Review by Erin Maxwell
Jaybird
Writer: Jaako Ahonen
Illustrator: Lauri Ahonen
Publisher: Dark Horse
Price: $15.00

Take Wuthering Heights, add a dash of The Fall of the House of Usher and pinch of Disney. Mix well and you have Jaybird, the beautifully illustrated foreboding new book from Dark Horse.

Created through crowd-funding by Finnish siblings Jaako and Lauri Ahonen, the modern fable redefines the term “empty nest” as a small bird spends his life locked inside a dilapidated manor, forced to care for his overprotective and manipulative sickly mama bird.

Surrounded by portraits of long-dead feathered ancestors boasting achievements he can never hope to accomplish, the small bird walks the hallowed halls of the eerie estate, which has long been  boarded up to make sure no one can break in...or out.

When Motown 25: Yesterday · Today · Foreveraired on NBC on May 16, 1983, it was an immediate sensation and became one of the most talked about concerts and TV specials ever. In an era before social media, MOTOWN 25 was a true water-cooler event, marking the first time that music fans saw Michael Jackson do the moonwalk (aka: the six seconds that changed the world), in addition to many other iconic performances.

Six months after the broadcast, the show deservedly won a George Foster Peabody Award and an Emmy Award for best Variety Program, but has been unseen for over 20 years…until now. This fall, StarVista Entertainment/Time Life, in conjunction with de Passe Jones Entertainment and Berry Gordy’s West Grand Media, is making this historic show available on DVD for the very first time.

Motown 25 was taped before a live audience and showcased virtually every Motown artist from the company’s inception, including Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, The Supremes, The Jackson 5, The Miracles, The Temptations, Four Tops and many others. The show also featured many guests outside the Motown Records sphere who had been influenced by Motown artists, including Linda Ronstadt, who performed a memorable duet with Smokey Robinson, Billy Dee Williams, Jose Feliciano and British new wave star Adam Ant, who was riding a wave of popularity from MTV exposure. As an added highlight, the historic evening was hosted by Richard Pryor, who was arguably the hottest comedian in the world at the time. A seminal event in pop culture history, this concert event would establish the gold standard for all future televised concert events.

A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES (review)

Review by Benn Robbins
Produced by Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg,
Stacey Sher, Tobin Armbrust, Brian Oliver< BH HHHHB/span>
Based on A Walk Among the Tombstones by Lawrence Block
Adapted Screenplay and Directed by Scott Frank
Starring Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens,
Boyd Holbrook, Sebastian Roché

I am a sucker for Liam Neeson.

Ever since, Darkman, Liam Neeson can do no wrong. Whether it be comedy (High Spirits), historical drama (Michael Collins, Rob Roy), Romantic comedy (Love Actually), Sci Fi (Phantom Menace), and especially action thrillers (Taken, The Gray, Non-Stop). Neeson could be reading the phonebook on screen with a head cold and I am there.

That being said, A Walk Among The Tombstones was not a well made film.

Based on the mystery/thriller novel series of the same name, writer director, Scott Frank, comes up short… or should I say waaay too long.

Never knowing what it wanted to be, A Walk Among The Tombstones, starts off as cool action film with a brain, then turns into a cheesy Silence of the Lambs rip off and then a wanna be Man On Fire, then a glorified CSI episode.

Written and Directed by Kevin Smith
Starring Michael Parks, Justin Long,
Haley Joel Osment, Génesis Rodríguez, Johnny Depp

Kevin Smith.

Kevin Smith…

KEVIN SMITH!!!

I threw away my initial review for Tusk because It made me more angry than I want to admit.

This new review is the product of my trying to explain this film to loved ones and friends and failing miserably.

First of all. Go see this film.

It will piss you off. Not because it is a bad film. But when you find out that it is based on an idea conceived during one of Smith’s own SModcast’s, The Carpenter and the Walrus.

In it, Smith and his long time producer and friend, Scott Mosier were talking about a “Gumtree” ad where a man offered up lodging to anyone for free as long as they dressed up a a walrus. The discussion devolved then evolved from there where they created this fantastical, hypothetical story surrounding this ad.

Tusk is a very well made film.

New Queen Forever CD Collection Brings New Freddie Mercury Songs to Light

Three previously unreleased Queen tracks featuring late singer Freddie Mercury spearhead an exciting new Queen album, Queen Forever, due November 11th 2014 on Hollywood Records.

The tracks include a long anticipated song from Queen and Michael Jackson, “There Must Be More to Life Than This,” a previously unfinished Mercury-Queen track“Let Me In Your Heart Again” originating from the band’s The Works album recording sessions, and a new stripped-down ballad version of Mercury’s first solo hit, his Giorgio Moroder collaboration, “Love Kills.”

The rest of the package brings together Queen hits, classic tracks, and new takes on well-known songs, matched with band recordings Brian May describes as “things that we have collected together that are representative of our growth rather than the big hits” in a collection immaculately assembled by May and Roger Taylor themselves. The tracks are all linked to represent a definitive collection of Queen’s timeless love songs.

Queen Forever is available as a 20-track single CD and as an extended 36-track, two-CD set, and celebrates the extraordinary musical path of one of the world’s greatest rock bands.

A DIFFERENT LENS: A Supercut of Actors' Eyeballs Throughout Film History

$

If you suffer from Ommetaphobia (the fear of eyes) you might want to skip this supercut featuring intense and/or close-up shots of actors' eyeballs set to the song Doctor My Eyes by Jackson Browne. If you don't have a fear of squishy sight bulbs then by all means, feel free to watch and enjoy. And, just so you know, unlike a lot of other supercuts out there, this particular one was created for a reason, in 2012 it was shown at the Society of Camera Operator's Lifetime Achievement Awards to benefit the Vision Center at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, so yeah, a weird short about eyeballs sort of makes sense.

Of course, it's still rather gross because...you know,...eyeballs.

DC Comics' ZERO HOUR: Let's Do The Time Warp Again

Super heroes will set themselves up as society’s moral authority.

Super heroes will intervene in international affairs.

Super heroes will war with alien civilizations without actually being official representatives of any Earthen government.

Super heroes will play fast and loose with the space-time continuum.

Super heroes do all these things and more in the name of serving the greater good, of protecting mankind.

And it’s for that reason that I’ve always scratched my head at the notion that despite playing God on a daily basis, it’s when a fellow hero actually gets the power of God that really rankles the rest of the super hero community.

I first took note of this while reading Zero Hour back in the day.

Fallen Green Lantern Hal Jordan was being presented as the biggest villain the DCU had ever seen and I was ready to fall in line with the JLA and root for his inevitable fall.

But then Hal started talking.

Given his new powers, the world, nay the universe, could be made perfect.

Happiness and contentment could be gifted to everyone in all creation.

Granted, it would take would the utter annihilation of reality but that would instantly be followed by the immediate reboot of all reality with all that promised happiness and contentment to follow.

There is no rhyme or reason for what you are about to see, except to say that it was the 70s and people were mostly high back then. Which is the only plausible excuse I can think of for why anyone would think a weird crossover involving a large hick puppet from a popular kid's show would help drive up the ratings for a TV series about the California Highway Patrol.

WTF is right.

MY TOP 5 Films at TELLURIDE 2014

The Telluride Film Festival is the hidden gem of film festivals.

Even some folks in the industry don’t know what it is even though it’s been going strong for 41 years and has honored people like Francis Ford Coppola, Peter O’Toole, Werner Herzog and Chuck Jones.

I love going to Telluride partly because of the program (which typically ends up containing lots of award winners), but also because the town itself is so beautiful. A tiny mining town in a box canyon in the San Juan Mountains? I’m there!

These are the five best new films that I saw at the festival this year.

LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES: 'Squirm'...Hungry Worms Try to Devour A Bunch of Georgians...Probably Heard They Taste Like Deep Fried Chicken

Squirm is a horrible little movie about an electrical storm that somehow turns normal worms into flesh-craving annelids. These crazed worms terrorize the local population by burrowing their way into the face flesh of the Southerns and, I don't know, eating them or something. The movie became sort of a cult classic, not only because of its appearance on MST3K, but because it showed up a lot on TV after the Braves games on TBS in the 80s and drunk people would watch it.

You should probably do the same and drink before viewing the flick...it can only help.

Metaphysical Neuroma #0

Writer: Attila Adorjany

Artist: Attila Adorjany

Publisher: 600 Pound Gorilla

Price: $0.99 – Digital

Okay, so picture yourself falling down a hole. While you are falling the walls around you start to glow and show you your life. As they show you what you have seen and not remembered; your memories themselves divulge their own secrets that rip and tear at who you are inside.

Yeah, that’s Metaphysical Neuroma. If you go out and get this; get ready to be blown away.

This is one of the greatest comics, no, one of the greatest things I have ever read.

I don’t know why it elicited such high emotion in me but I was visibly elated while reading.

The story is based on a scrolling mechanic that works well in the PDF version I read. I don’t think this comic would work that well in print but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to put my hands all over it.

Okay, on to the story! Our unknown lead character is dying or so we are lead to believe. In his dying moments he is watching his life in the form of spliced together movie sequences and airline emergency documentation. His brain tells him that he can break up his life into three moments. We barely see what is going on as we are led down the rabbit hole of images that help forge the interesting brain we are now part of. As we get to the end of this book the pages lose their color and it just kind of fades away.

It was heartbreaking and awe inspiring at the same time. It takes balls to end a comic like that.

Only I hope he meant to end it that way. This story is so strong that even reading it again I came to the same conclusion. It’s near perfect.

Attila has a style all his own and he shines beautifully here.

There are just so many images that are captivating and relevant. His choice of paneling and colors will honestly grab your heart and squeeze. The images popped off my screen like nothing I have ever seen before. The way he chose to have images overlap their own panels and manipulate what you are looking it, while trying to figure out what the hell is going on. The information in this story feels real and I have to think that some of this comes from Attila’s life and it connected with me on a ton of levels.

This comic is what I have been waiting for, for a very long time. It’s fresh and unlike anything I have ever read before. This is what the comic book industry should try and emulate.

Go to Comixology right now and search for this comic. It is only a dollar. I can’t stress this enough, it is more than more your time and money to read this comic. Support the cause and I will be share this with everyone I meet.

Score: 6 out of 5.

Get Your Halloween Started Early With This Remote Control Tarantula

$

We've all seen that video of a dog dressed as a giant spider chasing people down a street until that person shits themselves, and while I totally approve of any prank that can cause panic and/or heart attacks, there's very little chance that you or I can pull that off, especially if your dog is as big of an asshole as mine is (seriously, he doesn't do anything interesting unless you consider room-clearing farts a talent).

So why leave a chance to scare people to death up to a canine when, with just a handful of batteries, you can have an RC tarantula scurry out from underneath a couch and make your mother wet her pants.

With Halloween just around the corner, now is the time to start planning ways to freak people the fuck out and there are very few things scarier than a giant spider coming after you.

Unless of course, it's your boss coming to your cubicle to "Talk about your Performance".

Now, that's terrifying.

The Top 10 Autumn-Related Songs To Get You In The Mood For Sweater Weather

$

I'm an autumn girl. I love it when the weather gets nice and cool and I can finally slip into a baggy sweater, hiding my beer gut from the world. I also enjoy spending those chilly nights wrapped up in a flannel blanket out on my deck, drinking hot apple cider topped off with brandy and listening to tunes that remind me of the change of season while my neighbor screams for me to turn the volume down from his bathroom window.

You know, sometimes it's the little things in life that make you the happiest (and I'm referring to pissing off my neighbor here).

To help get you in the mood for longer nights and cooler days, check out my picks for the top ten autumn-related songs after the break and, because I am frakking awesome, I've also included a recipe for Apple Pie Shots that will help make the passing of summer easier for you.

Yeah, good music and Apple Pie shots...I'm totally ready for Fall.

5 Things I Want To See From GOTHAM

Written by Steven Scott

As a Bat-fan for life, I’ve been anticipating the arrival of Gotham ever since it was announced last year. TV was my first introduction to the world of Batman in the form of the Adam West series and while there have been multiple iterations of Batman on TV in animation since, it’s exciting to finally see these characters return to a live-action series.

Of course this is a decidedly different take on the city that produced Batman as by now everyone knows it’s a pre-Batman Gotham City. Instead, a young James Gordon will take the lead, putting the focus more on the Gotham’s police force as well as the criminal underworld. Joining Gordon is Detective Harvey Bullock, who was initially brought to my attention through the classic Batman: The Animated Series, and has been one of my favorite characters in the DCU ever since. Not everything in Gotham is black and white and Bullock lives definitively in the grey, not opposed to bend the rules to get results.

In anticipation of the series, I decided to take a look back at the award winning comic series, Gotham Central, which also puts the focus on Gotham’s finest (and not so finest) by the dynamic writing duo of Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka. While the show Gotham is not based on the comic series, it shares many characters and will hopefully borrow many elements from it since this is a series that many have claimed for years should get the serialized TV treatment.

Here’s what Gotham Central got right that I would love to see brought to life on screen in Gotham:
