STARTING OVER: When Romantic Comedies Were Made For Adults

$

Written by Generoso Fierro

I will use director Alan J. Pakula’s 1979 effort, Starting Over to discuss a genre that I feel that is truly lost: the intelligently made “rom com.”

We all know the term “rom com,” that hideous mess of the last few decades of the Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson kind that serves its ideas so warmed over that the mere mention of one will send most film watchers who expect anything more than a trifle running for the hills. There was a time though when romance was not always looked at in a giggling beautiful people kind of way; you all remember the time when the Albert Brooks and Woody Allens dominated the landscape, don’t you?

Alan J. Pakula was no where near the aforementioned directors’ world during the 1970s, as he, like so many of his contemporaries, were too busy examining the paranoia of a Nixon-era America in films like Klute, All The President’s Men and The Parallax View.

One wonders why after such huge successes, that Pakula would gravitate towards romance?

ARCHIE COMICS Expands On WORLD OF ARCHIE #1 With Three New Titles Via Kickstarter Crowdfunding Platform

Publisher to launch new JUGHEAD, BETTY & VERONICA and LIFE WITH KEVIN comic book series with help of dedicated fandom

ARCHIE #1 Cover by Fiona Staples

Archie Comics, the acclaimed and bestselling comic book publisher that is home to some of the best-known pop culture creations in the world, including Archie, Jughead, Betty & Veronica, Josie & The Pussycats, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the hit AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE series, announced today that it would launch a historic crowdfunding campaign via the popular Kickstarter platform.

The Kickstarter campaign’s call to action is a simple one: Help Archie Comics build a New Riverdale. Specifically, the Kickstarter will ask fans to help fund a slate of titles that build off the surefire success of ARCHIE #1 — the debut issue of a new, ongoing ARCHIE series from writer Mark Waid (Daredevil, Kingdom Come) and artist Fiona Staples (Saga). The series will be crafted by some of the biggest names in the comic book industry and feature the most beloved characters in comic book history.

The three new titles, launching over the next 18 months, include:

JUGHEAD

Featuring the adventures of Archie’s hamburger-loving best friend, from acclaimed writer Chip Zdarsky (Sex Criminals, Howard the Duck) and an artist TBA. An off-the-wall series full of laughs, unexpected twists and a modern sense of humor.

BETTY AND VERONICA

Girl-next-door Betty Cooper and wealthy socialite Veronica Lodge are best friends and fiercely competitive. While they both have a history with that guy Archie, the series puts the focus squarely on them — their friendship, their high school lives and adventures beyond Riverdale. Written and drawn by comic book legend Adam Hughes (Wonder Woman, Before Watchmen: Doctor Manhattan).

LIFE WITH KEVIN

Kevin Keller, the hugely-popular and historic character that broke new ground in Riverdale by being the first gay character in the company’s publishing history returns in a new ongoing series. Writer/artist Dan Parent (Kevin Keller) and inker J. Bone (The Spirit) tell a tale of an older, more experienced Kevin as he navigates a new city, new romance and leaving home.

“Our fans are part of our family — they’re an integral part of everything we do,” said Archie Comics Publisher/Co-CEO Jon Goldwater. “We’re not flush with corporate cash like Marvel or DC. But we’re also not afraid to take calculated risks. With this Kickstarter, fans have the chance to get in on the ground floor of an exciting and forward-thinking initiative. Fans can help build a New Riverdale, brick-by-brick. We’ve put together a stellar lineup of titles — featuring the best and the brightest creators working on our top characters. With your help, we can make this New Riverdale a reality. The best part? This is only the beginning.”

The crowdfunding initiative marks the latest part of the company’s 75th anniversary celebration — while also marking the beginning of a new era for the long-running publisher. With the launch of ARCHIE #1 on July 8, the company will be poised to reimagine its core characters while retaining the humorous and edgy elements that made them instant sensations when they first appeared.

“When I first stepped into the Archie offices, the brand was frozen in time. The stories felt stiff and dated. That’s no longer the case,” Goldwater said. “This is a new Archie. A new Jughead. A new Betty and Veronica and a new Kevin. We’re holding onto the things that made them great — the humor, the love triangle, the friendship and youthful exuberance — but presenting them in a way that can appeal to everyone, from classic comic fans to new readers who might not know every nook and cranny of our history. Each part of this is a brick that will help build a New Riverdale. But we can only do it with your help.”

1985 Was A Good Year: Reflections BEYOND THUNDERDOME

"1985 was a good year," sings Passion Pit on the chorus of their latest single Lifted Up, which is weird because the lead singer wasn't born until 1987.

For me personally, it just so happens 1985 was, as Tori Amos sings, a "pretty good year."

Despite the looming threat of nuclear annihilation, courtesy of the still lingering Cold War, I was about to become a man.  Ferociously distracted from studying my Bar Mitzvah haftarah via my tutor's audio-taped recording, I found bliss in the growing availability of videotape rentals, an increased love for all-things-horror, and, of course, becoming a teenager at last.

Don't get me wrong.  1985 wasn't the year I bloomed.

Puberty wouldn't show signs until at least sophomore year (awkward), I was still sporting incredibly nerdy bifocals that took up half my face, and my parents still didn't have cable.

I do remember going to the movies in 1985.

A lot of movies.

Win THE BEST OF THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW on DVD!

Comedian Alan King famously said,"Ed Sullivan can't sing, can't dance and can't tell a joke, but he does it better than anyone else." And while the host of the eponymous show may not have been as talented as his guests, he had an uncanny ability to spot top-notch talent and welcomed everyone to his stage: politicians, poets, sports idols, Broadway stars, musicians -- be they rock, classical, jazz, opera, gospel, pop, rhythm and blues -- as well as comedians, novelty acts, children's entertainment legends, and acts that defied label.

Sullivan filled his weekly showcase with something for everyone, and he was so successful at it that he became America's most powerful cultural arbiter. Presiding over many "firsts" on American television, including appearances by Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Jack Benny, Hank Williams, Jr., Itzhak Perlman and Harry Belafonte, Sullivan is probably best remembered for bringing us Elvis Presley's three historic appearances in 1956/'57, and the Beatles' three earth-shattering performances in 1964.

In its 23-year run, The Ed Sullivan Show presented a remarkable array of over 10,000 performers and celebrities, including the most spectacular ensemble of stars in show business and The Best of The Ed Sullivan Show reflects that across 6 carefully curated DVDs: "Unforgettable Performances," "The All-Star Comedy Special," "World's Greatest Novelty Acts," "Amazing Animal Acts," the "50th Anniversary Special" and an exclusive bonus disc never before available at retail. The collection includes:

  • Rare appearances by Barbra Streisand, Bobby Darin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Marlon Brando, Humphrey Bogart, Fred Astaire and more
  • Rock 'n' roll's greatest -- including Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Byrds, Janis Joplin and more
  • Comedic talents Milton Berle, Carol Burnett, George Carlin, Rodney Dangerfield, Phyllis Diller, Jackie Gleason, Bob Hope, Richard Pryor, Joan Rivers, the Smothers Brothers, Flip Wilson and more
  • Classic Broadway performances from My Fair Lady, Man of la Mancha and West Side Story
  • The best of the daring acrobats, challenging balancing acts and dexterous jugglers-selected by Ed as his personal favorites
  • Zippy the roller-skating chimp, Heidi the Talking Dog, the legendary Lipizzaner stallions and more than a dozen other amazing animal acts
  • Sullivan in a rare comic sketch with comedy legends Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz

This historic DVD set, The Best of The Ed Sullivan Show contains over 2 hours of special bonus features, including the only surviving on-camera interview with Ed and Sylvia Sullivan, exclusive interviews with Milton Berle, Phyllis Diller, Shari Lewis, Johnny Mathis, Michelle Phillips, Joan Rivers, Smokey Robinson, Señor Wences, Flip Wilson and more.

SWAG A-GO-GO: reviews for stuff you should check out

Reviews by Stefan Blitz

Here at FOG! HQ lots of cool stuff comes in, giving us the opportunity to check out some merchandise. Here's our thoughts on some of the latest stuff that's passed through our rigorous testing.

Star Wars "Stay Classy" T-Shirt

"Lando's not a system. He's a man. Lando Calrissian. He's a card player, gambler, scoundrel."

And he's classy.  Damn classy.

As administrator of Cloud City, Lando knows what's going on.

So when he tells you to stay classy, you better do it.

Before he sics Lobot and a half dozen Ugnauts on your ass.

This shirt reminds you and informs the ignorant that Cloud City is one classy place.

Lando says so.

Star Wars Chewbacca Extra Chewie T-Shirt

If you like your shirts with extras Wookiee, then this is the one for you.

It's the Star Wars equivalent of the Oreos Double Stuff, showing off exactly when "Extra Chewie" means.

In other words, a whole lot of Chewie.

Which is fantastic.  More Chewbacca in anything is a blessing.  If it had been up to me, his career would have been far more diverse.

He could have taken over Jason Patric's role in Speed 2, Could have played Will Graham instead of Edward Norton in Red Dragon and would have killed it opposite Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men.

At least this shirt lets everyone know there's never too much Chewie.

 New Teen Titans T-Shirt

Back in the glorious 80s, two books defined comics: The Uncanny X-Men from Marvel and The New Teen Titans from DC.

This shirt captures the iconic core members of The Titans (soon to be a new show on TNT called Blackbirds):

Nightwing (formerly Robin The Boy Wonder), Wonder Girl, Cyborg, Raven, Kid Flash, Starfire and Changeling!

Under the creative direction of Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, The New Teen Titans was one of the best and most defining comic books of the decade.

Now, get your old school superheroing on and add this shirt to your collection.

Titans Together!

Batman '66 Batmobile Batman Pop! Vinyl Figure

Atomic batteries to power!  Turbines to speed!  Cuteness to maximum!

There might not be a cooler vehicle in the history of pop culture than the George Barris designed Batmobile.

Scaled to fit the included Funko Pop! Adam West Batman figure, and you've reached a whole new level of Bat-tastic, Kitschy, Retro Goodness, old chum!

This fantastic collectible is a must have for any self-respecting Bat-Fan and a perfect way to celebrate the Caped Crusader as he patrols Gotham City for the scourge of rogues causing havoc to Commissioner Gordon and the good citizens.

Holy, dark knight detective plastic reproduction!

Pac-Man Ghost Light

If you grew up in the Eighties, you will never forget the impact that Pac Man had on American culture.

A simple 8-bit game featuring a pill popping pie shaped avatar who traveled a maze trying to outwit a quartet of ghosts (Inky, Pinky, Blinky and Clyde) spawned breakfast cereals, an animated series and even a hit album, Pac Man Fever...

I have a pocketfull of quarters
And I'm headed to the arcade

I don't have alot of money
But I'm bringing everything I made

I have a callous on my finger
And my shoulder's hurtin', too

I'm gonna eat 'em all up
Just as soon as they turn blue

That feeling can be yours forever with this pretty awesome lamp.  This Pac light changes color, rotating through the color spectrum (and the option to change according to the music reminds me a little bit of the seizure inducing Pokemon animation, as the Ghost colors strobe to maddening effect).  It's powered by a USB cable (which is included).  Cherries and pretzels are unfortunately, not included.

Liquid Glass Thinking Putty

For anyone who get's a little restless in a meeting, on the phone, brainstorming or just watching tv, the liquid glass thinking putty is a must have.

I half expected that after playing with it a bit that it would become cloudy, but it remains rystal clear, reminiscent of playing with melted glass.  It's also odorless and doesn't leave any residue (oily or otherwise) on your skin.

It's also really addicting.  It can be stretched, shattered, kneaded, snapped and even melted.  it is, without a doubt, one of the most basic concepts, executed flawlessly.

As a matter of fact, I have it next to me on the desk to my right as I'm typing this.  I might need to take a break...

NomadClip Carabiner Cable

To the untrained eye, one might notice this climber's clip attached to my computer messenger bag, and think it's nothing more than a keyring.

But, it's become one of the most essential tools I carry with me; a rugged charging cable that I have with me at all times in case my phone needs a refreshing charge.

And since I carry on the exterior of my bag, it gets banged around more than it should.  But unlike other charging cables, this one is housed in a combination of durable engineering-grade polycarbonate and reinforced stainless steel, providing it with the strength and ruggedness needed to carry it with me at all times.

The question isn't if you need it, but rather how quickly and how often.  This is as necessary as having your phone in a case.

iRig Mic Field

Like many people, I use my smartphone constantly.  Checking news or social media, watching videos, making notes and occasionally actually making phone calls.

I do, however, use it often as a recorder, for making notes to myself or more importantly, using to conduct interviews.  And although the built in microphone is serviceable, it doesn't always get the job done.  And after having sampled several external microphones over the years, the iRig Mic Field is by far the best device I've ever used.

Able to record in digital stereo, this mic connects via the Apple Lightning connector and rotates 90° for optimal audio/video positioning.  The sound quality is fantastic and can be used for audio or video with ease.  Another great feature is that there's an integrated headphone output for real-time audio monitoring and an LED indicator allowing easy level adjustment.

Well designed and delivering exceptional quality, the iRig Mic Field is an easy and solid recommendation.

Marvel Retro Captain America Limited Edition Action Figure Box Set

I previously reviewed the Spider-Man edition of this figure, produced by Diamond Select and for the most part liked it, with a few reservations.  Suffice to say, they knocked this one out of the park.

Based on (although seeming slightly smaller) than the original Mego design, this set includes a reproduction of the Seventies Mego figure, plus variations on costumes and accessories allowing you to create/transform the figure into Steve Rogers in his army uniform  (and with the classic original triangle shaped shield) and a more modern take on Captain America with an updated sculpt, costume and shield.

This is a vast improvement over the Spider-Man figure.  The costumes fit better and overall is a less fragile product. This is not a kid's toy (if the price wasn't already an indicator), but if you're a fan of Megos, Marvel, or Captain America, you will in no way be disappointed.  The packaging is sturdy, but as I was informed from my previous review, an X-Acto knife can remove the figures and accessories cleanly and the included magazine is both informative and entertaining.  My only wish now would be a companion Bucky/Winter Soldier release.

Secret Agent Projection Alarm Clock

In theory this seemed like a good idea.

In execution it reminds me more of a paranoid conspiracist sleeping with a gun under their pillow.

Granted it's not really a gun.

It's actually a vibrating alarm clock shaped like a Walther PPK that you can  pull the trigger, which then projects the time on the wall.

This features a snooze alarm and works fine.  I guess actually sleeping with a gun under my pillow (real or fake) isn't all that appealing.

And in all honesty, kind of in bad taste.  If you're a gun enthusiast, congratulations, you have a new way to start your day.

Amp I Right? Portable Speaker

This retro inspired speaker is nothing more than a piece of plastic.  And a disappointing one at that.

One is supposed to cradle their cell phone in the device and sound amplifies through the hollow plastic enhancing the sound louder.  It's a clever play on old technology, only it's not that clever and in person it's rather cheap looking.

Batteries are required to enhance the volume and unlike the photograph to the left, my phone has never displayed like that (as a matter of fact, the home screen is never horizontal).  There's an included USB cable for charging purposes (which also makes little sense since the device runs on batteries).  Take a nice look at the photo.  It never is as cool as that.

Thumbs Up UK Click Stick Selfie Pole

Ah, the selfie.

One of the most tacky, narcissistic additions to our culture in quite some time.

Even the description is unnerving:
We’ve all been there; you gather your friends for that massive group Selfie, you are reaching for that button... And damn! You’ve just cropped yourself out! Designed to ease the strain of taking Selfies, thumbsUp!'s Click Stick will drastically change the way you take photos! This smartphone monopod is intergrated with a button which allows you to remotely take photos; The Click Stick needs no bluetooth, pairing or batteries! Simply plug your Smartphone into the headphone socket, strike a pose and click the stick!

So it's with great embarrassment and humility that I have to admit this is pretty damned cool.  It's simple, it's easy and it takes great pictures.  In addition to selfies, it allows you to get a better photo in a crowd by adjusting it to a straight angle and holding it higher than other people's heads.  It's also small enough at seven inches that you can bring it with you (and when it's fully extended to 39" you can pretty much capture anything.

Highly recommended.

Imagine “Rainbow Brite.”

Blonde hair, clashing blinding colors, riding rainbows on a horsie. Got it?

Now instead of a magical pixie who uses the power of color to spread a message of hope, she’s a teenage girl with a funky sense of style who is challenged by mean girls in her school.

How about “ALF”?

Sarcastic alien from Melmac who lived with the Tanners with a taste for kitties?

How would you feel with they rebooted the character as an unpopular, normal teenager from the planet Earth who is just looking for acceptance, but wants to stay true to who he is?

Would you consider these updates on the horrific side? Abominations? Unnecessary?

Slightly traumatic to your fond childhood memories?

Now you know how I feel about the new Jem and the Holograms movie.

Updated by Blumhouse in an attempt of ostracize both fans of the original series and millennials they don’t seem to understand, the new Jem is anything but truly outrageous.

Who Wants to Live Forever? Re-Examining CANNONBALL’s Status as an Immortal

$

0

Last month, I wrote a piece on everyone’s favorite mutant Guthrie, good old Sammie boy (better known as Cannonball), and ever so briefly touched upon his whole flirtation with immortality.

So why revisit it?

Because, in an occurrence rarer than a round of hivemind internet outrage from Tumblr being marginally justified, I got an email about the article asking me about that whole ordeal.

Fan mail? Who knew?!

Like this…only one instead of many. And electronic.
So…yeah…not really like this at all…

So, I did what any writer would do. After celebrating and calling everyone I knew and taking ad space out in my hometown paper to announce I had a reader, I responded with a quick answer and promised a more illuminating one in an upcoming column.

So, Mike, this one’s for you.

First debuting alongside the other original recipe New Mutants in 1982’s Marvel Graphic Novel #4 by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, Samuel Zachary Guthrie quickly became a fan favorite, going by the name of Cannonball due to his mutant ability to propel himself through the air at great speeds while surrounding himself in a nigh indestructible blast field.

Assuming the role of co-leader along with Dani “Mirage” Moonstar, Sam helped shape the future generation of X-Men, eventually being one of the few students to have been mentored by three very distinct types of teachers—Professor Charles Xavier, Magneto (who agreed to watch over the school when Xavier was taken into Shi’ar space in order to repair his failing health), and the mysterious (at the time, now we pretty much know everything about him) Cable.

He kind of looked more like he was haunting things than flying.

BATMAN UNLIMITED: ANIMAL INSTINCTS (review)

Review by Clay N. Ferno

The strange Batsuits with angular black and yellow emblem we’ve been seeing at Target from Mattel have been finally been brought to life by Warner Bros Animation and DC Comics. If you were off-put by the Batman and Robin (1997) look of the things, you are not alone.

My expectation of an eventual animated property were that of a Joel Schumacher ice rocket, plummeting further into the abyss.

Expectations mean a lot to Batman fans, and we especially take note when they are exceeded.
Bat-fans may be surprised by this with the latest offering, Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts

Keep in mind though, this isn’t New 52 Batman, this movie is geared toward a younger all-ages crowd.

Roger Craig Smith reprises his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne from the video games Lego Batman 3 and Batman: Arkham Origins. Charlie Schlatter returns to The Flash role from Superman: TAS and The Batman, Green Arrow appears alongside Nightwing, Red Robin, and Alfred for an alliance that is more Outlaws than Justice League to face down Penguin and the ‘Animalitia’.

Chaos Theory : A Look Back At JURASSIC PARK

“We have to go back, Stefan!”

That’s what I told FOG! chief Stefan Blitz when pitching a look back at Jurassic Park in anticipation of the upcoming Jurassic World. Not really, but he said, "go for it", so hold onto your butts, we’re about to dive into a retro review 65 million years in the making.

I consider myself a pretty big JP fan, especially the first one.

Big enough that I plunked down money to revisit the park for its 20th anniversary in 3D and loved every minute of it. Man, Mr. DNA looked AMAZING in 3D. The dinos looked pretty cool too not to mention Goldblum’s waxed chest.

As with any big budget blockbuster, you can pick apart the logic of the plot and characters all you want, but one thing that remains pretty untouchable is the ambitious scope of the project and the feeling of wonderment at seeing these convincing depictions of dinosaurs up on the screen for the first time.

We’ve come a long way since Gertie the Dinosaur.

Moving halfway around the world with a new love is a huge step and Bruce, with no job, friends or real clue about what he is getting himself into, is quick to face the many unique challenges and culture clashes that living in a foreign land presents -- most notably, how to win over Emma's strange and very Swedish family. Walter Simonson's STAR SLAMMERS: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION (review)

Review by Lily Fierro
Star Slammers: The Complete Collection
Written and illustrated by Walter Simonson
Lettered by John Workman
Colored by Leonard O'Grady
Published by IDW Publishing
Price: $49.99
ISBN: 978-1-63140-230-2

Question: How do you read a collection created in parts from the 1970s to the 1990s?

Answer: By trying to connect the dots between the parts?

Star Slammers: The Complete Collection compiles all of Walter Simonson’s creations for the Star Slammers series across three decades.

In the informative and enlightening introduction, Simonson details the humble origins of Star Slammers as a promotional series to get the World Science Fiction Convention of 1974 to be held in Washington D.C. which then transformed into major projects during his time at RISD.

In the process of explaining the earliest incarnation of Star Slammers, Simonson also outlines his own trajectory of growth over the course of expanding the series, setting a guidance course of progress for the reader to follow while reading the collection.

Oddly, this course to follow Simonson’s growth as an artist and storyteller is paused and put aside until the end of the collection, for the introduction describes the RISD and World SF Convention work for Star Slammers, but those pages are placed toward the end of the collection.

Instead of diving into the infancy of Star Slammers, the collection somewhat jarringly begins with the first formal publications of the series, opening with Marvel Graphic Novel No. 6, Star Slammers, originally released in 1983.

This first graphic novel of Star Slammers exists as a perfect stand alone piece to introduce the history and world of the Star Slammers, the most powerful and capable mercenaries in space. With this first graphic novel, the reader understands the ultimate weapon of the Star Slammers, the Silvermind Bridge, a telepathic capability of all Star Slammers to communicate rapidly and simultaneously with each other, allowing for ultimate unity in battle and a communication channel difficult to interrupt and disband.

Following the company's enormously successful 2012 release of THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW: ULTIMATE COLLECTION featuring the best of Seasons 6-11, THE LOST EPISODES will feature original, uncut episodes from Seasons1-5, hand-picked by Carol herself. The iconic variety show's first five seasons have been unseen since their original airing (1967-1972) and included in this highly-anticipated collection will be the show's inaugural episode, the first performances of many of Carol's most famous sketches ( including the debuts of As the Stomach Turns, "Carol and Sis" and "The Old Folks"), legendary guest stars, and show-stopping musical numbers.

Interview conducted by Elizabeth Weitz

For fans of comedy, comedian Dana Gould is staple food, someone who sits on the shelf next to Carlin, Pryor and (insert another favorite comedian here) and gets pulled out anytime you need a little pick-me-up (I like to consider him the human equivalent of a Mother's Little Helper).

If that sound incredibly verbose of me to state, well you haven't truly sat down and watched/listened to one of his comedy specials or witnessed one of his acting gigs on Parks and Rec, The Ben Stiller Show, Maron or the plethora of other shows he appeared on (and let's not forget he was a writer on The Simpsons, a producer on Parks and Rec, runs his own postcast, The Dana Gould Hour, and told one of the weirdest versions of "The Dirtiest Jokes of All Time" in the documentary The Aristocrats).

To celebrate the fact that Gould went Old Skool with the release of his stand-up special Let Me Put My Thoughts In You on vinyl, he chatted with FOG! about the good ole' days of listening to comedy albums, what it was like to work on The Simpsons and yes, the time he "surprised" 70s star Paul Williams dressed as Dr. Zaius.

Yeah, you're going to want to check it out after the break.
