Additional First Wave Announcements Include World Premieres of JERUZALEM, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, and many more!

UNVEILING OUR 2015 POSTER ART: FANTASIA CONTINUES ITS
CELEBRATION OF REGIONAL FOLKLORE WITH THE WENDIGO

The 19th annual Fantasia International Film Festival is gearing up to rush Montreal with three weeks of cinematic inspiration and fantastical visions from across the world from July 14 until August 4, 2015.

Our complete lineup of programming and special events will be revealed in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, here’s an early First Wave Announcement of selected highlights and info to whet your appetite for the exciting things to come!

In recent editions, Fantasia has showcased poster art informed by various regional legends and myths, including the Chasse Galerie also known as" The Flying Canoe" and, what’s become the official festival emblem, the Cheval Noir (Black Horse). For our 2015 poster, we’ve turned once again to Montreal artist Donald Caron, who has blessed us with a stunning depiction of the Cheval Noir facing the Wendigo, a mythical creature born of Native American folklore. The myth is believed to have been created as a warning that those who may have considered turning to cannibalism during times of famine due to harsh winter conditions, could be transformed into a werewolf-like monster.

I remember as a kid the selection of t-shirts was limited to whatever heat transfers that were available in the binders on the counter of the store.  It wasn't until I was in college that it seemed like most of those stores disappeared.

Thankfully, times have changed and there are shirts available for almost every pop culture interest.

And with 80sTees, I get my nostalgia and a healthy selection of some of the coolest shirts on Earth.

Plus, 80sTees also carries socks, costumes, ugly Christmas sweaters, hoodies and more.

These are a few of my recent favorites.

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich
Written by David Nicholls
Based on Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy
Directed by Thomas Vinterberg
Starring Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts,
Michael Sheen, Tom Sturridge, Juno Temple

I really thought this film was going to be good.

The trailer made it seem beautiful, heart-wrenching, interesting.

No. No no. It’s a nineteenth century soap opera that moves slower than molasses dripping from a non-greased measuring cup.

Cary Mulligan plays young, independent Bathsheba Everdeen.

I know. I kept muttering, “Katniss!” each time they said her last name. Bathsheba is inexplicably irresistible to all sorts of men – a kind, shy, handsome farmer, a semi-creepy, disheveled middle-aged man, and a douche-y, manipulative soldier.

One two three.

Here we go on an empty journey of irrational infatuations and unwarranted marriage proposals. Literally – each guy proposes to Ms. Everdeen within half an hour of meeting her.

And why?

THE D TRAIN (review)

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by David Bernad, Jack Black, Ben Latham-Jones,
Priyanka Mattoo, Barnaby Thompson, Mike White
Written and Directed by Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel
Starring Jack Black, James Marsden, Kathryn Hahn,
Russell Posner, Jeffrey Tambor, Mike White

What starts off as a strong goofy comedy, quickly devolves into a hyperbolic pointless plotline that isn’t entertaining in the least.

The D Train is an exaggerated bromance that claims originality by throwing in a sex scene between the title characters.

Initially comedic for the ridiculousness of the scenario and James Marsden’s delivery, the film ends up centering on the sexual encounter resulting in a foolish production that is overacted and boring.  It really seems like it will be funny for a moment, but no, it’s simply pointless and off-putting.

The D Train is about a lifetime loser, Dan Landsman (Jack Black), desperate to make his high school reunion a grand success.

His goal is to be the popular savior of the event by recruiting the former leader of his class, Oliver Lawless (James Marsden), so as to entice the rest of his classmates to attend. It seems it will be an impossible feat given Dan’s complete lack of awareness of appropriate social cues and off-putting demanding attitude.

Dan is selfish, he’s mean, he’s whiny. His pants are high, the short sleeve button ups are unbecoming, and his short cut, side-parted hair is literally icing atop his unappealing, unpopular character.

Jack Black usually has great timing as an effervescent, grungy dude with shifty eyes and enjoyable outbursts. As Dan, he is annoying instead of humorous. Black can do much better than his overdone performance in The D Train. Very disappointing.

HOT PURSUIT (review)

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by Dana Fox, Bruna Papandrea, Reese Witherspoon
Written by David Feeney, John Quaintance
Directed by Anne Fletcher
Starring Reese Witherspoon, Sofía Vergara, Jim Gaffigan,
Robert Kazinsky, Vincent Laresca,  John Carroll Lynch,
Michael Mosley, Matthew Del Negro, Richard T. Jones

I was sick of Sofia Vergara two seasons of Modern Family ago. And Reese Witherspoon. Come on love, you just wowed us with Wild.

Why?

Why this now? I know I know.  Spring fillers, contracts, blah blah blah.

As I suspected it might, Hot Pursuit is void of plot and sentiment but full of cleavage—a constant gag that gets old after the fourth extreme close-up inside a thirty second period.  The supposed point of the film: Officer Cooper (Witherspoon) must help Mrs. Reva (Vergara), the wife of a mobster, get to Dallas to testify against the notorious leader of a drug cartel.

As the daughter of a renowned cop (whom we never meet), you’d think Cooper (Witherspoon) would be an expert officer instead of a neurotic klutz with zero field talent. And Mrs. Reva (Vergara) could have been given a back-story that rationalized her constant attempts to abandon Cooper’s protection. Witherspoon and Vergara are talented and an amusing pairing, so it’s a shame they were forced to work with such a shitty script and story, if you can call it that.

Slow Ride: Films That Take Aim At Theme Parks

Long lines, abnormally high prices, other people...

On the right day, a favorite theme park can resemble one of Dante’s circles of hell.

Which is way they have often became a favorite setting for many a horror film.

It’s easy to borrow against the notion that a day at a family fun park can easily go wrong with so many factors in play.

In other words, even a play where you remember the most joy has a seedy underbelly that can be easily explored.

While some premises are goofy and unbelievable, other movies that use a theme park as their focus tend to have a message: Get out while you can.

Here is a look a few of those films, both fictional and documentary, in which the dark side of theme parks are spotlighted:

Review by Steven Scott

Executive Produced by John Benjamin Hickey, Bob Giraldi, JM Wagner
Produced by Alon Gelnik, Ricardo Lorenzo
Written by JM Wagner
Directed by Ed Hellman
Starring Ashlee Mundy, Jimmy Dalton, JM Wagner

I do love a good short. Having come from a film school background, I’ve made a few in my time, and it’s a great exercise in compact storytelling.

Compact—that’s the tricky part.

Producing a feature length motion picture certainly comes with its own set of challenges, but telling a tight narrative in a short span of time can be equally difficult in that you must take your characters, and by extension, your audience, on an emotional journey in a fraction of the time.

No easy feat.

Dime Crimes #34 introduces us to colorful characters ripped straight from the pages of a pulp comic, and furthermore, takes a mundane scenario of welcoming a new tenant and turns it into a tale of intrigue and suspense.

Who is this slick stranger and why does he look so familiar?

That Time I Almost Told SPIKE From BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER That I Loved Him

A True Story by Chris Brennaman

I almost told James Marsters that I loved him once.

This was all the way back in the summer of 2003 at Atlanta’s Dragon Con convention. The fifth (and sadly, final) season of Angel was in the middle of shooting so that meant Marsters, attending the con as a guest, was in his full bleached blond Spike glory.

Understand, I had met celebrities before and not just in a fan capacity. I was already a reporter by that point and meeting famous people came with the job, be it actor, musician or politician. The point is, I not only knew how to act around the more famed folk, but was pretty well versed in interacting with them like a normal human being.

To make the impending situation worse, my whole family attended Dragon Con that year, mom included.

While I was the only dyed-in-the-wool geek in the family, the entire Brennaman clan nerds out for all things Joss Whedon. So hearing that James Marsters was making a stop in Atlanta saw the entire family waiting in line to meet the guy one summer afternoon.

If memory serves, mom was the first up to meet and she handled it like a champ. Shook his hand, told him how much of a fan she was and moved along her merry way.

My brother was up next. Same thing. Big fan, enjoy your work, move along.

Then my dad, then my wife.

Then came my turn.

And while cards, flowers, brunch, candles, and perfumes are nice, here are some of our suggestions.

FOG! Chats With Author JON LAND About 'BLACK SCORPION: THE TYRANT REBORN'

Interview conducted by Stefan Blitz

Jon Land writes the kinds of books that ruin your day.

You pick one up and start reading and the next thing you know several hours have gone by.  Or even worse, you've been up all night reading, only catching a brief moment or two of sleep because you needed to know how the book ended.

In other words, the good kind of "ruining your day."

Land is the author of over 25 thriller novels including the Caitlin Strong series (which focuses on a Texas Ranger), the Ben Kamal and Danielle Barnea series (about a member of the new Palestinian police force on the West Bank, and a Shin Bet (Israel’s FBI) agent in Israel) and the Blaine McCracken series (centered around a rogue agent with the CIA).

His latest book, Black Scorpion: The Tyrant Reborn, the second volume in the Michael Tiranno series is in stores now.  Jon took some time out of his very busy schedule to discuss the new book, his creative process and the thriller genre.

Giant Robot Rocket Boobies: A Flashback To The Magic of MAZINGER Z

As a young boy my parents had a majestic television with many knobs.

When one would twist these knobs, one would find a particular channel: The Spanish TV Network.

And on that Spanish TV Network was a series better than a robot unicorn battling a SIM version of Mr. T riding atop a cocker spaniel.

That show… was Mazinger Z.

The show was like those blue guys from Avatar made sweet love to some spicy Japanese Robots while Austin Power watches (in the dark, breathing heavily), with the added bonus of ROCKET BOOBS!

There was absolutely nothing better than a Japanese show dubbed in Spanish with poorly written English subtitles laid over the top.

Pure Magic!

The premise of the show was simple: save the world from a life of conquest by the dreaded Dr. Hell.

The Pull List: SECRET WARS #1, SWORDS OF SORROW #1, DEAD DROP #1 & More!

$

Check out what I checked out this week.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

Secret Wars #1
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Esad Ribic
Colorist: Ive Svoricina
Cover: Alex Ross
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $4.99

Time has officially run out. Only two worlds remain.

This is the story that Jonathan Hickman has been building towards since Avengers #1 and New Avengers #1 kicked off the Marvel NOW initiative back in December 2012 and January 2013.

Hickman has done something special here as he’s weaved a story that is easy to appreciate regardless of whether you’ve been keeping up with his Avengers’ books or jumped right into the deep end without knowing how to navigate the waters of this universe ending event.

Secret Wars is a name that has been synonymous with Marvel Comics since the inaugural series carrying that name occurred in 1984.

Mainstream audiences became familiar with the property when Mattel released Marvel Comic action figures tied into the limited series comic book to to stores that same year.  There have been other limited runs using the name but this 2015 edition promises to change everything……and it does!

When examining the past, present and future of the Marvel Universe in relation to Secret Wars, Doctor Doom is one of the most, if not, the most important piece of the puzzle. He caused a lot of damage in the inaugural series and he is pretty much doing the same today.

The book opens with Doom, Doctor Strange and Molecule man face-to-face with the Beyonders. Doom discovered their plan to destroy the multiverse and his plan to stop them triggers some unfortunate side effects which brings us to the current state of affairs. There is a white light that appears to represents God’s hand in all of this, and of course, Hickman makes it pay off as Doom has absolutely no problem defying him.

Things transition to the battle to end all battles in New York City as Earth – 616 (Regular Marvel Universe) and Earth- 1610 (The Ultimate Universe) throw everything at each other in order to save their world. Hickman did a superb job of conveying the gravity of this grave situation through the actions of the characters. In the Ultimate side of things, S.H.I.E.L.D. is forced to work with Maker in order to find a way to stop the incursion by destroying Earth- 616.

Maker, the former Reed Richards, has become an egotistical, megalomaniac, and is the last person Nick Fury would ever work with, but realizes has no choice even though he knows that Maker has his own agenda. In the regular universe, the Future Foundation is in final preparations to launch an arc to salvage their world while saving some important folks to rebuild the human race if their plan fails.

Esad Ribic deserves all the props in the world for making the opening salvo of this series such a visual delight that made it very easy to tell which universe we were in as the story progressed. The images of the two worlds coming closer and closer together echoed that time almost up feeling that added more tension with each turn of the page.

The desperation on both sides was pronounced to the nth degree when Cyclops absorbed the Phoenix force. This moment gave me pause because it was a roll of the dice as to which version of the powerful entity would appear. Knowing the implications of what each one brings to the table made me cringe because things could go from bad to worse in a heartbeat.

Some of our favorite heroes bite the big one here and normally it’s easy to ignore since everyone eventually comes back form the dead. However, with 33 Marvel titles being cancelled due to this event, things are kind of at a standstill right now since we don’t know what questions the emergence of Battleworld will answer thus, their deaths in this particular case are a little more intriguing.

There were also some fun moments to be found here which speaks to how Hickman can so easily find levity in the midst of a cataclysm where is doesn’t detract or distract from the main story being played out. Wilson Fisk has a moment with some of the other street level villains, and it was nice to see how they reacted to the end of the world since their lust for power and money is small potatoes in the overall scheme of things.

Sure enough, the Punisher crashes the party as only he can. Just like Fisk and company, Punisher can’t offer any assistance that would help the likes of Iron Man and Hulk, so he savors these last few moments and utters an epic line that fit the character perfectly while leaving the end result to our imagination. I normally hate when this happens because it’s the writer’s obligation to tell and finish the story we’re paying for.

However, this is an exception because history shows this could go one way or another.

My phone blew up within hours of the book’s release because a lot of my non-comic reading friends were convinced by the onslaught of Marvel advertising that they needed to take part in this event. The fact that the Marvel Universe, as we know it, has ended shocked everyone not in the know. While it wasn’t a shock to someone who knew the end was near, the construction of the plot and its execution made this feel like something special.

Jonathan Hickman delivers in a big way here and with the splendid artwork of Esad Ribic and the gorgeous coloring of Ive Svorcina, Secret Wars is in excellent hands and plans to take us on a the ride of a lifetime.

Score: 5 out of 5

Celebrate The MAD MEN Era With An Excerpt and Look at AIRLINE VISUAL IDENTITY 1945-1975

$
0

Next week the series finale of Mad Men airs, concluding an inside look at the height of print advertising in the 1960’s that viewers have been treated for the last seven seasons.

That same time period was also considered “the glory age of flying” and the intersection of advertising and airlines revolutionized the travel industry, creating some of the most visually stunning corporate art of the period. And just as Don Draper crafted the messaging for Mohawk Airlines, the real Mad Men of the 1960's (such as Ivan Chermayeff, Saul Bass and Mary Wells Lawrence) were hard at work showing the public that the airline industry was the most glamorous and luxurious way to travel.

Now for the first time, the advertising of this revolutionary period has been captured in the new book, Airline Visual Identity 1945 - 1975 by Matthias C. Hühne. The book carefully curates the work of prestigious designers and advertising luminaries, taking the reader back in time to witness the glory days of the airline industry. This incredible large format book (which measures 12.2” x 16.1”) painstakingly reproduces hundreds of the best examples of commercial art from the period to give the reader a museum-like experience...up close and personal.

After the jump, check out an excerpt as well as a gallery of some amazing images.
