Written by Jorge Gutierrez, Doug Langdale
Directed by Jorge Gutierrez
Starring Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum,

I love animated movies. Traditional hand-animated, digital, stop motion; American or Anime, it doesn't matter. I am definitely in the club that believes that animation isn't just for kids, and some of the best story-telling today can be found in this cinematic medium.

The Book of Life was a delightful surprise.

I was expecting a cheap knock-off of Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. What I got was a beautiful, colorful tale about love, family, and friendship. Mexican-born, director and writer Jorge R. Gutierrez crafts funny and touching story pulling from Mexican folklore, Greek mythology, and Hollywood comedy.

The Book of Life is the story of three childhood friends; the kind-hearted Manolo, the dashing Joaquin, and the headstrong Maria. Each struggling to live up to their families' expectations. In addition, the two young boys compete for Maria's affections.

Their plight has not gone unnoticed. La Muerte, the ruler of the Land of the Remembered and Xibalba, ruler of the Land of the Forgotten have taken an interest in the children's drama. The Gods have made a wager on which boy will succeed in winning Maria's heart.

Each chooses one of the boys to be their champion. Maria is sent away to school, and many years pass before the three amigos are reunited and the Gods see which of their Champions will win.

ST. VINCENT (review)

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by Fred Roos, Jenno Topping,
Peter Chernin, Theodore Melfi
Written and Directed by Theodore Melfi
Starring Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy,
Chris O'Dowd, Scott Adsit, Naomi Watts,
Oliver Bronstein, Terrence Howard

While St. Vincent might be exactly what you think it’s going to be, the movie is still great.

I laughed the whole time and didn’t mind the simple and predictable plotline.

The story of a cantankerous old man forming an unlikely friendship has been done many times, and the antihero always turns out to be someone’s saint, as it were. Think of Up, think of As Good as it Gets, and Murray's previous performance in Rushmore.

Regardless of the details, and in many cases, the offensive insults, these movies are entertaining and heartwarming at the core.

There really isn’t much to say about St. Vincent’s plot. We have Vincent, a drunken, grumpy war veteran, and young Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher), the new next-door neighbor who’s in need of a babysitter.

A hilarious and inappropriate friendship begins. It’s all a bit cliché but as I said before, heartwarming nonetheless.

ANIMATION GEEK: Aqua Profonda by Nathan Campbell

The length of an animated short depends upon the story, obviously, but when you start getting into the two minutes or less territory, your tale better be more than a few stylistic images to make an audience not discount your talent.

Thankfully, Nathan Campbell's 95-second animation is not only beautiful but also concise and sharp. And, better yet, it takes you deep into a world of Aquaphobia (a persistent fear of water) that somehow becomes a metaphor for life as well.

Watch it and then watch it again...it's pretty damn good.

Make These Poison Toffee Apples For Halloween

Candy Apples...Toffee Apples, during this time of year one's deeply disturbing yearning for apples covered in a sticky substance grows exponentially. No one knows why this is, or where this desire to bite into a sweet/tart fruit thing (and becoming momentarily fused with it) comes from but, like most weird cultural traits, we go with the flow without asking ourselves why.

And in this possibly death-inducing toffee apple treat, you get to mix deliciousness with a little bit of Disney villain that will delight both young and old alike.

The traditional mixture still applies in this recipe (Granny Smith apples, sugar, water and light corn syrup) but adds only one ingredient that takes these babies up to Maleficent-level...black food coloring. If you would like to make up a batch of these, head over to the Simply Delicious blog for a step-by-step how-to and start creating some evil treats.

Just don't hand them out to trick-r-treaters...for some reason parents don't think "Poison Toffee Apples" are funny.

When pressed for a quote, James responded, "now you can all stop asking me how you carry this thing home in the rain. Just kidding. I love you."

Double Feature Movie Show: SEXUALLY REPRESSED HORROR

It’s that month again.

Everyone’s favorite time for horror.

Some of us watch it year-round, but most sane people only watch it in October.

We all know that horror is all about sex.

The penetration of the weapon into the body. The pot-smokin’, drinkin’, sex-havin’ teenagers in all those slasher flicks.

But usually it’s all about the punishment for having sex.

Rarely is it ever about what happens when you repress your sexuality.

Sometimes, though, that can have its own terrible consequences.

Lumberjanes #7
Writer: Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson

Artist: Brooke Allen
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Price: $3.99

I jumped into Lumberjanes #7 with the hopes of laughing and smiling at the same old antics of our wonderful cast of characters but what I got was much different.

The girls in charge of Lumberjanes took a more serious route for this issue.

In the previous issue we got a glimpse into the fact something bigger going on with Jo and that she had ties to all the monsters and weird things going on around camp. They quickly jumped away from that and got back to the funnies but this time it’s all story. We first see the girls breaking into the camp leader Rosie’s cabin to steal a shiny glowing rock that we saw in an earlier issue.

They try to enact a clever ruse in the style only Lumberjanes or Scooby-Doo could pull off.

After achieving their goal they head off into the woods.

Jo and her “sister” put the shining stone and the golden eye that Jo found in an earlier issue together. In a flash of golden light a deer made of sparkling dust emerges and calls Jo’s sister Artemis and then runs away. The girls ask Jo what’s going on and then through about ten pages of exposition we are informed that all of the crazy things that have been happening is because Jo’s sister is really the daughter of Zeus.

Yes, that Zeus.

He is trying to retire and pass on his control over the universe to one of his children; so, he is making them battle through a bunch of crazy tests. The other child of Zeus is Apollo and he is the one sending the three eyed demon animals after the girls and he was also the one who is controlling the boys camp that ran into a couple of issues back. Just as she finished catching us all up they arrive at the same cave we also have already been to. Something crazy happens in the cave that I don’t want to ruin for anyone but I will say it’s kind of heartbreaking.

This issue is pretty far away from what Lumberjanes is used to providing. The seriousness of this issue is not bad at all but it also left me wanting so much more. The reason I love Lumberjanes is because of the humor and fast paced wit.

This issue focuses too much on providing us with all of the backstory they have been avoiding for the past 6 issues in exchange for the normal pace and awesomeness. I am not saying this issue is bad because it’s certainly not. It’s just not what’s normal and me, like most humans, hate change. The art is still one of the best around and the page layouts are only getting better with each issue.

Seeing as how there is only 1 issue left; I know they have a lot to explain but it felt weird to lose the humor. I just noticed a ton of really good opportunities for jokes that were left out to make this issue more serious. I just hope that the next and final issue of the run returns with the comedy bang I was expecting today.

Score: 3.5 out 5

LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES: Dreams That Money Can Buy (1947)

Dreams That Money Can Buy is a weirdly fun surrealist flick about a man (Jack Bittner) who signs a lease for an apartment he can't really afford and discovers that, when looking directly into his own eyes in a mirror, he can see what is happening in his head. Naturally, he determines he could probably see into other people's heads as well and sets up shop manipulating sad people's dreams for cash money.

The movie is comprised of seven different vignettes, written and directed by some of the world's greatest avant-garde/surrealist artists: Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Fernand Léger and Hans Richter and seems to be the inspiration for Being John Malkovich.

MUSIC VIDEO MONDAY: I Want To Be Your Joey Ramone- Sleater-Kinney

In honor of Sub Pop's October 21st release of the Sleater-Kinney box set, Start Together, containing remastered editions of all seven of their albums, I thought it might be nice to celebrate one of my favorite girl punk bands with a beloved, often played song (from their 1996 album Call the Doctor) I Want to Be Your Joey Ramone.

While the mid-nineties may be some twenty years ago, for me, that murky ether of nostalgia makes it feel as if I were still back in those heady days of the Riot Grrrl movement where you could feel a change a comin' (and then felt it slipping away as the oughts began) and lose yourself to the sounds of a bunch of girls screaming loudly...sadly, I am 40 and the only real yelling that is going on these days is me yelling at the neighbor kids to stay off of my lawn.

Maybe if I listen to Sleater-Kinney more, I might get back my Riot Grrrl cred:

Art By Megan Brain

As a Twin Peaks fan, the announcement that David Lynch and Mark Frost will be bringing the cult show back to television (via Showtime) is akin to finding out that back fat is finally fashionable. And now comes news that co-creator Mark Frost is penning a book, The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks, that will chronicle the last 25 years of the characters' lives in order to bring us up to date for the new show's release in 2016.

There's only one way to celebrate this news:

Life definitely just got better (and yes, I did do this dance upon hearing the news about the new Twin Peaks show and no, I am not ashamed about it).

SANTA CLAUS: PRIVATE EYE Comes To Thrillbent!

If you've ever wondered what the Jolly Old Elf does after he drops off gifts to the good little gentile boys and girls (and by the way Santa, I don't appreciate your bigoted views against us Jews) then you'll probably enjoy Santa Claus: Private Eye, a digital comic which delves deep into the noir-ish life that Santa, the Private Dick, keeps up the other 364 days a year.

From dealing with femme fatales, gangsters and guns to snapping pics of people screwing just so he can make a living, Santa Claus is coming to town...or whatever catch phrase seems more menacing.

Created by Jeremy Bernstein (writer on Leverage and the video games Dead Space 2 and Pretty in Pink (wtf?)) and drawn by artist Michael Dorman (Logan's Run: Aftermath and Tales from the Dark Universe), this weekly serial is available from Thrillbent for a $3.99 monthly subscription (which also gets you access to the entire Thrillbent library).

If you want to take a gander at this interesting view of Mr. Kringle being not so chipper, than read this first chapter for free HERE.

I'm guessing this might crush the childhoods of those of you who Santa did see fit to deliver gifts to, for me, it's nice to see that he has a tough time making ends meet...yeah, I'm bitter, so what?

Fact: the Forces of Geek editors do not like it when you use their corporate American Express Black card on frivolous purchases.

They really don’t like it when you use it on a number of questionable Amazon and eBay items.

Who knew?

Anyway, I had to return the “adult recreation swing,” the life-size Tron motorcycle, four refurbished animatronic performers from an old Showbiz Pizza resturant, three cases of Betty White’s special edition Merlot called “Rose,” a trampoline shaped like Gizmo, a collection of porcelain drunk baby clown figures, a lock of Tom Selleck’s hair, and the prop chainsaw from Evil Dead 2.

Sucker!

However, after a stern “talking to” from one of the very large, incredibly scary assistant editors at FOG!, the editors felt I could keep one purchase – only because it could be the subject of this week’s Flashback.

WWE Superstars #9
Writer: Mick Foley, Shane Riches
Artist: Paris Cullins
Color Laurie E. Smith
Publisher: Super Genius
Price: $3.99

There is a rumor going around that at next year’s WrestleMania, John Cena, age 37, will square off with a 61 year old Hulk Hogan.

The predetermined nature of professional wrestling allows for certain dream matches to occur that otherwise wouldn’t happen in Boxing or Mixed Martial Arts.

However, what if this match and others could happen when both men were in their prime?

Mick Foley and Shane Riches give us a look, through a bizarre prism of what they would look like.

Wrestlers from different eras are being pulled into combat across a myriad of battle fields from the Roman Colosseum to pirate ships of the Seven Seas.

Present-Day Daniel Bryan and Rowdy Roddy Piper from 1986 join forces to discover the evil puppet master behind this constant mayhem.

We are treated to several other matches and some of them deviate from their assigned “programing” which causes things to be even more hectic.

This incarnation of Roddy Piper is from the 80’s and doesn’t know who Bryan is but Bryan knows everything about Piper, which adds a level of intrigue to their partnership. Foley, known for his wrestling exploits, really makes this book stand out from just another wasted wrestling title with more substance than style. He knows the wrestlers so he is able to insert all of their signature catch phrases and dialog and at the right time instead of just incorporating it for the sake of a cheap thrill.

The art in the previous issues left a lot to be desired where some characters were hard to identify Paris Cullins is a much welcomed hand in this series as his illustrations are clean, full of energy and are fun to look at.

Wrestling comic books tend to suck, but this Legends event is different and should more than hold its own while producing pages of body slamming entertainment. Randy Orton vs. Jake “The Snake Roberts, Ultimate Warrior vs. John Cena, Hulk Hogan vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin, what more could you ask for.

Score: 4 out of 5
