Professional Depressive MORRISSEY Apologizes For Postponing Some Concert Dates In A Very Morrissey Fashion

$

Uber depressed Morrissey had to postpone some concert dates on his tour after a bout of food poisoning and, in total Morrissey fashion, the crooner took to his blog, True To You, to apologize to his fans for inconveniencing them.

And when I say he apologized, what I mean to say is that he verbally sank to his knees and bellowed to the heavens and released his soul to the wind where it hugged each and everyone of his fans whose night was ruined by Morrissey's inability to contain the tainted food in his bowels.

Or, in his words:

I can't give words to the sorrow I feel at the loss of perfect Peru. Oh, black cloud. After such a victorious and uplifting welcome of Lima love, the contaminated jinx had its way via a simple restaurant meal of penne pasta and tomato. Three hours later, both I, and security Liam have collapsed with a deadly and delirious bedridden disease. Five days of round-the-clock medical supervision just barely controls the corrosively toxic food poisoning. I know my luck too well. Sorrow replaces joy, and in every dream home a heartache. It could only be me. I have returned to Los Angeles and to the expert supervision of my doctor Jeremy Fine, who assures me that I shall be fine (although not in the gossamer, powdery sense) for our upcoming shows in Argentina and Brazil. I have absolutely no idea where my beloved Chile has gone. In the heat of cancellations and postponements, the humiliation and mortification I feel on a personal level is too mammoth to be measured. If my spirits climb down any lower I could never again find the dignity to stand upright. We all live at the mercy of biological chance, and although I am not one to take refuge in clichés, I repeat my very servile apologies to any and all who back-packed their way to Peru. Alas, the dark shadow made the same journey. Each year of life brings us nearer to our decline, but I will continue to seek a listener until I'm dead in a ditch.

with all the soul of the world

Now that, my friends, is how you say "I'm sorry".

Check out what I checked out this week.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

Daredevil # 28 (Pick of the Week)
Writer: Mark Waid
Art: Javier Rodriguez & Alvaro Lopez
Colors: Javier Rodriguez
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99

Most issues that come after the conclusion of a major storyline tend to serve as filler until the next big arc arrives.

That couldn’t be further from the truth with this issue as Mark Waid produces a story that pulls at the very essence of Daredevil’s past, present, and perhaps, future.

Nate Hackett, a childhood bully of Matt Murdock requests his representation in court.

The very idea of this infuriates Murdock to no end as all of his bad memories come crashing through the floodgates. Hackett’s justification for why he believes Murdock should help him almost turned the law office into a crime scene.

What first looks like an open and shut denial of Murdock’s help turns into a reluctant yes as the wonderful artwork of Rodriguez and Lopez takes us down memory lane.

The hard part to swallow in all of this is Hackett was bullying Murdock the day he lost his sight and chased him into the street, right before the incident that robbed him of his sight occurred. Hackett was the last person Murdock ever saw which must absolutely suck on so many levels.

Hackett reveals he only bullied Matt because he never played with him or the other kids in Hell’s Kitchen. There is a perfectly good reason why, but instead of letting Hackett in on the secret, he goes a different route and feels remorse for thrusting a sense of rejection on his tormentor.

Later on, Waid’s script turns into a pulse pounding thriller as the events in the court room take the reader and the characters completely off guard for a brilliantly executed finale.

In fact, every facet of the story is executed with brilliance that not only highly entertains, but makes you think about the situation as a whole as you take in all of the awesomeness that is the twenty eighth installment of Daredevil.

So here we are; two episodes away from the season finale.

Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick have been carefully laying track since last season’s finale and, if you’ve been paying attention, this is really just a chance for the two creators to tee up for a satisfying payoff.

And if Hammer and Publick keep the story moving as well as they have thus far, I think we’re all in for a great time.

But I digress; this week’s episode, “Bot Seeking Bot,” was a fitting start for next Sunday’s finale.

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: "Tit Punch" S1E2 (Review)

So, the good news is that the pilot episode wasn't the best thing about the series and episode two, titled Tit Punch (which, by the way, is easily the best name ever given to a television show) delivers an even stronger performance out of the characters.

While the main story still revolves around Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) and her desperate attempt to repair the rift she caused when she accidentally insulted fellow inmate/kitchen chef Red's (Kate Mulgrew) cooking in episode one (so she won't starve to death), this episode is mainly dedicated to the mythology of Red; who she was before prison, how she might have ended up in there and, more importantly, why she is so damn unsympathetic to Chapman.

From Light to Dark With a Bullet—Revisiting New X-Men: Academy X

One of the most common complaints I’ve seen about comic books these days as I lurk throughout various websites is the darkness of the content.

Longtime collectors often reflect on the more lighthearted, almost silly, eras of the Golden and Silver Ages, especially when juxtaposed to a much more graphic Modern Age in which heroes routinely cross lines they swore never to cross and gratuitous violence permeates mainstream comics on a regular basis.

While we should be careful not to get the pitchforks and torches out and play Seduction of the Innocent with the doomsayers, we can’t say those critics don’t have at least a bit of a point.

After all, in recent years, some stories have been driven by rape, mass slaughter, heroes executing criminals, and so on, and those aren’t just in the “mature line” books; we’re talking Justice League and books like those.

The sexual assault of Sue Dibny drove years of DC stories, for example.

But it’s not all as bad as they say either, and there are plenty of old school books that are not overly violent.

NOSTALGIA GEEK: Jolt Cola Makes A Comeback in Gum Form...Ahhh, It Feels So Nice To Relive My Middle School Years

$

The day Jolt Cola made its way to McMinnville, Oregon, my fellow students at McMinnville Middle School did a little dance and ran to the nearest grocery store (Hey Roth's IGA) to buy as many 6-packs as one could get on a meager allowance.

The next day, the sights and sounds of hopped-up-on-caffeine young teens filled the school hallway and resulted in a crackdown of epic proportions that ended with a sugar/caffeine crash in the afternoon that would make one think that there was some kind of carbon monoxide leak in the school.

Needless to say, Jolt cola was banned and the black market smuggling operations began in earnest...until Jolt Cola was gone from the shelves of local stores and the student body went back to slightly overdosing on No Doz for a much needed suburban buzz.

But those days of a legal high still bring a smile to my lips and it appears the Nostalgia Gods themselves have been missing the 71.2mg of caffeine per can of yore and have brought it back in a more sneaky version, notably as gum.

(yes, I'm aware that Jolt has an energy drink but I'm talking about the pure form of "All the Sugar, and Twice the Caffeine" here)

Each piece packs a whopping 45mg of the substance that helps you live through the day in its compact little form, and as a card-carrying member of the generation that sucked down the sugar syrup that allowed you to get through Social Studies without trying to paper cut yourself to death, I appreciate the ease in which I can ingest a minty piece of gum while my heart beats through my chest like the engine of a Dodge Charger.

Good Times.

And at $9.95 for a 5-pack, it's really going to make going into work easy.

Of course, if you really aren't up to dealing with all you co-workers and bosses you can always invest in the Exam Cram Caffeine Pack which comes with the Jolt Cola Gum 5-Pack, a travel mug,Caffeinated Soap, Caffeinated Body Wash and Time Release Caffeine Pills...you know, if you just want to go bat-shit insane.

THE SHERLOCK FILES
THE OFFICIAL COMPANION TO THE HIT TELEVISION SERIES

BY GUY ADAMS

Benedict Cumberbatch is the greatest Sherlock Holmes ever.

Yes, we said it, and the 4 million U.S. viewers that tuned into the popular series are inclined to agree. Benedict Cumberbatch has been lauded as the “best-ever Sherlock Holmes” by People magazine and “the coolest Holmes since Peter Cushing” according to Rolling Stone, beating out Robert Downey Junior in the minds of critics and fans alike.

U.S. audiences have to wait until 2014 for the third season of Sherlock on MASTERPIECE on PBS and, more importantly, the answers to the insane cliffhanger of Season 2. Not to worry, however, suffering Sherlockians! Science-fiction and television writer Guy Adams has your fix. While he can’t reveal the secrets of Season 3 (and who wants him to, really?), he does provide a much-needed dose of Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson in THE SHERLOCK FILES (In stores today; $17.99; !t Books).

As the official companion to the hit series, THE SHERLOCK FILES features exclusive content, including interviews with the stars of the show, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, and Rupert Graves; as well as writers and co-creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, and the production team on everything from writing the scripts and bringing the characters to life on screen to set design and production. In addition, each case is revisited and re-examined through Dr. Watson’s blog, Inspector Lestrade’s police reports, newspaper articles about the crimes, Sherlock’s detective notes, and any other surviving clues from the cases.

THE SHERLOCK FILES also explores the rich history of literature’s most famous detective, marking the evolution of Sherlock Holmes over the years and paying homage to the vast array of actors who have brought their take on Holmes to the big and small screen. As the ultimate guide to the PBS hit series THE SHERLOCK FILES is a must-read for Holmes fans this summer.

Sherlock Holmes-fan Guy Adams has written two original Sherlock Holmes novels, The Breath of God and The Army of Dr. Moreau, as well as The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes, a fictional facsimile scrapbook published to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Conan Doyle’s birth (2009). He has also written three best-selling Life on Mars tie-in books, including The Rules of Modern Policing, as well as two Torchwood novels, The Men Who Sold the World and The House That Jack Built.
And we've got an exclusive look at the book after the jump.

HOW ROY SCHEIDER GOT HIS TAN: And It's Weirder Than You Think

Roy Scheider might have been one leathery mutha-f*cker but like all great men, his power came from deep within the changed pigment of his skin and the darker he became, the more wonderful he was as an actor.

And there's a reason for that (or so says a Native American folktale that is Roy Scheider-specific).

So listen to this story my friends, for much can be learned from it...well, not anything useful but perhaps at a trivia-night at a local pub, who knows.

An Open Letter to Moviegoers on the So-So Reception of PACIFIC RIM

Dear Joe Q Public:

Please explain to me how a movie as good as Pacific Rim gets the short-shrift from general movie-going audiences, while shiny but vacuous replicants like Transformers and Independence Day score big and spawn sequels.

Don’t tell me you’re not still starved for a truly big-bang “movie-movie” entertainment.

Not after Man of Steel pissed the proverbial leotard and the Lone Ranger laid a giant stinky egg.

We’re all still dying for this summer’s Jurassic Park or Aliens, a crowd-pleasing spectacular that demands to be experienced in a giant theater with a capacity crowd.

Well, here it is, and you almost let it slip through your fingers.

THE SADDEST BUTTER In the World

$

There comes a time in everyone's life when you have to make the decision whether or not you should stop eating butter for health reasons. If you do, remember, there's a plethora of "fake" butter products on the market that will taste oily and leak from your asshole in a very unbutter-like way that will have you questioning this whole "health" thing (See, "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter").

If you aren't afraid of anal leakage or crippling stomach cramps all in the name of being "healthy", it might behoove you to try and pick a product that does not leave you in violent sobs every time you slather it on your gluten-free bread, like President's Choice brand Memories of Butter (a product name that is just about as pathetic as you can get).

Of course, if you are looking for a depressive evening spent in a state of suicidal thoughts, feel free to pair Memories of Butter with President's Choice Memories of Dad's Grill:

For that extra dash of horrible blackness you've been looking forward to falling into ever since your father passed away.

You know, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the salt content in both of these products were made from the tears of abandoned children.

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: "Lesbian Request Denied" S1E3 (Review)

$

by Elizabeth Weitz
Change doesn't come easily for anyone and in this episode it's all about the subtleties of self-evolution for the characters (which can come in both the physical and emotional variants).

For Chapman (Taylor Schilling) change comes in the form of finally being able to take part in the more mundane aspects of prison life now that she can remove the newbie orange jumpsuit and slide into the khaki ones now that she has been thoroughly vetted into the system (and it doesn't hurt that her commissary money comes in allowing her to buy the most joyous of items, flip flops for the shower).

But, in all honesty, the most interesting aspect of Chapman's emotional evolution is the uncomfortable and unwanted relationship with Suzanne 'Crazy Eyes' Warren (Uzo Aduba) that dominates most of the episode, and how she is able to negotiate it without triggering Crazy Eyes' violent tendencies (which Chapman is a witness to when there is a three-way stand-off between Chapman, Crazy Eyes and the evil Ex Alex (Laura Prepon) with a piece of pie).

That Time of The Week: New DVD & Blu-Ray Releases The Week of 7/14

Lots of treats this week, including a fantastic Stallone film, the Evil Dead remake, bio-pic 42, plus a non-stop barrage of television titles.

Beat the heat and stay in the air conditioning, fire up that queue and prep that shopping cart and check out the latest releases!

Evil Dead

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment / Released 7/16/13
A secluded cabin. An ancient curse. An unrelenting evil. The original producers reunite to present a genuinely terrifying re-imagining of their original horror masterpiece. Five young friends have found the mysterious and fiercely powerful Book of the Dead. Unable to resist its temptation, they release a violent demon on a bloodthirsty quest to possess them all. Who will be left to fight for their survival and defeat this unearthly force of murderous carnage? Extras include featurettes and commentary.

Last Word: It's pretty hard not to go into first time director Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead without a bit of trepedition.  Among cinegeeks, Evil Dead is a beloved property, which launched the careers of original director Sam Raimi, producer Robert Tapert and star Bruce Campbell.  Now, the trio, who continue to work in mainstream Hollywood both in their own projects and also the occasional reunion, have reunited behind the scenes as producers for the inevitable remake.

But, somewhere along the line, the trio found a unique way to reimagine their "Cabin in the Woods" cult classic; honoring the original while developing a whole new set of characters.

Gone is Campbell's beloved Ash Williams and Raimi's over the top style (though Raimi's old 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 is seen rotting next to the cabin).

Returning is the iconic cabin and the cause of all the trouble, the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, a fleshbound tome that serves as a gateway to hell.  A prologue adds a bit to the mythology before introducing the new characters, childhood friends who reunite at the cabin to assist their friend Mia (a fantastic Jane Levy) to kick her heroin habit.  Joining them is her estranged brother, David (Fernandez).  It takes no time for someone to read the incantation and unleash the evil in the woods before everything goes to hell, literally.

Whereas Raimi played his original film for horror (and the sequel/remake Evil Dead II for laughs), Evil Dead 2013 is perhaps the most intense viewing experience I've ever had.  The palpable tension from the audience in the theatre was invigorating and the Alvarez garnishes the thrills with practical splatter effects to satisfy any gore geek.

Alvarez smartly sets the film in the present and the mere existence of the Oldsmobile infers that this does, in fact, take place thirty years later in that very cabin.  Story beats, which echo the original enough for some to cry remake, can easily be attributed to the Necronomicon itself.  The cast is solid throughout and Jane Levy's possessed is reminiscent of Linda Blair's performance in The Exorcist.  One solid critique is the film isn't scary.  It's intense and often uncomfortable, but there isn't much there in actually frightening you.  But it is fun.  Highly recommended.
