The Whole Pint Ice Cream Scoop...Binge-Eating Has Never Been So Easy

0
0

In polite society we are taught to hide our gluttony from the eyes of others. At parties, at dinners, at social gatherings of any kind we eat with grace and never load our plate with piles of food (how gauche) no matter how hungry we are.

At home it's another story all together.

How often have I eaten cream cheese off a serving spoon? Downed an entire bag of pretzel chips? Made love to a jar of Nutella with just my mouth?

To be completely honest, it's been a lot.

But marrying our collective gluttony with society's rules of eating decorum is a dream that will never see the light of day...it's just too much to ask for...that is until now.

For Hammacher Schlemmer has come out with a One Pint Ice Cream Scoop ($59.95) that will make shoving an entire pint of Ben and Jerry's Phish Food into your gaping maw socially acceptable.

Shame eating just got even more awesome people.

LOVE ACTUALLY Gets An Honest Trailer

I am not a romantic by any stretch of the word but I will admit that I am completely seduced by the film Love Actually and watch it every Xmas...and every time Hugh grant gets the chubby (although she's not) girl I cry like someone who doesn't have a withered soul.

Am I ashamed by this?

Absolutely.

Thank god Honest Trailers explains why I feel the way I do about the film, otherwise I would have to believe that deep down underneath all of my assholeness lies a real live stereotypical girl.

The Real Way Kim Kardashian Can Break The Internet

0

NOTE: On November 12, 2014, Paper magazine released a photo of professional celebrity Kim Kardashian, stripping out of a dress with her bare, famously gigantic posterior pointed at the camera. Your regularly scheduled Blerd Vision column is on hiatus, as your humble author fell into catatonic shock upon viewing the photo. Luckily, sources close to the Kardashian photoshoot have sent BV this inside look at the conversations that led to The Day The Internet Was Broken.

"I know how we'll break the Internet," Kim Hastreiter, the editor-in-chief of Paper magazine, said in a nondescript conference room.

Kim Kardashian and Jean-Paul Goude, with their entourages, sat with her at the long table.

"Jean-Paul, take some of those striking photos of a fetishistically powerful women of color, her features further enhanced by your technical manipulations, that you love to take. Such excellent work with GraceJones all those years ago.”

“Thank you,” Goude replied.

“Your combination of high and low art, along with celebration and exploitation, are so perfect for these times when no one knows what anything genuinely is any more.”

Hastreiter adjusted her trademark aerodynamic clear-plastic spectacles in deep red, and continued. "Kim, we know your body is your product, so come on board. We kinda love that you embody the nexus of Los Angeles starfucker culture, gossip rags, American culture's labyrinthine concepts of the female gender, and the hate-envy of the classless, idle rich. You're perfect for this.”

“You’re welcome,” Kardashian said. “I’ve worked very hard to cultivate and maintain my brand for more than a decade. I didn’t accomplish that by standing still.”

“Exactly,” Hastreiter said. “We need the next level. You breaking the Internet will be a new legacy item.”

Kardashian reduced her doe-like eyes to slits, feeling the notoriety be so close.

Happy Pre-Thanksgiving friends, because most of you will be traveling to your family's home today (and after 5 seconds of being near your kin, wanting to escape to a dark corner somewhere) I wanted to give you an early Black Friday present...one that doesn't require you to Door Bust your way through a throng of shoppers hell bent on snagging up a $1 DVD of Pitch Perfect.

So here's Home Sweet Home, a heartwarming tale of the Bradley family who are celebrating a happy Thanksgiving on their ranch when an escaped mental patient decides to stop by and help himself to some of their stuffing...both metaphorically and literally.

Oh and just to make this film even better, one of the Bradley's sons (a soldier or something) is called "Mistake"...kind of like what your parents call you when you're not around.

Happy Turkey Day!

Giving Thanks For The MST3K TURKEY DAY MARATHON

In the 1990s and the early 2000s, MSTies celebrated Thanksgiving by binging on the annual Turkey Day Mystery Science Theater 3000 marathon.

Back to back episodes and tryptophan overdoses?

It was a hard day of the year to top.

However, when the Turkey Day marathons ceased… fans were left feeling upset and disconnected from one of their favorite holiday traditions.

This is what we refer to as the Dark Ages of MSTiedom.

In 2013, the Turkey Day marathon returned. And the masses couldn’t have been happier. I would be lying if I said I didn’t tear up when I saw Joel introduce a Mike episode.

This year, the event is back again and we here at FOG! decided to give you a foodcentic bevy of episodes to get you started on your very own marathon.

Happy Thanksgiving, you turkey!

Cosmic Treadmill - Reviewing NIGHTWING V. 5: SETTING SON with a Side Order of GRAYSON

I'm a Bat-family loyalist, reading weekly Bat-titles, even when they fall off the rails a bit (Detective Comics) or even reach into my pockets weekly for some drawn out something or other (Batman Eternal).

I'm also a Batgirl fan and am giving the new ‘’Burnside’ creative team a shot.

One book I personally passed on the New 52 shelves was Nightwing.

Perhaps I didn't like his new costume — but was it really that offensive to my sensibilities?

At any rate, I visited Kyle Higgin's Nightwing Vol. 1 eventually, snaking a deal on the trade.  Not bad...but then another break.

With a ‘Villain’s month’, Forever Evil and Zero Year, the New 52 has an inherent problem with it's regularly programmed books this year.

How does one randomly pick up Nightwing Vol. 5: Setting Son without wanting to pack up and move far away from The New 52 like Grayson himself?

I attempted to do this, and like an acrobat there were highs and lows from this book.

Thankfully, more tricks were landed than fell into the net.

Of Super Heroes and Wrestlers

Super hero comics and professional wrestling have more in common than a lot of people would like to admit.

While super hero comics have managed to raise themselves out of the pop culture ghetto thanks to works like Watchmen and billion dollar movie franchises, professional wrestling still comes with a certain stigma attached to it.

It doesn’t matter that it’s been around for more than a century, that back in the late 90s more people were watching WWE and WCW combined than most NFL football games or that guys like John Cena and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have actual entertainment cred and respect outside of the wrestling ring.

Say you love super hero stories and you’ll likely get a knowing nod. Say the same for professional wrestling, and you’ll likely get a raised eyebrow.

But ask anyone who loves both super heroes and professional wrestling and they’ll tell you that both tickle the exact same parts of the brain.

THEORY OF EVERYTHING (review)

Review by Benn Robbins
Produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner,
Lisa Bruce, Anthony McCarten
Screenplay by Anthony McCarten
Based on Travelling to Infinity by Jane Wilde Hawking
Directed by James Marsh
Starring Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones,
Charlie Cox, Emily Watson,
Simon McBurney, David Thewlis

Eddie Redmayne is perfectly cast and gives an outstanding performance as astrophysicist Stephen Hawking. Academy Award winning director, James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything is based on the memoirs of Jane Hawking entitled Traveling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen.   As his girlfriend and his equally amazing wife she is wonderfully portrayed by Felicity Jones.

The story begins with young Hawking as a Cosmology student at Cambridge University in 1963 and his chance meeting with Jane at a party and their extraordinary relationship and marriage.

Hawking was, as you know, diagnosed with motor neuron disease.

The film becomes a study of both how Professor Hawking deals with and overcomes the body shattering illness as it attacks his body as well as how Jane and Stephen deal with their relationship and try to make it work in a world where this disease usually took it’s victims within 2 years of diagnosis.

Boston Cinegeeks! Win Passes To See BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH in THE IMITATION GAME!

During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of ‘gross indecency’, an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality – little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, THE IMITATION GAME follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives.

For your chance to attend the advanced screening of THE IMITATION GAME on Thursday, December 11th, at 7pm at the AMC Boston Common, click here: http://www.gofobo.com/ForcesImitation

Win GATHERING DARKNESS And FALLING KINGDOMS Prize Pack!

In the three kingdoms of Mytica, magic has long been forgotten. And while hard-won peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest is simmering.

As the rulers of each kingdom grapple for power, the lives of their subjects are brutally transformed…and four key players, royals and rebels alike, find their fates forever intertwined. Cleo, Jonas, Lucia, and Magnus are caught in a dizzying world of treacherous betrayals, shocking murders, secret alliances, and even love.

In AURANOS, privileged Princess Cleo is forced to confront violence for the first time in her life when a shocking murder sets her kingdom on a path to collapse.

In LIMEROS, the king’s son, Magnus, must plan each footstep with shrewd, sharp guile if he is to earn his powerful father’s trust, while his sister, Lucia, discovers a terrifying family secret about her birth that will change everything.

In PAELSIA, rebellious Jonas lashes out against the forces of oppression that have kept his country cruelly impoverished—and finds himself the leader of a people’s revolution centuries in the making.

Witches, if four, are put to death, and Watchers, immortal beings who take the shape of hawks to visit the human world, have been almost entirely forgotten. A vicious power struggle quickly escalates to war, and these four young people collide against each other and the rise of elementia, the magic that can topple kingdoms and crown a ruler in the same day.

And now comes GATHERING DARKNESS, the third book in THE FALLING KINGDOMS series.

The seeds of revolution have been sown…but in Mytica the lust for power reigns supreme.

THE REBELS forge ahead. Princess Cleo slays with sweetness—and a secret that might control Lucia’s magic—as she and vengeful Jonas lead the hunt for the all-powerful Kindred.

THE KRAESHIANS join the fray. Ashur and Amara, the royal siblings from the vast kingdom across the Silver Sea, prove to be just as ruthless as they are charming as they manipulate their way to victory.

THE WATCHERS follow Melenia out of the Sanctuary. They ally, in the flesh, with King Gaius, who vows to use Lucia’s powers to unveil the Kindred.

And which side will Prince Magnus choose, now that he’s been betrayed by everyone he’s ever loved?
And we're giving away a FALLING KINGDOMS Prize Pack that will answer all of these questions.

PHILOSOPHY GEEK: Why We Suffer From Status Anxiety...I Mean, I Don't, You All Like Me Right? Right?

0

My Boss Said If I Can Get 1000 Likes I Won't Be Fired For Being An Asshole...Let's See If We Can Make That Happen

Being born when I was (1974) there was little thought given to status. Sure, I was told that when I grew up I could be anything I wanted, but it became quite clear early on that what I would become was a writer, and not one that would make any money, teach a workshop or rise above the poverty level.

And I was fine with that.

But then came the internet...and blogs...and the various social media outlets where being constantly judged became a way of life and so now, I am in a constant struggle not to cry if someone doesn't enjoy my status update and/or contribution to the virtual world that we all live in.

It's exhausting giving this much of a shit while pretending that I don't.

But the question remains, Why do we care what others (especially those we don't know) think of us? And why does it consume our souls to try and be something we aren't or cannot be?

To answer these deeply philosophical questions, The School of Life has put out a very cool video about our shallowness when it comes to status and why we get sick to our stomach when people don't like us the way we want.

Watch it after the break and feel better...and then, maybe, go look at pictures of kittens for a while...it's better than Prozac.

Video after the break.

What you are about to hear is an ancient instrument used by the Aztec people to psychologically terrorize their enemies when they were about to kick the ass of another tribe.

Now, I know what you are thinking, "Okay Elizabeth, I get that the Death Whistle is shaped like a human skull and all but seriously, how is a "whistle" going to scare a bunch of pumped-up tribal warriors who are used to fighting to the death?"

Well, smart-ass, this is how:

Shrinking Heads – Re-X-Amining X-FACTOR’s Classic X-Aminations

0

In today’s era of ultra-decompressed comic book stories, in which arcs that would have taken maybe 3 issues to tell ten years ago are now being stretched out to twice that or more to fit neatly in a trade, the art of the one-and-done seems increasingly harder to find, particularly in mainstream comics.

Seriously, tell me almost any arc by Bendis that has gone six issues has really needed all six issues. Heck, the first two issues of The Trial of Jean Grey were the exact same story from different perspectives that ended on the exact same point.

When it takes a combined 10 minutes to read two issues, and you still wind up in the same place, it’s time to stop padding things more than a self-conscious teens underwear.

Luckily for us all, THIS guy needs no confidence boost.

But while there have been some fantastic one-and-dones over the years, there’s one that I always go back to, one that I hold as one of the gold standards of the craft, and that’s Peter David’s X-Factor #87, a character driven piece that managed the cap off previous adventures, provide deeper insight into the cast, and then serve as a springboard for the next set of stories, all in one bite-size issue.

THE BIG TEASE – The Best Teaser Trailers Ever

0
0
The launch of the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives more than a year in advance of the movie’s premiere, but it has rekindled fan frenzy and generated more geek discussion than any other montage of eleven incongruous images in cinema history. It’s also made us harken back to those great teaser trailers of yesteryear that touted would-be blockbuster movies a year or so beforehand with merely snippets of the final product to tease us with.

Fans are gladly compelled to watch and re-watch the Episode VII trailer to absorb the intricacies of those eleven mesmerizing shots and pontificate on and debate their meaning—such as: Do the bonus Lightsaber daggers serve as a protective hilt and/or are they used as close-quarters weapons; or are they mere window dressing and/or wouldn’t they present a self-infliction hazard to the user?

While we collate our theories, let’s take a few moments to recap some other terrific teaser trailers for movies that definitely got our blood pumping.

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and the Company of Dwarves. The Dwarves of Erebor have reclaimed the vast wealth of their homeland, but now must face the consequences of having unleashed the terrifying Dragon, Smaug, upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.

As he succumbs to dragon-sickness, the King Under the Mountain, Thorin Oakenshield, sacrifices friendship and honor in his search for the legendary Arkenstone. Unable to help Thorin see reason, Bilbo is driven to make a desperate and dangerous choice, not knowing that even greater perils lie ahead. An ancient enemy has returned to Middle-earth. Sauron, the Dark Lord, has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide—unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends as five great armies go to war.
