Produced by Paul Feig, Jessie Henderson,
Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping
Written and Directed by Paul Feig
Starring Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham,
Rose Byrne, Miranda Hart, Bobby Cannavale,
Nargis Fakhri, Allison Janney, Jude Law

Melissa McCarthy’s latest movie Spy is a treat.

Director Paul Feig graduated McCarthy from supporting player in 2011’s Bridesmaids, to co-star in 2013’s The Heat and now, badass leading lady in Spy.

The comedic sendup of the classic James Bond formula goes back at least as far as the original 1967 Casino Royale and Get Smart but also was reinvented in the ‘90s by Mike Myers in Austin Powers.

Gadgets, plane fights, prat falls and cat-lady sweaters are what populates Spy.

Next year, Feig will take McCarthy into her next showbiz tier with Ghostbusters, where she’ll get her doctorate in ‘ensemble cast’.

Los Angeles, R.I.P.

By Erin Maxwell

Los Angeles is many things. The epicenter of the film industry, home to millions of wannabe and reality stars, a great place to patio dine in December. And a target by big budget disaster films.

This month, San Andreas, unleashed the latest of what-if scenarios on the City of Angels as the thriller offers an unrealistic take on what might occur if Los Angeles was every hit by “the big one.” Watch as buildings crumble and people run for cover as an earthquake of magnitude 9 earthquake levels the major metropolis in just a few minutes.

San Andreas is just the latest pic to take aim at Los Angeles, which has often been fertile ground over the years for big-budget disaster pics. In the last 20 years, LA has been destroyed by earthquakes, volcanoes, aliens, weather anomalies, zombies and the apocalypse.

From all the destruction, audiences can surmise two things:

1. People enjoy watch Los Angeles get destroyed

2. Filmmakers fucking hate Los Angeles

(As a lifelong resident of Los Angeles, it's hard to hate movies that take great care in making sure to wipe out key childhood memories with glee. There is something hilarious in watching the park you grew up in dissolve in hot lava, or having the memory of your first kiss become a battlefield for the US Army.)

Here is a quick look at all the ways Hollywood has attempted to wipe Los Angeles off the face of the earth:

The Retro Report: FULL HOUSE Deux Fois, Always COSTANZA, TREK 3 News & More!

In The Jerk, the 1979 big-screener, Steve Martin portrayed the white witless son of African-American sharecroppers who doesn't realize he's adopted.

When recently asked by The Hollywood Reporter if such a premise would be acceptable in today's era of heightened racial sensitivity, Martin replied, “I haven't looked at The Jerk in a long time.  But looking back, everyone was treated with such respect, and we had that fabulous opening with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee singing on the porch, two very well-known blues artists.  You might get a kind of knee-jerk reaction, but it would be hard to get a verdict in court against it.”

In either case, The Jerk, directed by Carl Reiner (of The Dick Van Dyke Show fame), remains a classic…

The hair-dye is double-cast for two TV projects based on classic TV show, Full House.

Interview conducted by Stefan Blitz

It's been almost twenty years since Brian Wood exploded onto the comics scene with his dystopian Channel Zero, which he both wrote and illustrated before he focused his energies as a graphic designer for both web and videogames.  After a brief run on Generation X under Warren Ellis, Wood returned to comics, creating Couscous Express, The Couriers, Jennie One, Pounded and Fight For Tomorrow.  In 2003, Wood left his job at Rockstar Games to focus on comics fulltime.

Since then, he's become one of comics most innovative creators.  His work includes Demo, Local, DMZ, The Northlanders, Star Wars, The Massive, Mara, The New York Four, X-Men, Ultimate Comics: X-Men, DV8 and Moon Knight.

His latest project published through Dark Horse Comics, Rebels, focuses on a homegrown militia movement formed in rural America and how the marriage of young Seth and Mercy Abbott is tested as the war for independence plays out across the colonies.

Brian took some time to discuss Rebels, his research and his upcoming projects.

JUSTICE LEAGUE MORTAL CHRONICLES Launches June 8th

From visionary producer and animator Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series), Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles turns the DC Universe upside-down.

In this dark, alternate world, telling the good guys from the bad guys is never easy: Superman is not the son of Jor-El, he’s the son of General Zod; Wonder Woman is not from peaceful Themyscira, but rather the warring nation of Ares; and Batman is more vampire-bat than man…and he’s not Bruce Wayne. It is unclear if our greatest heroes are here to protect us...or to rule us.

Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles Season 1 will launch its first episode officially on Monday, June 8 followed by episode two on Wednesday, June 10 and the third and final episode of the first season on Friday, June 12.

Bad Questions: What Not To Ask When Attending a Convention Panel

0

As convention season gets into full swing, so too does the season of terrible, terrible questions asked of professionals by fans at panels all across the country.

Obviously, not every question is terrible. Some people show up with their question A-game and posit some really insightful queries of the gathered pros.

Others, however… well, not so much.

Here’s the thing, though; I don’t think anyone sets out to ask terrible a question.  I think people get nervous and I think others just lack a certain degree of awareness.

As someone who’s been attending conventions for quite a while now and as someone who also moderates a fair share of panels, I’ve decided to compile a list of some of the most glaringly terrible questions as well as their answers.

The author (left), with comic artist extraordinaire, Tim Sale

Maybe you were planning on asking your favorite creator one of these questions sometime this summer, maybe you’ve been guilty of asking one of you favorite creators one of these questions in the past, it doesn’t matter.

What’s important is that now you’re aware and, going forward, can avoid terrible, terrible questions.

"Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's just too many captains on this island. $10,000 for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing."

It's been forty years since that shark swam up to Amity and caused a terror that threw the summer town into chaos for Mayor Vaughan and Chief Brody.  Forty years since Matt Hooper from the Oceanographic Institute joined Brody and Quint on the last voyage of the Orca to bring the shark down.

And forty years since one of the greatest monologues of all time was delivered by the great Robert Shaw.

To celebrate, we've teamed with our friends at TV Store Online to give away a Jaws t-shirt to make sure that everyone you know can see that you're an honorary Jaws.

We're giving away a JAWS Poster WhiteT-shirt to two Forces of Geek readers!

TARZAN Returns in New Book, 'RETURN TO PAL-UL-DON'

Altus Press proudly announces the first new Tarzan novel in several years!

Written by the prolific adventure writer, Will Murray, author of The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage series, Tarzan: Return to Pal-ul-don is an authorized sequel to one of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ most celebrated Tarzan novels, Tarzan the Terrible.

“Having been an Edgar Rice Burroughs fan since 1968,” says Murray, “the opportunity to bring this iconic character back to life means a great deal to me. I’ve pulled out all the stops to faithfully replicate the storytelling style of the great Edgar Rice Burroughs and recreate the original era of Tarzan of the Apes.”

During World War II, John Clayton, Lord Greystoke has just completed flight training with the Royal Air Force when his superiors assign him to a secret mission: Locate the enigmatic British Military Intelligence operative codenamed Ilex, whose plane has gone down in a vast primeval wilderness that only Tarzan of the Apes dares brave. Flying Officer Clayton does not suspect that his superiors harbor an ulterior motive for assigning him this dangerous mission. Before it’s all over, the Lord of the Jungle will plunge into his wild past and confront dangers both familiar and unfamiliar in the prehistoric lost land where carnivorous triceratops and saber-tooth tigers roam.

The Retro Report: TIME TUNNEL's Pseudo-Science, A Potentially WONDER-ful Family Tree, THE SIX BILLION DOLLAR Vertical Challenge & More!

Furious 7 filmmaker James Wan is set to helm Warner Bros.' Aquaman big-screener starring Jason Momoa (way late of Baywatch) as the sea-worthy DC Comics icon.

Just too bad the dark-haired Momoa looks more like Marvel’s super Sub-Mariner than the originally-blond based Aquaman.  And there’s most-likely zilch chance of Sub-Mariner of ever making it to the big-screen because of rights issues.

While Gal Gadot is completely miscast as Wonder Woman in Warner’s Batman v Superman (and in the planned subsequent WW stand-alone feature), Lynda Carter should play Wonder Woman’s mother in the Justice League film franchise, and Cloris Leachman (who was cast as Wonder Woman’s mom in the original Carter’s classic TV-movie pilot) should play Wonder Woman’s grandmother.

Boston Cinegeeks! We've Got Passes For THE OVERNIGHT!

Alex, Emily, and their son, RJ, have recently moved to Los Angeles’ Eastside from Seattle. Feeling lost in a new city, they are desperate to find their first new friends. After a chance meeting with Kurt at the neighborhood park, they gladly agree to join family pizza night at the home. But as it gets later and the kids go to bed, the family “playdate” becomes increasingly more revealing and bizarre as the couples begin to open up.

Writer/director Patrick Brice’s second feature is a painfully funny take on thirty something sexual frustration and parenthood. Featuring memorable lead performances by Taylor Schilling, Adam Scott, Jason Schwartzman, and Judith Godrèche, each actor nimbly balances the script’s sudden emotional turns from surprising honesty to complete embarrassment. Produced by Gettin' Rad and the Duplass Brothers, THE OVERNIGHT tells a complex story of universal inadequacies.

For your chance to attend the advanced screening of THE OVERNIGHT on Thursday, June 18 at 7pm at the AMC Boston Common, please RSVP at THEOVERNIGHTrsvpBoston.com

Domo Arigato, Capsela Robotic Workshop

For many children growing up in the 1980s and '90s, robots were the coolest thing ever.

Well, kids loved robots since our parents and grandparents were kids, but they merely had an idea about robots and no practical way to create one in their garage...

But I digress.

Technology in the late '80s and '90s became more affordable by leaps and bounds, which made a robot you could build in your room actually feasible.

I mean, Hell; you had a Nintendo that could take you to new worlds as a fat plumber chasing after a princess, why not be able to build a little robot that moves from point A to B?

Enter Capsela; a company that would make kits that kids (but most often frustrated dads) would use to create very simplistic little moving toys.

I say simplistic because that damn things hardly worked and, more often than not, didn't include all of the parts.

Infographic: THE GOONIES - NEVER SAY DIE!

In the 30 years since its release, The Goonies has been widely recognized as a cult classic.

While firmly rooted in the 1980s—Cyndi Lauper and the Bangles on the soundtrack is proof enough of that—the story is truly timeless. After all, a movie about oddball kids outsmarting dimwitted criminals and saving their neighborhood from demolition could easily be released this year!

And who doesn’t dream about crawling through old tunnels, disarming Rube Goldberg-like traps, and finding pirate treasure? (That CAN'T just be us.) The most wonderful thing about The Goonies, though, is its cast. Over the past 30 years, many of its then young and unknown actors have found great success throughout the entertainment industry. If you find yourself asking “where else do I know them from?”, read on!
