How Online is Becoming a Key Requirement in Many Games

$

Gaming enjoys a remarkable level of popularity today that, not so long ago, would have amazed all but the most forward-thinking people. No longer just the reserve of teenage boys and introverts, more and more people are discovering the joys of computer games. A key part of this is the ability to connect with others through the online element of various games. This has helped them to become a genuinely social activity, rather than something to be enjoyed in isolation.

Historically, online gaming was something that happened with a handful of very specific PC games. Technology in this area has evolved so rapidly that today we play multiplayer games on our smartphones with friends and family possibly on the other side of the world.

There are several reasons why this evolution has happened so quickly and why so many experts in this field, not to mention the developers of the games themselves, agree that online gaming is the way of the future and are devoting so much attention and resource to it as a result.

THE FINEST HOURS (review)

Review by Elizabeth Robbins
Produced by Dorothy Aufiero, James Whitaker
Screenplay by Eric Johnson, Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy
Based on The Finest Hours by Michael J. Tougias & Casey Sherman
Directed by Craig Gillespie
Starring Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster,
Holliday Grainger, John Ortiz, Eric Bana

The rescue of the seaman on the SS Pendleton, during a furious, February Nor'Easter off the coast of Cape Cod is one of the most daring rescues in U.S. Coast Guard history.

It is the perfect subject for an all out action/disaster film, and wonderful way to immortalize the bravery of Coast Guardsmen.

For such an extraordinary story, The Finest Hours is a very ordinary.

This Hollywood-ized telling of the events follows a cookie-cutter recipe for a heartfelt film.

Director Craig Gillespie follows the "Disney formula" for success to a T.

We spend the first 15-20 minutes of the film getting to know earnest Coast Guardsman Bernie Webber, played by Chris Pine. He's good-natured, hardworking, and by- the-book, but with a past. He labors under the constant shadow of a failed rescue. He meets future wife Miriam (Holiday Grainger), and we see their courtship unfold, setting up a movie's worth of the tearfully worried love interest who pines away onshore, fretting her love's return. Miriam's story seems grafted into the larger story, its purpose to appeal to the female viewer.

Almost as an afterthought, we meet the crew of the SS Pendleton, the doomed oil tanker.

WITNESS THE TRUE STORY THAT INSPIRED MOBY-DICK

Experience one of the greatest true stories ever told when “In the Heart of the Sea” arrives onto Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital HD. Oscar winner Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”) directs the action adventure “In the Heart of the Sea,” based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex, a New England whaling ship.

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story.

“In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

Console Loyalty Is Not A Choice

$

When I was a small warthog...er, I mean child, as well as watching The Lion King repeatedly, collecting dinosaur magazines and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics that came with free stickers and bubblegum, I played a lot of video games.

Sure, this is no surprise given I now write about them but my point is, I was one of few households in the 80s who owned a games console.

Back then, gaming was new and for a while it didn't really take off, presumably children back then preferred going outside or more likely, there was only one television set in the house and when your mum wasn't watching her soap operas, your dad seemed to be watching the football constantly.

My dad owned an Atari 2600, a Commodore 64 and later a Sega Master System. Fortunately for him, console wars weren't a factor so early on in gaming's history so owning three different consoles was (albeit for lucky sods who could afford it) no big deal.

I have early memories of playing on all three so naturally, when I was around 8 or 9, I received a Christmas gift that I will always remember fondly. My very own console, a Sega Mega Drive (or Sega Genesis to you American folk)!

Already, you'll note that, due to my father's predilection for the previous Sega console, I was naturally ordained into the Sega camp. Obviously, as a kid you don't really get a choice which side you are on.

Very quickly, the other kids at school and myself began to form factions - those who owned Nintendo consoles and those who owned Sega consoles. But wait? Your best friend got a Nintendo?! That's it, friendship over, what a traitor!

Little did my friends know, I was one of those traitors but in my defence, I didn't choose to be one - it was my not yet born baby sister's fault!

I had been an only child for 5 years so when my parents discovered they were pregnant, I was sat down and told that soon, I would have a little sister. Obviously fearing that I would be upset (which, I wasn't - in fact, I was kind of indifferent), I was then given a present. I remember thinking this was odd and wondered why my parents didn't have new babies all the time. As I unwrapped my consolatory gift, I remember feeling joy, followed by fear, then joy again! A GAME BOY!

Traitor or not, I didn't care. I could take this to boring family events because it was portable!

Back then, nothing was portable, your phone went as far as the cord would allow.

The day my sister was born this is what I remember; sitting in the waiting room of the hospital with my nan, it was raining outside and I was playing Tetris.

As I grew older, despite also owning a Game Boy (thanks for being born, sis!), I remained loyal to Sega but I would occasionally play on my cousin's SNES.

I remember feeling like a spy, despite the fact I enjoyed playing on the SNES, I would pretend to my friends that it wasn't as good as the Mega Drive because I still considered myself as a Sega girl.

After all, a super fast blue hedgehog was way cooler than a fat plumber, so screw Nintendo! I didn't tell my friends about my Game Boy, I feared if I did and if I showed it to them, they would all want to play it. I didn't fear their wrath I just didn't want to share, my Game Boy was my precious.

Soon, the feuding factions lost interest in their war (because we were kids and toy companies were making tonnes of other stuff to distract us) but it wasn't until 1995 - twenty one years ago.... (oh, God!) that things began to change.

Sony landed on the scene, quietly and surreptitiously and in hushed tones. Out of nowhere, it seemed as though everyone was talking about PlayStation. It remained a kind of enigma to me, I knew very little about it.

Mostly because by 1997, the N64 (with it's weird controller) was released here in the UK and I remember playing every multiplayer game under the sun with my new high school friends.

It was all about Mario Cart 64.

I was having way too much fun to care about the Great Console War or any new fangled console for that matter.

It wasn't actually until 1999, when my sister and I were bought a PlayStation as a joint Christmas gift that I finally understood the hype.

This was the big girl console, this had the big girl games and big girl graphics. It had shiny DISCS!

Why do I have to share with my 5 year old sister?!..argh!

Again, my console loyalty was chosen for me by my parents. Except, I was also starting to explore PC gaming and it became less about what you were playing games on, but what games you were playing. Games had changed, they had better stories and life-like characters (seriously though, I still don't know how we thought blocky figures looked like real people, what was wrong with us?!).

By the time I left high school, my gaming education was a varied one and I decided one of the first things I would buy when I got my first job was a new console. It took a fair while to save up though (I did't realise that 16 year olds get paid in buttons and bottle caps). Eventually, now aged 17, I made a decision to buy a different console, one I'd had no experience of. Maybe it was because I was in my rebellious stage?

On my meagre wage, I couldn't afford a brand new console so I bought a second hand one from a friend who worked in a Game store. It was an almost shiny Xbox. A hefty, brick of a console that whirred so much, I used to think there were helicopters flying overhead. I fell in love with it immediately though, I bought this with my own money and this was all mine.

So this time, it wasn't my parents or my sister that was to blame for my shift in loyalty, but my hormones. I started embarking in LAN parties with my friends and online gaming became a big part of my life. Unlike other Xbox gamers who often played on their own, me and my friends utilised it for social gatherings.

I was enjoying sharing my interest with other people so much so that the following Christmas, I asked my parents for a GameCube because I remembered how fun their multiplayer games were.

I did the unthinkable though...

I tried it convince my Xbox friends to buy a GameCube. I wasn't mocked or laughed at but I certainly wasn't taken seriously.

Eventually, I stopped nagging them and decided that I would take my GameCube with me when I went to University. After all, the original Xbox wasn't exactly portable.

I did exactly that and it was an activity that bonded 6 or so strangers immediately.

Our university nights, while still full of drinking, would be centred around the GameCube and not around nightclubs or bars.

Naturally, when the Wii arrived on the scene, I was still a student and living with my friends so I bought one on release day (Thanks, student loan! This time it's your influence!).

Playing Wii games became our go-to activity whenever we had other friends over and I remember being blown away by The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess controls because the motion sensor was fully utilised. If I wanted to fire an arrow, I could hold the controllers as if I was holding a bow.

I remember thinking that this was the future! Except, it really wasn't.

No other games really took full advantage of the controls in the same way.

But, I didn't care that much because who wanted to leave their house and pay to bowl when they could bowl in their own home on Wii Sports?!

Not us.

Socialising was a household affair from now on.

After the novelty of the Wii wore off, one of my housemates said they knew a guy who was selling an Xbox 360 for a really cheap price and suggested we all chipped in £20 each. I was all for it!

After all, the recession had hit by this point, which is why the guy was selling it so cheap. We would buy games, play them, trade them in for new games or borrow them at the library. We still played the Wii occasionally but that soon became rare.

When I first met husband, he was also a Xbox 360 owner and he and his friends would hang out and hold LAN parties for Halo 3: ODST. I hadn't played a Halo game in years and was soon re-acquainting myself with it. Our mutual love of games spawned our production company, Cheesemint Productions. Our name comes from Xbox Achievements, because one of the group who didn't play games as often as the rest of us used to called them 'cheesemints'.

We then found ourselves creating a comedy web series called Unlocked about a group of friends who live in a video game world much like Scott Pilgrim and now we're award-nominated filmmakers with multiple projects under our belts.

Check out our YouTube page for Unlocked and other videos: Cheesemint

When I eventually moved in with my now husband, I had to de-clutter but I also needed the extra cash as I had to get used to the rent no longer being being split between four. So, I traded in my Wii and all the games and sold my part of the Xbox 360.

My husband already owned a 360 and we eventually upgraded to the Xbox One. I still sometimes think about poor Sega's demise and I always come close to buying a Nintendo console whenever a new Zelda game is released. As for Sony, there are games I desperately want to play that are PS4 exclusives so perhaps one day, if I ever make enough money from filmmaking or writing, I'll own all of them.

Looking at my console history, I'm either a traitorous bitch or maybe there's just no such thing as console loyalty? However, growing up through the Sega-Nintendo console war, there was just no avoiding it.

The consoles you play on aren't always chosen by you, sometimes your parents, your annoying kid sister, hormones and even a recession can cause a shift in your gaming habits.

Though to be completely honest I don't think it matters. Given how varied my gaming experience has been during my 30 years on this Earth, all I know now is that I love playing games and will play them on any console, in any format.

...I do still miss my Sega Mega Drive though.

The Great ZIEGFELD THEATRE, R.I.P.

I've lived in New York City for over 20 years now, so I've seen plenty of beloved places close.

I arrived in the Big Apple just as the Grindhouse and porn palaces were being turned into Disney stores and Starbucks shops.  I saw the opening and the closing of the Virgin Megastore, which in part replaced movie theaters that had long been a staple of the decaying Times Square of the 90s.

I frequented the various Kim's Video locations first for their bootleg VHS rentals, and last at their going out of business Blu-ray bin during the closure of their last remaining East Village haunt.

But the granddaddy end-of-an-era event for New York moviegoers occurred today with the closure of the Ziegfled Theatre.

Stream On: New To Neflix in February

By Erin Maxwell

February is a bit of a lackluster month for the streaming giant, as audiences are forced to say goodbye to Doctor Who and all of the Pokemon ever created in exchange for a handful of mediocre titles from the early 2000s.

On the bright side, Netflix is started to come out of the gate with its amped up slate of original programming, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny and original comedy specials.

FEBRUARY 1

Armageddon (1998)
Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck save the world from a giant asteroid in this 1998 actioner, a time when this sentence didn’t seem as ridiculous. Proof of that lies in the TWO asteroid movies that were available at the time. But only one had an Aerosmith ballad. (Hint: It was this one.)

Better Call Saul (Season 1)
The rest of the world has finally caught up with the genius that is Bob Odenkirk. The former Mr. Show star expands his role as “criminal lawyer” Saul Goodman (aka James Morgan "Jimmy" McGill) in this Breaking Bad spin-off.

Charlie's Angels (2000)
Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu star in this mediocre big screen adaptation of the ‘70s hit show that made enough money to push out an unfortunate sequel.

We are t-minus under two months away from the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and all sorts of news tidbits, and merchandise about the film have been released.

Two of the most iconic superheroes of all-time duking it out on the silver screen is a marketing dream come true and the new photos released provided a very big tease that will have implications throughout the DC Comics cinematic universe.

The Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel graced the cover of Empire magazine, which included exclusive photos from the upcoming film.

The one image in particular that has everyone geeking out is the tease of Darkseid!

What’s interesting here is that Batman is wearing his “Knightmare” costume from the teaser trailer where Superman pulls off his mask. Most assume that this is some sort of dream sequence, but the scorched Omega symbol indicates this is more than a bad case of REM sleep.

Produced by Kiefer Liu,
Michael Wehrhahn, Robert Harris
Screenplay by Szeto Kam-Yuen,
Edmond Wong, Lola Huo, Dali Chen
Story by Wu Cheng'en
Starring Donnie Yen, Chow Yun-fat,
Aaron Kwok, Joe Chen, Peter Ho,
Kelly Chen, Zhang Zilin, Gigi Leung

At the center of The Monkey King: Havoc in Heaven's Palace is a performance by Donnie Yen as the title character that is so committed and lunatic that it defies belief.

The action superstar has been defined for decades by the contrast between his calm, subdued exterior and the violence he deals at a moment's notice, so it's a surprise to see him prancing and mugging as Sun Wukong, hidden under layers of makeup.  It's a convincing performance, but so irritating at times that it's hard to appreciate.

The movie around him follows the latter note.

It's 100 minutes of puerile humor, bite-sized philosophy and CGI onslaught, though it feels longer.

Based on the first several chapters of the novel, the movie basically functions as Sun Wukong's origin story, beginning with his birth following a protracted battle between the forces of gods and demons. It's table setting that goes on for an unforgivably long time before the benevolent Jade Emperor (Chow Yun Fat) banishes the Bull Demon King (Aaron Kwok) to a hellish CGI landscape for all eternity. Wukong is born from the aftermath of that battle, and the Demon King quickly recognizes him as a pawn to be used to force his way to heaven and overthrow the gods.

Kickstart This! OGN 'BLACK' Answers The Question, "What If Only Black People Had Super Powers?"

Timed to Black History Month Comes a Kickstarter Campaign
to fund an Independent Original Graphic Novel, BLACK,
Illustrated by Inkpot-Award winning artist Jamal Igle (Molly Danger, Supergirl)

Timed to Black History Month comes a Kickstarter campaign to fund the new independent superhero science fiction original graphic novel BLACK, from Kwanza Johnson p/k/a Kwanza Osajyefo, the former DC Comics Digital Editor who helped launched the company’s Zuda imprint, and Tim Smith III (Iron Man, The Amazing Spider-Man). BLACK, illustrated by Inkpot-Award winning artist Jamal Igle (Molly Danger, Supergirl), asks the question, “In a world that already fears and hates them – what if only Black people had superpowers?” BLACK follows the story of a young man, Kareem Jenkins, who, having miraculously survived being shot by police, learns that he is part of the biggest lie in history. Kareem must decide whether it's safer to keep history’s secret, or if the truth will set him free. Rounding out BLACK’s creative team are DC Comics illustrator Khary Randolph, who will contribute covers and additional artwork, and editor Sarah Litt, formerly of Vertigo and DC Comics.

“With BLACK, we’re looking to tell a great story, but we’re also purposefully challenging the pop culture status quo, which is dominated by a White male aesthetic,” says BLACK co-creator Kwanza Osajyefo. “BLACK tackles the very real and palpable issue of race, which is at the forefront in America and around the world. We are trying to confront the issue of race head-on by creating a world in which only Black people are superheroes -- and the BLACK superhero trope isn’t subtly cast under a label of mutant, inhuman, or meta-whatever. It is also both thrilling and liberating to create the superheroes we’ve always wanted to see -- and, frankly, be -- outside of the entrenched publishing system.”

“Sometimes a project comes along and you realize you need to be a part of it. As soon as I saw what Kwanza and Tim had in mind, I knew I had to be involved. I've known all of the people involved for years, know how professional they are,” says Jamal Igle. “I'm all about unique twists and BLACK certainly fits the bill. It's going to be a fun ride.”

BLACK is a story that has come at an important moment in comic book culture. This is a book that brings a contemporary message of identity into a world where anything can happen. A world where creative writing and imaginative visuals can show an alternative to what you would normally see in mainstream books today,” says Tim Smith III.

If funded through the Kickstarter campaign launching February 1st, BLACK will be available digitally to backers as DRM-free PDFs in monthly installments, starting in mid 2016. The limited edition print run of the six-chapter BLACK graphic novel is due out late in 2016.

Despite this admiration and respect for his work, over the holiday, we realized that we did not own the Big Yum Yum Book, and that was an enormous error in judgement.

In order to not wallow too much in the glory of the past (which happens, but more offline), I try to keep reviews here constrained to comics and graphic novels released in the present and no more than three years back.
