How Over-The-Air TV Could Save The Networks

$

Last week an attempted sale of Hulu was aborted.

The broadcast networks don’t make money from it, but they are not quite ready to give up on it.  They know that streaming is the future of TV, but do not know how to use Hulu to future proof themselves. Instead of looking towards new technologies and platforms, their salvation could be something from their past: over-the-air broadcasting.

All the major networks still broadcast over the air, and it remains a severely underutilized resource. It’s the ultimate service for price conscious cord cutters because it’s completely free. There’s no subscription fee, you don’t need an internet connection, or a Roku. All that’s required to pull in HD broadcasts in 5.1 sound is a $10 pair of rabbit ear antennas.

If I were an executive at one of the networks, I’d be touting the benefits of over-the-air TV vs. cable; I’d go as far as to give away antennas to encourage people to see just how good the picture and sound quality is.

FOG! Chats With 'CANDY CRUSH SAGA' Creator Tommy Palm

Interview conducted by Lauren Berkley
Bejeweled Blitz. Diamond Dash. Even Angry Birds.

None of these games has the power and influence the that the simple, bright, family-friendly Candy Crush Saga has. To prove it, the "sweet" little game from 2012 has overtaken Angry Birds as the most played game on Earth at 600 million game plays PER DAY on mobile devices alone. It has even gained so much traction internationally that Korean pop star Psy featured it in his "Gentleman" music video earlier this year.

Part of the Candy Crush popularity is its "cross-platform" nature, meaning you can play it on any tablet, computer, or smartphone -- or even on Facebook -- and be able to continue right where you left off, regardless of the device or your location in the world.

I spoke with King Games Guru Tommy Palm about the Candy Crush phenomenon and how big games can start with small ideas.

WELCOME TO PIG ISLAND: Where the Locals Grunt and the Water Is Always Fine

$

In the Bahamas there is an uninhabited island known as Pig Island (or Pig Beach) that is home to a sounder of swine who have managed to live a life that I envy more than I can say.

There are many stories as to how the pigs came to reside on the island. Some say that sailors dropped them off in order to return to them in the future to cook and eat them (only they never came back) or that the founding pigs were victims of a shipwreck and managed to swim to land. Others claim the pigs were plants for a tourism campaign that never quite took off.

Regardless of the reason, the pigs have become beloved members of the Bahamas and are often fed by tourists and locals from neighboring islands who then play and swim with the pigs (who are remarkably happy...and who wouldn't be if all you did all day was swim and eat? Fucking bastards).

After the break are some additional pics of frolicking pigs who happen to have better lives than any of us.

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: "Imaginary Enemies" S1E4 (Review)

Paranoia and choices lead off this episode of OITNB and Chapman (Taylor Schilling), whose choice to severe her ties with Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba) once and for all, is feeling the consequences of that decision when she is forced to clean up Crazy's pee (that she so nicely left in Chapman and Miss Claudette's cube) with tons of industrial strength maxi-pads.

Of course, we all know how Miss Claudette (Michelle Hurst) feels when someone messes with her little world (poor Chapman).

But don't worry, it's Miss Claudette's turn at the flashback this time (I just love how the inmates get a little more interesting every episode) and it truly helps answer the question of why she is such a clean freak (and it also gives the viewers a little bit more insight into why she is so stubborn and determined not to connect with people, although you have to wonder if Miss Claudette does have a soft spot for Chapman).

THE BRIDGE: "Calaca" S1E2 (review)

By Matt 'Quori' Armstrong
We start off this week’s episode pretty much where we left off last week.

As you may recall, Charlotte is now a widow after her dying husband confessed on his death bed that he did not love her and wanted a divorce.

She found some unexplained things that when she pressed her ranch-hand Cesar for more information he led her to a house on the ranch she never knew existed and to a door in the basement behind which we find….

Before I say what it was, let’s look at the options.

It’s clearly not a Coldstone Creamery or Starbucks. So wooden pad-locked door in a dingy basement in the middle of nowhere ranch close to the Mexican border leaves us two obvious choices: 1) Hidden torture room for his illicit proclivities or 2) underground Mexican railroad.

…Door opens to a tunnel, so underground railroad it is. I’m not surprised. The new mystery is what was he doing, who was he doing it for, and for how long was he doing it?

STAR WARS: THE ARCADE GAME...You Have Never Felt This Much Excitement In Your Life

Back when video game graphics consisted of nothing more than connected lines and sharp angles, those of us who were lucky enough to own an Atari 2600/5200 would easily wet ourselves over the most mundane of games.

So imagine back in 1983 when Star Wars: The Arcade Game was released for a home console unit and you managed to talk your parents into buying it for you.

Well, let's just say that the level of excitement felt was equal to what the following commercial implies.

Truth in advertising people...it might indeed be a first.

Terry McGuinness isn’t the only one suiting up in Neo-Gotham in the future.

In fact, the Bat-Family is extended to a Batgirl and even the original Metal Men. In the current status quo of the Batman Beyond Unlimited series, the police commissioner is none other than original Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, about the same age (probably a bit younger than, actually) as Batman’s mentor Bruce Wayne.

In the Crown Point section of Neo-Gotham, the water supply has been poisoned by a super-steroid.

Current Batgirl Nissa Gibson and Babs team up to take down the Roake Corporation who is spiking the punch. Lots of good action here in this one, as plain-clothed Babs teams up with the high schooler for some big punches and hand to hand combat teamwork. New Batgirl handles herself well, in cocky Batgirl fashion, almost getting herself into too much that she can handle and figuring it out in the end.

The backup story stars The Metal Men, who have been on ice for decades, after the passing of Doc Will Magnus. Bruce Wayne reassigns them as agents of the Bat-Family, as Bruce, Terry and Nissa take on the Undercloud network. It’s great to see The Metal Men in action, a delightful and anachronistic surprise in this story set in the future.

GIN AND TONIC-FLAVORED POPCORN: Think of It As A Helpful Way to Sit Through Movies Like 'The Lone Ranger'

$

Sometimes you need a little help trying to make it through a movie you just spent $11 per ticket on. Oh sure, you could get up, find a manager and demand your money back but let's face it, you're lazy and don't like confrontation.

So perhaps a better alternative to yelling at people about crappy movies, is that you just stick a couple of bags of Gin and Tonic Popcorn down your pants (or, if you're a girl, your bag) to help curb your disappointment.

Of course, this is just the flavor of Gin and Tonic (made with 5% of both) so you're not exactly going to get drunk or anything, but seeing how you suspended your disbelief at paying an exorbitant amount of cash for a shit-hole of a movie, I think you can pretend that you are getting a bit tipsy.

Besides, it'll make for a better time than actually watching the movie.

As You Were: A Punk Comix Anthology - Issue #1
(2013, Silver Sprocket Bicycle Club)
Review by Jessie Lynn
A lot of punks are not-so-secretly into comics, too.

It makes sense, as both punks and comics nerds are often ostracized by normies and ‘popular’ kids. Most times, the crossover happens because someone who was considered a geek for being into comics finds salvation and a place to belong in punk rock.

For me, it happened the other way around: I never felt particularly welcome in the world of comics, and therefore didn’t delve into them very much.

But after I got into punk, I discovered that a ton of people made their own comics, often about day-to-day type stuff like relationships and jobs and bike rides, and self-published them, zine-style.

I found indie comics, and punk comics, and I was hooked.

As You Were (curated by punk comics artist Mitch Clem) is set to be a reoccurring anthology; each issue will feature a variety of artists and their differing takes on a common theme. Issue #1’s theme?

TOKYO SALONS Are Offering Snail Goo Treatments...'Cause As We All Know, Beauty Is Gross And Filled With Salmonella

$

I'm almost 40 and I'm happy to say that I don't look a day over 42. Through an intense regimen of occasionally washing my face with soap and a liberal amount of Oil of Olay (when I remember) my skin is as tight as the vaginal muscles of a high school girl with low self-esteem.

In a word, I'm "spectacular".

But yes, I too am worried about age ravaging my youthfulness and hope that soon, science will come up with a way to inject stem-cells directly into my body so I will never grow old (I'm kind of like an evil witch that way).

But now comes word that certain Tokyo salons are slathering their customers with African snails who will goo all over their face for $243 per hour and leave them supposedly feeling like a starlet in the center of a circle jerk.

Apparently, a spokesperson for the Snail Goo Beauty treatment issued a statement saying, "...The mucus left behind by the snails slows the aging of skin cells". There is no mention if the spokesperson began laughing after finishing their statement and/or counting their mountains of money that morons who believe this claim have given them.

For the record, while I will happily sacrifice models to Aphrodite and then smear their entrails over my naked body in order to reduce the signs of wrinkles, I don't think I am up for letting nature's anus grease lube up my face.

I do have a line people.

But what I find even more interesting is that in Penn and Teller's show Bullshit, they actually set up a fake doctor in a mall to give fake "Alternative Medicine" (S1E2) treatments to oblivious mall shoppers. And one of those procedures was putting snails on people's faces...and people loved it!...even though it was BULLSHIT!

What we won't do to look younger.

After the break is a news report on the snail facial as well as the Bullshit episode (just fast forward to the 25:11 mark for the snails or, better yet, watch the whole show, you'll learn something).

I wonder if anyone has studied the rejuvenating benefits of continuously face-palming yourself?

It seems as though the last several years have produced some great movies and TV shows based on what happens in the shadows while we are not paying attention.

Several Stephen Moffat-penned Doctor Who episodes immediately come to mind as well as the Toy Story franchise. These are stories that characterize everyday objects or sounds in such a way as to prevent the viewer from ever again taking these occurrences for granted.

This is the ground upon which The Conjuring walks, sometimes shaking and sometimes shaking the audience.

I was walking through Downtown Boston awhile back and I came to an intersection full of abandoned, junk cars.

It was a creepy discovery to make while walking down what is on any other day a road teeming with cars that have never heard of the Massachusetts’ pedestrian right of way rule.

As I turned the corner onto State Street, facing the historic Old State House, I realized that this is a movie set and, upon further inspection, that the movie being filmed was R.I.P.D. and I become excited.

You need to understand that Boston has only recently become a thriving city for movie making on a major scale.

Sure Boston has been home to classic movies like The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Good Will Hunting, Boondock Saints and The Departed, but there is still that nagging feeling that Boston is the lost urban cousin of New York, Chicago or Los Angeles. So when I find a movie set, I get choked up with home town pride and child-like with excitement that I am witnessing a point in time being put to film for history to discover. Then when I find out that a potential sci-fi blockbuster is being filmed in town, I get spastic.

So, personal stories aside,
R.I.P.D. successfully captures Boston’s current cityscape and uses it as the canvas for dizzying CGI that comes off a bit more Wreck-It Ralph than I care for.
