Ex Machina is about a breathtaking android (A.I.) whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated—and more deceptive—than man could have imagined. Making his directorial debut, Ex Machina was written and directed by Alex Garland (writer of 28 Days Later, Dredd) and stars Domhnall Gleeson (upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Unbroken), Alicia Vikander (upcoming The Circle, A Royal Affair) and Golden Globe-nominated actor Oscar Isaac (upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, A Most Violent Year).

After winning a competition to spend a week at the mountain estate of his company’s brilliant CEO (Isaac), programmer Caleb (Gleeson) arrives to discover he has been chosen to take part in a study of artificial intelligence. Sworn to secrecy and cut off from the outside world, Caleb meets his subject, a beguiling and seductive android (Vikander)—and is plunged into an A.I. experiment beyond his wildest dreams in this epic thriller charged with heart-stopping suspense.

The Blu-ray and DVD are packed with spellbinding extras including an in-depth behind-the-scenes featurette that examines the story development, the cast and characters, the production design, cinematography and location shooting in Norway, costumes and makeup and finally, visual effects along with a wrap-up. The discs also contain a Q&A with cast and crew from SXSW and eight vignettes.

And we're giving away 3 copies!

Is it Time for Superheroes to Use Guns?

This is an age-old debate that I believe it’s time to re-litigate now that we’re in the age of darker, grittier superhero movies and TV shows.

What’s got me thinking about this is Netflix’s Daredevil TV show.

I’m halfway through the first season and pretty much every episode involves Daredevil beating the crap out of someone for information.

And these are not ticking time bomb situations where if Daredevil doesn’t get some crucial information in the next five minutes a building will blowup killing hundreds people.

This is his standard interrogation strategy.

INFOGRAPHIC - The Evolution of ANT-MAN

There is a reason comic fans eagerly anticipate that first blurry shot of their favorite character’s costume after a cinematic adaptation is announced. True fans know that almost every comic book character in history has gone through numerous costume changes (except maybe the Hulk—tiny shorts and a bare green chest forever), and every fan wants to see their favorite character’s costume represented accurately on screen. Since comics are illustrated, turning hand-drawn ideas into tangible and realistic on-screen attire can be a challenge. Thankfully, though, it looks like the creative team behind the Ant-Man film has paged thoroughly through comic history and found the right mixture of both old and new for our favorite pin-sized superhero. As you "ant"icipate the film's release this Friday, enjoy reading up on Ant-Man's interesting evolution!

THEY’RE NOT LIKE US Vol. 1: ‘Black Holes for The Young’ (review)

They're Not Like Us V. 1: Black Holes for The Young TPB
Writer: Eric Stephenson
Artist: Simon Gane
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire

Cover Price: $9.99
Diamond ID: MAY150507
ISBN: 978-1632153142

Eric Stephenson (publisher of Image Comics, Nowhere Men) along with Simon Gane (Godzilla, The Vinyl Underground) and popular colorist Jordie Bellaire released a very punk rock comic on Christmas Eve last year.

Great time of year for gift-giving, maybe not so much for launching a new number one. Regardless of the timing, the first volume of They’re Not Like Us introduces us to a band of telekinetic teenagers led by the mysterious mod pretty boy The Voice.

Perhaps drawing inspiration from other Image titles like Phonogram, Chew and Morning Glories as well as the Valiant series Harbinger and IDW’s Locke and Key, these uniquely powered and outsider youngsters are forced to give up their previous lives to get on with a clean slate.

Image Comics is creeping on the Big Two for market-share and that’s largely due to the biggest names in creators bringing books to the creator-owned imprint.

At the top of the pyramid of the unique comics publisher is Eric Stephenson. It caught my eye to see what he is capable of as a comic writer, and I was not disappointed.

Review by Joshua Gravel

When a scientist officially announces that he and his team have successfully cloned a human, drama erupts as the debate about his research rages in politics, on the news, and at his front door.

Although all of this is just distracting from the growing problem in his own home stemming from neglected family and the secrets of previous experiments.

Closer To God is a slick looking film that is far more drama than horror, sci-fi, or thriller.

In 1985 Director Robert Zemeckis, Executive Producer Steven Spielberg and Producer/Screenwriter Bob Gale embarked on a three-part journey through time that broke box-office records worldwide and catapulted Back to the Future into one of the most beloved trilogies in motion picture history. In 1989, the filmmakers gave us a glimpse of the future in Back to the Future Part II as Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled to 2015…or, if our calculations are correct, October 21, 2015, to be exact. “The Future” has finally arrived.

KILLING YOUR DARLINGS: How To Let Go Of Your POP CULTURE Fetish

$

By Elizabeth Weitz

The great author William Faulkner once stated, "In writing you must kill your darlings."

In Pop Culture, you should do the same.

I have been a nerd, a dweeb, a dork, a geek all of my life.

Right now, at this point in time, being such is a badge of honor. For those of us old enough to remember the dark ages of dorkdom it wasn’t.

More than anything loving a niche culture (be it D&D, Sci-fi, Comics, Horror Movies, hell, even Geology) was tantamount to social suicide or at the very least, and let’s be honest here, constant humiliation in the form of either ass-kickings or verbal harassment on a weekly basis.

Yet somehow, pop culture has gotten too precious, too preoccupied with its own coolness over the last decade or so that some of us feel that we have to re-establish a geek street cred every time we attend a con panel or read through a review of the newest comic book movie.

How is it that simply living through the beginning era of home game consoles, VCRs and cable TV isn’t enough anymore…that loving what we love isn’t worthy unless we know the minutia of every goddamn thing associated with it?

How is it that I am now getting my metaphorical ass kicked by the very culture that was once the reason it was literally bruised for in the first place?

Seriously, I’d like to know.

THE COMPLETE EIGHTBALL (book review)

Review by Lily Fierro
The Complete Eightball
Written and Illustrated by Daniel Clowes
Published by Fantagraphics
Cover Price: $119.99
ISBN-13: 978-1-60699-757-4
Published: July 4, 2015

Daniel Clowes is a pissy man...but he’s a terrifyingly acute and clever man.

If you opened this review, you most likely know that his acerbic sense of humor and wit and ability to understand people’s sometimes awful inclinations is why you will pick up anything by the acclaimed author of Ghost World.

However, if you’re new to Daniel Clowes’ work, you’re in luck!

This month, Fantagraphics Books released The Complete Eightball, a collection of issues 1-18 of his series Eightball, to showcases his style, his voice, and his many subjects of ire.

The Complete Eightball in total contains nearly 600 pages of insanity and fun, but before I dive in, I should begin with a confession; I’ve never been a huge Clowes fan.

As so many have done, I started off with Ghost World (film and comic) and then Art School Confidential (just the film) as my introduction, and I simply found Clowes’ sense of humor and contempt for people unsettling and heavy-handed, and for some time, I labeled Clowes as an author and artist who I just could not connect with.

Thus, up until I received the opportunity to review The Complete Eightball, I steered clear of Clowes associated publications.

Despite my initial biases, after reading the collection, I realized that the stories of The Complete Eightball represent the heart and soul of independent comics. They’re crude, outrageous, blunt, and strange (signature of the Clowes technique), but ultimately they expose a truth about our own existence and the society we live in today.

And in true independent spirit, some of the comics in the collection succeed and others fail, but the output at least attempts to strive for something different, be it the narrative, the structure, or the characters.

Is There Hope For 'Freemium' Tie-Ins?

$

I hate to use the phrase, "I've had no time to play video games recently" but that's exactly the situation I find myself in...*shock, horror etc.* that's not to say I've abandoned my console entirely because I have had some time to play through a few levels of Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China and ever since the Fallout 4 announcement, I have been managing my own vault in the iOS Fallout Shelter game as a benevolent yet forceful (when she needs to be) Overseer of my very own Vault 221.

Despite getting some play time on these two games, my first sentence remains truthful because I genuinely haven't played a game for more than 20 minutes at a time of late.

Plus, in my opinion an arcade title and a freemium game don't really hold the same weight as say, a heavy story-based first person shooter or a sprawling open world fantasy RPG, despite how you label it. You can call that a four-legged domesticated animal with a tail a dog or a cat (or whatever you like) but only one of those labels will be the correct one.

However, it has brought to light an interesting point. I actually downloaded a freemium game. That's not such a big deal, but those of you who read me regularly will know just how much I despise freemium games.

ANT-MAN (review)

Review by Clay N Ferno
Produced by Kevin Feige
Screenplay by Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish,
Adam McKay, Paul Rudd
Story by Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish
Based on Ant-Man by Stan Lee,
Larry Lieber, Jack Kirby
Directed by Peyton Reed
Starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly,
Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale,
Michael Peña, Tip "T.I." Harris,
Judy Greer, Michael Douglas

Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas star in Marvel’s latest big screen endeavor as Ant-Man.

That is to say that Douglas (as original comic book Avenger Hank Pym) passes the suit on to the younger criminal Scott Lang. Through a series of welcome flashbacks, cameos and ant-eye-view training montages we are given the history of Pym Particles, the mystery of The Wasp’s death and some jokes.

Lost’s Evangeline Lilly stars as Dr. Pym’s daugher Hope van Dyne and plays double insider agent opposite House of Cards actor Corey Stoll as Darren Cross / Yellowjacket. Cross was Pym’s protege and has since taken over Pym’s business.

Other notable cast members are rising stars Michael Peña (The Lincoln Lawyer, Fury, Gracepoint), Bobby Cannavale (Spy, Chef, Boardwalk Empire) alongside actors T.I. — Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr. — and Judy Greer (Married, Arrested Development), who both seem to be having fresh chapters open in their careers.

Ant-Man by design is a more modest movie than Avengers: Age of Ultron or last year’s blockbusters Guardians of the Galaxy and , but it stands as a half rest beat before bringing out the repulsor rays again.

Guest post by John Donaldson

This year's San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone. You may have noticed that with Marvel scaling back its presence compared to its 2014 extravaganza, DC Comics had a golden opportunity to make a big splash with the first good look at its new cinematic universe.

While most fans were happy enough to get new peeks at the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, the overall impression was that the company missed out on a chance to do a lot more.

If you don't want to read some fairly mild spoilers that are pretty much common knowledge by now, you've been warned.

Monster of The Month: TATZELWURM

The Swiss and Austrian Alps might seem like an unlikely location to have an encounter with a strange, stumpy 2-legged giant lizard, but this is exactly the alleged location of the Tatzelwurm (“claw worm”) also known by a variety of other regional names like Stollenwurm (“tunnel worm”) and Bergstutzen (“mountain stump”), according to Cryptozoology A-Z: The Enclopedia of Loch Monsters, Sasquatch, Chupacabras, and Other Authentic Mysteries of Nature by Loren Coleman and Jerome Clark.

The strange lizard, reported to be 2-3 feet long is a classic creature of cryptozoology.

In some Alpine lore, the front end of the animal looks like a cat, with a serpent-like tail.

But it commonly is depicted as a two-legged lizard, dragging along on its body and tail. It was reported in 1779 and again in 1841.
