Machinima Unleashes DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION

$

Based on the video game Deus Ex Human Revolution, the film dives into the world of Adam Jensen, a serif industries' security consultant that gets augmented after an incident that almost took his life away. Although the film doesn't follow the narrative of the game exactly, it remains true to the theme while focusing on the relationship between Adam Jensen, and his ex girlfriend Megan Reed, a scientist hand picked by Serif Industries to head Cybernetic Augmentations. Megan is taken by the Illuminati and is asked to assist them in turning on a mysterious device but she refuses to cooperate. Jensen has been looking for Megan since she was kidnapped and has finally pinpointed her location. Adam faces a complication that he did not account for; Yelena Federova, an Augmented assassin is at the facility where Megan is being held. The film also taps, even if briefly, into Adam's mind and the struggle he must face on daily basis.

Square Enix's critically-acclaimed third Deus Ex game, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, has been an inspiration for many forms of media including a DC Comic Book series. While people continue to wait on word of the Deus Ex feature length movie, Dcode Films founder Moe Charif gives the game live-action treatment with an all-new short that airs on Machinima Prime. Charif also plays Adam Jensen in the program, which focuses on Jensen's relationship with his ex-girlfriend Megan Reed.
Check it out after the jump.

'THE ENCHANTED POT' Musical/Corn Syrup Advertisement Is All About Helping The Ladies In the Kitchen...Isn't Retro Sexism Adorable?

When I got married to my significant bother a few years ago my main concern was not "Am I up to the challenge of cooking him pleasing and nutritious meals?", but how many fucking forms do I have to fill out in order to obliterate my past self so that I could take on his stupid last name.

But I guess times have certainly changed since this incredibly sexist advert was created by the Karo Syrup company back in 1962. Judging by the deep suffering that this "wife" had to deal with when it came to cooking, you'd have thought that dumping a package of hot dogs into boiling water was akin to suddenly being asked to split the atom. To further add insult to injury, it is pretty damn clear that that the best way to become successful in the kitchen (and make your husband glad he picked you) is not through "messing around with random ingredients"  but via cooking lessons taught by a male magical pot (oh yeah, Mother's Little Helpers were not a key ingredient in this walking nightmare, no sir) whose baritone voice was just as apt to talk down to the wife as it was in making sure she realized that ground beef was a staple food.

Oh, the memories.

Sexism and Karo Syrup after the break ladies.

Survive the ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE Through Chemistry...Oh, And Death Cologne

$

Chemist and Zombie Junkie Raychelle Burks would like to make sure that you survive the undead apocalypse (even though we all know you will probably be one of the first people eaten) and in order to do so you won't have to rely on cunning, skill or fighting your way through the throngs of walking goo bags to stay alive, instead, you can live by dousing yourself in her cologne, Death Scent, a concoction that mimics the smell of rotting flesh.

Ok, yeah, the smell will keep zombies from snacking on your appendages, thus allowing you to breathe in-and-out for a bit longer, but there's also a good chance that it will also keep the living from wanting to bunker down with you in some basement, so, in the end, you'll probably be one lonely bastard when civilization crumbles... life sucks, get used to it.

When it comes to survival, it's a zombie-eat-human world pal and you best make do.

Check out all the necessary ingredients needed to create such a "Cologne" after the break.

Rewriting ‘Game of Thrones’

$

Game of Thrones is about to find itself in a unique place among TV adaptions — running out of source material while there are still many more episodes left in the series. The upcoming season not only brings us to the end of Book 3 (out of five published books), but starting last season, the show had already begun to use elements from Book 4, and this season’s previews clearly show material from Book 5 will be utilized.

But this is really a lucky break for the show and potentially fans of the book — to some extent it’s going to force showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss to chart their own course.

The next two books are by far the weakest of the five, primarily weighed down by the introduction of a huge slew of new characters. So many pages are devoted to them that they squeeze out who have been the primary characters so far. Tyrion, for instance, doesn’t even appear in Book 4. After three tightly written novels, George R.R. Martin felt the need to try and tell us what else has been going in Westeros, which apparently, was quite a bit.

Despite the fact that Benioff and Weiss have been told by Martin how the book series ends, they should write a whole new narrative for the show.

Or in other words, create an alternate version of Game of Thrones.

“Yo, Joe!” - That’s what you’ll hear like the shot heard round the world tomorrow at 11 or noon when the shops open up in your town.

In fact, here in nearby Somerville, Tim Finn of Hub Comics is giving away 200 copies of this six dollar book for free today! All coming from a love for the ninjas, soldiers, tanks, reptilian villains and military banter sensei Larry Hama has given us since the first comic series (there have been many since) in the G.I. Joe franchise!

My heart fluttered in anticipation of reading the book and suddenly I was 12 years old again!

This double-sized issue has a climactic standoff between our arrogant and whiney Cobra Commander and top notch Joes, including original Joe Coulton (played by Bruce Willis in G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

There is one page, near the end of the book that is fan service to us loyal RAH fans. Joe Headquarters The Pit is given a reboot and boy howdy is it cool.

IDW even reenlisted the letters page, ‘Postbox: The Pit’, where a young Clay N. Ferno was first published way back in 1991 (Issue #110, Saw-Viper)! You best believe it, I wrote in a gushing Postbox letter immediately. If I’m in the Joe letter page twice in my life, I’m dropping my microphone and walking away!

Happy Anniversary to Larry, Herb Trimpe, and new artist SL Gallant (and of course all of the great RAH artists, too many to mention here)! Dinner Wednesday: frozen pizza, grape soda, and little chocolate covered donuts!

HBO Home Entertainment Announces 'TRUE DETECTIVE'

Traumatize Your Children Through Mark Twain's 'THE MYSTERIOUS STRANGER' Claymation...It'll Be Fun (Valium Not Included)

Mark Twain Introduces Satan to the Kiddos
In 1985 Will Vinton Studios (the people behind the California Raisins) released a Claymation feature called The Adventures of Mark Twain, consisting of a series of shorts based on Twain's stories (The Diary of Adam and Eve, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Mysterious Stranger, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven.).

While that might sound wonderful and awesome to anyone who is a fan of Twain's, one those aforementioned animated shorts (The Mysterious Stranger) is easily the winner of the creepiest mother fucking story ever committed to film (and yes, there is certainly a degree of WTF in each and every one of these animations), and stars Satan (?), Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher (this is like a dream I once had).

To understand what you are about to see it is imperative to know that the plot of the film revolves around the three literary-based children and Mark Twain travelling throughout time on an airship in search of Halley's Comet (Twain was born the year the comet appeared in 1835 and felt connected to it throughout his life. He died on April 21, 1910, the day after the reappearing Comet had reached the point closest to the sun) so yeah, all of it is fairly weird and schizophrenic and "WHATTHEHELLISGOINGONHERE" but this short, this is the one that will scar your children forever...the kind of scarring that will result in years of therapy and psychotropic drug usage.

Wanna taste of madness?

Check out The Mysterious Stranger after the break.

SECRET LIFE OF HEROES: Spider-Man Likes Nutella? Awesome!

The art of Grégoire Guillemin has been popular for a while now and sure, you've probably seen his Lichtenstein-ish works written about before on the web and magazines, but art this appealing bears repeating (even in our Already-Saw-It-Let's-Move-On world). Besides, there's something quite tantalizing about witnessing our favorite Superheroes in vulnerable, private moments which makes them seem, well, almost human at times.

And seriously, how could you not enjoy the irony of a contemplative Hulk reading a Robert Louis Stevenson classic on a self-imposed rampage break?

While the subject of these pieces reflect a certain comic book/pop culture-centric ideologue, there is a deeper meaning behind them. While we may read or view these demi-god-like characters as infallible or super-human, there are still aspects of them that reflect our own humanity, and it is within these captured voyeurisms that we are allowed to see that aspect of their character, that small second of mortal-ness that removes the burden of their responsibility and makes them just like us.

And therein lies the wonderful reason art like Guillemin is so important to those of us who are deeply in love with pop culture, it validates our insane belief that there is meaning in loving characters like Wonder Woman, Batman and yes, even the Hulk. So check out some more of Guillemin's work after the break, it's worth your time.

Wanna See A F*cked Up Animation About A Man Married to A Hen? Of Course You Do

Igor Kovalyov is probably best known for his character design and directing work on The Rugrats Movie and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters but in this short, Hen, His Wife, it's less about appealing to the kiddos and more about, "Hey, Let's Fuck With the Parents".

A freaky tale about a man unaware that he is married to an domesticated anthropomorphic hen until a visiting friend calls "Fowl", this short flick manages packs more WTF and Holy Shit into it's 12:46 than most after-school specials do in 45 minutes (not to mention this short has a centipede-like dog with a human face...I don't remember that showing up in The Amazing Cosmic Awareness of Duffy Moon.

If you're interested in be dumbfounded by insanity, then check out Hen, His Wife after the break, but be aware, this animation has zero dialog so, yeah, it's going to feel even weirder.

Representations Of Women In The Halo-verse

Two days after the release date in 2012, I completed Halo 4.

As is the case with most Halo titles, the campaign felt a little short but I still enjoyed it and I played as much multiplayer as I could (including Spartan Ops - which by the way, I love).

I raved to everyone about how amazing the game was and no surprise, being the fan girl that I am, I recommended it to everyone.

So two years on, after some reflection upon going back to it (because, on my lowly wage I still can't afford a next-gen console, leaving me no option but to replay games *sob*), I had a stark realisation about the way women are represented in the game. It struck me that there are only two representations of female characters in the Halo franchise and neither of them were positive;

Dean Martin's hit variety show was in its ninth year in 1974 when the staff went into a huddle to figure out what to do for that season's finales. Somebody yelled out, "Why don't we toast a bunch of big stars?" The word "toast" suddenly turned to "roast" and the whole room tingled with anticipation of what that could mean.

What began as a ratings booster for the final season of "The Dean Martin Show" then evolved into "The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts," an eagerly awaited franchise of regular NBC television specials that targeted the biggest names in the world of entertainment and beyond. From Bob Hope to Muhammad Ali, Johnny Carson to Lucille Ball, Gov. Ronald Reagan to Redd Foxx (roasted twice), anybody with a thick skin and a good agent was fair game, and the specials proved so popular that the top-rated series ran for nine years. This March, fans of Old Hollywood, the Golden Age of Television and Classic Comedy can celebrate the bashing and basting of some of the greatest performers and personalities of the 20th century with THE DEAN MARTIN CELEBRITY ROASTS: FULLY ROASTED.

Barry Goldwater, Suzanne Somers, George Washington (portrayed by Jan Leighton), Dennis Weaver, Ralph Nader, Gabe Kaplan, Redd Foxx, Hugh Hefner and Zsa Zsa Gabor. And, the list of roasters throwing zingers at the men and women of the hour is every bit as impressive: Milton Berle, Red Buttons, Phyllis Diller, Bonnie Franklin, Rich Little, Abe Vigoda, Jimmie Walker, Orson Welles, Jack Benny, Dom DeLuise,Henry Fonda, Ruth Buzzi, Wilt Chamberlain, Howard Cosell, Billy Crystal, Gene Kelly, LaWanda Page,Jackie Mason, Jimmy Stewart, Shelley Winters, Bob Newhart, Carroll O'Connor, Jack Klugman, Johnny Bench, and many others. FOG!'s own Andrez Bergen is looking to turn his well-received novel, Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat, into a Graphic Novel via Kickstarter.

If you are unfamiliar with this critically-lauded 2011 noir novel, let me break it down for you: Cut to Melbourne, Australia--the most glamorous city in the world. It also happens to be the only one left standing, but nevermind that, we're there now and I'd like you to meet your narrator, a certain Floyd Maquina, a likable chap with one hell of a story to share. See, the powers that be are knuckling down on the Deviant menace that plagues the city, and our boy Floyd's unknowingly got himself in the thick of it. Cue guns, intrigue, kidnappings, conspiracy and all sorts of general mayhem that make for cracking good headlines. Does Floyd stop the bad guys? Does he get the girl? Does he make Humphrey Bogart proud?

Heavily influenced by the Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Neville Shute, Philip K. Dick, Ray Bradbury, Graham Greene, and... filmmakers Satoshi Kon, Carol Reed, John Huston and Akira Kurosawa...you know you are going to enjoy the story.

But to help turn TSMG into a graphic novel, Bergen (with collaboration from Fée Romney) needs your support, so check out the pitch video after the break and then head over to their Kickstarter page to get all the juicy details on backer gifts and to get a look at some of the graphic novel pages.

Can't you help a writer out?

Welcome to the world of the Goblin Emperor, a vividly imagined
fantasy of court intrigue and dark magics in a steampunk-inflected world . . .

The youngest, half-goblin son of the elvish Emperor has grown up in exile, isolated and ignored by the glittering world of the elvish court. After his mother’s death he is prepared to spend the rest of his days in a dreary swamp – until an airship crash kills his father and brothers, leaving him the next heir.

Hastily pulled into the role of the next emperor, he is utterly unprepared for the endless intrigue and complex machinations of life in the capital. Even worse, it soon emerges that the airship crash was no accident – somebody assassinated the emperor, and now he stands between the ambitious plotter and the throne. Surrounded by enemies and potential assassins, an alienated child must step up to the throne and assume power he never asked for.

Katherine Addison brings together fantasy elements, from steampunk airships to the labyrinthine societal complexity of historical empires, to create a world of depth and originality. Under the byzantine tale of political intrigue lies an engaging core: craftily rendered, vulnerable characters that will draw the reader into the world of the Goblin Emperor.

Review by Benn Robbins
Produced by Al Ruddy, Bill Block, Paul Hanson,
Joe Roth, Palak Patel, Alex Ott
Written by David Ayer, Skip Woods
Directed by David Ayer
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington,
Olivia Williams, Terrence Howard, Joe Manganiello,
Harold Perrineau, Martin Donovan, Max Martini,
Josh Holloway, Mireille Enos

This may be one of the best Arnold Schwarzenegger films I have seen in a very long time.

This is, in some way Arnie’s Unforgiven.

I know. This is a very bold statement. But I am going to explain why I feel this way.

Is this film as good as Unforgiven?

Not in the least bit.

Written and directed by David Ayer, the writer of Training Day and the writer/director of End of Watch, Sabotage is a very gritty and dark action film.

It pushes the boundaries of the genre.

The over the top violence and I will go so far to say gory imagery are both used to shock but also to sober the viewer to a world where it is the norm to see heads explode and people being riddled with bullets on prime time TV nowadays. The violence is not done in a way that it becomes almost comical, such as in Stallone’s Rambo (2008) or Snyder’s 300 (2006) it is more visceral and stark. Almost hyperrealistic.
