ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: "The Chickening" S1E5 (Review)

by Elizabeth Weitz
Last episode Miss Claudette (Michelle Hurst) laid down a bit of voodoo wisdom on Chapman (Taylor Schilling) by telling her that "Hope is a dangerous thing" which, inside a prison, it very much is...especially when that hope comes in the form of a mythical chicken...yes, I said chicken.

In this case, Chapman rises on a Sunday morning, not expecting a whole lot out of the day, but hoping to enjoy a bit of quiet with a book, a cup of lukewarm tea, and sitting outside in the cool fall air. As she experiences a calmness (the first since her incarceration) she notices a large chicken contentedly pecking at the ground.

This moment provides a bit of clarity for Chapman, that sometimes hopefulness is found inside of yourself.

Of course the moment ends when she recounts her lovely morning to her fellow inmates and is immediately dispatched to Red (Kate Mulgrew) when she mentions The Chicken.

Apparently, The Chicken is Red's very own white whale who appeared to her in a dream dressed in a little hat and smelling like Chicken Kiev. For Red, The Chicken is hope for her belly and a taste of the outside world.

MY TOP 5: BEST STRONG WOMEN MOVIES

0

Today marks the 165th anniversary of the Seneca Falls Convention, held on July 19-20, 1848.  If you've never heard of this convention…well, it's not surprising.  It was the among the first (and the first organized by Western women) gatherings of women (and a few men, including Frederick Douglass) for Women's Rights.

It was organized around a speech given by Lucretia Mott, an outspoken Quaker woman…quite a rarity at the time. She wrote up the influential Declaration Of Sentiments, which became a bigger deal when the Suffrage Movement started a few decades later.

In light of recent events centering around Women's Rights, I thought it would be a good time to talk about some of the best films I've seen with strong female characters.

It's almost the weekend so my posts today are going to be more in-line with what someone who whipped up a batch of Margaritas would want to watch if they had access to the Internet and are virtually unemployed.

So here's a bee giving a high-five to an intoxicated British man.

Yeah, I thought you would appreciate it.

Get Lost in a Good Mystery Series: Karen Vail

When it comes to mysteries and thrillers, there are a lot of them out there.  And when it comes to a series, you want a character you at least like, enjoy reading about, and can look forward to with each book and a new mystery to solve.

Karen Vail is one of those characters.

She’s ones of the foremost FBI profilers who has done her work and time at Quantico, climbing the ranks, and is one of the more successful women working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Author Alan Jacobson put his work in with this character and series, working on it for seven years before publishing the first Karen Vail book.  He made friends with a number of people at Quantico and the FBI, learning and educating himself in just about everything so that when he starts working on one of his Karen Vail books, he has the FBI tools to make the characters real and the story not just plausible, but a great example of what goes on at in the world of the FBI every day.

Let's say you've been living under a rock for the last five seasons of Breaking Bad's existence and you've just now decided to "See what all the fuss is about" before the final season premieres on August 11th.

You could probably marathon the series in time for the premiere but let's face it, if you haven't done so already, you aren't going to at all.

But luckily for your lazy ass, someone has gone to the trouble of creating a nine minute recap of all the major plot points that occurred on the show so you can simply slide into this season like a pro.

Isn't life grand?

Cliff notes version after the break.

FOG! Chats With Writer MATT WAYNE About MILESTONE COMICS' 20th Anniversary and the Late, Great DWAYNE McDUFFIE!

Earlier today, Milestone Comics celebrated their 20th Anniversary with a panel and signing at SDCC.  Noticeably absent, was Milestone co-founder the inimitable Dwayne McDuffie.  We had a chance to talk to Matt Wayne, former Milestone editor and writer as well as longtime friend of Dwayne's about both the company and the man.

How did you meet Dwayne and how did you become friends?

Dwayne and I went to the same high school, but he was two years older and we weren't close then. We became friends at the University of Michigan when my buddy and roommate Ted Barton acted in a couple of Dwayne's student films, and I ended up crewing on them.

It turned out we liked a lot of the same stuff--notably Steve Gerber's run on Howard the Duck, John Byrne's run on Fantastic Four, Mike Nichols and Elaine May (separately and together) and the Firesign Theater.

Dwayne had made a Batman parody/Adam West homage the year before and shown it at our high school--a funny one, which wasn't easy in Super-8, and with lines that still sound well-constructed: "At first I called myself Louisville Sluggerman, then Sluggerman, then finally the name by which I am known today."

This was 1982--I was 17. Dwayne was a skinny 19-year-old in a CEREBUS FOR DICTATOR shirt, but still had a professorial presence. He spoke in prose that was more economical and reasoned than most writers could produce on paper. He sold jokes to comedians by then, and relaxed by reading at least one book every night.

You came into Milestone as both an editor and writer. What was the experience like?
I worked at Milestone from November 17 1992 to January 10, 1997. And I didn't have to look up those dates--both are major events in my life. I was there every day the doors were open.

Even though I'd written for Marvel, Archie and others before I came in as an editor, and I'd partnered with Dwayne to write a comic for the U.K., "The Road to Hell," I didn't write for Milestone until I'd been there a year. When I did finally ask to try out for a fill-in, Dwayne said he was wondering why I hadn't asked before.

I ended up writing Shadow Cabinet and Heroes, and coming to love the characters even more.

Milestone was the launching pad for many talented people. Why do you think ultimately it didn't survive as an imprint? Was it simply ahead of it's time?
We were initially supposed to be a creative lab, a workshop for diversity. When the first books were a hit, DC re-calibrated their expectations. And when the whole industry started to slump, we were still making a profit but DC thought there were bigger profits to be had elsewhere. That's how I saw it.

Milestone's characters live on today in the minds and hearts of their fans as the Comic Con panel this morning will attest. Why do you think that they are so fondly remembered and do you think that we might ever see new Milestone comics, perhaps from a new publisher?

I would love to get to work with those characters again but one of the secrets of entertainment is, it's really hard not to suck. And whatever form Milestone takes in the future, there's no guarantee it would be as great as the stuff we did. I'd buy every issue though!

With co-founders Denys Cowan, Derek Dingle, and Michael Davis attending the panel, there will be a noticeable absence with the empty chair of Dwayne McDuffie. 20 years since Milestone formed, what do you think is it's legacy?
I saw a panel at Comic-Con for independent comics creators. I noticed that five of the six panelists were African American, and it didn't even feel unusual. It was very well attended--they filled a big room with a very diverse audience. Many of the panelists had told me how much Milestone meant to them. I think that's our legacy: Milestone inspired many, many creators--and of course we made some amazing comics.

After the jump check out a two page comic that Matt wrote with art by John Paul Leon as a tribute to Dwayne's passing.

THE WIZARD OF AHHHS: An A Cappella Version of 'The Wizard of Oz' by The Pentatonix

I will admit that I have watched Pitch Perfect around twenty times now (yes, it surprises even me) and while I usually hate musicals, there's something about a cappella that seemingly sparks my happy place and makes my mouth stretch out horizontally (I believe they call this smiling) until I scare children.

And this little ode to The Wizard of Oz makes me just as happy, so I guess I'm kind of an a ca-whore and I have a lot to atone for making fun of people singing when they should be talking.

But first watch The Wizard of Ahhhs and then feel free to crush me via the comment section.

SDCC – DAN HIPP Unleashes TOXI

I first became aware of Dan Hipp through his comic, The Amazing Joy Buzzards, which was a wonderful (albeit too brief) series of adventures of a crime fighting rock 'n roll band.  Most recently, Mr. Hipp has been working as the art director for the Teen Titans GO! animated series.

But thankfully, Mr. Hipp still does his own thing.  And right now, that own thing is Toxi, a custom vinyl and art print brought to life via CS Moore Studio’s Mondo-chi line.

“TOX” is a Comic-Con exclusive limited edition of 199 pieces, and comes with a collector’s designer box and print signed by Mr. Hipp. You can order one at The CS Moore Studio website http://bit.ly/15mZSeR, or pick one up at booth #2800 during San Diego Comic-Con International.

Dan Hipp will be signing today, July 20, from Noon-3pm.

The former bandmates played a medley including the songs "Forever", "Little Sister" "The Hippy Hippy Shake" and "Everywhere You Look." Sharp viewers will recognize Katsopolis' wife, Rebecca Donaldson (Katsopolis), the producer and former co-host of Wake Up, San Francisco.

Hannibal: Season One, the new addictive series on NBC from Gaumont International Television that has audiences everywhere on the edge of their seats, will be available for the first time on Blu-ray Disc, DVD and Digital Download September 24 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. From Bryan Fuller, the co-creator of TV's "Wonderfalls" and "Pushing Daisies," David Slade, the director of Hard Candy and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and based on the novels of Thomas Harris, Hannibal: Season One delves into the complex mind of iconic villain Hannibal Lecter.

Starring a critically acclaimed cast including Emmy® Award nominee Hugh Dancy (Elizabeth I, Showtime's "The Big C"), Academy® Award nominee Laurence Fishburne (What's Love Got to Do with It, Lead Actor, 1993, TV's "CSI," The Matrix) and Palme d'Or winner Mads Mikkelsen (Best Actor, The Hunt; Casino Royale), the "deliciously disturbing" (Chicago Sun Times) series captured TV audiences, premiering to over 4.3 million viewers.

FBI Agent Will Graham (Dancy) hunts the most notorious serial killers. Graham is both gifted and cursed with an extraordinary ability: he can think like his prey, seeing what they see and feeling what they feel. What he doesn't know is that his new partner is the most notorious serial killer of all. While pursuing an especially troubling, cannibalistic murderer, Special Agent Jack Crawford (Fishburne) teams Graham with a highly respected psychiatrist - a man with a taste for the criminally minded: Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mikkelsen). Dr. Lecter tests Graham every step of the way, toying with him and playing a game all his own, while they work to unravel the mystery and catch the killer. Like only Lecter can, he twists Graham's mind, daring him to question everything he knows about others...and himself.

The complete first season contains all 13 episodes, including one episode never before aired on TV, plus audio commentaries on select episodes, deleted scenes, a gag reel, storyboards and multiple featurettes that cut deep into the creation of the series. ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: "WAC Pack" S1E6 (Review)

by Elizabeth Weitz
Remember how when you were in High School you couldn't wait to graduate and get away from all the backstabbing and politics and being told what to do by authority figures?

Well, for the inmates of Litchfield federal Prison, high school is exactly where they are at...in all it's bloody glory.  And in this episode, the high school metaphor begins with a single incident; when a picture of an inmate's vagina (probably one of the most graphic "pussy pics" ever taken) ends up on a website dedicated to Prison Poon and, subsequently, lands on the desk of the Never-Ever-Helpful-Warden-Flunky/Assistant Principal Natalie Figueroa (Alysia Reiner) who is not amused by the fact that someone is turning the prison into their own personal Twat Town, or so she explains to Caputo (Nick Sandow), King of the prison guards.

For Healy (Michael Harney) who is already having a tough morning, his day got just a bit worse because that damn vajayjay.

First, the picture ends up in his mailbox all Photoshopped into a Wanted poster (complete with a moustache) and knowing that it is going to be his job to figure out how this picture was taken (either with or without the inmate's knowledge), means he is going to have to actually put in some work, something he is not in the mood for (which, of course, means that EVERYBODY on the block needs to talk to him...NOW).

And now, every one's favorite guard/teacher is about to lose his cool (all he wanted was a quiet day...geez).

DEXTER: "Scar Tissue" S8E4 (review)

By Caitlyn Thompson
Well this season really isn’t interesting yet.

Too many predictable and trite conversations. And it’s moving really slowly.

This is the last season – give us the best!

Oh wait…John Lithgow isn’t in it… sooo that’s impossible.

Therapy sessions between Deb and Vogel are like every other scene where Vogel. Is present. She’s unhelpful, overbearing, and waaaayy too analytical. Shrink-wrap has a whole new meaning to me.

She just spits out her thoughts and we’re supposed to think they have credence? Apply this textbook phrase to your situation and then you’ll see the light!

Well, luckily, Dexter has finally learned that she isn’t trustworthy. Thanks for joining us Dex.
