GEOFF JOHNS Talks SHAZAM Reboot and Movie Possibilities.

He's been known as Captain Marvel for a while, but now Geoff Johns is working on a reboot for the hero who shouts Shazam.

In an interview with Newsarama, Johns talked about The Curse of Shazam! A new monthly series of 10-page backup stories in Justice League. He talked about why he chose the character saying, "It's such a different flavor. It's less a superhero story and more of a magical adventure about a kid who doesn't have a family. It's just such a different tone, and the pacing's very different."

When asked about the movie Johns said that the new series is not like what he's planned for a film version. "Some of the same character, obviously, because the characters cross over. Tonally, it's probably pretty close."

The film project is definitely not dead though. "There's always a possibility for Shazam. There's always talk about Shazam. And I can't get into the specifics on that, but yeah, there's hope for Shazam."

At the center of Shazam, Johns commented, "Well, the core of the character, obviously, is surrogate family. I mean, it's easy. That's what he's all about. The same with wish fulfillment. And tied into his wish fulfillment, even if he won't admit it, is a surrogate family."

One big change for the series is that Captain Marvel will no longer have that name. Here's what he had to say about the change. "Well, there are a lot of reasons for the change. One is that everybody thinks he's called Shazam already, outside of comics. It's also, for all sorts of reasons, calling him Shazam just made sense for us. And, you know, every comic book he's in right now has Shazam on the cover. So I think just by embracing that and calling him Shazam. That's just what he's going to be called for us from now on."

There's lots more talking over at Newsarama. Check it out if you like reading and news about what's coming up in the DCu.

It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger.

"Wild nights are my glory," the unearthly stranger told them. "I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me sit down for a moment, and then I'll be on my way. Speaking of ways, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract."

A tesseract (in case the reader doesn't know) is a wrinkle in time. To tell more would rob the reader of the enjoyment of Miss L'Engle's unusual book. A Wrinkle in Time, winner of the Newbery Medal in 1963, is the story of the adventures in space and time of Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O'Keefe (athlete, student, and one of the most popular boys in high school). They are in search of Meg's father, a scientist who disappeared while engaged in secret work for the government on the tesseract problem.

A Wrinkle in Time is the winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal and now, is available in a 50th Anniversary Commemorative Edition which features:
  • Frontispiece photo*†
  • Photo scrapbook with approximately 10 photos*†
  • Manuscript pages*†
  • Letter from 1963 Caldecott winner, Ezra Jack Keats*†
  • New introduction by Katherine Paterson, US National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature  †
  • New afterword by Madeleine L’Engle’s granddaughter Charlotte Voiklis including six never-before-seen photos †
  • Murry-O’Keefe family tree with new artwork †
  • Madeleine L’Engle’s Newbery acceptance speech
* Unique to this edition
† never previously published

And to celebrate this milestone, we're giving away a copy of the 50th Anniversary edition of A Wrinkle In Time and a $50 VISA gift card!

To enter, please send an email with the subject header "TESSERACT" to geekcontest @ gmail dot com and answer the following question:

What is the name of the main character in A Wrinkle In Time?

Please include your name and address (U.S. Residents only. You must be 18 years old).

Only one entry per person and a winner will be chosen at random.

Contest ends at 11:59 PM EST on October 16th, 2011.

Just Look Away: UNKNOWN

$

"Ladies and gentlemen, we're beginning our descent into Berlin Tegel, where local time is 8:30 AM, and the temperature is a cool minus four degrees."

Unknown is a thriller from 2011 that’s 55% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes, where 57% of viewers report liking it.

Why Bother?

"Do you know what it feels like to become insane, doctor? It's like a war between
being told who you are and knowing who you are. Which do you think wins?"

If you enjoyed Taken, you probably want to see Liam Neeson kick ass again.

If you watch Mad Men, you might be a fan of January Jones.

Diane Kruger, Aidan Quinn, Frank Langella, and Bruno Ganz (loved him in Wings of Desire) round out the cast.

Perhaps you read the novel, Out of My Head, by Didier Van Cauwelaert and want to see the adaptation.

If you liked House of Wax (2005) or Orphan (2009), Jaume Collet-Serra also directed Unknown.

After the break, I’ll tell you why none of those are good enough reasons to watch this movie.

I watched it
"There is no Martin Harris. He doesn't exist."

Dr. Martin Harris (Liam Neeson) travels to Berlin for a scientific conference. His wife, Elizabeth (January Jones), travels with him. When they arrive at their hotel, Dr. Harris discovers that he’s missing his briefcase. While Elizabeth checks in, he takes a cab back to the airport to get it.

On the way, the cab gets in an accident and he hits his head against the windshield. The driver, Gina (Diane Kruger), heroically rescues him, but then runs off before the police arrive.

Dr. Harris wakes up in a Berlin hospital with no ID, and trouble with his memory. When he returns to the hotel to reassure his wife that he’s alright, Elizabeth says she doesn’t know him. She’s with another Martin (Aidan Quinn).

Dr. Harris must recover his identity and find out why someone is impersonating him.

The Verdict
"I didn't forget everything. I remember how to kill you, asshole."

So, the first reason to look away is how little ass Liam Neeson gets to kick in this movie. Mostly he wanders the streets of Berlin looking lost and bereft. Diane Kruger (who, at 5’7” looks like a child next to the 6’4” Neeson) kicks more ass.

The movie races towards better things, but it keeps making sharp turns into mediocrity instead.

The reunited Berlin is a great setting. Bruno Ganz, as former Stasi agent Ernst Jurgen, comes closest to actually using the setting. He has some great lines about Germany forgetting Communism just as it forgot National Socialism. I would have liked to see more of that resentment, and more secret pasts, lurking under Berlin’s surface.

The movie makes a point of saying that Gina is an illegal immigrant, mostly to cut her and Martin Harris off from government support. That's another wasted opportunity. Is illegal immigration a problem in Germany, or in Berlin specifically? How do people feel about it? What are the sides to the debate? The filmmakers lost a chance to say something about immigration issues all over the world.

East Germany, and East Berlin, were police states under constant and omnipresent surveillance. Some comparison between that and modern life in other places, including the National Security theatrics practiced in the United States, would have been great.

The purpose of the conference is to discuss better ways to feed the world, including bioengineered crops, but the movie says nothing about the morality and ethics, not to mention real hazards, of genetically engineered food. It’s just a McGuffin, and it feels like the creators chose biotech just because it’s a hot topic. It has nothing to do with the film.

Finally (and quickly), the twist at the end is a shock because nothing in the movie builds toward it. It’s a deux ex machina to explain away the two Martins. It has nothing to do with the rest of the film, and leaves a bad taste long after it’s gone.

Want to watch a thriller with an amnesiac hero? Watch the Bourne trilogy, and Just Look Away from Unknown.

NICOLAS WINDING REFN Talks About DRIVE And Its Possible Sequel

Director Nicolas Winding Refn is tired of talking about Drive, but don't think that means he isn't proud of the success. Now he's talking about doing the sequel.

In an interview with shortlist Refn talked about the success of the film, working on his next project with Ryan Gosling and moving on to a sequel. The follow up to the novel is set to come out in the spring.

Refn said "I’m just so sick of talking about Drive.” He made sure to take about the success and say "You’re always happy with the success. But I’ve talked about this movie extensively for more than a year, so that’s it. I don’t know what else I can add."

If a sequel to Drive is adapted, Refn is open to the possibility of directing it saying "Well I think that... hmm. Let me just say that I haven’t made up my mind yet. Stranger things have happened..." When shortlist brought up the fact that he would have to talk more he responded "Yeah, maybe I shouldn't do it.

The funny part about Refn is that although he created one of the most memorable films about driving recently he doesn't even have a license. In fact he's failed the test eight times. "I just didn’t get it, I never passed. There was a sense that I shouldn’t get a driver’s licence. They were right, I shouldn’t.

His next film is called Only God Forgives and he is again working with Ryan Gosling. Working with Gosling is now normal for him, he said "Well yeah, it just feels right. Ryan and I are very similar. On Drive I was living with Carey [Mulligan] because she had no place to stay, and Ryan would always come over and hang out. So it was very communal in that sense."

Drive is out on Blu-ray and DVD on 30 January

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S3E09: Asylum

$

0
Clark knows Lex is only crazy about him, so he decides to try and bust him out of Belle Reve where he encounters the Ghosts of Douchebags Past in the form of Meteor Freaks he put in there.

It’s like Smallville’s Greatest Hits or something…

The Random:
1. Belle Reve is like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest mixed with every horror movie asylum complete with unscrupulous guards, gibbering crazies, and archaic therapies.

2. Claire Foster’s death after deciding to stop mind frying Lex comes as a surprise to exactly no one.

3. It’s a good thing that two massive electrical explosions and surges in a span of five minutes don’t alarm anyone, or the one dead and two escaped patients either…

“Are they treating me well? Look at this getup.
What the hell do you think?!”

The Awesome:
1. Adam makes his first impression on us by basically telling Lana to sack up and stop her incessant whining. I fully approve and endorse this message.

2. There’s a nice little Easter Egg in the form of a newspaper clip that mentions a “Themiscyran Queen,” a nod to Wonder Woman’s mother, Hippolyta.

3. Supervillain teams ups are always a fun part of superhero mythology and half the fun is watching them screw each other over instead of getting the job done.

“Oh, I’m sorry, were you still whining..?”

The WTF?!:
1. Once again, a high school student is able to hack sensitive files to foil the plans of the bad guys. Does no one have a firewall? Or anything secure?

2. What kind of mental institution that houses dangerous individuals lets them just roam freely and access heavy exercise equipment that can easily be used as weapons unsupervised? Oh, right. The one in Smallville.

3. Quick, guess who I am: “I wanted Clark to stay away from me because it’s his fault everyone and everything always tries to kill me. So he did what I wanted and now I’m mad at him for that.” If you guessed anyone other than Lana Lang, put a helmet on and sit in the corner.

“I sure am glad no one in this place minds that I still need
to be naked to split in two ‘cause I LOVE naked time.”

MONTY PYTHON Actors Reunite For Sci-Fi Film

$
0
0

It looks like members of Monty Python's Flying Circus will be coming together once again to make the sci-fi comedy Absolutely Anything.

Variety reports that Terry Jones will be directing a script that would have Michael Palin, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam and Eric Idle voicing the roles of a group of aliens who give a man on Earth the power to to absolutely anything. In addition to the Pythons, Robin Williams is signed on to play a talking dog named Dennis.

The film would be a live action/CGI story and the Pythons would likely only be voicing, though there is no formal news on casting or roles yet. The project is planned to start filming in the U.K this spring.

The script comes from Jones and Gavin Scott who have been working on the script for over two decades. The two will be producing along with Medavoy, a producer who previously worked on The life of Brian.

"It's not a Monty Python picture, but it certainly has that sensibility," Jones told Variety. He was only able to confirm that Gillaim, Cleese, and Palin have agreed to a role. He did not that producers are trying to sign Eric Idle.

"Terry and Gavin have crafted a classic farce -- something I feel I know a little bit about after all the Pink Panther pictures we did with Blake Edwards at United Artists," Medavoy said. "In fact, the movie even has a pompous Frenchman reminiscent of Inspector Clouseau -- but there the similarity ends. Like all projects originated by any of the Monty Python guys, Absolutely Anything delightfully defies a logline."

DVD Lounge: Robin Williams Times Two

This time we're looking at two Robin Williams films making their Blu-ray debuts, Dead Poets Society: Special Edition and Good Morning, Vietnam: 25th Anniversary Edition.

Do they hold up?

Check out my thoughts after the jump.

Dead Poets Society: Special Edition (Blu-ray)
Walt Disney Home Video / Released January 17th, 2012

The Pitch
Academy Award winner Robin Williams (Best Supporting Actor, Good Will Hunting, 1997) delivers one of his most memorable performances in Dead Poets Society – digitally restored and presented for the first time ever in breathtaking Blu-ray™ High Definition.

For generations, Welton Academy students have been groomed to live lives of conformity and tradition – until new professor John Keating inspires them to think for themselves, live life to the fullest and “Carpe Diem.” This unconventional approach awakens the spirits of the students, but draws the wrath of a disapproving faculty when an unexpected tragedy strikes the school. With unforgettable characters and beautiful cinematography, Dead Poets Society will captivate and inspire you time and time again.

The Review
I saw Dead Poets Society when it was released during my senior year of high school, and it's effect on my at the time was profound.  Robin Williams, in perhaps his best and most nuanced performance, is inspiring as John Keats, an English professor who inspired his class to embrace life and literature.  Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard make indelible marks in their complex roles and Kurtwood Smith is powerful as Leonard's character's father.  The remainder of the ensemble which included Gale Hansen, Dylan Kussman, James Waterston, the great Norman Lloyd and the inimitable Allelon Ruggieroare are all fantastic.  Remarkably, despite it's period setting, the film truly is timeless.  Extras include the featurette Dead Poets: A Look Back (Robin Williams did not participate and his absence is felt), featurettes on sound design and cinematography, interviews, raw footage, commentary and trailer.  Both picture and audio quality are solid and their presentation represents the best the film has ever had for a home video release.

Peter Weir's masterpiece, Dead Poets Society is a relevant reminder to the power of a magical teacher, and Williams' performance is both emotionally engaging and inspirational and a worthy addition to your Blu-ray library.  Carpe diem. Seize the day.

Highly recommended.

Good Morning, Vietnam: 25th Anniversary Edition
Walt Disney Home Video / Released January 17th, 2012

The Pitch
For the first time in stunning Blu-ray™ High Definition, Academy Award winner Robin Williams (Best Supporting Actor, Good Will Hunting, 1997) delivers a tour-de-force performance in the 25th Anniversary Edition of the hit comedy Good Morning, Vietnam!

Enjoy the unsurpassed digital sound quality of Blu-ray High Definition as Army deejay Adrian Cronauer (Williams) spins a red-hot soundtrack of ‘60s hits. His sidesplitting comedy and rapid fire wit make him a hero to the troops, but quickly get him in hot water with his by-the-book superiors. Featuring a behind-the-scenes look at Williams’ hilarious radio monologues, Good Morning, Vietnam remains the quintessential Robin Williams comedy.

The Review
Good Morning, Vietnam's success is thanks to director Barry Levinson who seamlessly combines several elements together.  At it's core is a stranger in a strange land, a love story, a workplace comedy, and a war picture.  And then there's Robin.

As DJ Adrian Cronaur, Williams for the first time was able to mix his improvisational comedy with a dramatic role becoming both the antagonist and the Greek chorus.  Williams' Cronaur is manic, intense and at times a distraction establishing a somewhat inconsistent tone overall.  Levinson also surrounds Williams with a strong supporting cast which includes Forest Whitaker, Bruno Kirby, J.T. Walsh, Chintara Sukapatana, and Tung Thanh Tran.

Good Morning, Vietnam was one of several Vietnam themed films that came out around the same time (Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill, Gardens of Stone), but took a completely different point of view; focusing on the military's internal policies and politics as well as giving an alternate point of view that portrayed the citizens of Vietnam as individuals and not a faceless enemy.  Extras include a production diary, vintage raw footage of Williams riffing in character, and trailers.  A commentary would have been nice addition, as would Williams' participation in  bonus material.

Good Morning, Vietnam is a perfect match-up of artist and material and the films surprising depth and excellent performances make this a solid and easy recommendation.
