Well here we are, gang. Thanks for sticking with me on my own personal pull-list, in a week wherein we learnt that Disney are doing non-chapter theatrical "Star Wars" spin-offs.   As I've mentioned, I'm doing a movie with Gary Kurtz (producer of the original "Star Wars" Episodes Four & Five), so this has come up in conversation more than a little bit in the past several days.

"Star Wars" was a massive influence on me; as a kid, it made me want to make movies.

Hell, I crashed the set of "Return Of The Jedi" as a teen, later appearing in costume in Ken Burns' "Empire Of Dreams" DVD documentary!

So, I have very mixed feelings about the new Mouse House "Star Wars 2.0". Not having the Fox logo at the beginning of the movie is going to be bad enough..but, more on this and many other issues some other time.

On with the show!

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING Romantic To Do This Thursday? How About A Couple's Coffee Enema?

The love shared between two people is a beautiful thing, as is a piping hot cup of coffee first thing in the morning.

However, if that couple decides to squirt said coffee into their respective anuses before work every morning, then friends, your love is fucked up and perhaps you should think about couple's counselling.

I'm just saying.

Then again, it's coming up on Valentine's Day so, if you're looking for something different to do this year, why not shoot liquefied bean juice deep inside your partners lower half, it's certainly better than going to Chili's. (Which is where I get taken to every year).

When it comes to romance, I'm not ashamed to tell you most of what I've learned is from the movies (which probably explains a few things about by my love life.)   But with St. Valentines only hours away, love is in the air, and I canít help but think back to the movies that taught me about the meaning of love and romance. And because I grew up in the 80's that list has one thing in common: lots and lots of John Hughes movies.

So in honour of the season, I've decided to share some of the lessons that Mr. Hughes taught me about the affairs of the heart.

For better and for worse...

Tonight is an evening dedicated to love so why not light a few Vardelur candles created by the Icelandic band Sigur Rós which, according to their website, smells like "...THE SMOKY, SLIGHTLY BRINY SMELL OF A FLOTSAM CAMPFIRE ON A DISTANT BLACK BEACH UNDER A WAN MIDNIGHT SUN. AND, MOST RECENTLY, THE SMELL OF SIGUR ROS'S STUDIO, WHILE THEY GO ABOUT THE QUASI-MYSTICAL BUSINESS OF MAKING THE MAGIC HAPPEN. THE AMERICANS: "Gregory" S1E3 (review)

By Morayo Sayles
This week, Phillip (Matthew Rhys) receives a signal in the paper from their partner Rob (Chase Coleman), the agent who died in Episode One.

Surprised and understandably cautious, Phillip asks Elizabeth (Keri Russell) to enlist the help of Gregory (Derek Luke), a black American she enlisted into the KGB during the tumultuous revolution of the sixties.

After some pretty impressive and well choreographed surveillance by his team of agents, Gregory was able to determine that the signal came from Robert’s wife, Joyce Mckenzie née Ramirez (Audrey Esparza).

It turns out that Robert had a wife and son Oscar, that he kept secret from not only the motherland but also his teammates.

This came as quite a shock to our favorite Directorate S team, especially Phillip who thought he knew everything about Robert.  It also alarms him because he does not know what Joyce knows about them (KGB).  It goes without saying of course that Phillip and Elizabeth speak to her to find out what she knows.

Slight wrinkle, Gregory also determined that now the FBI is also tailing Joyce.

SCIENCE FICTION NERDS REJOICE! San Diego State University's Library Receives $2.25 Million Dollar Sci-Fi Collection

L. Ron Hubburd, Robert Heinlein, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Golden Age Sci Fi

Edward Marsh is merely one of us sci-fi nerds (and, if you spend good money on tattered copies of Issac Asimov books, you'll feel a special kinship with him too) only, Marsh has amassed a thoroughly impressive collection of Science Fiction that is worth millions of dollars and happens to be entrenched in Sci-Fi's "Golden Age".

But that's not what makes him particularly awesome. Marsh has decided to part with around $2.25 million dollars worth of his collection, which includes signed first editions and various ephemera like press clippings, autographs and notes.

The massive pile of fantabulousness will be housed in the Edward Marsh Golden Age of Science Fiction Room which, if he plays his cards right, will be make-out central for anyone who wants to rub the covers of such authors as: Edgar Rice Burroughs, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Frank HerbertL., Sprague de Camp, Kevin Anderson, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells (not to mention a few by Ernest Hemingway, Albert Einstein, George Orwell, Will Durant, Winston Churchill, Ian Fleming, William Burroughs and several U.S. presidents).

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S10E16: Scion

Clark (Tom Welling) and company learn the real deal about the Lex clone that Tess (Cassidy Freeman) has been harboring—he’s not just a clone of Lex; half of his DNA came from Clark.  How many seasons did I spend claiming the two of them had more than a “friendship?”

Your apologies are now being accepted.

The Random:
1. Anyone else think Lex and Clark’s secret lovechild, Clex (Lucas Grabeel), would have been less dorky?  I know I sure did.  Yeah, yeah, I know they call him Conner, like in the comics where he’s a clone of the same origins, but I’m going with Clex anyway.

2. You know what runs in the family, apparently?  Fiery eyejaculation, that’s what.  Clex got that one from his father…uh, the Kryptonian one.

3. One of Clark’s first lessons—after saying, “Hey, don’t set my wife to be on fire with your perverted eye beams,” that is—should have been, “Don’t wear any red jewelry.  It’s never good.”

Clex, that’s your kind of mom you’re eyeing like that.  I think.
When did the Kents move to West Virginia?

Black Hipstery, A Little Bit

Oh, if I could be a black hipster.

I laugh at Portlandia, so maybe I'm close?

I'm already a black nerd, and there's a fair amount of overlap in the nerd/hipster Venn diagram. (Such as using Venn diagrams.)

Sometimes it feels as I teeter on the edge. But I think that, at the end of the day, I'm likely too square to be a hipster.

Speaking of black hipsters...

It's as if I'm some kind of Hipster Two-Face, flipping a coin to decide how much cred I want to muster. New Wave music? '80s culture-kitsch? Thick glasses? Corduroy jackets and poplin shirts? Cult TV shows? Vintage clothes and pin-up retro chic? Repurposed and upcycled clothing and furniture? Oddball rock and roll? Liberal-to-progressive politics?

Yeah, I like these things.

ARROW: "The Odyssey" S1E14

By PJ Hruschak
This episode begins where it left off last week, with Oliver Queen's (Stephen Amell) archer ego, The Hood, bursting into Moira Queen's (Susanna Thompson) office. While we expected there to be a lot of dramatic dialog stemming from this setup, we instead get an immediate about face, and are sent on a long visit to Flashback Island.

Put Down the Gun, Ma, You'll Hurt Someone
Oliver, with arrow pointed at mommy Moira's face, asks her about "The Undertaking" and Walter. She honestly doesn't know about the second part of that and manages to avoid the first with some ace groveling. Although Hoodie got some face time with mom, she uses her kids' picture to try and distract Hood, which she does well enough that she's able to grab a gun and get in a few pot shots, one of which actually hits Oliver.

Oliver ends up in Felicity's (Emily Bett Rickards) car, in costume, bleeding and asking for help getting to his secret hideout. The best part is when Felicity bursts into Oliver's hideout, sidekick Diggs (David Ramsey) draws a gun on her and she asks for help "because he's heavy." Seems Felicity and Diggs make good doctors. Diggs calls out Felicity not being too surprised about Oliver being the Hood. Seems felicity is being brought into the fold since she's already been helping them solve cases. Ollie flatlines at one point when things go bad in the Flashback sequence - a typical TV tactic - but then they play it off as Felicity knocking out a plug. Pretty sneaky, sis.

History of Science Fiction Cinema: The Magic of Méliès and the Birth of a Genre

A little over a year ago, while I was leaving a screening of Martin Scorsese's Hugo, a fantasy film highlighted by, among other things, the works of cinema pioneer Georges Méliès, I overheard a little boy talking to his dad about the film they had just seen.

This boy, probably around nine or ten, was so excited for his father to show him more films by this French magician turned filmmaker.  It felt good to see, in this day and age of cheap and easy entertainment, a child wanting to see more work by a filmmaker that made his last film close to a hundred years ago.

Maybe there is still hope after all.

A VERY SPECIAL Valentine's Day Musical Tribute to Love, Romance and Those With A Debilitating Lord of the Rings Fetish

Love

Well, it's early evening here on the East Coast and I am getting ready to spend a romantic evening with my husband where we will seductively eat left-over Chinese take-out and watch a Bones marathon on Netflix before falling asleep on the couch (God, we are so very much in love).

But for those of you who do not share the kind of epic romantic tale that my hubby and I have attained through almost a decade of mutual respect and a superior shared laziness, then might I recommend watching the following music video by one Chris Danes Owen (who looks like a cross between Ann Coulter and more manly Legolas) whose vocal talent will guide you toward a more fulfilling sense of LOVE (and Hobbit cosplay).

Now a warning: There are some seriously powerful stuff hidden inside this gem of a video that should not be taken lightly, only those in a solid relationship should watch this video (drunk, if possible) in order to get the full effect. I fear that if you happen to view this while single it could lead to the most retched of side effects, pure gladness that you don't have to put up with such bullshit.

Happy Valentine's Day.

Triple Shot: THE CURSE OF DRACULA, STAR WARS #2 & MUDMAN #6

Every Thursday, Clay N. Ferno reviews three comic book/graphic novel picks that you might want to take a look at.

THE CURSE OF DRACULA: Deluxe Hardcover
Dark Horse Comics
Publication Date:
February 13, 2013
Format: FC, 96 pages; HC, 7" x 10"
Price: $14.99
ISBN-10: 1-61655-064-3
ISBN-13: 978-1-61655-064-6

This week sees the deluxe hardcover release of a 1998 Dracula story from vampire comic masters Marv Wolfman and the late Gene Colan; the classic Marvel Tomb of Dracula creative team from the 1970s.

This edition includes a new forward by Wolfman as well as sketches and reproduced pages of Colan’s pencil work, sans touchup or Dave Stewart’s colors.

Set in the late 90s, Dracula is back from the dead and a Van Helsing (Jonathan) carries on his familial tradition of seeking to stake the vampire and stop his bloodlust. It is well after dusk as the scene opens on the hills of San Francisco where we are introduced to the Van Helsing gang armed to the teeth hunting down vampires on a feeding frenzy.

Though not officially to be considered a sequel or associated at all with the Marvel Comics' Tomb of Dracula series, it is hard to not make the connection here. With Dracula being in the public domain, and so many vampire stories spanning multiple generations dating back to the Middle Ages and sometimes back even further, the Wolfman and Colan Dracula of this book is very familiar. The immortal vampire starring in this role is more Dee Dee Ramone than the Jack Palance complete with black leather motorcycle jacket and Beatle’s haircut.

The protagonist Van Helsing has been hunting vampires since at least 1989, when his vocal chords were severed from one of the blood thirsty beasts. He is accompanied by driver Simon, a half-human/half/vampire Hiroshima (parallel to Marvel’s popular Blade character), and an ex-KGB agent Nikita Kazan. The support hunters do little to carry the story as a whole, but the crew does provide some great dialogue moments for the story and allow for greater schemes in the third act. Sebastian Seward, another descendant of Stoker’s John Seward is saved by the team.

Dracula seduces an influential Senator’s wife, while the gang investigates a coven disguised as a nightclub downtown. The carnage and horror of victims half alive from being drained are on display in the vampire den.

To reveal more would spoil this fine story, but ask yourself, what motivation does an age-old vampire have to get involved with Senator Charles Waterson’s wife? Also, how can you raid a blood-pantry for the local bat guys and gals without quite spilling some of the stuff everywhere?

There’s plenty of classic horror and scary moonlight scenes as Dracula and his henchmen transform between man and beast, and sometimes appear as a peculiar and disturbing combination of the two, Man-Bats capable of carrying a man five stories high to intimidate him.

The hunters become hunted themselves as the battle rages on in the third chapter of the book (originally a three-issue limited series). The same vampires vying for their master’s attention are willing to sacrifice all for him. Sadly for them, these cold undead children of the night are no match for the well trained Van Helsing and Seward troop. Armed with automatic wooden stake assault rifles (we’ve always wanted to say that), bullwhips and grenades our team has the upper hand.

These soldiers in the fight against the night fight bravely, but can Jonathan and Sebastian honor their legacy? Can they drive a stake in to the heart of the world’s most powerful vampire?

There’s just so much to drool over in this volume. Gene Colan’s amazing draftsmanship at nearly seventy years old. No inking was necessary for the pages, the pencil art was so finely rendered and has such visceral texture that inking these pages was unnecessary. Oh, if only so many Jack Kirby pages were treated with the same reverence! But I digress. Gene Colan defined the look of Dracula for many people and his work with Marv Wolfman (preceded by Gerry Conway and Archie Goodwin) at first challenged the convention of the Comics Code in the 1970s, and introduced two black characters into the Marvel Universe. Wolfman and Colan created Blade just four years after Stan Lee and Gene gave us Falcon.

This book would make fine television, and I credit this to the storytelling on the page and in the script. Wolfman knows inherently where to place the beats of a great story and has crafted many iconic storylines from the The Crisis on Infinite Earths and the origin of Robin III, Tim Drake.

This affordable hardcover is full of action and highly recommended for fans of Gene Colan’s art as well as anyone who appreciates a modern but pre-Buffy take on vampires.

Otaku Lounge: Top Japanese Albums of 2012

$

Readers of Otaku Lounge may remember an article I wrote some months ago about Western-friendly Japanese pop and rock music.  I still have about as much love for the likes of AKB48 and Arashi as I did then, but 2012 nonetheless saw some excellent J-pop and J-rock albums released, and this week I’ll be going over a few of what I consider to be the best of them.

For the sake of originality and fairness, I’ll be counting full studio albums only and excluding any best of and compilation albums.

Of course, I was unable to listen to every single album that was released over the 2012 period, so I’d like to encourage readers to suggest their own personal recommendations.

Chemistry – Trinity
Release date: January 25th

This may be the final album from Chemistry we see in a while, since the duo have announced they’ll be going solo for a bit in order to pursue their own projects. Thankfully, Trinity is another solid album that manages to do exactly what they’ve done in the past: put together a number of tracks that blend pop and R&B into something smooth and cool without sounding pretentious or over-produced. In total there are 15 songs making up the album, with 5 solo tracks from each vocalist and 5 from the pair as a unit. Nearly all of them are good, making it difficult for me to cherry-pick favourites – although at the moment, ‘Trinity’, ‘Lucid Dream’, and ‘Kanashimi Shower’ strike me as being particularly outstanding.
