INFOGRAPHIC - The Evolution of the Mobile Gamer

$
0
0

The mobile gamer has changed a lot throughout the short history of mobiles. From the avid Snake player on ye olde Nokia 3310 through to the dedicated MMORPG mobile gamer using their smartphone, the development of the mobile gamer is quite a journey to behold. Play along at home and discover evolutionary stages to rival any Darwinian theory.

The Humble Snake Player

The obsessive Snake player had many qualities. His thumbs were fast, his attention was focused. He was probably 13, using his dad’s phone and feeling like the King of Cool just holding it.
While Nokia’s Snake wasn’t the first mobile phone game (the Hagenuk-2000 had a version of Tetris on it back in 1994), it was certainly the first to penetrate a large market.

The Java Junkie

In the early 2000s, the first phones supporting Java were released. This was a big deal. The first gamers to appreciate the comparative versatility of Java games were the teenagers of the era (isn’t that always the way?). They were only slightly put off by the lack of handsets that supported both Java and colour technology – after all, you can’t have everything, right? ‘Real’ gamers who still favoured consoles and dedicated portable gaming devices over shoddy mobile devices still looked down their noses at the mobile gaming phenomenon – it was a novelty for kids and old people.

The Radical Racer

Do the words ‘Beach Rally’ mean anything to you? If the answer is yes, you were probably a radical racer. Part of the awkward teenage phase of mobile gaming, the racing enthusiast was one of the first to enjoy the action and drama mobile gaming could offer. By this time, colour screens (and some 3D) were in and street cred for playing games on your phone was slowly on the rise.

The Early Smartphone Gamer

Hipsters, rejoice! Your time has come. The first-gen iPhone gamer was wearing skinny jeans and listening to obscure bands for all his 4 or 8GB model was worth. While the app store wasn’t around at the very beginning, once it was up and running, they were slowly downloading for all they were worth.

The Contemporary Gamer

Today, the mobile gamer has many faces. From Grandma playing Words with Friends to the two-year-old kid playing an interactive Dora the Explorer game, technology has expanded to the point that mobile gaming is for everyone. Mobile apps make downloading cheap, quick and easy and an entire industry has sprung up around it.

And that’s where our journey has taken us so far. The mobile phone evolved from being the ‘poor man’s Gameboy’ to overtaking consoles in overall market value as advancements in technology expanded the audience. Mobile gamers changed quickly from teenagers wanting to show off how cool their case was to a varied group of consumers with a wide range of tastes. This was largely thanks to an interface that allowed niche developers to directly reach their market, something that was difficult to do in the past due to the prohibitive costs of developing and marketing a game on a traditional console.

What will the mobile gamer look like a decade – or even a couple of years – from now? It’s impossible to say, but they certainly won’t be going extinct anytime soon.

Check out some cool mind-boggling stats about some of the hottest Mobile Games

A Blast From the Past - Remembering Maggott, the Accidental X-Man

$

Let’s face it.

The X-Men have had some pretty odd members over the years, even by their standards. Some were pretty cool like Gambit and Bishop and Psylocke. Others? Well, others were pretty damn useless. Like Stacy X, the prostitute mutant with a heart of crap who quickly became the most obnoxious character Joe Casey created during his tenure on Uncanny X-Men in the early double-aughts.

Seriously. I pretty much cringed every time she was given anything to do or say, especially after Chuck Austen managed to make her even more grating, as he is wont to do with everything he writes.

Yep, that’s some sparkling writing right there…

But there was one mutant in particular that kind of fell in between the two extremes that for some reason I took a shine to and that’s Maggott.

Yeah. Not the best name, and spelled incorrectly because, comics, but he had a cool mystery around him for a bit and a very unique mutant ability.

“Daddy needs you to step away from the apex predator,” Dr. Dixon nervously says to his 12 year old daughter, Amber, as she accidentally awakens a living and breathing dinosaur from a 64 million year cryosleep, and brilliantly and humorously sets the tone for this fast paced intergalactic tale of survival.

If you look at the cover, you see a little girl with an orange T-Rex who is wearing body armor and ready to attack the enemy.

“Maybe this is a comedy, a parody that is only meant to deliver a good laugh,” I thought as I judged this cover. Not that there is nothing wrong with a parody. James Farr and Jon Sommariva take what we know about these historical beasts and flip it upside down.

However, once you immerse yourself into these colorful pages, it becomes evident in a short amount of time that Rexodus delivers so much more that it’s perceived intent.

Changing what we know about history, and our place in the universe, had been done before. So, if I were to tell you that dinosaurs could walk and talk, you wouldn’t be so surprised.

Summertime is the best time to catch up on reading! One of the classic comic characters I have always wanted to know more about, since seeing his 1991 film was The Rocketeer.

The pulp hero, inspired by art deco design and the creations of Howard Hughes (see The Aviator) was the titular work of Dave Stevens, a cartoonist and storyboard artist that passed away in 2008.

IDW released an accessible paperback volume of our hood ornament of a hero with The Rocketeer The Complete Adventures in association with the Stevens Estate. The publisher and Stevens before his death tapped the talented Laura Martin to remaster the colors for the hardcover edition.

This book is the best independent comics has to offer, a legendarily rare creation with extraordinary art and dogfight action.

The Rocketeer wasn’t created in the time of the pulps, but instead captures the spirit of that high-flying time in American history with Cliff Secord,  The Rocketeer and his sometime pin-up gal pal Betty.

Archie's Betty (Review)

Review by Elizabeth Weitz
Produced by Gerald Peary, Shaun Clancy,
 Ellen Poss, David Reeder
Written and Directed by Gerald Peary

For a vast majority of comic fans, one of their first introductions to the medium were the adventures of Archie Andrews and his life in Riverdale.

Sure, the comic wasn’t as exciting as say, Superman or Batman, but there was something sweet about Archie and his band of friends (and frenemies) that made you return to the story time and time again…even if you wouldn’t openly admit it lest you were branded a sentimental fool.

In Gerald Peary’s sweet documentary, Archie’s Betty, the simple and idealized life of Riverdale (which, surprisingly, has managed to survive a society as cynical as ours over the decades) is explored in the form of a quest to see if the characters in the comic were based on the real life people that Archie creator Bob Montana knew during his formative years.

This quest turns out to be a race against time to sort out answers from the elderly possible contenders, many of whom are in their 80s and 90s.

Tonight, the new season of Rookie Blue ABC-TV’s fan favorite cop drama, returns at 10pm ET/9pm CT.

And tomorrow, Entertainment One (eOne) – also a Rookie Blue producer – will begin to release each episode for purchase on all leading digital platforms the day after their premieres.

Five years ago, a group of green rookies fresh out of the Academy started their careers with 15 Division -- one of the most elite units in the city. Now, as Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym) and her fellow officers enter their next year as seasoned pros, more resilient than ever, each day continues to bring new surprises and revelations.

Last season the officers at 15 Division unearthed their sins of the past - dug through them, aired them out, and paved the way to move forward, though it ended with two bombs being dropped: an actual explosion in the evidence room, and the revelation that Sam (Ben Bass)'s ex-girlfriend Marlo (Rachael Ancheril) is pregnant with Sam’s baby. This upcoming season of Rookie Blue promises to take the raucous rollercoaster ride of 15 Division to new heights with nail-biting storylines and a heavy dose of romance and heartbreak. And it’s during this season, that they’ll have to learn to embrace living in the gray areas, because life is complicated and the best laid plans are just that. But sometimes it's the unpredictable things life throws our way that turn out to be exactly what we need.

Returning cast members include Gregory Smith, Travis Milne, Enuka Okuma, Charlotte Sullivan, Peter Mooney and Priscilla Faia. Season Six also co-stars Oliver Becker and Matthew Owen Murray.

And thanks to our friends at Entertainment One, we're giving away three $10.00 iTunes gift cards so you can check out the new season of Rookie Blue for yourself!
