Scrutinizing Rey and Finn as STAR WARS Tackles 2015's Identity Politics

$

As 2015 draws to a close, we’ve continued to see the dialogue around identity and the fractious reality of living out our differences together seep into many conversations about this here pop culture geek world.

Among them:

  • A renewed diversity wave in television with successes in Empire, Fresh Off The Boat, How To Get Away with Murder, Inside Amy Schumer, UnReal, Mr. Robot, Jane the Virgin and others.
  • Target ridding itself with boys’ and girls’ toys sections/labeling.
  • More scrutiny of downplaying female characters in action figure lines marketed to boys.
  • The rise of backlashing Sad Puppies, crying tyranny in sci-fi diversity, at the Hugo Awards.
  • Mad Max: Fury Road’s beautiful and brutal post-apocalyptic feminism.
  • Fun Home and Hamilton adding punchy vibrance to Broadway.
  • South Park’s head-twisting satire on so-called political correctness culture.
  • Anticipation and dread awaiting both Wonder Woman and Black Panther’s film debuts.
  • Jessica Jones and its depiction of Kilgrave’s mental powers as rape, and Jones’ trauma related to it, plus superpowered, interracial sex scene with Luke Cage and her history of queer romantic relationships, too.

But that’s not all. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens dominated the pop culture year, arguably before the film even was released December 18.

Stream On: What's On Netflix In January

Written by Erin Maxwell

Welcome to the feast of film that is Netflix in January.

Oodles and oodles of films, ranging from important docs to fly-by-night slasher pics will be available to the streaming service in the new year.

For the naysayers who say there is nothing on Netflix streaming, this is the month that Netflix decided to throw everything and the kitchen sink at you. Enjoy!

JANUARY 1

2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
Before it was a worldwide phenomenon that became a money-making machine for Universal, it started with a simple Vin-free sequel in which Brian O'Conner moves to Miami where he pacts with feds to take down drug dealers. Car chases ensue.

Along Came Polly (2004)
Jennifer Aniston plays the part of the manic pixie dream girl to Ben Stiller’s schlubby financier in this lesser version of There’s Something About Mary.

American Girl: Grace Stirs up Success (2015)
When I begrudgingly took my my goddaughter to the American Girl store, I made two discoveries:
  1. American Girl as a line of live-action movies featuring actors you haven’t heard from in a while. This one has Virginia Madsen in it.
  2. The American Girl store has a full bar. Really. Like with real booze and everything.
Guess which discovery got the most mileage?

Angry Birds Toons: Season 1
The addicting phone game you forgot about has a cartoon.

Bring It On: Fight to the Finish (2009)
Bring It On: In It to Win It (2007)
The Bring It On straight-to-video franchise makes its way to Netflix, bringing the likes of Ashley Benson and Christina Milian to people who are morbidly curious about cheerleading routines and people who will create a drinking game out of anything.

Catwoman (2004)
Remember when this happened? It takes a certain amount of talent to destroy such a beloved comic icon so completely and thoroughly. Bravo.

A movie so painful to watch I’ve actually flinched in several places.

The Celebrity Plastic Surgeons of Beverly Hills: Season 1
Watch as docs cash in on the 5/7 of the Deadly Sins.

Forensic Files: Collection 2
Successful docu-series that explains how forensic science is used to solve crime.

Friday Night Tykes: Season 1-2
A reality show about the uber-competitive world of pee-wee football in the great state of Texas.

The Good Road (2013)
Indian Oscar contender that weaves together a trio of stories following strangers who all travel down the same dusty highway.

House of Wax (2005)
Despite the name, this slasher (melter?) pic has nothing to do with the classic 1953, which I highly recommend you watch in lieu of this travesty. Starring Paris Hilton, Jared Paladecki and Elisha Cuthbert, teens face off against a madman with a wax museum. A great movie for those of you who don’t like Paris Hilton.

How to Change the World (2015)
The story of Greenpeace and its founder Robert Hunter, who joined forces with like-minded and Earth-forward individuals make the world a better place.

There were no sarcasm in that last night, I promise.

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (2006)
As the great glaciers begin to melt, Manny the mammoth discovers he may not be on the brink of extinction as he meets Ellie, a lady mammoth who thinks she’s a possum.

Intolerable Cruelty (2003)
Coen brothers pic about a divorce attorney (George Clooney) who meets his match in Marylin Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a scorned ex-wife looking for revenge.

Journey to Le Mans (2014)
Patrick Stewart narrates this engaging look at the most prestigious and grueling motorsport race in the world.

Loins of Punjab (2007)
An Indian American Idol-esque contest becomes the focus of a New Jersey town as the residents become obsessed with who will be picked the next “Desi Idol”

Meet the Parents (2000)
Meet the Fockers (2004)
Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro go head-to-head as a man fails to impress his girlfriend’s father at every turn. Then his parents fail to impress him.

Nanny McPhee (2005)
Emma Thompson dons an un-makeover as transforms herself into a magical nanny for the seven Brown children and their widower father Cedric (Colin Firth). An adorable family pic for those looking for something off the beaten path.

Piku (2015)
Indian comedy about a woman who finds herself at odds with her elderly father, whose constant dietary issues and bizarre behavior threatens to drive them apart.

Pooh’s Heffalump Movie (2005)
A Disney pic for the kiddies that finds the residents of the Hundred Acre Wood on the hunt for the fearsome Heffalump.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Keira Knightley stars as feminist icon and Jane Austin heroine Elizabeth Bennett in this decent version of the classic love story.

The Rundown (2003)
The Rock plays a bounty hunter who teams with his target (Seann William Scott) to fight an evil treasure hunter played by Christopher Walken, who apparently wanted a beach house around the time this script was making the rounds.

Shout Gladi Gladi (2015)
Meryl Streep narrates this documentary about Ann Gloag, a nurse who travels through Malawi and Sierra Leone helping women who suffer from obstetric fistula.

Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball (2010)
Starring Tom Berenger…

I’ll stop right there.

Something New (2006)
Sanaa Lathan is an uptight, single career woman who finds love with her hottie landscaper (Simon Baker), who happens to be white.

Stephen Fry Live: More Fool Me (2014)
Part of his More Fool Me book tour, Brit funnyman Fry discusses his live and love of Oscar Wilde in this intimate chat with fans.

Swordfish (2001)
John Travolta, Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman star in this mediocre crime thriller about a hacker who is recruited by bank robbers thanks to skills behind a keyboard.

The Tale of Despereaux (2008)
CGI toon about the brave and courageous mouse who helps a kingdom, saves his people and rescues a princess despite his small size.

We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
Gripping and brutal film starring Tilda Swinton as a mother who is looking to rebuild her life after the destruction caused by her sociopathic son. Ezra Miller turns in an Oscar worthy performance as the unsettling Kevin.

The Wedding Date (2004)
Cute rom-com with a slight twist. Debra Messing cashes in her 401k and hires a professional escort to accompany her to her sister’s wedding in London.

The Whole Ten Yards (2004)
In the sequel to The Whole Nine Yards, former neighbors Matthew Perry and ex-mafiosa Bruce Willis must re-team after Perry’s love (and Willis’ ex-wife) is kidnapped by a former associate.

Video Gaming Round-Up 2015

$

New Year's Eve approaches, which can only mean one thing: END OF YEAR LISTS!

I love compiling my round up of 2015 and try to choose games that stood out personally to me. 2015 on first glance seemed a bit bare on the gaming front until I realised that in the same year as it was announced, Fallout 4 was also released!

I am still playing this game and intend to do so right up until February...or March...or forever?

With so many great games to take me into 2016, I will not be suffering from the January blues this year and hopefully, after reading my list and following my recommendations for games to catch up on, go back to or start anew, neither will you dear reader, neither will you.

Without further delay, here are my personal top 5 picks from 2015, if I've left your favourite off the list, go make your own or simply whine at me in the comments, I love that and will most definitely pay it no mind.

WONDER WOMAN: EARTH ONE by Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette (graphic novel review)

Review by Clay N Ferno
Written by Grant Morrison
Art and Cover by Yanick Paquette
Published by DC Comics
Released on April 6, 2016
ISBN-10: 1401229786 / ISBN-13: 978-1401229788
Price: $22.99

DC Comics gave us a sneak peak into Grant Morrison's Wonder Woman: Earth One Vol. 1 hardcover coming out in April of next year. It may be a few months before you can lasso this hefty treat into your hands, so we thought we would give you a sneak peak.

The Earth-One series, for comic fans, delivers what the title implies. This self-contained universe allows creators to take on DC heroes under an umbrella imprint that is easy for mainstream audiences to pick up at the local chain bookstore. I've been enjoying these Earth One with stories from writers Geoff Johns, J. Michael Straczynski, Jeff Lemire and art by heavy hitters Shane Davis, Gary Frank and Terry Dodson.

Wonder Woman: Earth One Vol. 1 showcases one of our favorite Grant Morrison Batman, Inc. artists, the versatile and award winning Yanick Paquette. With Morrison's plan for icons and superheroes laid out in his book Supergods: Our World in the Age of the Superhero (2011), the Scottish writer's twirling take on his remaining hero of the DC Trinity, Wonder Woman, is highly anticipated.

THE BEST OF BUTT NUMB-A-THON 2015

$

Written by Mark Wensel

Ok, so this may be old news at this point, but it’s the only opportunity I’ve had to let you all know the awesome movies that played at this year’s birthday party for Harry Knowles at Ain’t It Cool News.

I’ll start with the three new ones that are among the five best of the day.

ANOMALISA (2015)
Directed by Charlie Kaufman/Duke Johnson
Written by Charlie Kaufman
Based on a play by Charlie Kaufman

Charlie Kaufman is known for his portraits of depressed people going through surreal adventures. Anomolisa is no different, but it’s also so very, very different. This time, he focuses his eye on Michael Stone (voiced by David Thewlis), a man going through a special version of a mid-life crisis. He’s married and has a young son, but he’s starting to think that he may not love them anymore. In fact, he’s beginning to see everyone with the same face and the same voice (Tom Noonan). While on a business trip, he meets a young lady who is like no one else he’s ever known. Her name is Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and she’s an anomaly.

This stop motion film pinpoints how it feels to be in a relationship with severe depression. It’s beautifully animated and voice-acted and, like all Kaufman films, it’s not a happy film, but it’s really funny. Definitely one of my favorite films of the year.

EDDIE THE EAGLE (2016)
Directed by Dexter Fletcher
Written by Sean Macaulay/Simon Kelton

Anybody remember the 1988 Winter Olympics? I mean, for something besides the Jamaican bobsled team? Well, there was another unlikely hero that year. Eddie Edwards (Taron Egerton) was the British ski-jump team. He was actually the first British ski-jumper in many years. He wasn’t good, by any means, but he became a world-wide phenomenon.

There’s a lot of “been there, done that” in this movie, but it’s so well written and so well acted that none of that matters. Taron is perfect as the rather anti-social young man who defied everything to do what he loved. And, of course, Hugh Jackman is great as a pretty stereotypical drunk coach who just doesn’t want to be a coach

What really hit me about this movie was the tone. This is an 80s ski movie. All that’s missing is the “I gotta get laid” subplot. The music, the cinematography, some of the dialogue…that scene of Hugh skiing. It’s all hilarious, but it doesn’t distract from the heartfelt story that is the basis of the whole thing. It’s got the potential to be the Cool Runnings of this year.

THE REVENANT (2015)
Directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
Written by Mark L Smith/Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
Based in part on a novel by Michael Punke

Living on the frontier in the 1820s isn’t easy. Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) and John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) are part of a crew of trappers who have to battle Indians and the elements on a daily basis. When Glass is mauled by a bear (in one of the most intense animal attack scenes I’ve ever seen), he’s left for dead by Fitzgerald and young Jim Bridger (Will Poulter). Somehow, though, he doesn’t die…and begins a trek to get his revenge.

Filmed in the actual elements you see on screen (not a single CGI snowflake was used), this is one of the most brutal non-horror films I’ve seen in a long time. Just the bear attack scene alone is worthy of any gore film, but even without the action and brutality, the story of revenge and greed is enough to make any filmgoer squirm for some form of let up. All three of the leads deserve all of the accolades they’ll get. And don’t you worry. They’ll get them.

Now, let’s take a look at the two best vintage films we saw.

BTW, Happy 6th Anniversary to Forces of Geek

$

Wow.  Six years.

I totally forgot until I ran into an old friend, who asked me when the site launched.

So, what does it mean?  The site started as an offshoot of my old site, Forces of Good.  After my father became ill with Alzheimer's, I took a break and then decided to relaunch with something fresh and new, Forces of Geek.

Although it seemed fresh, in the coming months we were caught in the wave of Geek Culture transforming into mainstream culture and the word "geek", becoming a marketing term.

I've made plenty of mistakes and have had a number of victories. This has been a tremendous learning opportunity. The site has been an anchor as I dealt with personal issues like my father's death and a cancer diagnosis of both my mother and sister weeks apart.  Sometimes the site suffered, but I never stopped working.

I've cultivated a philosophy that costs us traffic, but let's me maintain my integrity; Forces of Geek is not about bashing or click baiting.  We've done it when we were starting out, and it's not worth it.  I'm not here to trick you for traffic; I want to entertain you, inform you and brighten your day for at least a few minutes.

Mark Millar
Writer / Chief Architect of the Millarverse / co-creator Kick-Ass, Wanted, Kingsman: The Secret Service
@mrmarkmillar | millarworld.tv

Best Movies: I want to say Kingsman, but I'm possibly slightly biased so I'll opt for two Adam Driver movies. When We Were Young, which is great, and a little movie called Star Wars.
Best TV Shows: I haven't really watched TV much since I was in my mid-teens. Maybe a box-set every year or two. The Mad Men finale I think the only thing I watched this year and it was great. Doe Netflix original count? If so I also loved Daredevil. No, make that worshiped. It was flawless.
Best Books (fiction): We're working our way through all the Enid Blyton books with the children right now. So I'm a big fan of them.
Best Books (non-fiction): I'm reading Burt Reynolds autobiography today, which I've almost read in a single sitting.
Best Video Game: I haven't played games since Sonic, circa 1992. Just not my thing.
Best Songs: I'm a Dad. You don't want to know.
Best Albums: See above.
Best Music Video: See above.
Best Comic Books / Graphic Novels: Anything by Ian Culbard. Also anything by Scott Snyder and Jason Aaron and Jeff Lemire and Kelly Sue DeConnick. They're my American Fantastic Four.
Best Blu-ray/DVD Release:Kingsman. I got royalties.
Most overrated thing about 2015? Any sporting event. I loved Star Wars because the overkill let jocks know how I feel during the World Cup.
Most underrated thing about 2015? Hmm. Not sure. One of the nice things about social media is that anything good is rated. It's hard for quality to slip under the radar now, which is terrific. The small companies have the same chance as the big guys, which is why creator owned is thriving
Thing that you were most excited about in 2015? Leicester Square premiere of Kingsman was hugely exciting. I didn't even get to be in the crowd for that growing up as I lived so far away. I could only see it in the papers. We went to the Star Wars premiere in the same place a couple of weeks back with Mark Hamill, whom we became pals with during Kingsman, so that was very exciting too. It's been a really fun year.
Thing that disappointed you most in 2015? Ach, it would be rude to say. Whether comics or movies or whatever it's still people working their guts out and trying their best. People always see this stuff when they google and I'd hate to hurt anyone's feelings.
Thing that you're most looking forward to in 2016? Oh my God. Where do I started? Personally, working with Greg Capullo and Stuart Immonen and Sean Murphy again for Chrononauts 2 and Jae Lee at the end of the year plus Frank Quitely monthly. The Kingsman sequel starts shooting in late April and we're hopefully shooting Starlight, Superior and Huck this year too. As a fan I can't wait for more Scott Snyder creator owned and Jeff Lemire's new stuff and the Apocalypse and Deadpool movies, the Dr, Strange movie. Civil War looks good. Batman v Superman I'm keeping my fingers crossed for. A friend said to me years back that it must be weird not being into geek stuff because we have so much to look forward to and she was right. Every year.

Jason Kelly [Zac Efron] is one week away from marrying his boss’s uber-controlling daughter, putting him on the fast track for a partnership at the law firm. However, when the straight-laced Jason is tricked into driving his foul-mouthed grandfather, Dick [Robert De Niro], to Daytona for spring break, his pending nuptials are suddenly in jeopardy. Between riotous frat parties, bar fights, and an epic night of karaoke, Dick is on a quest to live his life to the fullest and bring Jason along for the ride. Ultimately, on the wildest journey of their lives, “dirty” Grandpa and his uptight grandson discover they can learn from one another and form the bond they never had.

This outlandish comedy also stars Julianne Hough, Aubrey Plaza, Dermot Mulroney and Adam Pally.
