CONTEST! Win MANDRILL & HAPPY, HAPPY Blu-rays!

$

0

Magnolia Films (and their Magnet line) distributes some of the best films released today.

Just over the last several months they've released on DVD/Blu-ray such impressive titles as 13 Assassins, I Saw The Devil, Hobo With a Shotgun, Rubber, Point Blank, Tucker and Dale Versus Evil and Trollhunter.

Two of their latest offerings are Mandrill and Happy, Happy.

Mandrill is Chilean director Ernesto Díaz Espinoza's spy action thriller starring Marko Zaror, Celine Reymond, and Alejandro Castillo. In 2009, the film won Best Fantastic Feature and Best Fantastic Actor Awards at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas.
Completing contracts with ruthless efficiency, Mandrill (Zaror) is always on the lookout for the man who killed his parents when he was a child. When a contract comes up and it looks like this may finally be the man responsible for the death of his parents, Mandrill discovers that the only way to get to him is through his daughter, Dominique (Reymond). But revenge is often a terrible cycle, and Mandrill may not see this through to the end.
Happy, Happy is Norwegian director Anne Sewitsky's 2010 comedy starring Agnes Kittelsen, Henrik Rafaelsen, and Joachim Rafaelsen. The film is a winner of the World Cinema Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and Norway's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 84th Academy Awards.
Family is the most important thing in the world to Kaja (Kittelsen). She is an eternal optimist in spite of living with a man who would rather go hunting with the boys, and who refuses to have sex with her because she "isn't particularly attractive" anymore. Whatever. That's life.

But when "the perfect couple" moves in next door, Kaja struggles to keep her emotions in check. Not only do these successful, beautiful, exciting people sing in a choir, they have also adopted a child - from Ethiopia! These new neighbors open a new world to Kaja, with consequences for everyone involved. And when Christmas comes around, it becomes evident that nothing will ever be like before - even if Kaja tries her very best.
And we're giving away two sets of these amazing films.

MY TOP 5 South By Southwest Film Festival Breakout Movies

$
0
0
The South By Southwest Film Festival has come a long way since it started out as the red-headed stepchild of the music festival back in 1994. (Nearly 20 years ago!)

From premiering movies that no one ever saw again (Go, Mating Habits Of The Earthbound Human, The Newton Boys) to premiering big budget Hollywood films that don't seem particularly festival friendly (Source Code, 21 Jump Street).

Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you, dear reader.

Either way, the festival has gotten bigger. (And MUCH more doc heavy.)

Every year there are some breakouts that I'm still talking about the next year. I think these might be the ones for 2012.

Stay tuned in two weeks, because I'll have a round up of the best horror films that played at the festival.

BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING

Hands down, the best film of the festival.

Everyone I talked to who saw it agreed with me. If you've never heard of Wayne White, you should look him up. He's the guy who built your childhood…if you grew up with Pee-Wee's Playhouse, that is. He created Chairy and a host of other puppet characters on the show, along with some of the animations on Beakman's World and a few other lower rent kids' shows. What's he up to now? He's a successful artist, selling his weird wares to the people who laughed at him before. (He even has a giant art book. It's called, of course, Maybe Now I'll Get The Respect I So Richly Deserve.)

The documentary is inspiring, but not in a cloying way. I attribute this not only to director Neil Berkeley for always treating Wayne as a human being and not as a story, but to Wayne himself for being that human being. Yes, he's a larger than life character, but he doesn't shy away from his dark side. He had a lot of dark years after Pee-Wee went off the air and he has no problem talking about them. He's hilarious and a little bit crazy (ok, a LOT), but he never comes across as anything but real. Beauty Is Embarrassing really was the one to beat at this year's festival.

BEWARE OF MR. BAKER

Speaking of roller-coasters, Ginger Baker's life has certainly been that.

If you've never heard of him, read up on your rock and roll history. He was the drummer for Cream and Blind Faith, two of the greatest "supergroups" to ever exist. Since then, he's been up and down on drugs and career, but he's survived it all and is now living in South Africa with his fourth wife and her daughter. He's still a rock and roll mix of Hunter S. Thompson and Harlan Ellison.

The film opens with him hitting the filmmaker (Jay Bulgar) in the face with his cane. He doesn't get much nicer than that, yet somehow he manages to be sympathetic. Through his constant assertions that he's a jazz drummer (totally valid, actually, if you listen to any of his stuff after Blind Faith) to his dismissal of a genre that he supposedly helped create ("Birth of heavy metal? Should've been aborted!"), he's the crazy grandpa that we all…well, don't really want, but want to hear stories about. Ginger Baker was a crazy young man and has remained a crazy old man.

Hopefully someday he'll get the respect that HE so richly deserves.

SMALL APARTMENTS

Loneliness is tough.

Especially when you don't know just how lonely you really are and all you really want to do is get out of America and into Switzerland. That's only part of the lesson in Jonas Akerlund's Small Apartments. It's an adaptation of Chris Millis' book about a young man (played by Little Britain's Matt Lucas) who is a loser in just about every sense of the word. He lives in an apartment between an angry old man (James Caan) and an angry young man (Johnny Knoxville). Nothing seems to go his way until the dead body of his landlord (Peter Stormare) appears on his kitchen floor.

But, of course, the movie isn't really about this dead body.

It's really about a brother's love and the need to be free…from whatever it is that's imprisoning you. It's also about Billy Crystal (who plays a fire detective on the trail of a killer/arsonist) outshining everyone else in the film. We can only hope that this is a late career turn-around for the not so much respected anymore comedian. He's darker here than I've ever seen him. Luckily, every performance is nearly as good. It helps that they all have so much to work with. All of the characters have a full arc of development. Like the titular living space, there's really no room to waste in this film.

PAUL WILLIAMS STILL ALIVE

Paul Williams isn't a household name anymore, but for about five years in the 70s he was hard to get away from.

He was on tv just about every week, whether on Hollywood Squares, The Love Boat, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson or guest hosting just about any talk show. All of those appearances nearly overshadowed the fact that he was one of the best classic songwriters of his generation. He's part of what I like to call "vaudeville pop."

His songs were old-fashioned and, of course, not as cynical or outlandish as the other folks in this loose genre (Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, Leon Russell). He leaned more towards a lonely Cole Porter. Songs like "We've Only Just Begun," "Rainy Days And Mondays," "Evergreen, "Out In The Country" and, of course, "The Rainbow Connection" made him, quite possibly, the most popular songwriter of the 70s. Then, just like that , he was gone.

As filmmaker Stephen Kessler said, he died too young. BUT he didn't die. He just disappeared into a cloud of addiction. When Kessler found this out, he had to make a movie about him to tell people that their favorite diminutive songwriter was still alive. The movie is almost as much about their budding friendship (he basically goes from stalker to brother) as it is about Williams' life, but it works so well that you just kind of figure that's how it's supposed to be. After all, what's better for overcoming the loneliness that Williams always wrote about than making a friend?

WE ARE LEGION: THE STORY OF THE HACKTIVISTS

Fox News calls them terrorists, but when they're really only out to take down child porn sites, white supremacists, and Scientologists it's hard to see them that way.

Anonymous has been the fly in the ointment for plenty of possibly evil groups for the past 10 or so years.

But who are they?

Where did they come from?

What are they really out there for?

Brian Knappenberger set out to answer some of these questions, and even gets a few of the members of the notoriously secretive activist group to talk on screen. Through interviews with people who have worked with them in the past and even a few current members. I kind of wish that Knappenberger had been able to get more interviews with members of the groups that were in Anonymous' cross-hairs, but I guess it's pretty hard to get time with people who know that they're in the wrong.

We Are Legion does more, though, than tell us the story of this particular hacktivist group and its targets. It shows us how activism is still alive and well and, best of all, that it still works. It needs to be gone about in different ways from the past, but it's still viable and there are still millions of people who are willing to be a part of the movement.

Against all odds, this movie became one of the more emotional documentaries that I saw if only because it showed the true power of numbers that you never knew were there.

Note: My actual favorite film of the festival was the last film I saw, but I can't really count it as a new film, so it's not officially part of the list.

Yellow Submarine is being re-released in a beautifully hand-restored print. That movie is a part of my childhood and I will always love it. It was amazing to finally see it on the big screen.

Second Look: DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK

$
0
0
“In a really f-cked up way, this is probably the most fun I’ve ever had...”

Unfortunately, the age of mainstream Grindhouse cinema (If that isn’t an oxymoron) has passed.

Gone are such wonderful exploitation titles as Ilsa: She-Wolf of the SS and Driller Killer which relied upon violence and gore to shock and entice the viewer, usually also with the use of sex and nudity.  Notorious for their low budgets, unknown actors and bloody, exploitative material and subject matter, Grindhouse movies are actually good fun if you take them as cheap, disposable and often cheesy entertainment.

For they held no airs and graces about them, they did exactly what they set out to do.

Dead Hooker in a Trunk is the 2009 feature film debut of Canadian twins Jen and Sylvia Soska, who wrote, directed and starred in this tale of four friends having one really bad day.

‘Badass’ and her geeky twin sister (Sylvia and Jen Soska respectively) come across the body of a hooker in the former’s car trunk.

With Badass and her junkie friend (Rikki Gagne, a friend of the twins) unable to remember what they did the previous night, they panic and decide to bury the body, aided by Geek’s reluctant goody-two-shoes Bible bashing best friend (CJ Wallis, another friend to the Soska’s and also the film’s editor and cinematographer) which is harder than it sounds.

For all the while they are stalked by a mysterious cowboy, haunted by a depraved serial killer and have to contend with the both the police and psychotic Yakuza as their quest simultaneously brings them closer together and further apart.

The story is actually quite good, having the characters slowly become more and more involved with the events to different degrees, and trying to give them all equal screen time so as make them more than mere cannon fodder.

In this respect it plays out almost like a twisted buddy comedy or a road movie made by Ted Bundy and Eli Roth. This is where the macabre humour of the twins feels right at home, with panic, violence and missing limbs the order of the day as the mayhem just gets completely out of control.

Yet the rest of the film is made up of other styles, which sometimes don’t gel as well.

The thriller and investigation elements also work well on their own, with a relatively solid plot coming together as the mystery of the hooker unfolds, but sometimes this takes back seat to the shenanigans of the foursome and their encounters with the various wacky characters of varying levels of derangement. So one moment they’ll be discussing this mayhem around a campfire in a surprisingly subtle and smooth scene, whilst the next a man will be tortured gruesomely with the contents of a toolbox. This swift change of pace, as well the strange idea to insert black humour into some of their more violent scenes, may be a little too jarring for some viewers. Others will love it.

Cast-wise, the actors are surprisingly competent.

In what is a polished first attempt, the Soskas and their friends portray the gang of four in their own way, with personalities and banter that mix, grind against each other and give the group a dynamic. Particular merit has to go to CJ Wallis as Goody Two-Shoes, who grounds proceedings and acts as an oft-ignored moral compass to Badass and Junkie, whilst being tormented by his feelings for best friend Geek. Other cast members include the unknown, yet experienced, Jon Tench as the cowboy, a role he clearly takes to with much gusto and plays for all it is worth without being hammy or ridiculous (Though, in a film such as this that wouldn’t be too far amiss).

The biggest name, and possibly the main reason this film has become known (Aside from its title and endorsement by Eli Roth) is independent movie icon Carlos Gallardo (Star of the Robert Rodriguez debut El Mariachi) who plays an odd taxi driver that picks up Goody Two-Shoes.

Gallardo is no stranger to independent movies and is a fine actor, whose scene almost adds a bizarre second layer of spirituality and symbolism to the film. For a moment it is in danger of falling into pretentious student art-house territory, but it then ratchets up the pace again with new revelations, some trashy violence and genuinely interesting character development.

So despite (Or perhaps because of) its unusual title and the fact that it is endorsed by cinema lunatic Eli Roth, Dead Hooker in a Trunk provides fine amounts of intrigue, chasing, panic, plot and enough gratuitous swearing and Grindhouse violence to keep you entertained from start to finish.

But what if it doesn’t give you at least some satisfaction, or leaves you wishing it weren’t so shallow?

Just look at the title.

It's a hell of a gene pool that connects Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks and Michelle Pfeiffer by blood.

Mine would look like Ernest Borgnine, Rose Marie and Slappy White.

Based on a true story, People Like Us, is a romantic dramedy without romance, but rather two lost siblings finding one another and building a relationship.

Olivia Wilde also stars which only proves that it's only based on a true story since the attractiveness level of this film is pretty damn high.

The directorial debut of screenwriter Alex Kurtzman, People Like Us arrives in theaters on June 29th.

Now, at last, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century trilogy reaches its apocalyptic finale!

In this third and final chapter, our narrative draws to its cataclysmic close in London 2009. The magical child whose ominous coming has been foretold for the past hundred years has now been born and has grown up to claim his dreadful heritage. His promised aeon of unending terror can commence, the world can now be ended starting with North London, and there is no League, extraordinary or otherwise, that now stands in his way. The bitter, intractable war of attrition in Q'umar crawls bloodily to its fifth year, away in Kashmir a Sikh terrorist with a now-nuclear-armed submarine wages a holy war against Islam that might push the whole world into atomic holocaust, and in a London mental institution there's a patient who insists that she has all the answers.

It's a spectacular finish that must be seen to be believed.

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN (VOL III): CENTURY (#3 of 3) "2009" by Alan Moore & Kevin O'Neill arrives this June!

CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 Has A Release Date

Two years from today you might just be watching the second Captain America movie.

Disney and Marvel have announced that the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger will be coming out April 4th 2014. So while we still have a lot of time to wait, I suppose we can all rest a little easier knowing that it's being made. But to be honest I wasn't really losing a lot of sleep over it.

The follow-up is said to pickup where The Avengers leaves off and will continue to tell Cap's story as he works with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury. Even though Captain America has had some time to adjust to his new time period, he's still having some difficulty with his situation.

JIMMY SMITS Will Star in SONS OF ANARCHY

SAMCRO will have a new danger to deal with when Jimmy Smits enters the picture of Sons of Anarchy.

According to Deadline, Smits will be joining the cast of the show for a season-long arc in the upcoming fifth season of the biker drama. This is a notable change for the alum of NYPD Blue and Dexter. He was on side of the law in those shows. I know you Dexter fans are yelling at me right now, his role was complicated but he was still the ADA.

In his role as Neron "Nero" Padilla, he will be a "Latino gangbanger with an exit strategy who becomes a dangerous mentor for Jax." His character won't be dressed like Smits' past role and is said to have lots of tattoos and be possibly darker than his Prado character on Dexter.

He also has credits as a good guy on shows like LA Law, The West Wing and Outlaw.

Sons already has a fifth and sixth season ordered from the network and will probably also have a a seventh season because of creator Kurt Sutter's recent 3-year deal. He has noted earlier that he would like to go way back and show the formation of the motorcycle club and the origins of the Redwood Originals.
