The Top 5 Best And Worst Comic Book Video Games

$
0
0
Ahh, comics and video games. Two bastions of pop culture that in theory, when combined should create a harmonious, heavenly Nectar of the Geeks.

Sometimes, this happens and it is a wondrous thing, a miracle even, because for every great video game based on a comic there are ten absolutely abysmal ones.

It's as though the magical elixir of the two mediums is such a delicacy that only a special few know the recipe, these almighty alchemists execute their elixirs with skill while others hash together blander versions that pale in comparison.

Alchemy aside, as a lover of both comics and gaming I have compiled my top 5 of the best and the worst video games based on comics.

I'll begin with the worst, saving the best 'til last, you're welcome!

Freddy's New Nightmare

Written by Erin Maxwell

Do you sleep soundly at night?

Do you not feel the need to walk up every few hours to check the closet and doors?

Do you not suffer from an irrational fear that decrepit versions of Chuck E. Cheese characters are going to unhinge their mouths, bare their fangs and devour your soul?

Congrats. You’ve managed to live your life without ever playing Five Nights At Freddy’s.

And honestly, you are living a life half lived.

Mild Spoilers Ahead

The computer horror game can owe its success by capitalizing on fears everyone can related to: dark places, creepy music and giant bunnies with rotting exteriors and mucus eyes jumping out at you and eating your face.

On Thursday, the fourth installment became available for play in a surprise early release. In this prequel, no longer are you the night guard on some sort of second-rate minimal kiddie wonderland with a cursed history and terrible electrical system.

Instead, the furry nightmares from Freddy Fazbear's Pizza are now in the comforts of your own home, as you play the game from the point of view of a child whose playthings and familiar visitors have a taste for pint-size souls.

The Mythology of THE SIXTH GUN

Written by Lily Fierro

I really love westerns.

They seem to always have a paradoxical moral simplicity and complexity. They almost always have a protagonist with questionable motivations. And yet, the good almost always triumphs the evil, leading to an overwhelming catharsis for the reader or watcher (depending on the medium). Consequently, the simplicity of the fundamental structure of the basic western lends itself to transformation and evolution without losing its core.

After spending some time looking around for the next series to read, I found this list from IGN. Yes, I was a little weary of the source, but I figured I’d at least try to read something that other people are talking about.

After scrolling through, I settled on The Sixth Gun, a western set in Reconstruction era America.

The Sixth Gun is an excellent example of a successful transformation of a western. It has the archetypal characters and themes of a western with new layers of horror and the supernatural that could only occur in the comic book, rather than film, form. Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt, the creators of the series, realized that despite their inability to mimic the epic film landscapes and the tense duels in the comic book form, they had the ability to add fantasy elements that could not be captured in any old western films.

While The Sixth Gun adds innovative ideas and characters to the basic structure of the western, it also pays homage and reverence to a genre that the creators clearly love.

Review by Benn Robbins
Produced by Tom Cruise, J. J. Abrams,
Bryan Burk, David Ellison,
Dana Goldberg, Don Granger
Screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie
Story by Christopher McQuarrie, Drew Pearce
Based on Mission: Impossible by Bruce Geller
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie
Starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner,
Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson,
Ving Rhames, Sean Harris, Alec Baldwin

The latest installment in the inconceivable and indistinguishable movie series about the Impossible Missions Force finds Tom Cruise and company embroiled, yet again, in mystery and intrigue and deceit surrounding a mysterious shadow group a “Rogue Nation”, if you will, that have been responsible for every major world crisis in recent history.

They are the “anti” IMF. I know this because they actually tell me in the film, in case I wasn’t paying attention in between explosions or death defying stunts.

Writer/Director Christopher McQuarrie has finely crafted a tale so convoluted and crazy, that at certain points, I so glazed over that I had no idea what I was watching.

The strange thing was that I still had no problem following the inane plot no matter how many red herrings and McGuffins were thrown at me as I tuned out here and there.

It is action-packed and mindless.

It is also boring as hell.

AUGUST 1

Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein (1999)
Was anyone else aware that this happened? I feel like I was left out. Not that I’m a particular fan of the Chipmunks, but I do want to know when they meet up with classic Universal monsters.

Asylum (2005)
Featuring the late, great Natasha Richardson as a bored housewife who falls for one of her head-shrinker hubby’s patients.

Beneath the Helmet (2014)
Documentary following five Israeli teens as they are drafted into the army straight out of high school.

Bride and Prejudice (2004)
One of the better remakes of the classic Jane Austin rom-com fodder. This Bollywood version stars Aishwarya Rai as Lalita/Elizabeth and Martin Henderson as Darcy.

Casting By (2012)
A doc that takes focus on the unsung heroes of the film industry, the casting director.

Dear Frankie (2004)
Emily Mortimer plays a young mother who tells her son that his MIA pops is a merchant marine rather than a good-for-nothing lout. Hijinks ensue when dad’s supposed ship docks at a nearby port.

Dogs on the Inside (2014)
Documentary that takes a look at when puppy therapy is used on inmates.

Electric Slide (2014)
The Jim Sturgess starrer about a wannabe bank robbers in the ‘80s scored an uber-low 14% on Rotten Tomatoes.

So...there’s that.

Enemy at the Gates (2001)
Jude Law is a Russian sharpshooter who competes with Joseph Fiennes over the love of Rachel Weisz. This movie is sooooo 2000s it should come with a pair of Uggs.

Flex is King (2013)
Successful Kickstarter-funded-dance documentary set in Brooklyn that examines the next level of breakdancing.

The Living (2014)
The terror and horror of domestic abuse is treated ham-handedly in this indie drama that looks to tell both sides of the story.

November Rule (2015)
A womanizing scumbag with a heart of gold makes it a habit to break it off with his gal de jour whenever the holidays approach. But this time, he realizes too late that he just lost his perfect match. Surprisingly not written or directed by Tyler Perry.

Outcast (2014)
Pitch: Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen are in the Crusades…
Studio: Stop right there my friend. You just struck gold! Gold, I tell you!

This is what happens when you waste your magical wish of life on a bag of weed and it ends up writing a screenplay.

Pants on Fire (2014)
Disney comedy about a liar and every one of the liar’s lies come true.

Kind of like what happened to me on my first resume. Except for the part about Harvard.

Sorority Row (2009)
A solid B-list of hot chicks gets murdered in creative ways in this quickly-forgotten slasher pic.

War (2007)
Action pic starring Jet Li and Jason Statham in a movie that isn’t part of the Expendables franchise or The One, but not for lack of trying.

Wing Commander (1999)
Awful movie loosely based on the once popular videogame starring half the cast of Scooby-Doo.

Every film and comic book convention is different. Even conventions hosted by the same organisations usually have different guests and stall holders depending on their location and timing.

Some show exclusive movie trailers, screenings of previously unseen deleted scenes from top fantasy dramas, and some have demos of new games, or major Hollywood stars for Q&A sessions and signings.

No two conventions are the same, but it can be virtually guaranteed that somewhere in the sea of T-shirt stands and poster stalls, no matter which convention you’re at, you will meet at least one of the following kinds of people…

Coming to Grips with Hulk Hogan

$

For over 30 years, Hulk Hogan was a central figure in my life.

As a kid growing up in the 80s, he was akin to Superman.

Only, unlike the Man of Steel, I actually got to see Hulk Hogan live and in person at the Macon Coliseum as he accepted the task of taking the belt from an Iraqi sympathizing Sgt. Slaughter come Wrestlemania VII.

I watched him fight the enemies of America, I watched him vanquish giants and I watched him turn foes into friends just by being that good of a guy. My love for the man carried all through the 90s, even when he turned heel in 1996 to join the nWo. I was moved to tears in 2002 when he entered Wrestlemania 18 a villain, but through the sheer force of the crowd’s collective will, he left a hero.

I have Hulk Hogan action figures. I have Hulk Hogan posters. I even played Hulk Hogan’s theme song,  “Real American,” last year as my infant son was rolled into the hospital room to meet his family for the first time.

So, yes, Friday, July 24th, the day the world was made aware of the racist remarks Hulk Hogan made in private eight years ago, was a fairly large emotional blow for me.

Add to the fact that he's written almost four dozen books (take that, J.D. Salinger!), it's obvious that he's a force to be reckoned with.

His latest book, The Raven's Child, with collaborator Tom Brown is out tomorrow.

Tom (as seen above with his master, Kirby), took some time from writing to chat with us about the book, his upcoming project with Frank Cho and what pop culture he's currently indulging in.

Remembering Rowdy Roddy Piper

By Atlee Greene

To say that this has been a rough year for professional wrestling would be an understatement.

Industry icons Verne Gagne and Dusty Rhodes have passed on, Hulk Hogan was exposed for his racist comments, and this past Friday, Rowdy Roddy Piper died in his home in Hollywood, California due to cardiac arrest.

I guess this is one of those sad truths that we are getting older. People come, people go. Heroes rise, heroes fall.

“It is real! If we don’t do it correctly it will all fall apart. There’s some kind of reality there to it. I’m not talking about the activity in the ring. I’m taking about the whole construction of the entity of pro wrestling.”
– Rowdy Roddy Piper, 2013

The thing is, Piper himself would probably have refrained from calling himself a hero in the classical sense and probably looked at himself as someone who was “real” and took his craft inside the squared circle seriously in order to conduct the best piece of business possible.

Business.

That is the difference between contemporary wrestlers and those of the past.

Doing flashy moves, being slammed through the announcers table, or taking someone’s signature maneuver is just a hollow chain of events to get through a match. In the 70’s and 80’s, these spots were all part of a large and intricate design to draw as much money as possible.

Piper understood that better than most, which is why he was so successful, especially when you consider the fact that his prime was during the era where the big body builder types were the desired stars of wrestling promoters, including Vince McMahon.

CENTURIONS: Marketing Xtreme!

$

When I was a kid, there was a barrage of cartoons that were just gigantic advertisements for toys.

You see, early in the 1980s, the FCC revised its rules towards advertising and children’s programming; specifically, “character marketing.”

Basically, advertisers could now base entire cartoons and characters on a toy line and the FCC didn’t consider it advertising.  This opened the floodgates for corporations to make a cartoon that was really just a 30 minute ad and the FCC didn’t care.

Because this was so lucrative, we kids were bombarded with programs that showcased characters and vehicles that you could buy at the toy store rather than actual content.

Enter: The Centurions.

The Centurions are a team that, upon shouting "Power Extreme,” could fuse to exo-suits and save the day.

Originally, there were three: Max Ray (ocean specialist), Jake Rockwell (land specialist), and Ace McCloud (air specialist).  Besides having pornstar names, their mission was to stop the evil cyborg Doc Terror and his assistant, Hacker, from taking over the world using their drones called Traumatizers, Strafers, and Groundborgs.
