Play These Boardgames Right Now, Part 2: Competitive Games

$

This is the second installment of a three-part post about the games that you should really be playing.

For part 1, click here.

To sum up briefly, you should all be playing more games, and I’m not talking about the mass-produced and tired out games of yesteryear.  Instead, I’m talking about the games that are part of the board gaming renaissance of the last ten years or so.  Part 1 described some cooperative games that you should be playing, and this posts moves on to describing three games of a different type: competitive games.

The competitive board game hardly needs an introduction, because we’ve all played them at some point in our lives.  In these games, each player tries to make choices that will lead to victory over the other players, and usually the game ends with one clear winner.

Nevertheless, the games presented here are unlike some of the more common board games that you might have played, in that they move faster and there’s very little monotony during play.  The designers of these games have attempted in every case to make the turns go by very quickly and to involve everyone’s attention, all the time.

In these games, players don’t feel like they’re waiting around for their turns or (worse) waiting and hoping that the game will somehow, in any way possible, come to an end (I’m looking at you, Monopoly and Risk).

Here are some of the excellent competitive games available today:

Catan

Catan (formerly Settlers of Catan) has become a mainstay of table top gaming culture, and it was one of the first games to gain widespread popularity.  It’s enjoyed enormous success, and for good reason – it’s an excellent game and everyone should own a copy.

In this game, players manage resources (represented by cards that they get randomly), and they spend these resources to get victory points or develop their play areas to get more victory points later on.  There are a number of ways to win, and most of the time every player feels like she has a chance right up until the final points are counted.

The best part of this game is the resource trading that happens in every player’s turn.  All players may always trade their resources with the player who is taking a turn.

Because of this, no one is ever waiting for her turn to come, and there’s always a lot of fun shouting and deal making (“I’ll give you THREE sheep for one brick!”).

Ticket to Ride

I was initially uninspired by the theme of this game (North American railroads), but so many people recommended it to me that I finally got it, and was glad that I did.

In this game, the players try to collect sets of cards of the same color to claim train routes between cities on a map of the U.S.  These routes are worth different amounts of points, and completing these routes is the main way that players accumulate points during the game.

Each player also has secret objectives, however, which provide extra points at the end of the game if they are completed.  These secret objectives allow for players to develop a number of different strategies, and they make it possible for the player in last place to suddenly become the winner at the end of the game.

The turns in this game go by very quickly, and so players are always trying to pay attention to what everyone else is doing while at the same time trying to complete their own routes and objectives.  The result is a fast, engaging game that plays differently every time.

My family and my game club love this game, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Carcassonne

In Carcassonne, the players take turns drawing tiles, which represent small pieces of a map, and they place them on the table touching at least one other tile.  Each tile has a fun medieval land feature pictured on it, like a part of a city, parts of roads, or open fields.

In each turn, the player draws a tile and then places it against any other tile on the board so that the sides of the tiles match (rivers connect to rivers, roads to roads, cities to cities).  Then, if she wants to, the player can place a small playing piece (a “meeple”) to claim the feature on which it is placed, and the turn then goes to the next player.  The turns are so quick that even a larger game moves at a very good pace, and no game take more than an hour or so.

The great thing about this game is the great thing about any really good game.  Enjoyment and tactical/strategic flexibility do not cause complexity in the game rules.  The rules of this game are so simple that you learn them by playing one turn.  When you see what other people are doing, though, and where some of the meeples on the board are going, you immediately start thinking of options, ways to block other players, and plans based on the tiles you may draw.

Also, perhaps the most wonderful thing about the game is that playing the game requires all of the players to create a wonky kind of jigsaw-puzzle-medieval map of the countryside, and it’s always fun to look at and think about this map the end of the game.

ALOHA (review)

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by Cameron Crowe, Scott Rudin
Written and Directed by Cameron Crowe
Starring Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams,
Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride, Alec Baldwin

I’m really disappointed in Cameron Crowe.

From the genius story, script, and performances that made Jerry McGuire an Oscar-worthy and winning film, Crowe now presents the half-assed, nonsensical bullshit version that is Aloha.

And with such an incredible cast it actually hurts me to say that this film was garbage.

I can’t provide an accurate synopsis because I genuinely don’t know what this film was about.

Really. I don’t.

There’s a bit of a love triangle. There’s some corruption.

I didn’t follow.

After thirteen years a douche-bag of a dude, Brian Gilcrest (Bradley Cooper), comes to make a shady deal.

Promise, that’s all I can explain.

SAN ANDREAS (review)

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, Tripp Vinson
Screenplay by Carlton Cuse
Story by Andre Fabrizio, Jeremy Passmore
Directed by Brad Peyton
Starring Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario,
Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Paul Giamatti, Kylie Minogue

San Andreas. Loved it.

Full disclosure: I love disaster films. Climate change, volcanoes, tornados, the earth’s core, meteors, all of it.

And now we have earthquakes! So suped.

Every trope and predictable sequence that make up natural disaster films is present and executed perfectly: an opening crisis followed by a scientific explanation of the movie’s featured disaster (in this case, earthquakes), a broken family, sad dad, doe eyed mom and daughter, and a doofy love interest with a little brother, all of whom fit cliché after cliché while spewing corny lines from a near non-existent script.

And let’s revel in the glory that they are constantly running away from cracks, crevices and falling buildings that lead to everyone else’s demise but them.

Message: never follow the hoi polloi.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays Ray, a divorced and melancholy rescue pilot – he was previously a military rescuer, which explains his wild helicopter expertise.

Oddly, Mr. Johnson has the smallest role, but of course, the biggest biceps. He’s not the oh-so-intelligent and witty leader that Dennis Quaid or Pierce Brosnan is in Day After Tomorrow and Volcano, but he’s satisfyingly heroic and wears a furrowed brow with utmost dedication.

The mission of San Andreas is for The Rock to get from Los Angeles to San Francisco, his ex-wife in tow, in order to save his daughter from what will be the worst earthquake in history.

As I’m learning in my current comic book class with professor Michael Uslan, Romance Comics as genre came to prominence after the end of World War II.

Everyone hung up their collective capes, and even Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Joe Simon filled the newsstands with tales of heartbreak, secret crushes and handkerchief hand wringing.

These days, superheroes dominate the scene and the big screen, but former DC Comics editor Jannelle Asselin is resurrecting the genre over at Rosy Press and also utilizing her vast established audience for Kickstarter funding for this special project.

[Read an amazing FOG! interview with Jannelle over here with Stefan Blitz, conducted after the project was funded!]

This inaugural issue of Fresh Romance is an anthology book highlighting 3 separate stories from some of the best talent around. Kate Leth (Adventure Time, Bravest Warriors, Edward Scissorhands) starts off with a classic high school tale of locker talk and Mean Girls swagger. I’m most looking forward to the next installment for the twist introduced at the end of these pages.

Upcoming talent Sarah Vaughn (Alex + Ada) goes back to the post-Revolutionary War days for an impending tale of arranged marriage from ye olde tymes. I wasn’t expecting to go back to the age of AMC’s Turn but it was a nice place to visit and Sarah Winifred Searle’s art is divine.

‘The Ruby Equation’, the final tale by Sarah Kuhn and Sally Jane Thompson was perhaps my favorite. Without spoiling, this was the most comic-booky of the tales. Modern day cupid meets coffee shop barista. Very cute story with more to come.

Congrats on getting the ball rolling—this was a fun book, and I may have been quoted as saying, “I hate stupid love stories because they are stupid”.

Yet again, I was wrong.

Double Feature Movie Show: GASLIGHTING ABBIE

$

Have you ever wanted to drive someone insane?

Have you ever wanted to make someone believe something that’s just not true?

Well, filmmakers definitely have, and they’ve made plenty of movies about it.

Here are two that go together well.

GASLIGHT (1944)
Directed by George Cukor
Written by John Van Druten/Walter Reisch/John L Balderston
Based on a play by Patrick Hamilton

Newlyweds Gregory Anton and Paula Alquist (Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman) move in to Paula’s childhood home. The catch is that her beloved aunt was murdered there. Also, Gregory might have some dirty tricks up his sleeve. It doesn’t help that the maid, Nancy (a very young Angela Lansbury in her debut) obviously has it in for Paula. An old admirer of her aunt’s, Brian Cameron (Joseph Cotton), sees Paula and begins to investigate her husband. What’s he hiding? And why is he suddenly being so cold to his lovely young wife?

Gaslight is one of those classic movies that, sadly, people kind of forget about today. It’s also one that became its own euphemism. It was so huge upon its release that people started using the title to mean “to drive someone crazy.” It also brought Angela Lansbury to the consciousness of millions of folks during WWII who would end up being the core audience of Murder She Wrote.

It’s an amazing film that might as well be a Hitchcock film.

In fact, Hitchcock’s Rebecca would be a good double feature with Gaslight also.

But I’m going a little more esoteric with mine.

FATHER KNOWS BEST: THE COMPLETE SERIES

Just in time for Father’s Day, Shout! Factory TV presents an event the whole family can enjoy! Every episode of Father Knows Bestlands on the streaming service June 1st. Whether reliving the rosy memory of a perfect family life from the 1950s or discovering this classic sitcom for the first time, viewers from all generations will fall in love with Father Knows Best all over again

Enter the perfect family life of a General Insurance agent Jim Anderson.  Beginning in 1954, Jim would come home from his office, take off his sports jacket, put on his comfortable sweater, and deal with the everyday problems of a growing family without breaking a sweat.  His picture perfect wife Margaret is a vibrant mother of three – Betty, Bud and Kathy. To the millions who watched the six-time Primetime Emmy®-winning Father Knows Best, starring Robert Young and Jane Wyatt; Elinor Donahue, Bill Gray and Lauren Chapin, this long running TV sitcom not only captured the hearts of American viewers, but also stood as the representation of mid-century traditional family values.

In 1949, Father Knows Best? first premiered as a NBC radio sitcom. The series star Robert Young and producer Eugene B. Rodney transplanted the popular radio series into television (minus the question mark in the show’s title). The TV sitcom Father Knows Best premiered on CBS in October 1954 and has been part of the American cultural fabric ever since.

The depiction of a “typical” mid-century, middle-class, Midwestern American family from Father Knows Best is fondly remembered by many of us who grew up watching the show and rather enviously thinking: “Oh. So this is what happens in all the other houses.”   Jim Anderson (Robert Young) became the idealized American dad for many generations. Margaret Anderson (Jane Wyatt) charmed us as the levelheaded domestic diva who stood faithfully behind the strong and benevolent father. Their three children—sophisticated teen Betty (Elinor Donahue), chronically befuddled 14-year-old brother “Bud” (Billy Gray) and precocious little sister Kathy (Lauren Chapin)—faced the challenges of growing up right alongside of us. And in episode after episode, Jim and Margaret treated their children’s youthful transgressions with authority, empathy and wisdom. By the end of each half hour, we’d all learned our lesson.

THE SHOUT - 1978's Mesmerizing and Forgotten Supernatural Thriller

$

Written by Generoso Fierro

From Polish director/screenwriter (Roman Polanski’s Knife In The Water) Jerzy Skolimowski, The Shout is a faithful and visually stunning adaption of a short story written by poet Robert Graves.

A supernatural thriller shot with a non-linear narrative, The Shout uses a cricket match at a mental institution as its framing device. In the eerily scenic yards of the institution, we have Crossley (Alan Bates) a newly arrived mental patient who sits in a small shack besides a foppish, coiffed man named Robert (Tim Curry) who Crossley assists in scoring the match that features a team of loons.

Shortly after Crossley’s ranting, we soon meet the charming young couple, Rachel and Anthony Fielding (Susannah York and John Hurt) who have domesticated themselves into an almost brother and sister relationship, devoid of any carnality.

We first meet them at the nearby beach where they vividly imagine a man armed only with a sharp bone, coming towards him in a threatening manner.

Somewhat flustered, the Fieldings saunter back to their idyllic country home in Devon, England where Richard composes experimental music by mostly capturing the sounds of nature and distorting them as he sees fit.

Though Richard composes secular music, he is also the local church’s organist and despite his vicar’s plea for a resurgence of faith during Sunday services, Richard will leave the church for an illicit tryst with the wife of the local cobbler, but before he does, he will encounter Crossley.

Crossley sneaks up on Richard and immediately addresses the concept of the Christian soul and how it is “imprisoned by the body.”

He then asks, “if imprisoned, wouldn’t the soul be better off inside of a tree?”

Richard takes leave of Crossley but returns home to find him sitting in front of his house, looking for an invitation to lunch. Richard complies and soon Crossley will make his stay last much longer than anyone had hoped for.

Let's start this by saying, I like The Rock.

He's smart and extremely charismatic.  That took him from the wrestler starring in The Scorpion King to an A-list actor with his choice of projects.  This is a guy who took his cues from the choices that Schwarzenegger made when transitioning into comedy and took it further.

With such projects as several very successful Saturday Night Live hosting gigs, the Get Shorty sequel Be Cool, Get Smart, the Fast and Furious series and Pain & Gain, variety is one of the keys to his ongoing success.

Which brings us to the news of Johnson producing and starring in a remake of John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China
