SHARK WEEK: Seven Shark Attacks This Week is a Reminder It's Safer To Watch at Home

Who knew North Carolina was the new Amity?

In the past week there have been seven shark attacks

According to George Burgess, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research, a number of factors could be contributing to the apparent rash of attacks, such as warmer water and drought conditions, "(which) reduce the amount of freshwater making it to the sea, which creates an environment along the shore where high salt levels attract more fish and sharks. Warmer waters have sharks in North Carolina ahead of schedule, which is a recipe for more attacks."  Burgess also observed that, "people are going to the beach in higher numbers, now that school is out for the summer."

In this writer's opinion, if you live in North Carolina, stay out of the water.

Despite these attacks, this Sunday, July 5th begins the annual tradition of sitting in front of the television for a week, binging on hours and hours of shark documentaries on The Discovery Channel's Shark Week programming.

I also recently checked out some Shark Week DVD collections that are available at the DiscoveryStore.com and highly recommend them.

Dynamite Announces JIM BUTCHER'S THE DRESDEN FILES: DOWN TOWN, The Original In-Continuity Graphic Novel

Dynamite Entertainment is pleased to announce the upcoming September 2015 release of Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files: Down Town hardcover graphic novel, collecting the all-original Dresden Files storyline only ever previously released in a six-issue comic book format. Conceived of by Jim Butcher, co-written by Butcher and Mark Powers (G.I. Joe, Drafted), and illustrated by Carlos Gomez (Deadpool, Pathfinder), the new volume follows upon the success of New York Times bestselling graphic novels The Dresden Files: Ghoul Goblin and The Dresden Files: War Cry. The upcoming release in the official, in-continuity Dresden Files graphic novel series tells the story of titular wizard Harry Dresden's mystical confrontation with Chicago mobsters.

"This was a fun project, because we got to play with a Dresden that was much closer to the character as he exists in the most recent books," says Jim Butcher, acclaimed creator of the Dresden Files series and plotter for the Down Town storyline. "We got to see both Mouse and Molly in action, to show Marcone demonstrating why he's the Baron of Chicago, and to pit Dresden against an archetypical foe of the Wardens of the White Council, a power-maddened warlock. We get to go on an adventure in Undertown, the Stygian labyrinth beneath Chicago, and in general have all the monsters, adventure, and uneasy alliances that are what the readers of The Dresden Files have come to expect from the stories."

IMAGE EXPO Wrap-Up: "We Make Comics Not Movies"

By Steven Scott

Time flies! I attended Image Expo for the second time this year and although the last one was at the start of the year, it still feels just as fresh in my mind as the latest one. It’s as if, in my mind, Image Expo never ended and we just picked up right where we left off.

Once again, the event kicked off with the Keynote Address, once again given by Eric Stephenson. He focused less on Image’s growing success in the market (no graphs or pie charts on display this time) and instead hammered home the point that Image owns nothing, and that Image creators are in control of their own destinies.

We’ve heard this all before, but it’s still a cool reminder that Image is so dedicated to the creators who choose to work with them, and as the line up this year showed, Image is more than capable of wooing the biggest A-list talent in all of comics.

Stephenson went on to say that comics existed for more than 40 years before creator owned comics became a thing, so while the guys who founded Image didn’t create fire, they’ve been stoking the flames for the past 20 years. I have to agree.

Dynamite proudly announces that fan-favorite author Warren Ellis will be writing the James Bond 007 ongoing comic book series, the first to appear in over two decades. James Bond 007 is scheduled for release in November 2015, featuring interior artwork by Jason Masters (Batman Incorporated, Guardians of the Galaxy).

The news of the high-profile author's involvement with the James Bond 007 series follows Dynamite's announcement of their partnership with Ian Fleming Publications Ltd. (IFPL), the Fleming-family company that owns and administers the literary copyright of Ian Fleming's published works, including his fourteen James Bond books. Under their agreement, Dynamite has been granted worldwide rights to publish comic books, digital comics, and graphic novels starring 007. Launching their James Bond 007 line with a writer of exemplary skill and reputation has been a priority for Dynamite, and Warren Ellis' stewardship will guarantee a debut story with all the hallmarks of high-octane action and international intrigue that exemplify the franchise.

"Ian Fleming's James Bond is an icon, and it's a delight to tell visual narratives with the original, brutal, damaged Bond of the books," says Warren Ellis.

The first six-issue story arc in the James Bond 007 comic book series will be entitled "VARGR." James Bond returns to London after a mission of vengeance in Helsinki, to take up the workload of a fallen 00 agent... but something evil is moving through the back streets of the city, and sinister plans are being laid for Bond in Berlin.

By Stefan Blitz

Here at FOG! HQ lots of cool stuff comes in, giving us the opportunity to check out some merchandise.  Here's our thoughts on some of the latest stuff that's passed through our rigorous testing.

Doctor Strange Mystic Arts T-Shirt

A few years from now the only Doctor Strange shirts you're going be able to find will have the British mug of Benedict Cumberbatch wearing a Cloak of Levitation and rocking the Eye of Agamotto.

Fortunately, it's not too late to get this amazing shirt featuring the Sorcerer Supreme fighting off Hoary Hordes of Hoggoth.

With art (I think) by the iconic Frank Brunner, the Master of The Mystic Arts is poised to save us from whatever threats lurk in the multi-dimensional astral planes.

This shirt comes in 100% cotton and is simply Marvelous (see what I did there?)

Lost In Space Electronic Lights & Sounds B9 Robot

One of the most recognizable robots in pop culture, Lost in Space's B9 Robot aka Robot has arrived from DST in an electronic robot edition.

Standing 10" tall, it's a near perfect replica of the television icon and features working blinking lights on it's chest and head and additional lights and sound clips are activated with the press of a button.  Wheels on the bottom of the base allow the robot to be rolled around.

Featuring voice clips from the voice of Dick Tufeld, Robot says the following phrases: "I will accompany you, you may need protection," "Cannot compute, programming data insufficient," and it's catchphrase, "Danger! Danger!"

His head can be manually raised and lowered, his claws can be open and closed and turn his torso from side to side.

A must have for any pop culture connoisseur.

Launch Titles Include The Curse of The Wendigo by Walking Dead Artist Charlie Adlard and Writer Mathieu Missoffe & Come Prima by Alfred, the Winner of the Prix du Meilleur Album at the 2014 Angoulême International Comics Festival

More Than 150 Delcourt Group Titles To Be Released Exclusively by ComiXology

Delcourt Group, the leading independent comic book publisher in France, took a big step in their global expansion today with the debut of an exclusive line of English language digital-first comics on comiXology, the revolutionary cloud-based digital comics platform. This major publishing program premieres this month with three of the bestselling titles published in France, including The Curse of the Wendigo, which was illustrated by artist Charlie Adlard, best known for his collaboration with Robert Kirkman on The Walking Dead, and Come Prima by Alfred, the graphic novel which won the Prix du Meilleur Album at the 2014 Angoulême International Comics Festival. Announced in advance of San Diego Comic Con 2015, the initiative calls for more than 150 acclaimed Delcourt titles to be published over the next 12 months exclusively through comiXology.

“The French comic market is one of the most diverse in the world, and it’s fantastic to be a part of this game-changing deal with Delcourt,” said co-founder and CEO of comiXology David Steinberger. “The English language audience is more diverse than ever and Delcourt’s compelling titles will speak to comiXology fans. It’s high time that French comics take their rightful place as a major comics category – today marks the beginning of the ‘French Invasion’ of comics in the English language market!”

This digital-first exclusive marks the first time that Delcourt will be making its content directly available to the English language market. The Delcourt Group comprises three publishing entities - Editions Delcourt, Editions Soleil and Tonkam – making the company the largest independent graphic novel publisher in France and the second largest in France by market share. With this deal, comiXology further cements its role as the leading digital comics platform, offering the widest selection of digital comics in the world with over 75,000 comics, graphic novels and manga from more than 75 publishers.

“France has one of the most vibrant markets for comic books and graphic novels in the world, comparable in size to the U.S. market,” said Delcourt founder Guy Delcourt. “In France, we may call graphic novels ‘bandes dessinées’ but the diverse stories we publish deliver the kind of action, intrigue and personal drama that American readers are accustomed to reading.”

Some of the Delcourt titles will also include original material from major comic book creators, with new covers by Andrea Sorentino, Matteo Scalera and Mahmud Asrar and introductions by legendary U.S. creators Mark Waid, Jeff Smith and Terry Moore.

“I love bandes dessinées, probably more than my own home-grown comics industry,” said The Curse of the Wendigo artist Charlie Adlard. “It was a great honour and a privilege to work on this book, which has everything I want in a story: a great setting and mood and intriguing characters. I really wanted to up my game on the book, too ,because this is French comic books – the quality speaks for itself.”

ComiXology and Delcourt Group have a long history of working together. In January of 2013, Delcourt was one of the initial publishers to launch French language content on the comiXology platform – the first step in comiXology’s European language initiative.

"I've long been impressed with Delcourt's publishing slate, and I'm excited for what they're bringing to comiXology,” said Thrillbent co-founder and Insufferable co-creator, Mark Waid. “It's a smart pairing of a digital forerunner and a savvy publisher.”

ASSHOLES Inspired by Peter Straub's SHADOWLAND: Guest Post By Sam Munson

Almost two years ago, news bubbled up that David S. Goyer -- the man who wrote stories and screenplays for Blade, The Dark Knight, Jumper, and a film of Robert Heinlein’s The Puppet Masters, among many, many others -- would be adapting an obscure, thirty-year-old novel by horror master Peter Straub as a limited TV series.

The news -- though it hasn’t been followed up with anything substantive, yet, and believe me, I check every day -- made me happier than any development news in a long time. Straub, though perennially praised, still doesn’t get the kind of critical attention he deserves. And though he has since produced more mature books,Shadowland remains my favorite of his – and a direct inspiration for my own second novel, The War Against The Assholes.

What is Shadowland?

It is a book about art, love, lust, death, excellence, and failure, and the hideous cost simply surviving exacts from all of us.

‘ASIAN PULP’ Debuts From Pro Se Productions

$

In April 2013, Pro Se Productions released Black Pulp, a collection of stories written in classic pulp genres featuring lead characters of African descent.  Not only were readers captivated by the cast of characters featured in the book, they also saw the potential of future volumes, both of Black Pulp, and collections featuring other ethnicities in much the same way. Pro Se Productions proudly announces the release of Asian Pulp, featuring seventeen of today’s best authors, in both print and digital format.

Leonard Chang, novelist and writer and co-producer of the TV crime drama Justified, states in his introduction to Asian Pulp, “The world of pulp fiction was a world that I understood—it was a reaction to trauma, both as art and as catharsis. Personal trauma. Emotional trauma. Physical trauma. National trauma. This is why I responded to it, why I immersed myself in it. And why, whenever I was in a personal and artistic crisis, it saved me. Fiction is a reflection of and commentary on life, and I needed to find a reflection of and commentary on my life.

That there weren't any Asian Americans in the pulp I was reading wasn't a problem (or if there were Asians they tended to be dismissible stereotypes) -- no, not a problem at all, but actually an opportunity. I've always viewed writing as providing myself with more reading material. I write what I can't find out there. Why not have a Korean American act as a private eye, and infuse in his character all the traits I wanted to see but haven't? Why not write about Korean American gangsters, criminals, and detectives? And this is where we, as writers, all began moving toward: writing about people we want to see on the page, in lives and stories that speak to us.”

Following in the tradition of the best selling Black Pulp, from Today's Best Authors and up and coming writers comes Asian Pulp from Pro Se Productions! A collection of stories featuring characters of Asian origin or descent in stories that run the gamut of genre fiction!

Asian Pulp includes works from Don Lee, Naomi Hirahara, Kimberly Richardson, Percival Constantine, William F. Wu, Gary Phillips, Calvin McMillin, Mark Finn, Dale Furutani, Steph Cha, Henry Chang, Sean Taylor, Gigi Pandian, Louise Herring-Jones, Alan J. Porter, and David C. Smith. The anthology opens with an introduction from Leonard Chang.

GARTH ENNIS Gets Romantic in A TRAIN CALLED LOVE From Dynamite Entertainment

Dynamite Entertainment is pleased to announce that fan-favorite writer Garth Ennis will launch a brand new creator-owned series, A Train Called Love, this coming October. A volatile comic book exploration of romance as only Garth Ennis can deliver, A Train Called Love will feature Mark Dos Santos (Grimm Fairy Tales, Cthulhu Tales) as regular artist and Russ Braun (The Boys, Fables) on cover duties.

"A Train Called Love is a story I've been wanting to tell for some time, largely because people keep asking me about doing a romance comic and the idea just wouldn't go away," says Garth Ennis. "This is what I came up with: guns, gangsters, mayhem, big white hoods, dubious films with horses, mad Germans, obscene phone calls, crazy ladies, total losers, hot chicks, dishy guys, movie stars, lots of narcotics, terrible bands from Williamsburg, taxidermy, incontinence, unrequited crushes, a big fluffy white rabbit and a rather unpleasant scene involving an escalator. Thus shall I explore the highs and lows of love."

The first issue of A Train Called Love introduces Valerie, a woman who has been getting dirty phone calls and wants revenge... and in its pursuit, she meets Myles, the man of her dreams. However, Myles has been targeted by Emil and Gustav, two mentally unstable guns-for-hire. Meanwhile, the budding romance gets more complicated as the rest of the cast is introduced: Valerie's sister Penny, her friend friend Marcy (who's chasing her musical dreams), a handful of shady characters with a dubious scheme to get rich, and a certain organisation with a lot of Ks in its name. And then there's Mister Fluffy...
