GOATS Yelling Like Humans: The Supercut [Video]

It's Friday and frankly I've already checked out mentally, so yeah, this is a compilation of goats (who have obviously seen terrible things) yelling and screaming like human beings.

My thought on this whole human-sounding screaming goat thing is that some of these poor animals are actual human beings that were at the wrong place at the wrong time and some really mean witch doctor inserted them into the bodies of said animal (kinda like in the movie Skeleton Key).

Or, maybe, they just sound like that, I don't know.

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S10E17: Kent

The Evil Clark (Tom Welling) from the mirror world comes calling, leading the real deal to have an encounter he never thought he’d experience—the alternate Papa Kent (John Schneider), and just like ours, that good old boy don’t take no sass, no, siree.

Cue misunderstandings in 3...2...1...

The Random:
1. Awwww.  Clex gets a shout out.  That’s better than actually having him around at all, right?

2. Tess (Cassidy Freeman)’s realization that our Clark has gone bye-bye is priceless.  It’s halfway between confusion and crapping-the-pants terror.  It makes sense though because you have to tip your hat to how creepy Tom Welling plays his other self.

3. My, oh my, Tess is looking rather…3D in that dress.  She looks lovely in purple and boob.

Yep.  That’s the look, Tess.

My old record player finally turned its last turn over a decade ago and yes, I sobbed like a three year-old being told she can't have a cookie.

But then something miraculous happened, turn tables came back on the market for a reasonable price and, once again, I could slap on my precious soundtrack to Times Square and sing along with Trini Alvarado and Robin Johnson to Your Daughter Is One like God intended.

But you know, there was still something missing in my life, a hole that hadn't been filled since the early 90s when my boombox went bust...a way to listen to my mounds of mix and cassette tapes that wouldn't end with them being eaten to death by old, un-warrantied machines.

Get Lost in a Good Children's Series: THE BARTIMAEUS TRILOGY

$

Jonathan Stroud is your stereotypical British children’s author, polite and well mannered with a great imagination.  In 2003 he published the first book in a planned young adult fantasy trilogy, known as the Bartimaeus Trilogy.  In 2004 he released The Golem’s Eye, and in 2005 Ptolemy’s Gate.

While it has never reached anywhere near the bestselling status of say the Harry Potter books, it nevertheless sold very well in Europe and the United States, and yet there are still many fans of the genre who have never heard of this trilogy.

What’s interesting about the Bartimaeus Trilogy is that while it is a similar world to that of Harry Potter, set in Britain with magicians and magic, it takes on a subject matter and questions the status quo and dynamic of this world in ways that J. K. Rowling never did.

In the world of the Bartimaeus trilogy, magicians don’t actually have that much power.

They have all their control and magic from summoning djinn from another world and using them to do magical things, and all the summoning of imps, djinn, and higher level afrits is done through reading incantations from books.

So in this world, the magicians really don’t have that much power. Yet, the magicians control the entire government from Parliament to the prime minister.

I'm not even going to pretend to understand what is happening in this video (although, it does feel like part of a Punk Goes Pop compilation album) but I will admit to going into a semi-trance on my second viewing of it and achieving a higher state of peace than I was used to.

Which lead me to the conclusion that we are all one and through a shared consciousness we can achieve true understanding and a more Star Trekian-like existence.

But, I'm pretty sure that wasn't it's true goal.

Marvel Comics Silver Age DisContinuity Appendix 001: Hulk Prototypes

$

One of the greatest guides to the concept of continuity in a specific series is The DisContinuity Guide: The Unofficial Doctor Who Companion by Paul Cornell, Martin Day and Keith Topping, first put out in 1995.

From my point of view the genius of this work is in the way the authors peel back the layers of a complex text like Doctor Who, and start back at the beginning, when we didn't know anything about the series or what it would eventually evolve into.

This allows us to see the ways in which the universe was expanded, sometimes carefully, often times not. We get to see undeveloped themes and the earliest examples of new themes.

Like an evolutionary biologist studying our small, brown furred burrowing human ancestors, we get a look at the way things were without the baggage of the way things are.

Doing a consecutive history of Marvel Comics presents many challenges, especially when trying to ascertain what source material might have influenced the creative decisions of those who made the comics. Last week we looked at the first issue of the Hulk, a character based primarily on the popularity of the Thing from the Fantastic Four, but also on Frankenstein's monster and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Ultimately, the Hulk can be seen as a continuation of the monster comics that sustained Marvel/Atlas Comics for many years preceding the superhero boom started with the publication of the first issue of the Fantastic Four. But the publishers of the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide saw a more direct influence of the monster books on the new Marvel characters. They saw in the various monster stories what they called "prototypes," early attempts at using the same ideas that would ultimately evolve in the more popular characters we know now.

In this installment I will be looking at stories featuring  candidates for the Hulk. We'll do them in chronological order.

MY FAVORITE 80'S YEAR: 1983

Cartoons of 1983

I've been doing a lot of thinking in the last few days (probably because I'm old enough now that I pee a little whenever I sneeze) about my younger days back when I had no idea what a mortgage payment or high cholesterol meant. You know, back when life was all about Saturday morning cartoons, bike rides to the park to smoke stolen cigarettes and saving up your allowance money so that you can go see a matinee movie at the tri-cinema followed by a Dilly bar at Dairy Queen.

Easy living stuff.

And upon this contemplation (followed by violent sobbing) I came to the conclusion that 1983 was THE MOST AWESOME YEAR for me and everything after that slowly got subtly worse (getting depressed yet?). Not that I hated the 90's or anything, I mean the drugs were better and I could get into after-hours dance clubs legally, but no, 1983 was the shit.

And here's why:

WARNING: I'm going to tell you everything that happened in the episode. If you don't want to know then stop reading. OR ELSE!  And I'm going to use everyday Archer speak which means I assume you've seen the show. If you haven't seen the show stop reading spoilers on the current episode and go buy the first season on DVD. Or Blu-Ray. Or download it on iTunes. Netflix. You get the point.

"Vicious Coupling" sees Archer pretty lonely on a Friday night. He's out looking for a drinking partner and is going to each and every member of the ISIS team looking for that partner. Pam and Cheryl actually have dates. Malory is going out drinking with her husband Ron Cadillac. Lana and Cyril are actually starting to date again and are going out for the night.

MY TOP 5: Movies Involving Necrophilia

Valentine's Day is a fraud. There. I said it.

Ok, it's not a very controversial position. Really, only sorority girls and Hallmark employees like Valentine's Day. But it is "The Day of Romance" and all, so I decided that I would celebrate that romance.

Here are the five best movies that involve necrophilia.

RE-ANIMATOR (1984)
Directed by Stuart Gordon
Written by Stuart Gordon/William J Norris/Dennis Paoli
Based on a short story by HP Lovecraft

From disgustingly horrific to disgustingly hilarious, Stuart Gordon's rather loose interpretation of Lovecraft's Herbert West - Re-Animator is the prime example of that venerable sub-genre, splatter. (Other highly recommended examples are Evil Dead 2 and Street Trash.)

Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs, the poor-man's Bruce Campbell) is a rather strange, but brilliant med-student at Miskatonic University. He moves in with fellow med-student Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott), who just wants to go to school and have sex with his girlfriend (Barbara Crampton). Unfortunately, West is trying to bring people back to life using his bright, neon green reagent.

Things, of course, go horribly awry. Bodies pile up as body parts flail around on their own. And then there's Dr. Carl Hill (David Gale), the villain and lead reanimated corpse. He also wants to have sex with Dan's girlfriend…and he does.

That scene alone would make this movie worth seeing. Luckily, it's filled with tons of nearly as memorable scenes and two of the greatest characters in 80s horror: West and Hill. For this movie alone, Gordon and Combs will always be heroes to me.

Symbolism and Biology of KING GHIDORAH

$

Of all of Godzilla’s rogues gallery of foes, the very top of the list is crowned with King Ghidorah.  He has battled Godzilla more times than any of his other foes and unlike many Toho Kaiju, can be described as pure evil.

King Ghidorah, or simply Ghidrah, was the first monster created to specifically be a foe for other monsters rather than starting off as a monster to menace humanity.

And it wasn’t just one monster Ghidorah was meant to fight, but three.

Probably why the monster was granted three heads to even things out.

Otherwise, Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster sort of plays like a 60s version of Marvel’s The Avengers, with a group of disparate, clashing personalities brought together to face a massive threat.

And Ghidorah really is a massive threat.

ZERO HOUR: "Strike" S1E1 (review)

By Rich Redman
History Is Destiny
Beneath a church in Germany, in 1938, we see a Rosicrucian cross. Supervised by a priest, some men are building clocks. A prophecy about the end times is mentioned in conjunction with the Nazis making “a breakthrough.”

Two priests argue about prophecy, and one says that the dead have risen. The priests go to a hospital and visit a child “born of no womb.”

The baby’s eyes are very pale with tiny pupils. Guards discover their presence and they escape.

In a conference under the cathedral, the priests confer with some Rosicrucians, who have something hidden under the cathedral. They are moving something they have hidden for a long time. A German officer appears, carrying a Rosicrucian cross. From the shadows, he warns the men that a Nazi convoy is right behind him. The Nazis arrive and shoot everyone. One of the priests says, as he lies dying, that not even God can help anymore. “Only the Twelve can.”

Jump ahead to Brooklyn in the present. We meet Hank Galliston (Anthony Edwards) and Laila Galliston (Jacinda Barrett). She is hunting for treasure at a flea market. She focuses on watches and clocks. He has to leave to publish Modern Skeptic magazine. She finds one of the clocks the Rosicrucians were making in 1938, buys it, and takes it back to her shop.

Back at the magazine, we meet Arron Martin (Scott Michael Foster) and Rachel Lewis (Addison Timlin). Hank, Arron, and Rachel spar over content for the magazine. Laila calls, panicking, because someone has broken into the shop. Hank has Arron call the police and rushes to Laila’s aid.

He finds the shop wrecked, and Laila gone.

The Pull List: STAR WARS #2, BATMAN #17, UNCANNY X-MEN #1 & More!

Check out what I checked out this week.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

Star Wars #2 (Pick of the Week)
Writer: Brian Wood
Artist: Carlos D’Anda
Colorist: Gabe Eltaeb
Cover: Alex Ross
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $2.99

It is a great time to be a Star Wars fan. J.J. Abrams is directing Episode VII, Han Solo and Boba Fett will reportedly get their own film, and Brian Wood knocked it out of the park with last month’s debut issue that captures the true essence of this franchise and has gone back to press for a 3rd printing.

Deception clouds the Rebel Alliance as a spy is rumored to be lurking about. Princess Leia has been charged to assemble a stealth team in order to flush out the mole so they can find finally find a new hidden base.

The ambitious plot direction, along with the solid art direction, garners your complete attention.

The explosive action of a Rogue Squadron dog fight with the Imperial fleet puts you right in the cockpit courtesy of Carlos D’Anda and the banter between Han and Chewie will make you smile one minute and be concerned the next, as the phrase “Uh-oh” signals that Slave 1 is in their midst.

Wood is all aces when conveying emotion and watching Leia pine over a holonet travel brochure of Alderaan just tugs at your heart strings. Seeing her grieve over the loss of her home world is something we've never seen before. Sure, she yelled at Tarkin before he ordered the Death Star to fire, but the mourning period was never shown in the movies. With this story arc taking place two months removed from the battle of Yavin, this may be the first time Leia has had a chance to let it all sink in.

Colonel Bircher, a new character and celebrated pilot, has been given command of Darth Vader’s personal Star Destroyer. Let me repeat that so it will sink in. He has been given command of Darth Vader’s personal Star Destroyer. There can’t be a more un-enviable task in the galaxy, but no one but Bircher actually relishes the opportunity.

This is vital to the development of the plot because Vader is the only main character with nothing to do since he is on the outs with Palpatine and it will makes things all the more intriguing when Bircher screws up and is force choked into oblivion.

The first issue scored a perfect ten and this second offering scored a nine. That is not a knock in the slightest as I had an absolute blast reading this book and in the end, that’s what comic books are supposed to be about. Fun!

Uncanny X-Men #1
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Chris Bachalo, Tim Townsend & Jamie Mendoza
Colors: Chris Bachalo, Tim Townsend
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

Marvel’s golden boy, Brian Michael Bendis, does it again with the re-launch of the flagship X-title.

Cyclops is on a mission to make sure that the revolution will not only be televised, but prosperous for all mutant kind. Things get off to an auspicious start as an unknown figure confronts S.H.I.E.L.D. with an offer they can’t refuse as it relates to Scott Summers.

Bendis kept an incredible pace as sub-plot after sub-plot kept popping up. Cyclops has been fused with some of Xavier’s and Magneto’s character traits while it is his own radical idealism that drives the boat.

The imagery was some of the best of the week and truly enhanced the excellence that is this issue.

Based on real events the dramatic thriller "Argo" chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis focusing on the little-known role that the CIA and Hollywood played-information that was not declassified until many years after the event. On November 4 1979 as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point militants storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran taking 52 Americans hostage. But in the midst of the chaos six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed the Canadian and American governments ask the CIA to intervene. The CIA turns to their top "exfiltration" specialist Tony Mendez to come up with a plan to get the six Americans safely out of the country. A plan so incredible it could only happen in the movies

Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season

Based on the best-selling book series by George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones is an epic drama set in the grounded fantasy continent of Westeros, where ambitious men and women of both honor and ill-repute live in a land where summers and winters can last years. Season 2 plays out against the backdrop of a fast-approaching winter – the season of the white raven. In King’s Landing, the coveted Iron Throne is occupied by cruel young Joffrey, counseled by his conniving mother Cersei and uncle Tyrion, who has been appointed Hand of the King. But the Lannister hold on the Throne is under assault on many fronts. There’s Robb Stark, son of the slain Lord of Winterfell, Ned Stark, who seeks autonomy in the North and has taken Cersei’s brother Jaime prisoner in battle; Daenerys Targaryen, who looks to shore up her depleted power in the east through three newborn dragons; Stannis Baratheon, eldest brother of the late King Robert, who rejects Joffrey’s legitimacy and aligns with a powerful priestess to raise a naval attack; and Stannis’ brother Renly, who has maintained his own claim since fleeing King’s Landing. In the meantime, a new leader is rising among the wildlings North of the Wall, adding new perils for Jon Snow and the order of the Night’s Watch. With tensions and treaties, animosity and alliances, Season 2 of Game of Thrones is a thrilling journey through a riveting, unforgettable fictional landscape.

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome

An all-new chapter in the Battlestar Galactica saga, Blood & Chrome takes place in the midst of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, the sentient robotic Cylons, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a young, talented fighter pilot, William Adama (Luke Pasqualino, The Borgias), finds himself assigned to one of the most powerful battlestars in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica. Though Adama quickly finds himself at odds with his co-pilot, the battle-weary officer Coker (Ben Cotton, Alcatraz), the two men must set their differences aside when a routine escort mission with an enigmatic passenger (Lili Borden, Silent Witness) turns dangerous and becomes a pivotal one for the desperate fleet.

NAKED MEN COMICS #1-4 (review)

By Tea Krulos
Totally Naked Man, one of the beguiling superheroes of Rose City, is a man born from a long line of superhero satire titles like Flaming Carrot and The Tick.

Dressed in the most minimalist of all costumes (and by that I mean not a stitch) billionaire playboy Alzheimer Fresco dons...well nothing...at night to battle a befuddling mix of second rate supervillains. He has help from allies like Extremely Conservative Woman and the Horseless Horse, who leads a questionable existence.

There are lots of parody targets along the way—Batman, Galactus, Clint Eastwood,  and a whole cast of 1980s cartoons--  He-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Smurfs and Care Bears.

But there is something that makes this different than your average run of the mill superhero goof—writer/artist Illya King is using the old adage “write what you know.” No, King is not a nudist, but a former member of the “Real Life Super Hero” movement.

I learned quite a bit about these folks while researching my upcoming book Heroes in the Night.
