Technology in Gaming

As technology evolves at a continually rapid rate, its application in the world of gaming continues to be used in new and innovative ways.

With pre-established properties, technology allows games to be reimagined for new audiences.

Electronic Monopoly

One of the most iconic board games of all time didn’t escape a technological upgrade. Cash has been replaced with bank cards and utilizing the handheld banking unit, players can check their cash balance immediately and track cash electronically as you buy properties, pay bills, bet online or collect gifts and debts from your opponents. One of the claims of the game is that bills are paid quicker and property can be purchased immediately. A huge time saver, considering some player’s can take up to minutes to settle their affairs.

Well, the dog days of summer are finally upon us but to counteract the depression that comes with knowing that the season of sun and warmth is slowly dissipating, I am providing the world with a video of a bunch of cats moshing to some heavy-ass music.

Let's hope that the mere act of a bunch of kittehs swarming an animal hoarder will somehow extend summer so I can finally finish weeding my yard.

MUSIC VIDEO MONDAY: The Poor House- Billy Bob Thorton & The Boxmasters

I'm not sure how much I actually like Billy Bob Thorton's country/rockabilly band The Boxmasters, but for whatever reason I can't stop listening to them...seriously, it's become an everyday thing now. I once tried to analyze just what it was about the music that soothed me, but the only thing I could come up with is that it had to be subliminally coated with Valium...that, or I am secretly in love with Billy Bob Thorton...or, I'm about to have a stroke.

I don't know, just listen to their song The Poor House after the break and let me know if you have any strong reactions to it, ' cause I'm staring to get really worried about my mental health.

LIFE AFTER MANSON: Patricia Krenwinkel's Emotional Interview About Her Life Behind Bars

On August 9, 1969 a twenty-two year old Patricia Krenwinkle participated in the murders of Sharon Tate, Wojciech Frykowski, Abigail Folger, Jay Sebring, and Steven Parent at the behest of Charles Manson. She was also responsible for the torture and murder of Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary the following night.

45 years later, Krenwinkle speaks to the New York Times about her role in the brutal murders and looks back at the woman she used to be when she was dazzled by Charles Manson.

Its a fascinating look at the power of brain-washing and how someone can be manipulated into doing something so reprehensible.

Reminiscing About a Hell of a Guy(ver)

Apparently, card counting is just as frowned upon in Reno as it is in Vegas.

So, after a hard weekend of excess and forgettable monetary purchases, I’m getting a ride home from a really good friend from way back; James.  Mr. White has rescued me from quite a few situations: across Tijuana to Barrow and in between, he’s been top notch.

Hell, this true-blue Texan took time out of his wedding night to kick the crap out of a drug dealer that “thought I owed him money.”

He’s as solid as people get.

Anywho, on our way back to LA, I tell him about the assignment due by Sunday for Forces of Geek and the fact that, if I don’t come through, the editors will sue my ass into oblivion.

Right away he gets it and brings up the time after WrestleMania-something-or-another when we watched a little anime (drunk on his parent’s peppermint schnapps).

It instantly brings me back to the early 90’s when “anime” was a dirty word spoken in the alleys of Little Tokyo.  Where if you wanted to buy a quality anime movie, it was either Akira, Ninja Scroll or one of them Appleseed movies.

Jeff snatches the cigarette from my mouth before I can light it in his car and says to me, “Why not write about that Guyver flick; you know, that movie was sick as hell.”

“Anime?” I say.

Jeff goes, “Whatever it’s called, that was pretty sweet.”

So I will…

Check out what I checked out this week.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

RoboCop #2
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Carlos Magno
Colorist: Marissa Louise
Letterer: Ed Dukeshire
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Price: $3.99

RoboCop was the first R-Rated movie I indulged in, long before I was deemed to be the appropriate age by the Motion Picture Film Association of America.   Ah, babysitters can be a child’s best friend.

I’ve always had an affinity for the story because of how it doesn’t take itself too seriously while taking everything else seriously to produce the story of a cybernetic law enforcement officer.

Jumping from the silver screen to the page, the majority of RoboCop comic books are horrible because they fail to capture, at least, the core essential elements of the titular character.

I stress "at least" because there are other items in the series that create a consistent mythos for the tragic and heroic tale of Officer Alex J. Murphy.

Joshua Williamson gets it.

Instead of putting a completely different spin on the character, or trying to make things better or worse for the sake of shock value, Williamson brings us everything we loved about the first film while cleverly creating a narrative filled with action, suspense, mystery and intrigue.

While RoboCop is the hot commodity, Old Detroit is a character unto itself. Without it, essentially, there is no story. Williamson injects a lot of gratuitous violence and civil unrest, all stemming from the regular mood of the city which is inflated by a new gun control law.

There are a couple of new characters introduced, and one of them operates on both sides of the law, which makes me wonder if OCP knows this or simply doesn’t care.

The dynamic between Murphy and Lewis is spot on and brings in some new elements that could put an end to their partnership. Their reaction to this possibility was both mysterious and hand-to-the-head obvious at the same time because while the human factor made you think one thing, prime directives called for another. There is also the tease of serious danger coming down the pipe for Robo as the baddie notices things about his abilities that could be used against him.

Carlos Magno does a phenomenal job of making the city look like a disgusting cesspool that is beyond saving. There is a chase scene in the middle of the book that perfectly shows how in sync the creators in this book are. A suspect escapes and RoboCop says he will pursue on foot. Chalk that up to things that make you go hmmm because he can’t run, power walks at best, no jet pack, and the suspect has a head start. What’s a RoboCop to do?

Well, jump off the roof onto the suspect, of course! That image will have me thinking for days because he is the absolute last person I’d ever want diving after me from a great distance. Geez, I would beg for my Miranda Rights before he could hit the ground.

When most people see a RoboCop comic book on the shelf, that sense of immediate recognition takes place, and is usually followed by memories of previous comic incarnations, leading to the buyer passing on the product. I really hope that Williamson and company can keep the established tone consistent because it will go a long way in making this a series that stands out.

They are off to a great start and hopefully, you will hand this book to the cashier while screaming “I’ll buy that for a dollar.”

Score: 4 out of 5

Bring Your D & D Gaming Into Adulthood With Geek Chic's Gorgeous Gaming Tables

$

As a teenager, it was perfectly couth to play Dungeons and Dragons on a fold-out table in your basement, but if you are still setting up game night on your mom's old gin rummy table at 40, you've got a serious problem...Seriously, why not bring a bit of adulthood to your game night by investing in a piece of furniture that will not only look as if it belongs to an adult, it will also make your table top gaming experience seem a bit more elegant (and really, there's nothing wrong with adding a bit of aristocratic opulence to your Friday night nerdfest if you ask me).

So, without further ado, may I introduce The Sultan by Geek Chic:

This top-of-the-line gaming table may have a base price of $12,950 (and, with additions, it goes up from there) but with craftsmanship that will last a lifetime, think of it as The One Table That Will Rule Them All.

The Sultan will easily make six to ten of your gaming friends wet their pants with personal Player Stations that feature flip-down desks and secret drawers (while the GM station is larger- as it should be), Cup Holders, a Game Vault that will keep your precious game and maps safe from prying eyes when not in use, plus tons of other added intricacies that will fill your pants with a nerd boner or the ecstasy squirts.

After the break are more pictures of The Sultan...you might want to prepare yourself for untold beauty.

Weird PSAs From the 1970s Predicted Government Spying

$

After Watergate and the Vietnam War, the American people were, well, sort of paranoid and upset about what our government was doing. In 1974 director Godfrey Reggio, an experimental filmmaker, made a series of PSAs for the New Mexico Civil Liberties Union about the various dangers that the Big Brother posed to all of us. Unfortunately, the ads were a bit abstract for most viewers, but perhaps the confusing nature of them made for a total freak out that got the point of government spying across.

All I know, is that 40 years later, the NSA is listening to me bitch about my bowel issues to my mom.

So I guess Reggio was right...now, if you excuse me, I need to burn my phone and computer and go back to snail mail.

Remembering Robin

By Erin Maxwell

The loss of Robin Williams is great. A man of immeasurable genius whose rapid-fire comedic stylings defined new generations of comedians. Regarded as a gentle soul by peers and all those who had the honor to work with him, he was a giant in the industry who will be greatly missed.

Before box-office hits, Academy accolades and cross-dressing nannies, Williams was a regular of the small screen. He was a staple of late ‘70s and early ‘80s comedies, be it sketch comedy shows, sitcoms or Saturday morning schedules. Before he landed the plum role of Mork, Williams has a known comedic talent who spread his skills amongst primetime shows.

Here is a brief look at the early TV years of Robin Williams:

Watching a music video of YMCA by The Village People is a weird and wonderful experience, but watching the same video without the added benefit of any actual music sort of feels like you are peeking into the soul of someone suffering from schizophrenia.
