CW's upcoming (Green) Arrow pilot has cast its lead. He better start working on that stache beard combo.

According to Deadline, Stephen Amell(The Vampire Diaries, Hung, 90210) will be playing the well known comic book character Oliver Queen. The pilot Arrow is a high profile project at the network and will be a more modern retelling of Green Arrow's origin story. Green Arrow has showed up on Smallville and was played by Justin Hartley for a few episodes when it was on the air.

The "vigilante superhero" is like Batman in that he has no powers, but uses his money to get the best technology and training in archery and martial arts in his Star City. David Nutter will be directing the pilot with a script from Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti, and Marc Guggenheim.

Justin Timberlake is taking his acting career pretty seriously. His next role will be alongside Clint Eastwood in a baseball movie.

According to Variety, Timberlate is set to join Eastwood along with Amy Adams in Trouble With The Curve. The film will be the first for Robert Lorenz who is set to direct from a script by Randy Brown. Eastwood and Lorenz will be producing. This marks Eastwood's first time starring but not directing since he did In the Line of Fire in 1993 with Wolfgang Petersen.

Trouble has Eastwood staring as a baseball scout for the New York Yankees. His age and eye problems means he's on the way out, but he takes one more trip to Atlanta with his daughter to look at a prospect.

Timberlake would play Johnny Flanagan, a friend of Eastwood's and a former pitcher who is also a scout for the Yankees. The character could be a potential love interest for Eastwood's daughter played by Adams.

Shia LaBeouf was supposed to star in The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, but had to pull out due to schedule conflicts. No his calender has cleared up and he is back ready to act.

Variety reports that the actor will be coming to the gritty pulp romance as the title character. The project is now in pre-production with Fredrik Bond, known for his commercials, attached to direct from a Black List script by Matt Drake.

The story is about a "normal guy who falls for a woman who has been claimed by a violent crime boss."

Voltage Productions and Bona Fide Productions are producing the project which is scheduled to start production in Eastern Europe in early May. The project once has Zac Efron attached to star when it was at Mandate Pictures, LeBeouf has been signed on since April 2010 but didn't have time to film thanks to the success of the Transformers films.

"After our fantastic experience collaborating with Shia on The Company You Keep, I jumped at the idea of working with him again on Charlie Countryman," said Craig J. Flores, a producer on the project. "The spark in this amazing script, mixed with Shia's pure talent and Fredrik's masterful ability to create an elevated love story we just can't get enough of -- will redefine pulp romance."

LaBeouf can next be seen in The Wettest Country and then Robert Redford's The Company You Keep.

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S3E11: Delete

$
0
0
Clark, Lana, the Kents and pretty much everyone else compete to be the Manchurian Candidate to kill Chloe for her meddling. Who’s behind it? Our good old friends at the Summerholt Neurological Institute.

At least that annoying Ryan kid isn’t around to bring the episode down this time…

The Random:
1. First up in the Kill Chloe Sweepstakes: Clark Kent, scoring style points for wrecking Smallville’s 852nd truck in three seasons. Even Sheriff Adams makes note of his family’s vehicular history.

2. Adam is apparently secretly Batman. Martial arts, computer skills, suaveness with the ladies. And, c’mon, who played Batman? Adam West. Coincidence? I think not.

3. The emails being sent from “Brainwave” are a nice little nod to a classic DC villain that used to plague the Justice Society. This one’s way hotter though.

She sure beats a bald old guy in a green robe ANYday.

The Awesome:
1. And there it is, our first mention of the illustrious Lois Lane and it turns out she’s none other than Chloe’s cousin.

2. The Lana/Chloe girl fight is just plain brutal, though it needed more nudity. And cowbell. Definitely more cowbell.

3. Papa Kent gives Clark a Kryptonite beatdown in the Kents vs. Clark and Chloe tag team title match. But Chloe wins by kicking people in the face and dumping bales of hay on everyone. She’ll be defending at Wrestlemania.

“Sure, Adam finds a bit of porn, and we just ALL assume it’s MINE, right?”

The WTF?!:
1. Lana attacks a fellow classmate with an axe and kicks her ass across two floors and four rooms of the school and gets suspended? Geez, what’s an expulsion take?!

2. A guy treats Lana nicely and how does she respond? By whining and bitching her way through life as usual. Remind me why guys put up with her?

3. They never really do fully explain Molly’s abilities. Is she just smart? Is it all in the computers? Does she have an inherent ability to control minds, too? Eh, since she’s so hot I guess we’re expected to just overlook that.

Two hot girls fighting in a shower…and they’re wearing LAYERS.
Really, Smallville?

Sloths are apparently the new "faux mustache" trend that is sweeping the hipster population and while I don't fault the quiet creatures that sleep all day long (and oh how I envy you sloth, you are my favorite deadly sin)I am a little confused by all the hoopla.

And Kristen, I thank you for your bravery of showing the world how crazy you really are.

DC Announces BEFORE WATCHMEN. Hurm.

$

Rumored for almost two years, DC Entertainment today officially announced Before Watchmen, a thirty five issue series of mini-series that exploits the beloved graphic novel, Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

With a number of top level creators at the helm, this is another example of the changes of DC Entertainment since Paul Levitz retired.  Moore's relations with DC Comics deteriorated during Levitz's reign, ironically over creator's rights and merchandising.  As seen by recent moves by the company, Levitz was extremely protective of the work, not allowing something like this to happen previously.

Co-creator Dave Gibbons is supporting the project, but Moore shared his thoughts to the New York Times:
“I tend to take this latest development as a kind of eager confirmation that they are still apparently dependent on ideas that I had 25 years ago.”

“As far as I know,” he said, “there weren’t that many prequels or sequels to ‘Moby-Dick.’”
After the jump check out the full press release including the creative teams and the covers to the first issues in the various mini-series.

DC ENTERTAINMENT OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCES “BEFORE WATCHMEN”

This summer, DC Entertainment will publish all-new stories expanding on the acclaimed WATCHMEN universe. As highly anticipated as they are controversial, the seven inter-connected prequel mini-series will build on the foundation of the original WATCHMEN, the bestselling graphic novel of all time. BEFORE WATCHMEN will be the collective banner for all seven titles, from DC Comics.

“It’s our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee. “After twenty five years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told. We sought out the best writers and artists in the industry to build on the complex mythology of the original.”

Stepping up to the challenge is a group of the comic book industry’s most iconoclastic writers and artists – including Brian Azzarello (100 BULLETS), Lee Bermejo (JOKER), Amanda Conner (POWER GIRL), Darwyn Cooke (JUSTICE LEAGUE: NEW FRONTIER), John Higgins (WATCHMEN), Adam Hughes (CATWOMAN), J.G. Jones (FINAL CRISIS), Andy Kubert (FLASHPOINT), Joe Kubert (SGT. ROCK), Jae Lee (BATMAN: JEKYLL AND HYDE), J. Michael Straczynski (SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE) and Len Wein (SWAMP THING).

BEFORE WATCHMEN includes:

-      RORSCHACH (4 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo
-      MINUTEMEN (6 issues) – Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke
-      COMEDIAN (6 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J.G. Jones
-      DR. MANHATTAN (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist:  Adam Hughes
-      NITE OWL (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert
-      OZYMANDIAS (6 issues) – Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Jae Lee
-      SILK SPECTRE (4 issues) – Writer: Darwyn Cooke. Artist: Amanda Conner

Each week, a new issue will be released, and will feature a two-page back-up story called CURSE OF THE CRIMSON CORSAIR, written by original series editor Len Wein and with art by original series colorist John Higgins. There will also be a single issue, BEFORE WATCHMEN: EPILOGUE, featuring the work of various writers and artists, and a CRIMSON CORSAIR story by Wein and Higgins.

“The original series of WATCHMEN is the complete story that Alan Moore and I wanted to tell. However, I appreciate DC's reasons for this initiative and the wish of the artists and writers involved to pay tribute to our work. May these new additions have the success they desire,” said Dave Gibbons, WATCHMEN co-creator and original series artist.

“Comic books are perhaps the largest and longest running form of collaborative fiction,” said DiDio and Lee. “Collaborative storytelling is what keeps these fictional universes current and relevant.”

Azzarello on Rorschach: "You're going to get the Rorschach that you know and want. It's a very visceral story we're going to be telling."

Cooke on Minutemen:  “There’s a part of the characters that is heroic or they wouldn’t be together in this way. I know there’s a lot of self-interest involved but there’s got to be a heroic level to each of them. I realized that’s the part of the story I can tell, that side of it.”

Azzarello on Comedian: "“I think the gut reaction is going to be, ‘Why?’  But then when the actual books come out, the answer will be, ‘Oh, that’s why.’ ”

Cooke on Silk Spectre: "What I realized is that as much as I really like Laurie, she’s really only just Dr. Manhattan’s girlfriend and then Nite Owl‘s girlfriend. We never get to see her being self-sufficient and dealing with herself and dealing with her own problems. She’s there for a man. I came up with the idea of looking at the brief period of time when she becomes an adult."

Straczynski on Nite Owl: "I wanted to show how Dan became the second Nite Owl, what circumstances led to him as a kid to reach out to the first Nite Owl with the goal of becoming a hero...the road that led him to that point, and where it took him as he assumed that role."

Wein on Ozymandias:  “Adrian Veidt is a fascinating character to write. It’s not easy realizing you’re the only person who can save the world from nuclear destruction, and you lose a whole lot of your soul along the way.”

Straczynski on Dr. Manhattan: "The chance to examine his transformation, what it meant and what it cost in going from human to something more profound, is what drew me to this character."

Wein on Crimson Corsair"The Curse of the Crimson Corsair was actually my idea when we first started talking about doing these new stories, since, in the world of the Watchmen, DC stopped doing superhero comics early on and started a line of pirate comics instead.  I thought it might be fun to see what one of the other books in the line looked like."

Director of Freaks & Geeks and Bridesmaids, Paul Feig is now talking about creating a new show based partially on his life.

In a recent stop at the WTF podcast with Marc Maron, the director said that he "really wants to tell the real story" of his childhood which he captures in his books Superstud and Kick Me. So we may have a new show soon looking at teenager Paul Feig.

In his chat with Maron he said "there is one TV series I want to do. It's a very personal tale." He then added, "To me it's a coming of age, coming of middle age story about both my dad and myself and going between the two. It's a lot of funny/awkward episodes."

His earlier work Freaks & Geeks was largly influenced by Feig's life, be apparently he has even more stories to tell. His two books are about his childhood as a Christian Scientist and his awkward phase as a young adult.

Lastly he talked a little about his feature career and a project falling through. He commented on the whole thing that, "I got a bunch of things in development. I had one thing that was gonna go and then we had a little trouble with one of the cast dropped out. They kinda fucked it."

Ridley Scott Wants To Make Cormac McCarthy's THE COUNSELOR

Ridley Scott intends to make Cormac McCarthy scripted drama THE COUNSELOR his first project after PROMETHEUS, per Deadline.

THE COUNSELOR is McCarthy's first screenplay, though his novels have spawned fantastic films THE ROAD and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

Scott had several possible projects in the wings to follow PROMETHEUS, including a historic epic about Gertrude Bell and CHILD 44. Now it looks like THE COUNSELOR is next for Scott!

THE COUNSELOR is similar to the world presented in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, with a protagonist who is a respected lawyer who thinks he can get into the drug business without getting in over his head. Obviously, things don't go smoothly, because if things went smoothly, then we wouldn't have a movie.

A collaboration between Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy is a pretty wonderful thing, especially on a day full of Adam Sandler and remake news. So, without further ado...

Huzzah! Thank the movie gods!
