Snakes Alive: Okusawa Shrine

One morning about two months ago, at around 10:00 am, we had a surprise: a bunch of guys in happi jackets and white pants that looked like they were nicked from cricketers paraded past our apartment here in Okusawa, chanting and huffing and puffing like a troupe of big, bad wolves.

Over their shoulders they lugged a long, twisted up thing that resembled a skinny, beige dragon with a cute mush, and my wife Yoko calmly advised that it was the beginning of today's festival for Okusawa Shrine.

Side Effects

Produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Gregory Jacobs, Scott Z. Burns
Written by Scott Z. Burns
Directed by Steven Soderbergh
Starring Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Channing Tatum

Open Road Films / Rated R

I really enjoyed Steven Soderbergh’s latest thriller,Side Effects, a murder mystery placed in the unusual setting of the pharmaceutical industry. The story is initially about a young woman welcoming her husband home from prison (for insider trading) while coping with severe depression. I’d really like to express all of how I feel about the film and the brilliant characters it features, but I can’t without giving everything away. I understand now why the trailer was incredibly vague.

It’s easy to be misled in thinking that this movie is similar to Soderbergh’s 2011 thriller, Contagion, where the role of the virus is replaced by a pharmaceutical drug, but Side Effects is a character study about manipulation. It’s not about an outside source that affects people (like a virus or drugs) but the actual side effects and impacts people have on each other.

By Ellen Waddell
Last night the fourth season of Community, loved by critics and geeks but not the general populous, arrived under an umbrella of controversy, leaked emails and without its original show runner Dan Harmon.

Community is, for the lack of a better term, a cult show.

We can call it that because despite consistently low ratings and public spats between cast and crew it inspires hard-core dedication from fans (#sixseasonsandamovie, etc) which leads to it getting renewed.

Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Jim Rash, Ken Jeong, Chevy Chase

If you missed the soap opera that has been the Community set over the last three seasons, then let me catch you up to speed;

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S10E14: Masquerade

The VRA has gone away, so it’s time to get back to the nitty gritty of that whole Darkseid subplot as Clark (Tom Welling) goes global in his saves and Chloe and Ollie investigate some of Desaad (Steve Byers)’s shenanigans.

The final push to the series finale is starting to kick it up a notch.  Bam!

The Random:
1. Does Lois (Erica Durance) realize that her “disguise” for Clark is pretty much a knockoff version of ex-boyfriend Oliver Queen (Justin Hartley)?  Uh, projecting a bit much, Lo’?

2. Chloe (Allison Mack) and Ollie’s relationship hijinx adds a lot of levity to the episode, as Ollie wants to put a label on things and Chloe remains aloof and noncommittal.  Luckily, they get to shelve the awkward conversation by kicking the crap out of their kidnappers…who just happen to be FBI.  Whoops.

3. Chloe has now been kidnapped twice in this episode alone.  What’s the overall tally now?  Because I’m pretty sure if she gets one more, the next one will be free.

Chloe (Allison Mack)
“Ummm, Ollie.  Does FBI still mean what it used to?
Because, if so, we just screwed the pooch.”

There's a plethora of upsetting videos out on the series of tubes we call the internet, but I have to admit that this particular ode to "masking" is certainly one of the weirder ones I have seen.

And really, did they have to set the video to The Stranger? I mean, it's a great Billy Joel song and now it will be forever linked to a particular brand of sexuality that I will never be able to separate from it.

Whatever.

Just watch and cringe.

This month Forces of Geek’s Man from Hong Kong, Big Mike Leeder takes a look at the life and times of one of Hong Kong Cinema’s unsung heroes.  His name is Rambo K. K. Kong and while his name might not be instantly recognizable, if you've watched a lot of classic Kung Fu Cinema and especially if you've seen Rob Cohen’s Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, you'll probably know his face and his moves!

A former student of the great “Sam Seed” AKA Simon Yuen, father of legendary fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, Kong has been involved with martial arts and movie making on various levels for the majority of his life. His film credits might not be as numerous as some martial arts actors, but they include many a Kung Fu classic as well as a major international hit. He’s also been a personal trainer and sports therapist to various action performers including Japanese action actress Michiko Nichiwaki, Taiwanese action actress Cynthia Khan, Wushu maestro Jeff Falcon and a certain Jean-Claude Van Damme with whom he worked onBloodsportand Kickboxer. Marvel Comics, Fantastic Four, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Discontinuity

One of the greatest guides to the concept of continuity in a specific series is The DisContinuity Guide: The Unofficial Doctor Who Companion by Paul Cornell, Martin Day and Keith Topping, first put out in 1995.

From my point of view the genius of this work is in the way the authors peel back the layers of a complex text like Doctor Who, and start back at the beginning, when we didn't know anything about the series or what it would eventually evolve into.

This allows us to see the ways in which the universe was expanded, sometimes carefully, often times not. We get to see undeveloped themes and the earliest examples of new themes.

Like an evolutionary biologist studying our small, brown furred burrowing human ancestors, we get a look at the way things were without the baggage of the way things are.

Okay, so, if you're like me, a slice of cold pizza in the morning is like a little taste of Heaven on your tongue, but let's face it, when you get to be a certain age (say late 30's), eating like you were a college kid feels a bit gauche.

But there's no need to give up that wonderful taste of sauce-topped delight just because you're old and have to appear responsible so that the social workers won't take away your offspring, not when you can easily whip up a batch of Pizza Pancakes!

BATMAN ON ROBIN Gallery Show Explores The Dynamic Duo's Alternate Side

Tonight at Mission: Comics and Art in San Francisco, the opening reception for Batman On Robin will take place at 7:00 pm with readings by the artists.  This exhibit, curated by cartoonist and No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics editor Justin Hall features the contributions of a wide variety of artists in a number of styles to the time-honored tradition of finding homoerotic subtext in the relationships between Batman and the various Robins he's fond of collecting.

I've known Justin for almost thirty years and he shared some information about the show with me after finishing setting it up.

Did the show meet your expectations?

I'm very pleased with how it all came out. It's a weird show, but kind of brilliant, if I do say so myself.

What was the genesis for this project?

Here's how it came about:
Rick Worley (who does the comic A Waste of Time) and I realized that we had both done comics about Batman and Robin cosplay sex, so we thought, hey there's probably enough material out there of Batman and Robin "slash" art to make a gallery show! Mission Comics and Art here in San Francisco took it on, and "Batman ON Robin" was born. We asked a few of our friends, and the response was overwhelming... Apparently, a lot of folks have something to say about the dynamic duo's relationship.

What kind of submissions did you receive?

I'm really proud that we got such a wide diversity of art for the show, in terms of media (traditional comics pages, tattoo art, etchings, digital prints, paintings, kite art, etc.), in terms of artistic backgrounds (mainstream comics artists, indie comics artists, fine artists, animators, etc.), and diversity of the creators (men and women, gay, straight, and bisexual).

What did you contribute?

I did a series of Batman Kama Sutra ink paintings for the show. The best part was naming them! Bat Sutra Position 1: Entering the Bat Cave or Bat Sutra Position 2: Lining the Robin's Nest. I traveled in India last year, so it was fun to combine a sacred Indian art style with superheroes!

After the jump check out some art from the show.

WARNING: I'm going to tell you everything that happened in the episode. If you don't want to know then stop reading. OR ELSE!  And I'm going to use everyday Archer speak which means I assume you've seen the show. If you haven't seen the show stop reading spoilers on the current episode and go buy the first season on DVD. Or Blu-Ray. Or download it on iTunes. Netflix. You get the point.

Midnight Ron starts with Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) stuck in Montreal after his passport is confiscated. Archer calls every single person to try and get some money to get the hell out of Canada but every person there pretty much laughs in his face. On to flip side Malory (Jessica Walter)'s husband Ron Cadillac (Ron Liebman), much to Malory's chagrin, is in Schenectady at one of his dealerships. Malory is pissed because she has box seats to a show and her husband is, well, in Schenectady.

Cohen Film Collection: The Rohauer Library is a world-renowned collection of rare movie classics. Long acclaimed for its immensity and entertainment value, this esteemed collection of over 700 titles spans 75 years of the cinema’s most dynamic eras. This unique screen treasure was amassed by Raymond Rohauer (1924–1987), the former film curator of the Huntington Hartford Gallery of Modern Art in New York, who devoted his life to collecting these distinguished films.

Rohauer was born in Buffalo, New York, and moved to Los Angeles when he was a teenager because of his passion for the movies. Starting his collection as a youth, he went on to found the Society of Cinema Arts, offering events and regular screenings of experimental, classic and foreign films at the Coronet Theatre and the Riviera-Capri Theatre. These venues played an important role in educating film students and filmmakers in Los Angeles about early cinema history. Later, Rohauer established partnerships with Buster Keaton, Mrs. Harry Langdon, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and others for the distribution and restoration of features and shorts.

Cohen Film Collection: The Rohauer Library is the successor in rights (in most cases, all rights throughout the world) to the listed motion pictures of Buster Keaton, D. W. Griffith, the films of Marcel Hellman, Herbert Wilcox, Pendennis Films, Ltd., the Paramount short film libraryand others. These exclusive licenses and contracts bring to the Collection original nitrates, camera negatives, prints and other materials unavailable elsewhere, to assure the best prints possible.

IS SOUTH KOREA Getting Ready To Take Over the World of Pop Culture? This Les Miz Parody Certainly Feels Like It

$

So here's some speculative bullshit that I feel like sharing. I think South Korea is getting ready to out Pop Culture Japan, England and the US in the next couple of years.

Think about it, they managed to sneak in PSY's Gangnam Style through the backdoor completely integrating it into everyone's subconscious until the entire planet is doing some kind of embarrassing horsey dance at whatever family get-together is being videotaped. And now the South Korean Air Force's OFFICIAL BLOG TEAM has created a parody of Les Miz called Les Militaribles which is supposedly about the ..."celebration of sorts of airmen’s shared sacrifice during two years of service"[NYT] but really seems to be a hilarious musical bitch-slap to the soul-crushing job of shoveling snow (and I have a feeling that most of the Northeast can relate to that particular feeling).

The video, which has only been out for six days, already has over 3 million views (probably because Les Miz star Russell Crowe tweeted the video link) and is required viewing for anyone who wants to stay on top of emerging video trends from South Korea (and you know you want to).

I'm telling you, this country is gonna get it's own Con soon.

THE WALKING DEAD: "The Suicide King" S3E9 (review)

By Rich Handley
As The Walking Dead's third season returns from its hiatus, Governor Philip Blake (David Morrissey) forces Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker) to prove his loyalty by facing his brother Daryl (Norman Reedus) in an arena death-match. Merle beats Daryl fiercely, whispering for him to follow Merle's lead so they can both get out alive.

Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) crash the party, killing several villagers.

In the confusion, the four make their escape, rendezvousing with the injured Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) back at the car. Rick and Glenn refuse to let Merle live at the prison, deeming him dangerous and untrustworthy, but Daryl chooses to leave his friends behind rather than again abandoning his brother.

Andrew Lincoln,Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, David Morrissey, zombies, Robert Kirkman, Glen Mazzara, AMC

Back at the prison, Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson) gets to know Tyreese (Chad Coleman)'s group, warning them not to get comfortable since Rick may not let them stay. As the newcomers bury Donna (killed during the previous episode), her husband, Allen (Daniel Thomas), suggests they steal guns and take over the prison. Tyreese and his sister Sasha (Sonequa Martin) disagree, preferring to cooperate with who they believe to be good people.

Andrew Lincoln,Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, David Morrissey, zombies, Robert Kirkman, Glen Mazzara, AMC

Rick's group finds a truck with a Walker inside. Overcome by the stress of recent events, Glenn snaps, stomping the zombie's head to gory pulp, and then yelling at Rick for failing to kill the Governor after what he did to Maggie. They then return to the prison, where Rick gives Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) the news about Daryl's departure.

Several citizens storm Woodbury's gate, determined to leave since they no longer feel safe, but the guards refuse to let them pass. Walkers break through a barricade, biting a citizen. Andrea (Laurie Holden) kills the zombies, but the man is badly suffering, and she considers for a moment what to do. To the townspeople's shock, the Governor walks out of his office, coldly shoots the man in the head and heads back inside. Andrea confronts him, but he no longer cares about maintaining Woodbury's false paradise, saying, "Those people have had it easy. Barbecues and picnics—that ends now." With Blake clearly unstable, Andrea reassures the masses that they'll persevere and rebuild.

Andrew Lincoln,Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, David Morrissey, zombies, Robert Kirkman, Glen Mazzara, AMC

Hershel asks Maggie and Glenn what happened to them at Woodbury, but neither will discuss her sexual humiliation at the Governor's hands. Rick asks how soon Michonne will be able to leave the prison, and Hershel says it'll be a few days, as she may have a concussion. Rick meets Tyreese, but refuses to shake his hand or let his group stay. Hershel urges Rick to change his mind, but the sheriff sees Lori's ghostly image, pulls out a gun and begins acting like a lunatic, screaming for Tyreese to leave. Fearful for their safety, Glenn and Hershel rush the newcomers out the door.

A lot happens in this episode, the first to air in more than two months. Among the highlights: the Governor's swift, wordless shooting of a Walker-bitten follower; Hershel telling Glenn he considers him a son; the characterization of Tyreese, who seems poised to become a worthy addition to the show; Axel (Lew Temple), no longer clad in prisoner garb, now serving as a full member of Rick's group; and, most of all, Glenn's confrontation with the increasingly ineffective Rick.

Andrew Lincoln,Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, David Morrissey, zombies, Robert Kirkman, Glen Mazzara, AMC

A common theme permeates, as one character after another loses control, unable to handle the building stress and horror. Rick, in particular, teeters on an emotional precipice, in danger of harming himself or others as Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies)'s loss poisons his psyche. When Daryl chooses to leave with his brother, Rick looks scared and desperate, openly pleading with him not to go.

Andrew Lincoln,Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, David Morrissey, zombies, Robert Kirkman, Glen Mazzara, AMC
As he later holds his new baby, an odd detachment crosses his face and we hear the infant's cries echoing distantly in his head—an indication that he sees Shane (Jon Bernthal)'s face instead of his own, perhaps, or that he may blame the child for Lori's death. When he rejects Tyreese's group, he does so out of fear, unwilling to take responsibility for any more people's lives.

And when it all becomes too much, he hallucinates Lori's silhouetted ghost taunting him from above.

Just as Shane unraveled the season prior, Rick, too, is beginning to grow unhinged, brandishing a gun and screaming at unseen phantoms. It seems inevitable—particularly given the episode's title—that Rick is heading for a complete breakdown, possibly even suicide. Would the writers have the chutzpah to kill off the show's heroic lead? It seems unlikely, since Rick remains the comic's main character to this day—but, then, the TV series has diverged greatly from the comic, and the writers have already killed off fan favorites Shane and Dale. Rick could very well be next.

While I consistently enjoy Andrew Lincoln's performance, Rick's arc this season has led him down a dark, disturbing path, making him a liability. There's a very real possibility, giving how oddly Rick has been acting, that he may be succumbing to the plague, just as Shane did. As much as I wouldn't want to lose the character or the actor, I'd be OK with the writers killing him in the finale, provided it was done with dignity—and by his own hand. While tragic, it seems a fitting end. J. Michael Straczynski, upon killing Marcus Cole on Babylon 5, is reported to have told Jason Carter that he had to kill Marcus not because the actor had not done a poor job, but because he'd done such a fantastic job that Straczynski had to see his character's story through to its natural conclusion, even if that meant losing him. The same may well be true for Lincoln and Rick.

Glenn, too, is showing signs of strain. Compared to his lighthearted introduction in season one as the survivors' optimistic, helpful scout, Glenn has changed dramatically over the past two and a half years. No longer meekly accepting what others tell him to do, no longer paralyzed with fear at the sight of the undead, Glenn now reacts decisively in the face of danger to protect those he loves, and is unafraid of standing up to those with whom he disagrees. But Glenn's transformation has taken its toll. Maggie's near-rape during the season's first half incensed him, and the formerly passive, naïve young pizza-deliverer now aches for revenge.

Andrew Lincoln,Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, David Morrissey, zombies, Robert Kirkman, Glen Mazzara, AMC

Steven Yeun's performance has been riveting—believable, sympathetic and multifaceted. The character was already a favorite among comic fans, but Yeun deserves much of the credit for making the televised Glenn just as popular. It will be fascinating to see where his journey will lead. Whereas Rick's emotional damage seems to be making him a weaker man, Glenn's has made him stronger. If Rick grows unable to function as the group's leader (or even dies), we could see Glenn poised to replace him. I, for one, would welcome such a development.

Then there's the Governor, who in this episode, having lost his eye, his zombified daughter and now the loyalty of those living in his faux paradise, appears ready to break. Like Rick back at the prison, Blake has become so unhinged, so detached, that he's no longer capable of making the rational decisions needed for his people to survive. In supplanting his authority by proving herself better-equipped than he to comfort them, Andrea may have put herself in grave danger.

The parallel between Rick and the Governor is clear, each spiritually damaged by the loss of a wife and the heavy burden of leadership. Despite what the audience knows about the Governor—that he kept his undead daughter hidden in a closet, maintained fish tanks filled with Walker heads for his macabre amusement, murdered others to steal their supplies, subjected people to the horrific zombie arena and repeatedly lied—we somehow still feel sorry for the man.

Andrew Lincoln,Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, David Morrissey, zombies, Robert Kirkman, Glen Mazzara, AMC

It's a testament to actor David Morrissey, a brilliant addition to the series, who has expertly treaded the difficult line between cultish tyrant and sympathetic villain. But that sympathy may soon fade, as Blake has now crossed over into full-on psychosis. The series has never had a more compelling villain, and although it's likely that he'll be dead by the season finale, the build-up to that eventual demise promises to be a thrilling one.

That's not to say the episode didn't have its weaknesses. It did. Merle's betrayal of the Governor in the arena was obvious and predictable. Andrea's sudden emergence as Woodbury's de facto protector was unconvincing. And Beth's scenes with Carol and Baby Grimes dragged the pacing to a crawl, as actor Emily Kinney continues to have precious little to do—with T-Dog(IronE Singleton) no longer on the show, Beth has replaced him as the most under-utilized cast member.

Andrew Lincoln,Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, David Morrissey, zombies, Robert Kirkman, Glen Mazzara, AMC
What's more, the concept of Ghost Lori is more than a little cringe-worthy. I'm admittedly not a fan of the whiney Lori Grimes to begin with, and was relieved to see her killed off; for her to stick around as Rick's personal guilt-induced Obi-Wan Kenobi is not a development I relish.

When a feverish Daryl hallucinated Merle last season while a zombie gnawed on his boot, the scene was intense and creepy; in Lori's case, it just comes off as corny. Hopefully, the writers can make it work, because it's not likely to be a one-time deal.

Still, season three remains the best to date, with "The Suicide King" providing a solid return after a painfully long absence. As we anxiously wait for Daryl to return to the fold, for Rick to either get his act together or blow his own head off, for the Governor and Merle to receive their comeuppance, for Michonne to begin living up to the character's as-yet-unfulfilled hype, and for the rumored, long-anticipated return this season of Lennie James as season one's Morgan Jones, one thing is clear: The Walking Dead is alive and running.

GIRLS: "One Man's Trash" S2E5 (review)

I really thought this episode was delightful. We got to see Ray (Alex Karpovsky) flip out, which is usually entertainingly odd and articulate, and a really random dream-like affair between Hannah (Lena Dunham) and Joshua (guest star Patrick Wilson). No insufferable Marnie (Allison Williams) or Jessa (Jemima Kirke) drama. This episode was subtle and really, really good.

Joshua is a disgruntled neighbor of the coffee shop, Grumpy’s, where Hannah and Ray work. As it turns out, Hannah is the culprit of Joshua’s suspicions against Grumpy’s trash dumping location, and upon her confession she swoons him and they have a two-day romantic faux-life together.
