Thoughts On The Video Game Hall Of Fame

Back in April, the National Museum Of Play in New York, also known as The Strong announced that it was putting together a World Video Game Hall Of Fame because everything else has a Hall Of Fame and rightly so, video games should be no exception.

That and we all enjoy a good list, right?

Earlier this month, the first inductees to receive a place in this exclusive list were announced and for those who don't already know, the winners were

  • World of Warcraft
  • Tetris
  • Pac-Man
  • Pong
  • Doom
  • Super Mario Bros.

Image credit: The Strong National Museum Of Play

You may not have played or even like some of these games, you probably disagree with one or two or believe another game to be more worthy.

Though, I think many of us would agree that it's a pretty solid list because each title, whether you like it or not, has affected the games industry monumentally or furthered the idea of what is and can be considered a video game.

Don't believe me or agree?

That's fine, but let me explain why I think each of these six titles deserves their place into the inaugural class of the 'World Video Game Hall Of Fame' because obviously my opinion counts more than yours because...shut up, this is the Internet.

THE TOP CARTOONS OF 1949

We've reached the end of the 1940s, and we're nearing the close of this series as well… at least for a while. But do not despair, as there are plenty of great 1949 cartoons to tide you over. This was absolutely a top-shelf year for animation, overflowing with classics from the likes of Warner Bros. and MGM. I had to work hard to get it down to ten.

This was the year that Disney released The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, the last of the package features (the studio returned to full-length stories with Cinderella in 1950). Speaking of endings, Columbia released the last of the Charles Mintz/Screen Gems films this year (Coo-Coo Bird Dog, Grape Nutty, Cat-Tastrophy) and Walter Lantz released their last few films before a brief shutdown (the studio returned in 1951). And over at Warner Bros., Arthur Davis was retired as a director (after crafting some exceptional films like What Makes Daffy Duck and Bowery Bugs), leaving Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng and Robert McKimson as the staff directors throughout the 1950s.

But there were also some new beginnings. Chuck Jones dreamed up Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner for his film Fast and Furry-ous, and UPA launched the nearsighted Mr. Magoo in Ragtime Bear. Over at MGM, the cartoon Wags to Riches introduced a bulldog named Spike, who would serve as an adversary to Tex Avery’s Droopy character. Confusingly, MGM had a different bulldog named Spike who had been appearing in Tom & Jerry cartoons since 1942’s Dog Trouble, but 1949’s Love That Pup was the first to introduce his son Tyke, who he would appear with regularly.

On this list, you’ll find quite a bit from Warner Bros. and MGM, along with a short from UPA and an abstract piece. Take a look:

Z2 Comics, the boutique graphic novel publisher of acclaimed graphic novels by Paul Pope, Harvey Pekar, Dean Haspiel and Miss Lasko-Gross, announced today a new line of creator owned periodical comic books.

The New York-based company will launch its periodical line in the fall of 2015 with three dynamic titles: the first creator owned comic book by BRAVEST WARRIORS comic book artist Ian McGinty, an international adventure caper by Paul Pope’s protege Chris Hunt, and the comic book debut by Last Week Tonight with John Oliver writer Will Tracy and co-writer Gabe Koplowitz. All Z2 Comics standard periodicals will be 32 pages and priced at $3.99; they will be distributed at comic book stores nationwide via Diamond and will be available digitally via ComiXology.

“There’s no house style to Z2 Comics, because our comics are spectacularly diverse,” said Z2 Comics Publisher Josh Frankel. “We have an all ages comic book chock full of demons and monsters about the eternal tension between a slacker son and his ambitious father who literally wants to take over the universe. There’s a world trotting caper full of sex, intrigue and adventure. And then there’s a hilarious fantasy story about an aspiring cartoonist who must avenge his father’s death.”

“Z2 Comics are wildly eclectic,” said Frankel. “What does a graphic novel from Paul Pope, Dean Haspiel or Miss Lasko Gross have in common with the periodicals announced today? They are exceptional works from exceptional creators and comics you’ll want to read.”

Story by Pete Docter, Ronnie del Carmen
Directed by Pete Docter
Starring Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Bill Hader,
Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Kaitlyn Dias,
Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, Richard Kind

I have to say, I think Inside Out is the most innovative film that Pixar has created yet.

Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

They've gone inside the brain of eleven-year-old, Riley, a spunky girl who loves hockey, friends, and being a goofball with her parents.

Up in her head, known as "Headquarters", there live little characters who represent her emotions: Joy (Amy Poehler couldn't be a more perfect voice for the effervescent character) Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Anger (Lewis Black) and Fear (Bill Hader).

From birth, they take turns monitoring and influencing her experiences and memories.

As a young child Riley is predominantly filled with Joy--who is the leader of all the emotions. She's always bubbly, always trying to see the bright side of life and successfully keeps Riley's happiness ever-present.

That is, until Riley and her parents move from Minnesota to San Francisco.

Written by Alan Trezza
Directed by Joe Dante
Starring Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene,
Alexandra Daddario, Oliver Cooper

Filmmaker and cinegeek royalty director Joe Dante (Gremlins, Innerspace, The Howling) disappoints in this derivative and disappointing entry into the already overcrowded zombie genre.

Anton Yelchin plays Max, a horror geek with dreams of opening his own horror themed store.  He's dating the overbearing and possessive Evelyn, played Ashley Greene.

A convenient devil wish doll ensures that Max and Evelyn will be together forever, that is until Evelyn is hit and killed by a bus, freeing Max from the albatross and opening the way for him to date Olivia, owner of the horror themed ice cream shop, "I Scream".

And then, Evelyn comes back as a zombie and expects Max to be with her forever (and ever).

Which is exactly what the running time of this film felt like.

Eye Am The Danger

Last week, I suffered a pretty serious eye injury. The kind that has you rushed to a cornea specialist and given a small arsenal of specially made antibiotics to take every hour on the hour for… well, no one knows how long.

Still, despite effectively going blind in one eye, there was one, single silver lining; I got to wear an eye-patch, and as every comic reader knows, eye-patches are the exclusive domain of the baddest of bad asses.

I'd like to discuss the Forces of Geek Initiative...

In fact, growing up reading comics, you get the distinct impression that you’re not really anything even approaching tough until you lose the use of one eye.

Sure, sure, most super heroes (and villains) have full use of both of their eyes, but we all kind of know that when it comes to awesome, their more binary colleagues hold the most rank.

PACHINKO Creates Japan's Gambling Problem

As you are well aware gambling is very mainstream in the UK and it is very common place to see adverts on the TV for poker, super casino and various bingo sites to name but a few. The most popular game in the UK is bingo and millions of Brits play bingo sites on a daily basis. You probably haven’t considered that gambling overseas is becoming a problem as different cultures seem to be fond of all different sorts of gambling.

If you have been to Japan, you are probably well aware of the noises, hustle and bustle that usually come from any main street you walk down. These noises come from the popular Pachinko machines which look like upside down pinball machines with tiny pulling levers which release tiny silver pellets. The silver pellets are exchanged for gifts and the Japanese simply cannot get enough!

Why E. L. James’ ‘Grey’ Will Usher In the Era of Lazy Writing

By Elizabeth Weitz

Yesterday E.L. James released the follow up to her successful trilogy of Mom Porn titled Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian which, in one day, is already sitting in the #1 bestseller position on the various lists that judge these sorts of things. And while I wasn’t a fan of the tepid tale of an emotionally stunted man-child who horribly misunderstood the many tiers of the BDSM lifestyle and the incredibly naïve college student whose inner dialog could be mistaken for someone coming out of a coma and is in need of some serious Occupational therapy, good for her for tapping into a market of readers who had obviously bought into the socially inflated suburban dream and found the landscape wanting.

My main issue with James however (and trust me, there are many) is that this newest offering is nothing more than a sophomoric attempt to slide past the gilded moment of the second novel and shit on it (yes, I understand that the original story is a trilogy but let’s be honest here, it was fan fiction edited down to three bite-size pieces in order to better stomach it).

THE TREATMENT aka DE BEHANDELING (DVD review)

Produced by Peter Bouckaert
Screenplay by Carl Joos
Based on the book by Mo Hayder
Directed by Hans Herbots
Starring Geert Van Rampelberg, Ina Geerts, Johan van Assche,
Laura Verlinden, Dominique Van Malder, Roel Swanenberg,
Kyan Steverlynck, Ingrid De Vos, Michael Vergauwen
Released by Artsploitation Films / 7/7/15

The Pitch:The Treatment is an unsettling Belgian murder mystery that gets under your skin and stays there. A nail-biting suspense yarn based on one of a series of best-selling novels by British crime writer Mo Hayder, the film is not an old-fashioned Agatha Christie-type whodunit, but its gritty themes of sexual violence and pedophilia give it a raw, contemporary intensity that places it in the same company as the “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” book and film series.

Police inspector Nick Cafmeyer is investigating a case where a mother and father have been bound and beaten, and their young son is missing. An obsessive loner, Cafmeyer discovers that there are other similar cases – tragedies where the parents were forced by a psychopath to harm their own children, who then vanish. For the inspector, this triggers memories of his own brother’s abduction as a child, and the possibility that he may still be alive somewhere. Grim and wholly engrossing, The Treatment is a thriller with an edge. Extras include premiere featurette, deleted scenes and trailer.

Last Word: The last time I was uncomfortable in a movie about missing kids (which is sort of a niche I guess) I was watching Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) torture accused child killer Paul Dano in Prisoners. But that was nothing compared to the gut wrenching Belgian thriller The Treatment and the tour de force performance of Geert Van Rampelberg (The Broken Circle Breakdown) as Belgian Police Inspector Nick Cafmeyer, who is investigating the case of a missing child whose bound and beaten parents were forced by a crazed psychopath to harm their own offspring before vanishing into the ether with their kid.

The third season of Orange is the New Black was released on Netflix a day early, giving fans of the show the opportunity to binge watch the entire new season over the weekend.

Season three took an interesting turn for the ladies of Jenji Kohan-created show continue to grow into fully-realized characters, it becomes clear that nothing is black or white (or orange) in Litchfield Penitentiary, but a muted shade of gray.

SPOILERS

While Piper Chapman took a backseat to a fewer of the colorful characters last season, this year she is front and center, and looking a little less wide eyed and innocent.

While previous years had the WASPy blonde play with her status as a “victim” of her circumstances, this year, Chapman is in complete control. And being a bit of a bitch about it.

At the end of last season, Chapman framed her on-again, off-again girlfriend Alex Vause by sabotaging her parole and sending her back to the cell block and into her awaiting arms. This year, Chapman’s moral compass continues to waiver as the upbeat former drug mule decides to try her hand at the front-end of the smuggling business as the prison inmates are used for cheap slave labor in the fancy undergarment industry.

Discovering an online market for used panties, Chapman uses her fellow inmates, guards and family to create a stank undies empire.

Along the way, she loses her love for Alex, as well as a small part of her humanity, as she goes on a power trip.

But Chapman isn’t the only character who can no longer fit neatly in a “good” or “bad” category.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

20th Century Fox / Released 6/9/15

A super-secret organization recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training program just as a dire global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. A phenomenal cast, including Academy Award Winners Colin Firth and Michael Caine and Oscar Nominee Samuel L. Jackson, leads this action-packed spy-thriller directed by Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class). Extras include featurettes and image galleries.

Last Word: The spy movie genre of late has gotten pretty grim. From the gritted teeth of Jason Bourne or 007 to the polite office politics of George Smiley to revenge obsessed Bryan Mills, being a secret agent doesn't seem like much fun. Unless, you're a Kingsman.

In one of cinema's most unique partnerships, comic book writer Mark Millar has teamed up with director Matthew Vaughn and screenwriter Jane Goldman for the second time to adapt one of Millar's properties to the silver screen.

The first collaboration, 2010's Kick-Ass, pondered what being a superhero would be like for the average teenager in the real world.  Now the attention has turned to gentlemen spy. Scottish Millar is a bit of a P.T. Barnum of comics, playing the press with exaggerated hints of news.  But there's a catch; He delivers.

So far several films based on his material have been released including Wanted, Kick-Ass 1 & 2, and Kingsman with upcoming projects including Nemesis to be directed by Joe Carnahan, Supercrooks with director Nacho Vigalando and Superior, potentially again with Vaughn.  His work on the Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four titles both heavily influenced the film versions and the rumor is that the third Wolverine film will be based on his Old Man Logan storyline.

What makes the partnership with Goldman and Vaughn interesting however is that they are often active on the screenplay while the comic is still being written, allowing for a unique collaboration and sometime cross-influence. As for an adaptation, there are some major changes in characters and motivation, but the all of the big strokes are there in the comic.  Rereading the comic after seeing the film, I honestly think that that Vaughn and Goldman knocked it out of the park.

Kingsman: The Secret Service is terrifically entertaining. Vaughn has made the most fun James Bond film that we've seen since the early Roger Moore films; including all of the key elements, gorgeous women, gadgets, a maniacal villain poised to take over the world, terrific humor, an over the top sidekick for the bad guy and huge action set pieces. Taron Egerton plays Eggsy, the latest potential recruit for The Kingsman, a secret spy society led by Michael Caine.  He's nominated by Colin Firth, who feels responsible for the death of Egsy's father, a Kingsman killed on his watch over a decade prior.  Samuel L. Jackson is the lisping Tommy Hilfiger styled Richmond Valentine, a tech billionaire with plans to reimagine the world with the use of a deadly phone app.

The cast overall is phenomenal.  Firth takes on the role of action hero with poise, grace and charm and Egerton is charming and holds his own against the ensemble of established stars (a group he's likely to join very soon). The script is crisp and keeps the action moving quickly and Vaughn impeccably balances the absurd with humor and tension.  Kingsman is a very violent, very dark humored homage to the spy genre. Bring on the sequel.

The DUFF

Lionsgate / Released 6/9/15

Bianca's (Mae Whitman) universe turns upside down when she learns that her high school refers to her as a 'DUFF' (Designated Ugly Fat Friend). Hoping to erase that label, she enlists the help of a charming jock (Robbie Amell) and her favorite teacher (Ken Jeong). Together they'll face the school's mean girl (Bella Thorne) and remind everyone that we are all someone's DUFF... and that's totally fine. Extras include featurettes and extended gag reel.

Last Word: Mae Whitman's talents are on full display in The DUFF, an entertaining, albeit familiar teen film that owes more to Pygmalion, than the John Hughes oevure.  The screenplay by Josh A. Cagan is predictable and servicable, but the ensemble, especially Whitman and co-star Amell elevate the material.  Also, the film's adult cast (Allison Janey, Ken Jeong and Romany Malco) anchors the film with a sense of levity and honesty.  The DUFF is a very entertaining teen comedy that is certain to appeal to viewers of all ages.  Recommended.

Focus

Warner Bros. / Released 6/2/15

Nicky (Will Smith) is a seasoned master of misdirection who becomes involved with novice con artist Jess (Margot Robbie). As he's teaching her the tricks of the trade, she gets too close for comfort, and he breaks it off. Three years later, Jess - now an accomplished femme fatale - shows up in Buenos Aires during the high-stakes race-car circuit, throwing Nicky off his game in the middle of his latest dangerous scheme. Extras include featurettes, deleted scenes and alternate opening.

Last Word: A sexy and mysterious conman takes on a gorgeous young woman as his intern. Formulaic shenanigans ensue. That’s Focus. As far as con artist films go, this one is satisfactory, but only just so. My qualms: The movie is overall fun and dapper in the moment, but I found it immediately forgettable upon completion. Characters and plot are thin and formulaic. Expository scenes of con-life and rules all play out by the end of the film. The twists and turns turn and twist but we all know the outcome before it happens.

I wasn’t convinced of any chemistry between Nicky (Will Smith) and Jess (Margot Robbie) either. It often looks as though they are about to break character and start giggling. Their back-stories are alluded to, but never expanded upon. Robbie’s character reaches for some depth initially by blurting out, “I’m a dyslexic foster kid.” It’s an awkward throw away line and her past is non-existent from that point on. I was also distracted by Smith’s voice – he’s got the Matthew McConaughey slow, rasp mumbling thing going on. Just makes him look tired. In contrast, Robbie is very energetic, occasionally shrill even. Her eyes are always filled with wonder, and she’s always shocked and amused and squealing when her co-star pulls one over her head. It’s cute. But it gets boring.

Supporting characters are fairly bland as well. The goofy sidekick gets some laughs, the hot bad guy smiles and slithers and gets angry. B.D. Wong makes an odd appearance. And he’s great, but that’s it. He was there and then he wasn’t. Directors/writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa give us several scenes of witty banter, which are enjoyable, but not too clever. It’s disappointing in fact, because their script for Crazy Stupid Love was so hilarious and smart.

You’ll obviously laugh during Focus because Will Smith is Will Smith and he has great timing, charm, and delivery, but I expected more from the directors, especially since they put the film together so seamlessly. Focus is very aesthetically pleasing, rich with impeccable wardrobes, exquisitely fancy hotels, luxury cars, and gorgeous birds-eye views of New York City, New Orleans and Buenos Aires. The colors are vibrant, and the camera work is simultaneously seductive and exciting. Of course, as tribute to the film’s title, the shots tend to go in and out of focus at the beginning and end of most scenes. And while it may get repetitive, it works.  Know that the movie is exactly what you’re expecting it be: a bunch of really attractive people stealing from the masses and are never even slightly remorseful about it. 7 MINUTES (review)

Review by Dean Galanis
Produced by Jacob Aaron Estes, Jim Hart,
Lorenzo P. Lampthwait, Jacob Mosler, Rick Rosenthal
Written and Directed by Jay Martin
Starring Luke Mitchell, Jason Ritter, Zane Holtz,
Leven Rambin, Kris Kristofferson, Joel Murray

This first feature from writer/director Jay Martin is a surprisingly tight, entertaining heist film. Martin stumbles here and there – particularly towards the end – but he does a mostly commendable job with a well-worn subgenre.

Three small-town friends from high school, Sam (Luke Mitchell), his brother Mike (Jason Ritter) and Owen (Zane Holtz) have each fallen on hard times in their twenties, especially Sam, who’s just been laid off from his factory job, with only his pregnant wife’s (Leven Rambin) diner waitress tips getting them by. Sam and Mike start selling pot together, but when Owen is released from prison, they all decide they should go for a bigger score.

They approach a dangerous, shifty local drug lord, but when things very quickly go seriously awry, they are then forced into a desperate plan: rob the local bank.

They reason that since police response to a call takes around 8-10 minutes, they need to be in and out in 7 minutes.

As is the case with the vast majority of heist films, things don’t go so smoothly.

When Ripoffs Fail: The Inevitable MAC AND ME Flashback

Popular trends always start with something groundbreaking.  Today's Kim Kardashian fascination started with Paris Hilton's combined Simple Life television show and gonzo pornography released in the early '00s.

My Little Pony started the same way...

...but you know, fewer selfies and less porn.

In the '80s, it was all about E.T. The Extra Terrestrial;  a movie about an alien stranded on earth, taken in by a young boy and his siblings.

It taught a generation about caring for the distressed, that pure love can concur any obstacle, and the importance of true friendship.

Like those of its kind, it transcended the label "movie" into a true film.

However, as much as Forces of Geek wants me to review good things, I'm simply a glutton for the worst of the worst so I'll be looking at the bastard son of E.T.

MAC and Me.
