ANIMATION GEEK: My Mom Is An Airplane by Yulya Aronova

I love the animation genre, not so much the Hollywood elite, but the little guys, the ones who toil over each frame in obscurity, churning out short gems that dot the landscape of the information superhighway like beckoning highway tourist shops that offer up knick-knacks that will forever trigger a happy memory of your journey.

My Mother Is An Airplane! is one of those films.

It is a simple expression of wonder and sweetness. There is nothing in it that could be labeled ironic, hip or pseudo-intellectual. It is merely a story about a mom who is an airplane and it is simply one of the most innocent and luscious animated short films I have seen in a long time.

In fact, I couldn't stop smiling.

Sometimes, we need a little film like this.

Sometimes, it needs us.

Watch it after the break and pass it along.

Guy Loses Fantasy Football Bet and Is Appropriately Shamed In Front of the World...Lesson: Never Make A Bet With Your Friends

Chuck Jose lost his fantasy football league and to be honest with you, I have no idea what that means other than I need to watch the show The League to understand how important this thing is, but apparently to lose your league due to whatever makes that happen, he had to undergo humiliation by doing a shot-for-shot remake of Sia's Chandelier video.

From what I gather though the various news articles that are totally in love with this punishment, this type of castigation is not unusual, in fact to completely and utterly degrade the loser is the norm.

However, after viewing Chuck doing what he was demanded to do by his fellow leaguers, the only thing that can be learned from it, is how incredibly awesome he is.

Here's how to change a loser into a winner friends.

Is SERIAL a Fluke?

I have no doubt about the greatness of Serial.

The overnight sensation podcast is more spellbinding than a lot of shows on TV — and that’s saying something considering how much good TV there is. But I worry that the show may have blown its load in its first season.

The success of Serial is pretty easy to understand. It combines This American Life’s well-honed storytelling technique with a great crime story — maybe a perfect story.

Americans love investigative police and courtroom dramas. These are probably the most common TV shows — we never tire of this genre. Everyone likes the opportunity to vicariously play a detective and a lawyer.

Dun Dunnnn....

And Serial’s crime story is particularly compelling because of its seeming banality. It’s not just that the people are real, but they are relatable. It doesn’t involve rich people, or celebrities, or just people with seemingly perfect lives.

With Serial it’s the American experience: middle class assimilated immigrants.

Serial's first season: Did Adnan Syed kill ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee?

PIROUETTE #1 & #2 (comic review)

Review by Lily Fierro
Pirouette #1 /  Pirouette #2
Written by Mark L. Miller
Art by Carlos Granda
Colors by Carlos Granda
Letters by Jim Campbell
Published by Black Mask Studios
Cover Price: $3.99

Clowns are naturally terrifying; they are even more so if they are your family.

Pirouette is the lowest clown on the totem pole at Samwell’’s Circus, and I cannot imagine anything worse than that.

A new series from Mark L. Miller and Carlos Granda, Pirouette follows our female clown heroine during her awakening from her circus myopia. Issue one and two are currently available via Black Mask Studios, and the series has some excellent potential.

Issue one introduces the weird world of Samwell’s Circus. As expected, there is the usual collection of circus oddities ranging from acrobats to lion tamers to a giant woman on a tightrope. In addition to these entertainers, a dreadful outfit of clowns runs the entire show, led by the disheveled tyrant and supposed father of Pirouette, the Duke.

And if Pirouette’s family life could not get any worse, her mother, Lady Columbine, is also a heinous clown with her own entourage of repugnant lady clowns. With parents like Pirouette’s and an accompanying horrific extended clown family, Pirouette’s reality is a bleak and desperate one, forcing her to try to adopt a clown persona she does not want, with a looming threat of beating and berating if she does not achieve this expected character.

Top 10 TV Characters Dressed as SANTA CLAUS

$

I had this realization about myself in the last couple of years.  For me, it’s all about the Holiday Season.

Not the day of Christmas, but the month and the days leading up to the big day, all those moments that shouldn’t be special, but end up feeling that way because the time of year.

The decorations, the lights, the atmosphere and little universe created, for just about two months of the year.  Honestly what feels more like Christmas, sitting with your family on the big day arguing over how do serve this food or that, taking discarded wrapping paper out to the trash… or is it two weeks before on a calm weeknight, when its just you and yours curled up to the TV to get in a viewing of aCharlie Brown Christmas?

Well, for me I’d argue the latter has a little more magic and warmth to me.  And that being said I thought for the season this year I’d take a look at my top ten favorite TV Characters dressed as Santa.

TV and TV characters have a strange place in our lives.  We know them like friends don’t we?  If we get invested in a series or character, we treat them like friends and family in our mind… and they don’t even exist.

Or do they?

Like Santa, they exist on some other plain.  And like us, they sometimes celebrate the holidays too.  There have been hundreds of TV Christmas specials, hundreds of Christmas episodes of programs, from cheesy and heartfelt to cynical and mean spirited.

I think for me, I connect most with the characters that shouldn’t embody the spirit of Christmas… all decked out in Santa’s garb.

Cosmic Treadmill - Reviewing BATMAN/SUPERMAN VOL. 2: GAME OVER

$

Last week we took on Nightwing, and in these last weeks of the year that celebrate 75 years of Batman, we take a look at Greg Pak's Batman/Superman Vol. 2: Game Over.

Pak's take on the World's Finest team begins its second volume with an art change and video game story then the rest of the book tackles Mongul and son, Jochi, and a battle on Warworld.

Pak is joined by Paul Levitz on some writing duties and the art team is split up between the talents of Brett Booth, Jae Lee, R.B. Silva, Kenneth Rocafort, Philip Tan, Scott McDaniel, Norm Rapmund and Joe Weems.

I did note in my Nightwing review that the art inconsistencies were less than ideal for such an expensive volume. Much the same could be said for this book but Booth's tight and traditional comic pages contrast nicely with the ethereal Jae Lee art of this book. The supporting artists keep it all together as well.

This hardcover volume is a great gift idea for the DC Comics fan in your life this holiday season featuring Batman/Superman Issues #5—9, Annual #1 and the crossover tale for Worlds' Finest #20-21.

ROBIN WILLIAMS On Masks, Comedy and Getting Hairy

$

I still can't believe that Robin Williams is gone. Having grown up with him from the time he guest-starred on Happy Days all the way up to, well, his last films coming out now, I guess I just assumed he would be around forever. But that's the way it is when we take for granted that the people around us, who have seemingly always been there, will continue to just that...be there.

(sniffle)

Thank Thor that the internet does what it does best, provide humanity with little remembrances of the people and performances that help make the loss of those we love a little easier, and in this interview with Lawrence Grobel from 1991, Williams engages in a myriad of topics from the masks that people wear, to how comedy helps us all connect with one another and how, when he was young and had to give up something for Lent, he still got hairy palms.

Yep, he still can make us laugh.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: American Express in the 60s...A Card That Would Get You Out Of Completely Implausible Situations

$

Believe it or not, I actually remember a time when there was no such thing as an ATM. Yep, the only way you could get money (and pay for things like food, beer or comic books) was to physically GO TO THE BANK in order to get some moolah or pay for your stuff with a check.

That was it...those were your options.

Ever see a liquor store on a Friday night before closing? Now superimpose that image onto a bank at 5pm on the same night and you will begin to understand why we weren't in the kind of financial debt we are in now.

WE COULDN'T EASILY GET TO OUR MONEY!!!

And credit cards? Hell, most everyone I knew didn't have one (My mom didn't get one until the 90s when they were handing that shit out like Halloween candy and now she has a wallet full of them). The idea of buying something now and paying for it later was a concept that seemed, well, a bit rich to my parents generation (at least at that time). And considering they were the offspring of people who lived during the Great Depression, it made sense. You bought what you could afford or saved up for those things that you couldn't.

Even the marketing of credit cards implied a lifestyle outside of the social norm. While today's ads are all about purchasing stupid stuff like shoes, movie tickets, or a meal at a diner, the credit card commercials of the 60s and 70s were geared more to the kind of people with a six figure income (and remember, this is back when the median price of a house was $16,500) who could experience the types of implausible issues that the following American Express commercial implies.

And while it's sort of a craptastic reminder that the 1% have always had a different sort of life than the rest of us, it's kind of depressing to realize that today, we, the 99%, spend the kind of money that we would have scoffed at 40 years ago for being outrageous.

There's a lesson in that I think.

THE POP CULTURE MALE PRIVILEGE Or, The Reality of Being Female and Having A F*cking Opinion About Stereotypical "Dude" Stuff

$

By Elizabeth Weitz

As a woman who writes about pop culture I am no stranger to harassment. On a daily basis I receive at least 3 emails filled with hate about my gender, my intelligence and what should be done to my various orifices as a punishment for merely existing in a world dominated by "penises".

And usually, I can laugh it off and delete the emails before they are able to make a mark on my psyche. But after seeing the horror show that my fellow chicks in the gaming world have to go through just to play video games, write about video games or wax philosophically about the concept of gender in video games, it's time to stand up and say "WHAT THE FUCK DUDES?"

I don't think I have to say that threatening to rape me (or any other woman), threatening to physically harm/kill me because I wrote something disparaging about a product/game/movie/person that you like or issuing some kind of a pop culture fatwa on my family because I wouldn't review your shitty web comic is wrong because you guys know it's wrong.

But why does it feel like I have to?

I know that a lot of what has come out in recent months concerning the misogyny in gaming has struck a nerve with the typical basement-dwelling trolls who enjoy swimming in the anonymous muck of their every horrible fantasy and throwing a handful of it onto the web, but the backlash that I see from men who I had always thought of as reasonable human beings is what shocks me the most.

Dismissing the level of harassment that "We who have vaginas" have to deal with and implying that we are being "Overly sensitive" about the issue is tantamount to the belief that we deserve what we get because we aren't "Man Enough" to handle it.

If you really think that I, or any woman who dares to write about video games, comics and pop culture in general deserves to be constantly threatened or maligned for being part of that culture, then sir I must say "FUCK YOU".

Carb Your Enthusiasm: A Not-So Crummy Look at BREAD Cosplay

$

The expression “best thing since sliced bread” comes from the notion that very few things in this world are actually better than sliced bread.

I could not agree with this concept more. I love bread. From bagels to fruit loaves, sourdough to rye; it tastes so good, and works with EVERYTHING.

Which is why dieting of any kind for me is extremely difficult. No matter what unhealthy foods I try to cut back on, I always end up filling the void it leaves behind with bread.

Oh, the things I would do to you.

Of course, gluten isn’t good for any of us and is really bad for some people, and over processed and bleached flour is bad for the environment as well as our own health.

So, about two weeks ago I decided to go ‘cold turkey sandwich’ (removing bread from my diet completely.) It’s hard. I’ve done it before and the first three days drove me crazy, way worse than when I quit smoking.

After that, I still got cravings but it was easier to resist its chewy, doughy, crusty charms.

It lasted for a few months and I was amazed at how quickly I dropped the pounds and how most of the weight I lost was localized to my stomach. I was really happy with the result, so much so that I decided to reward myself with a full fat cream cheese bagel.

And down the slippery slope I went.

There aren’t many things that would make me as happy as this could first thing in the morning.

My most recent attempt at quitting bread failed miserably, because I went to Munich for my birthday last week and remembered how much I love giant soft pretzels and eating bratwurst in sourdough buns. But hey, it was my birthday. I can do what I want.

So now, I’m going to try again and start by getting all this bread love out of my system by devoting this month’s entire cosplay column to the God of Baked Goods.

In bread we trust.

Bread in the world of fashion

Bread-based clothing and characters in popular culture is probably a topic that has never crossed your mind, even in conversations about obscure cosplay.

Baguette moccasins, or loafers if you will.

But believe me, it’s a thing.

THE TOP TEN CARTOONS OF 1937

$

Alright, friends, now we dive into the ten best cartoons released in 1937. This year was a big one in animation largely due to the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney’s groundbreaking animated feature film that proved to the world that animated characters could not only maintain an audience’s interest for 83 minutes, but emotionally involve them as well.

The number of innovations involved in the creation of Snow White are endless, but it isn’t necessary to know what they are to enjoy the movie, which is as creative and charming a fantasy as any committed to the screen.

It’s amazing to think that the Disney studio was churning out a regular schedule of short films during production of the movie, much less that they were releasing some of the finest animated shorts ever made, but they were, and three of them appear on this list. You’ll also see quite a bit from Warner Bros., a studio that really came into its own this year. There’s also a couple of Fleischer classics, and even one from Charles Mintz.

Take a look at this list, and enjoy some brilliant films from one of animation’s most important years:

Oh, The Trauma: A Look At Famous Children's Books

Children are wonder, but not for all the reasons you think. Sure, they are the closest you can come to immortality. But the best part of children isn’t the creation of a new being that will offer you unconditional love and financial burden for 18 years. It’s the fact that there is this little human in which you can inflict your will.

Everything you love about yourself, every hobby you adore, every song, book and comic you ever loved can now be forced upon another being. And the best part is that there is little they can do about it until they become mopey teens.

If you are reading this site, chances are you were a reader as a youngin’.

Like any true geek, your love for sci-fi, computer science, superheroes and/or Japanese culture probably all began with books.

And now, many years later from when you picked up your first copy of The Giving Tree, you want to share your wealth of knowledge and personal tastes with the wee ones in your life.

But before you run out a buy every book from your childhood to give to your son/daughter/niece/nephew/godchild-of-that-drinking-buddy-who-only-chose-you-because-you-made-a-bet-after-all-those-shots-that-one-time, please take time some time to pause and reflect.

Where those books as fantastic as you remember? Were they are innocent?

Perhaps you should go back to read a few before you head out for a night of babysitting and bad choices.

What happens when you combine nine globes, three tires, one billiard ball, one VW Beetle, a set of bowling pins and a variety of everyday objects?

You get a cool way to promote Nat Geo International's "Entertain Your Brain" line of science-minded shows (Brain Games, Science of Stupid and Street Genius) that are returning to TV in 2015.

The Entertain Your Brain stunt plays upon viewers’ fascination with the incredible workings of science and the human mind, from the origins of the Otomi tribe to present day. If you have ever wished with all your heart that you could live in the world of Witches and Wizards, drink a gallon of Butterbeer and attend a ball filled with magical awesomeness, then you're about to shit your pants in utter glee, for there is an actual College of Wizardry that will not only fulfill your every Harry Potter fantasy, it will make your real life seem as though you have been living with, and tortured by, the Dudleys ever since you were one year old.

And yes, you will be attending this college in an actual fucking castle:

Sadly, there is a catch to all this magical wonderment, The College of Wizardry is not a regular school but a LARP event held in the Czocha Castle in Poland and lasting around four days (the first event was held in November with 190 participants with the second event taking place in April 2015).

I know, I cried a bit as well but there's no need for tears, especially when those four days will be packed full of classes, games and events that will have you in Full Nerd mode and ridiculously happy.

If you are interested in signing up for the event (and living out your PG fan fiction fantasies) click HERE.

Oh, and if you are wondering about the cost of attending this college, it's only 280€ (about $345...not including plane tickets and transportation to the event...which is still a hell of a lot less then attending a real college).

After the break is a promo that should get you packing your bags and giving notice to your job.

See you in Dark Arts!
