as the mad scientist.  The first sequel, Jungle Woman, 1944, stars J. Carrol Naish.  The second sequel, The Jungle Captive, 1945, features Rondo Hatton.

All three pictures are suspenseful since the "woman" might kill someone when in gorilla form but might form a romance with a human male when in human female form.

MESA OF LOST WOMEN (1953)

Co-directed by 60s trashmeister Ron Ormond, this strange B-picture adds a new twist to the gland transplant theme.

To create spider-women, the mad doctor first transplants human glands into spiders... but then he transplants them back into humans (sexy ladies) after the glands have absorbed spider properties.

The second half is slow, but the whole thing is good for 50s camp.  The doctor has an eyepatch and a mole!

THE UNEARTHLY (1957)

Having transplanted human glands into an animal back in Captive Wild Woman, John Carradine now transplants human glands into other humans in The Unearthly.

The hope is to extend life indefinitely, as young glands keep the body young.  Allison Hayes (the 50-Foot Woman) is his victim.  Tor Johnson (from Plan 9) is his helper.

It's a terrific B-movie with snappy dialogue, lurid gore, and several lovely ladies in various stages of undress.  If only it had a less abstract title, it might have become as famous as other 50s sleaze classics like The Brain that Wouldn't Die.

THE MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH (1959)

Made by Hammer and featuring Christopher Lee in a supporting role, Man Who Could Cheat Death seems inspired by The Unearthly yet is a partial remake of Man in Half Moon Street (1945), about a doctor who receives periodic gland transplants to keep himself young.

It's human-to-human here, so the concept is less exciting than those of our animal-to-human or human-to-animal pictures.  It's decent entertainment, but the sumptuous Victorian interiors are perhaps the main appeal.

ATOM AGE VAMPIRE (1960)

This Italian B-movie has a very odd premise.  A sympathetic mad doctor wants to save a beautiful wounded stripper with whom he has fallen in love.  But he needs fresh glands from living female victims.

Since he feels guilty about killing these victims, he temporarily turns himself into a gorilla-like beast so that he can kill without remorse, like Dr. Jekyll turning into Mr. Hyde when he wants to indulge his passions.

Where is the vampire?  Only in the title.  The movie is mediocre, but it has good gore.  It was produced by Mario Bava who would soon become famous for directing Black Sunday.

Money Makes The Gaming World Go Round

As a lover of RPGs, in both table top and video game form, I have been eagerly anticipating Elder Scrolls Online for my Xbox One console.

This is because my computer lacks the right equipment to run PC games and also because in my youth, I kind of sucked at dual wielding a keyboard and a mouse.

My lacklustre PC gaming history aside, naturally I have been super psyched up about ESO, only to discover last month that not only will I have to pay £45 for the game but in order to play I will also need to adhere to a monthly subscription charge of £15!

Understandably, I was pissed off.

Why should I have to pay an additional £15 on top of the price of a game?

Not only that, I'm also an Xbox Live Gold member so I already pay for online gaming services. I understand that ESO is an MMO like World of Warcraft and I understand subscription fees but what really twists the dagger already buried deep within my flesh is fact that Playstation Network members do not have to pay the subscription charge.

I was as angry as these guys...

THE TOP CARTOONS OF 1948

$
0
0

Well, folks, we’re nearing the end of the 1940s, but there’s still much cartoon goodness in store. 1948 was a strong year for animation: Warner Bros. and MGM were putting out some of their best films, Disney released the package feature Melody Time and UPA - after making political/advertising films throughout the ‘40s - finally scored a deal with Columbia to enter the theatrical cartoon field, releasing their first film Robin Hoodlum.

As far as new characters go, Warner Bros. debuted Hippety Hopper (introduced in Hop, Look and Listen) as well as Marvin the Martian (introduced in Haredevil Hare). Over at Famous Studios, the Little Lulu series was retired to make way for the Little Audrey series. Audrey had appeared as an extra in the 1947 film Santa’s Surprise, but 1948’s Butterscotch and Soda launched her career as a starring character.

As far as Academy Awards go, the nominees for 1948 included the Tom & Jerry short The Little Orphan (MGM), the Mickey & Pluto vehicle Mickey and the Seal (Disney), the Hubie & Bertie classic Mouse Wreckers (Warner Bros.), the Fox & Crow short Robin Hoodlum (UPA) and the Donald Duck cartoon Tea for Two Hundred (Disney), with Tom and Jerry being the eventual winners. Definitely some good ones there, but I have - criminally - not included any of them on this list (my love for Mouse Wreckers knows no bounds, but I already had three other Chuck Jones cartoons that I couldn’t cut). Also worth noting - The Woody Woodpecker Song, which debuted in the 1948 Walter Lantz cartoon Wet Blanket Policy, became the first and only song from an animated short to be nominated for Best Original Song.

Anyway, on this list you get a whole lot of Looney Tunes, along with a smattering of MGM and even a Terrytoon tossed in for good measure. Take a gander:

There are few franchises that haven't benefited from the artistic talents of Italian artist Andrea Mutti.

His artwork has serviced such legendary properties as Star Wars, Batman, G.I. Joe, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Shadow, Castle, Nathan Never, Tomb Raider, Iron Man, Mad Max: Fury Road, Conan and The Twilight Zone.

But one of Mutti's greatest strengths is capturing moments and environments we haven't seen before as he's demonstrated in much of his independent work including stints on Rebels writer Brian Wood's DMZ, Max Bemis' Evil Empire, Jason Starr's The Returning.

He's currently reunited with Brian Wood on their newest series, Rebels, which chronicles the story of the American Revolution through the eyes of Seth Abbott, a founding member of the Green Mountain Boys militia.

Andrea took some time from his very busy schedule to chat with FOG! about the book, his interest in history and his process.

This is the third installment of a three-part post about the games that you should be playing.

Parts 1 and Part 2 describe some cooperative and competitive games that are part of the recent rise in Indie and Euro boardgaming in Western Europe and the U.S., and this post moves on to three party games that are also part of this movement.

Party games are different from other sorts of games mainly in that no one really cares who wins, and the playing of the game is the fun part for everyone involved.

These games give you lots of things to think about while you are playing, and they are definitely competitive, but strategic and tactical thinking always take a second seat to fun-spirited arguing, thinking quickly on your feet, and enjoying the social dynamic of the group with which you are playing.

Before the series returns to FOX for a second season this fall, fans can now enjoy all 22 episodes – plus nearly 2 hours of extras including new featurettes, unaired scenes and a gag reel – when Warner Bros. Home Entertainment releases Gotham: The Complete First Season on September 8, 2015. This season’s #2 broadcast drama among men 18-34 will be available on Blu-ray and DVD for $60.10/$59.98 SRP.

Before there was Batman, there was Gotham City. Everyone knows the name of Commissioner Gordon, but what of his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the layers of corruption in Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains? Gotham tells the story of the world’s most iconic DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes from the very beginning, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome), this crime drama follows GCPD Detective James Gordon’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city, while also chronicling the genesis of one of the most popular DC Comics Super Heroes of our time. Although the crime drama follows Gordon’s turbulent and singular career, it also focuses on his unlikely friendship with the young Bruce Wayne – with his mentorship a crucial element in developing the mythology of Gotham City.

“We are thrilled to release Gotham: The Complete First Season on Blu-ray and DVD for fans to explore the unique origin story of Gotham and its characters” said Rosemary Markson, WBHEG Senior Vice President, Television Marketing. “With this release, fans will be able to get acquainted with the early chapters of their favorite Super Hero prior to the premiere of season two.”
