THE FIGHT FOR CIVILIZATION CONTINUES

For the Ark Survivors on Earth, the alien planet they’ve never known is a mysterious realm – a paradise one moment, lethal the next. Join the stars of this post-apocalyptic drama as they take steps to ensure their futures in the Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (WBHE) release of thrilling The 100: The Complete Second Season on DVD.  Based on the bestselling young adult book by Kass Morgan, and a Top 5 show on The CW with Men 18-49, The 100: The Complete Second Season will feature all 16 episodes and is available to own on October 13, 2015 for $39.98 SRP.

Set almost 100 years after mankind nearly destroyed itself in a nuclear Armageddon, the surviving members of the human race aboard the orbiting “Ark” space station take the first step to recolonize Earth, by sending 100 juvenile delinquents back to the planet’s surface to see if it is habitable.  In the first season, they discovered that the Earth is not quite what they imagined – and that they were not alone.  Survivors from the nuclear apocalypse have broken into dangerous factions including The Grounders, Reapers and Mountain Men.  The first season finale found all of the survivors of the Ark returning to the surface, while The 100 fought for their lives against the Grounders.  In Season Two, our heroes find themselves alternately challenged, supported and betrayed by their own people and alliances with the Grounders, but always manage to reach common ground in survival, as they face off against the lethal forces of Mount Weather, whose civilized environment masks a horrible secret.

Universal Cable Productions (UCP) continues to expand its powerhouse producing talent and build upon the studio’s genre footprint by signing a first-look deal with legendary comic book publisher, Dark Horse Entertainment (“The Mask”, “Hellboy”). The deal announced today will focus on developing and producing scripted programming from their extensive comic book library as well as new material. Discussions for the deal began at Comic Con in 2014 when Dark Horse introduced UCP executives to some of their top writers and artists. Over the last year, those conversations continued and have yielded multiple television projects with direct involvement from the comics creators.

“Dark Horse Entertainment has an incredible roster of fantastical, witty and mind bending stories,” said Dawn Olmstead, Executive Vice President of Development, Universal Cable Productions. “Their brand has conquered multiple media platforms and boasts iconic books that have attracted the highest level of writers. It’s going to be a wild and imaginative ride.”

UCP will collaborate with Dark Horse to bring their unique and fresh approach to the creative process. Together they will maximize Dark Horse’s network of talented comic creators and robust library of content to develop character driven concepts for television intended to resonate with their current fan base. Dark Horse President and founder Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg, SVP of Production, have enjoyed great success for the last two decades; no strangers to television, they also currently executive produce Syfy’s “Dark Matter”.

Each year, fanboys, cosplayers and ne'er-do-wells flock to San Diego to stand in line in the wee hours of the morning, get into shoving matches over aisle space between booths and to pay through the nose for a cheese tortilla outside Ballroom 20 that roughly costs the same as a tank of gas.

Oh, Comic-Con. How I love thee.

However, once the day is gone and the panels have ended, this leaves the question of: what next.

For those of you who are tired of the Hyatt bar or have failed at shmoozing yourself into the EW party, here is a list of fun things you can attend at the Con.

And you thought the fireworks ended on the Fourth of July? In advance of San Diego Comic Con 2015, Dark Horse Comics revealed today a series of major announcements for the strange, shared Mignolaverse of comic books and graphic novels comprised of Hellboy, Abe Sapien, BPRD, Frankenstein Underground, Lobster Johnson and Witchfinder. In a year in which a new dinosaur has been named after Mike Mignola’s most famous creation and Dark Horse Comics has teased that “the impossible will happen” in the Mignolaverse, today’s news brings still more surprises: a new series, a new one-shot special, new high profile collaborators and the departure of a longtime writer.

  • Legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and acclaimed Frankenstein Underground artist Ben Stenbeck will reunite to launch the new series Hellboy and the BPRD: 1953. Starting in October, timed to Halloween, they will release two one shots that follow Hellboy to England for his first-ever ghost hunt. Hellboy is joined by Professor Bruttenholm in the field to fight the phantom hand of a murderer and a demonic water spirit in stories reminiscent of the early Mignola masterpiece The Corpse.

  • Next January, the upcoming Hellboy Winter Special one-shot will include contributions of major, still unannounced comic book artists and will include the first ever Mignolaverse story co-written by Chris Roberson, the co-creator of iZOMBIE. Roberson and Mignola will co-write a 12 page story illustrated by Michael Walsh (Secret Avengers). The following month, Roberson will debut as the ongoing co-writer for Hellboy & The BPRD, with Mignola, working with artist Eisner & Harvey Award winning art team Paolo Rivera (Daredevil) and Joe Rivera.

  • Next year will also see the conclusion of John Arcudi’s acclaimed run on BPRD which started in 2004. His run will conclude with issue 147 when BPRD: HELL ON EARTH concludes.

Dynamite Entertainment is pleased to announce that Jonathan Wayshak will join as the artist of Devolution, the upcoming comic book series written and created by Rick Remender (Black Science, Deadly Class, upcoming Tokyo Ghost). Also, Jordan Boyd will join the creative team as the colorist. A pulp / grindhouse science fiction epic that blends high-octane action, character drama, a world of strange mutations, and social commentary, Devolution is scheduled for release in late 2015.

Rick Remender says, "Jon Wayshak and Jordan Boyd are two of the very best guys working and I'm excited to see them take this old story and give it new life. Jon spends much of his time outside of comic books so I feel very fortunate to have roped him into Devolution, and when you see the first issue, you'll thank me. I wanted to work with Jon since I was first exposed to his madness in an anthology book with Jerome Opeña and Harper Jaten, two of my very favorite art-type people in the world, with whom he shares a stylistic approach. We need Jon. We need his powers to protect us from banal bulls**t that is always attempting to seep in. Jon is a great storyteller, marvelous illustrator, and world-class stylist. His inks and textures are unparalleled. With Jordan doing his usual masterful colors, we have the new superstar art teams in the galaxy of the universe of power and magic and love and d-e-v-o."

Great Scott! As the smoke begins to clear on another magnificent San Diego Comic-Con International, IDW Publishing is OFFICIALLY announcing the next great property to come to comics is none other than Back to the Future! Two days ago, the crowd at IDW’s panel sat stunned as Biff himself arrived, grasping a freshly printed copy of the 2016 trade paperback collection and proclaiming it to be the best-selling book of the year. After traveling to the end of the Con, IDW can now confirm it’s true!

IDW is proud to reveal that with the original movie’s creator/screenwriter Bob Gale on board, the untold adventures are headed Back to (and from) the Future!

“We’ve subtitled this ‘Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines’ because for years, fans have asked questions about things that happened before the events of the trilogy, in between the events of the trilogy, or in our alternate realities,” said Gale. “In this series, we’ll finally answer some of those questions, with our focus squarely on the characters everyone loves.”

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce their agreement with rights holders Galaxy Publishing and Valdoro Entertainment to publish original comic book and graphic novel content for Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, as well as reprints of the character's classic jungle fantasy material. Described by co-creator Will Eisner as a female counterpart to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan, Sheena will see her first adventure at Dynamite Entertainment teaming with the iconic "Lord of the Jungle" himself. Dynamite's rights also include statues, trading cards, action figures, lithographs / fine art, and t-shirts.

"Sheena is one of the first-ever jungle heroines, a hypnotic character who has captured the hearts and imagination of fans throughout the decades," says Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite. "Her long-running series in the 1940s and 1950s established her as a powerful and wild character, a welcome role reversal of traditional jungle action tropes who spent much of her time saving hapless men in distress. We're thrilled to add Sheena to our line, and we are honored that we are able to make her first adventure a historic one which will bring her - for the first time ever - face-to-face with the archetypal jungle hero, Tarzan!"

So Fetch: FOG! Chats With AS IF! AN ORAL HISTORY OF CLUELESS Author Jen Chaney!

Interview conducted by Todd Sokolove

Twenty years ago, Clueless single-handedly revived the teen-comedy genre that had previously been abandoned by Hollywood, and even by John Hughes himself.

Arguably, the genre's second renaissance started with this Emma-inspired instant-classic.

It launched the careers of most of its cast, and marked a return to form for director Amy Heckerling, whose sharp satire also made Fast Times At Ridgemont High a defining comedy a decade earlier.

In stores this week is, As If!, pop-culture columnist Jen Chaney's definitive account of all-things-Clueless. It's an oral history, derived from over 80 interviews, but it's also a celebration of the beloved film (which started initially as a television series, only to later become a television series).

Chaney's also peppered the book with perspective, commenting on why the film continues to connect with fans young and old. She explores everything that influenced the film and in return how the film has influenced its audience.

I caught up with the author on her book tour for some Q & A about the new book, and its own making-of process...
