Just Cos(play)

In our modern lives, which in part, are founded on hours of web-based procrastination; cosplay is a term we read more and more. But do you actually know what it means?

Well of course you do, it’s built right into the name! Costume +role play = cosplay. Right?

Yeah, that’s kind of it. But does that mean it’s limited to the realms of live action role play? Or is that another beast entirely? What does that make Halloween? What about when folks put stupid clothes on their dogs?

It seems to be that as soon as someone wears clothes that are a little out of the ordinary, people get confused. But the truth is that, the dividing lines between the categories and sub categories aren’t just blurry to those of us that habitually stick to jeans and a tee. I myself am one of the jeans and tee crowd.

But in my line of work as a model and my overlapping geeky interests, it’s a pool I regularly dip my toe in.

ROBOCOP (review)

$

Review by Clay N Ferno
Produced by Marc Abraham, Eric Newman
Screenplay by Joshua Zetumer
Based on Characters Created by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner
Directed by José Padilha
Starring Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton,
Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley,
Michael K. Williams, Jennifer Ehle, Jay Baruchel

While certainly not set in a desperate and dystopian Detroit of the future, the new Robocop movie is full of huge movie stars, video game action and a compelling storyline to take the franchise in a more modern direction.

Joel Kinnaman stars as cop Alex Murphy, and dons more than just a metal suit this time around to become a Robocop out for vengeance. Samuel L. Jackson is news anchor Pat Novak, Gary Oldman is Dr. Dennett Norton who brings Murphy back to life with his research funded by Omnicorp’s Raymond Sellars played brilliantly by Michael Keaton.

Rounding out the cast are main squeeze Abbie Cornish as wife Clara and Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire, The Wire) as cop partner Jack Lewis.

The movie opens with Novak on a futuristic sound stage newsroom with 3D displays of Omnicorp’s robot army patrolling the streets of the world. The presumably right-winged newscaster pleads with Americans to overthrow the government’s The Dreyfus Act to let these OCP robots, including the familiar ED-209s to roam American streets as well. Senator Dreyfus (Zach Grenier) opposes the move for obvious reasons—robots have no feelings.

On the eve of the RoboCop remake, I went back to the original, now available in an Unrated Director's cut on Blu-ray, remastered with 4K technology.

It's been a while since seeing the film in its entirety, and I was really surprised how well it not only holds up, but represents a very different time in the history of Action Hollywood Blockbusters.

Here are a few other things that surprised me while watching the new Blu-ray release, courtesy of some great bonus features...

DOWNTON ABBEY Takes a Conservative Turn

I admit that I’m an unlikely fan of Downton Abbey.

Period costume dramas involving storylines about unrequited love are not usually my thing. But the show’s examination of plutocrats and socioeconomics are pretty timely.

While the show has always been a bit romantic and even quixotic about the nobility of the British aristocracy, the current seasons seems to have bought into this delusion. And what’s really turning me off is how much it is pitting the servants against us in its messaging.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead.

ON THE FLOOR: An Epic Representation Of How The Internet Can Be A Malevolent Thing

$

Whenever someone begins to speak in earnest tones about how the Internet is filled with darkness and evil I always shake my head and and wonder what the hell kind of websites they go to (I'm seriously interested since my browser history looks like a twelve year old girl's ode to Ryan Gosling and it would be nice to add a bit more, well, psycho-ness to it).

But after seeing IceJJFish's rap/hip-hop video for his song On the Floor, I completely understand where they are coming from. I'm not quite convinced that it's presence on the web equals a malevolence that could very well destroy humankind, but there is definitely a chance that it could maim it in a way that it would have to go on disability in order to make ends meet.

Now if you will excuse me, I feel the need to do penance for all the times I snagged pictures of old boyfriends off of Facebook.

What Falling From A Plane And Then Being Eaten By A Pig Might Look Like

$

The following footage is from a Go-Pro camera that was apparently dropped from a plane full of skydivers and then landed in a bunch of pig shit where a huge porcine creature attempted to eat it, which, interestingly, is kind of similar to a dream I once had where I fell out of a building and was then slowly devoured by razorbacks. Now, at the time, I was reading Hannibal by Thomas Harris (it had just come out and my grandma and I were binge reading it together...the woman enjoyed horror, let me tell you) and so I was pretty susceptible to the whole "Being eaten by pigs thing".

Of course, if you are into dream interpretation, pigs are seen as over-indulgent or greedy so I guess being eaten by one means that I am some kind of asshole consumed by the need to own stuff.

Nice.

Watch the video after the break, I need to seriously re-evaluate my life.

F*CK YOU SNOW...Seriously, F*ck You A Lot

$

Right now I am watching yet another foot of snow fall from the sky in a blizzard-like fashion while my neighbor across the street (whom I can barely see due to the thickness of the snowfall) has gone mad and is trying to beat back the fluffy carnage with a snow blower so that he won't have to shovel(which he will, there's no way this fight against mother nature is going to end well for him).

That madness, I fear, has infected everyone where I live and I wouldn't be a bit surprised at all if one of us (I include myself in this prophecy) finally cracks all together and kills half the home owners on the street, resulting in a macabre tableau of "snow people" (all Calvin and Hobbes-style) made from the bloody corpses of their neighbors. In fact, I almost welcome it...for I am totally done with Winter.

Now, there are others, those who live in the warmth and the sun all year long who look upon the falling crystallization of rain and see not oppressiveness and isolation, but beauty and quiet, and for that I should slap them with all my might. For once I was one of them. Oh yes, I spent Decembers and Januarys and Februarys in shorts and flip-flops, skipping though the rays of warm sunshine the way one might do through sprinklers in summers and wondered what it would be like to taste a solitary snowflake on my tongue.

And you know what? IT'S FUCKING OVERRATED!

Wanna know what it's actually like to wake up day-in-and-day-out seeing nothing but bleak whiteness constantly falling to the ground? Then watch the following video...stare at it for its entire hour long run, then loop it back to the beginning and watch it all over again. Do it until all the darkness inside of you seeps through your being and the only thing you really want to do is set fire to your home and watch the snow melt away like clear blood.

And after you're done, tell me how pretty it is...oh please tell me how pretty it is.

Video after the break.

5 Classic Simpsons Characters Who Deserved Way More Appearances

$

In the 20 plus years of my love affair with The Simpsons I’ve seen more memorable characters than I can possibly count.

The principle characters alone are legendary, but a show with the longevity and ability to remain relevant like The Simpsons cannot rely solely on its main players.

The Simpsons triumphs in ancillary characters, from celebrity voiced one-offs to clever cameos, and this is a major reason for the show’s continued success.

There are certain characters that stand above the rest, characters so profound that their very existence added new dimensions to a show with an already rich character library, and for this reason I wish they had far more screen-time than they were allotted.

5 Alternative Valentine's Day Ideas For Gamers

I don't agree with a designated day, made up by card companies in order to declare your love to the people in your life that you care about...but it's unavoidable. Every shop window is littered with tacky red hearts, gaudy bows and stereotypical sexist gifting and advertisers are shoving ads for perfume and matchmaking websites down our throats.

It's even spread to the Internet...my God, is nothing sacred?!

With that in mind, I am about to contradict myself using the old "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" retort.

Do you have a gamer in your life that you want to impress? One you'd like co-op with? Or even share a controller with?

Aside from the obvious gaming gifts and requisite peace and quiet for the recipient to enjoy said gifts, here are some alternatives for the special gamer in your life:

The TOP TEN WORST LOVE SONGS Ever Recorded

Like anyone who was left alone in the dark getting blotto on Mad Dog 20/20 while everyone around them was dry humping at a high school party to various pop love songs (not that that actually happened to me...let's move on) there are a few melodic odes to the relationship that are so completely soul destroying that to hear them again would be akin to being skinned alive by demons from hell.

And since today is one huge dry humping party that I'm not invited to (and yes I'm married but the pain is still deep people) I have put together a list of love songs so amazingly bad that it is only appropriate that I share them with you on this day of stupidness.

So without further ado, here's my list (after the break).

'FIST OF JUSTICE' Kickstarter Brings Old School Superhero Back With Style

Fist of Justice was the super-heroic defender of Charm City until he made a fatal mistake that ended his career. He threw in the towel and was locked away and soon forgotten. But his power -- though dormant -- did not leave him. Now it has returned and resurrected FOJ -- restoring him as defender of a city dealing with the new villains of the 21st century. Villains who are tougher, stronger, and meaner than ever.
Created by Mike Imboden and Ed Dukeshire, Fist of Justice spun out of his several appearances in Digital Webbing Presents into his own title.  Five issues were released of this fantastic series were released through 2009 and then, well, the series disappeared.

Gone but never forgotten, especially by comic fans who dug the fantastic writing from Mike and Ed and top notch art from such collaborators as artists Chad Hardin, Yildiray Cinar, Anthony Castrillo, Dario Carrasco Jr., André Coelho and Pow Rodrix and colorists Matt Webb, Mickey Clausen, Deon Nuckols, and Ryan Scott, Fist of Justice could have become one of those unfinished, uncollected titles that fans have a hard time convincing others to check out, simply because it wasn't available.

But now, finally and fortunately, Fist of Justice returns with a Kickstarter that launches both the first collection of issues and the long awaited sixth issue. Co-creator and writer Mike Imboden took some time to discuss both the Kickstarter and the series.
