Catching a Falling (Shatter)star — From X-Force to the Longshot Connection

$

Sometimes, there’s not a whole lot that needs to go into a basic superhero origin.

Take Superman, for example.  Last survivor of an alien planet, crashes on our planet, and is raised by good, salt of the earth to become a champion against injustice.  Simple enough, right?

Or how about Spider-Man?  Nerdy kid gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gets super powers.  Seems legit.

But other times, the origins need to be seemingly needlessly complicated, especially when they’re unfolding over several years and being constantly written and rewritten by several different writers.

Did Hawkman’s origin really ever need to be as convoluted as it was?  Or Donna Troy’s?  Hell, how hard could it have been to keep Tony Stark as being a petulant rich guy who learned a life lesson and opted to man up and do something about it instead of the nonsense currently playing out in Kieron Gillen’s Iron Man?

Ummm, probably because a spider frikkin’ BIT you, dude.  Just saying.

When it comes to complex and ridiculous origins, the X-Men certainly seem to have cornered the market, whether it’s the true origins of Cable—which involved way too much time travel, an aneurysm or two on the parts of the readers, and most likely a healthy serving of meth on the parts of the writers to complete—or piecing together the ever evolving tapestry of Wolverine’s past.

Your ELMORE LEONARD NetFIX...

The late, great Elmore Leonard's behind the tales turned into these selects currently available to INSTANT WATCH on Netflix...

FREAKY DEAKY
Directed by Charles Matthau (The Grass Harp)
Starring Christian Slater, Crispin Glover, Billy Burke

I highly recommend the 1988 book over the film, but this is one of the most recent works of Leonard to be adapted to the big screen.

As if its early 1970s Detroit setting (actually filmed in Detroit, btw) wasn't enough, the crazy cast of characters make it quintessential Leonard. The book was a personal favorite of Leonard's, in fact.

The story focuses around a bomb squad cop turned sex-crime investigator.

STICK
Directed by Burt Reynolds
Starring Burt Reynolds, Candice Bergen, George Segal, Charles Durning

Probably, definitely developed in the hopes of continuing a series of films, Burt Reynolds directed himself as Ernest Stickley in this 1985 cult classic. Not to be confused with Tom Sharky.

Drugs, estranged family relationships, and criminals pepper the story, which takes a gritty, if not a little bit Hollywood, approach to the source material (a 1982 novel by Leonard).

The script for this adaptation was a collaboration between Leonard and Joseph Stinson (Sudden Impact).

GOLD COAST
Directed by Peter Weller
Starring David Caruso, Barry Primus

Actor Peter Weller, who would be easy to picture as the lead in any Leonard adaptation (and he has before), is behind the camera this time directing another shoe-in for a Leonard lead -- David Caruso.

Gold Coast was done as a television movie, originally airing on Showtime in 1997. This is just around the resurgence of great Elmore Leonard adaptations from Hollywood (Get Shorty and Jackie Brown).

This one's nowhere near as good as the fore-mentioned, but the dialogue is sharp (pretty much out of the book) and the Florida locations work.

ADDITIONAL ELMORE LEONARD ADAPTATIONS WORTH SEEKING OUT...

OUT OF SIGHT
Directed by Steven Soderbergh
Starring George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Albert Brooks, Don Cheadle

This one's a masterpiece. Possibly even one-upping Elmore Leonard's source material.

In 1998, Soderbergh brought in all of the elements from Leonard's crime books, helped by a script adaptation from Scott Frank (The Wolverine).

Although Elmore Leonard originally envisioned Jack Nicholson or Sean Connery as Jack Foley when originally selling the film rights to the novel, George Clooney would make an impression on him (and on director Steven Soderbergh of course)

3:10 TO YUMA
Directed by Delmer Daves
Starring Glenn Ford, Van Heflin

Recently made available in a HD restoration from Criterion Collection, this was one of the first Elmore Leonard works to be adapted (and one of the most recent, with a big budget decades years later).

The story is pure Western, but the dialogue and the themes of dark justice can be traced back to Leonard.

High Noon gets more respect in the film history books, but this one is a fine alternative.

JACKIE BROWN
Directed by Quentin Tarantino
Starring Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster

A Leonard adaptation from Tarantino was bound to happen. According to the director, he was arrested once for shoplifting Leonard's novel The Switch. His screenplay, True Romance was (also according to the director) a direct tribute to the author.

This one is based on the 1992 sequel novel Rum Punch.

There's incredible chemistry between the two leads. It's actually a come-back of sorts for Robert Forster and Pam Grier.

* Author's Note: Elmore Leonard titles available to WATCH INSTANTLY on Netflix as of mid-August and availability is subject to studio licenses. It is recommended to watch before the month ends!

SCIENCE GEEK: Amaze Your Kids With The Disappearing Spoon Trick...Trust Me, They Will Start Thinking You Are A Wizard After They See This And Better Yet, Mind You Out Of Fear

$

You'd think that with all the advancements made in technology in the last couple decades that have made life worth living (Thank you Netflix Streaming) that the children of the millennium would be more apt to go into science or tech.

But no, they are just as stupid and idiotic as we are.

But I have a dream that one day a generation of children will come of age where they will look at math and science lovingly, in the same way that my generation looked MTV in the early 80's, and make the world, if not a better place, then at least a bit more interesting to live in (or, even better, make dinner party conversations much more palpable).

And the only way I see this dream becoming a reality, is if we, the older generation, walk away from the TV for about an hour a week and start involving these young kids in the kind of experiences that make deep, permanent impressions that last a lifetime.

And one of those awesome experiments is the Disappearing Spoon trick which not only teach kids about chemical reactions, but also illustrates the point that knowledge and belief can sometimes be illusionary and that we must always be open to change and the evolution of fact.

Heavy stuff I know, but seriously, it's one of those life lessons that had most reality stars learned it long ago, we could have enjoyed a world without the Kardashians.

Cosmic Treadmill: 'MARBLE SEASON' by Gilbert Hernandez (review)

The Cosmic Treadmill takes us back in time to those summer days of reading comics, collecting baseball cards and watching everyone grow up around you, even if it seemed as if you would never get older.

This year saw the release of Marble Season from Gilbert Hernandez (Love and Rockets).

As the summer starts to wind down and kids go back to school, what themes will resonate from this book to an all ages audience?

The book is not merely a nostalgic retread of Hernandez’ childhood, but rather an account of growing up, family and the livelihood of a neighborhood when kids still played outside.

'FRIGHT NIGHT 2: NEW BLOOD' Gets a Trailer

$

Apparently this one has nothing to do with the 2011 remake starring Collin Farrell and David Tennant, Fright Night 2: New Blood seems to have vampire Jerry Dandridge reimagined as a femme fatale, "Gerri", a sexy professor, who by night, transforms into a real-life vampire with an unquenchable thirst for human blood. So when a group of high school students travel abroad to study in Romania, they find themselves ensnared in Gerri’s chilling web of lust and terror. Charley and “Evil” Ed must stop Gerri from drinking and bathing in the blood of a “new moon virgin,” which just so happens to be Charley’s ex-girlfriend, Amy. They enlist help from Peter Vincent, the vampire hunting host of a reality show called "Fright Night," to drive a stake through Gerri’s plan and save Amy from a fate far worse than death.

With Charley Brewster, Evil Ed and Peter Vincent all appearing, it seems though this one is a completely new take on the franchise.

Check out the trailer after the jump.  Fright Night 2: New Blood arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on October 1st.

Mike Relm, (who's kind of a Mash-up/Super-Cut master) has put together a fast-paced, spastic tribute to Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy (it refers to the wrapped, convenience store ice cream cone which happens to show up in his Simon Pegg/Nick Frost team-ups), just in time to get you pumped up for The World's End (which thankfully comes out on Friday...I didn't think I could last much longer frankly).

And, after listening/watching about a dozen times, I'm so high on Cornetto-funk vapors that I'm pretty sure I'm capable of beating the shit of the walking dead/psychotic British village-dwellers.

I'm so ready to rock.

FOG! Chats With 'WHAT MAISIE KNEW' Filmmakers Scott McGehee and David Siegel

Interview conducted by Lauren Berkley
From The Deep End to Bee Season, filmmaking partners Scott McGehee and David Siegel tackle uncomfortable, and at times, controversial material.

As an only child of divorced parents, I was intrigued to screen the duo's latest film, What Maisie Knew, about a little girl (newcomer Onata Aprile) who becomes both pawn and bargaining chip to her bickering, pre-occupied parents (Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan).

I talked to McGehee and Siegel about how and why they tackle the subject matter they do, the challenges of adapting others' material, and the differences between directing children and adults.

It's Never Too Early To Convey the Importance of HAPPY HOUR To Your Children...And The MARTINI RATTLE Is A Good Way To Start

I enjoy a good cocktail, and, if you are a regular reader of my posts, then you are well aware of my desire to be in a constant state of tipsy so that I don't have to deal with everyday life and all of it's horrors.

And yes, there have been times when I thought to myself, "Do I really need that fourth bottle of wine?" but then I watch Mad Men and realize that if constant drinking by Ad Executives during office hours is okay, then sitting on my couch in stained sweatpants, drinking a bottle of Riesling at 9am is perfectly legit.

Of course, one of the side effects of drinking that early in the morning is a deep, psychological need to look at myself and naturally, since I am a woman nearing 40, my mind turns to all the hilarious ways to raise potential offspring if my ovaries could manage to squeeze out a viable egg not covered in cobwebs (like raising a tribe of circus performers/carnies by making them throw darts at balloons in order to get fed).

And, upon spying the Martini Glass Rattle, I knew that there was someone out there who also thought that raising children inappropriately was funny as well and for that, I am grateful.

Because nothing says "Awesome Parenting Skills" quite like presenting a baby with faux alcohol to keep them occupied while you spend a couple of blissful hours watching HGTV.

You know what? I don't think this Mothering thing would be half bad after-all.

Va Va Va Voom - The Hotter Side of Sci-Fi

Sure, when it comes to the genre of science fiction, there are not many things more important than a futuristic look or an outer space setting or robots versus humans, or apes versus humans, or giant mutated ants versus humans, or some sort of socially moral tale of dystopian dread.

Oh yeah, and then there are the hot babes.

Any red-blooded American boy, or any red-blooded American girl who likes girls for that matter, or any girl-loving humanoid around the planet, knows full well of what and whom I speak.

There have always been sexually attractive women in movies, and this was never any different in the sci-fi genre.

See Me, Feel Me, Touch me, Heal me: Pardon Me, But I Believe There's Some Who On Your Face...In the Form of VINYLIZED EYE WEAR

$

Nothing makes me happier than finding damaged records and transforming them into something useful. In fact, I sort of feel like a hunter who uses every part of their kill. The album itself gets turned into bowls or coasters and the sleeves get made into gift boxes, post/note cards or journal covers.

And then I sell them to suburbanites at a substantial cost leaving me able to roll around in dollar bills naked.

But now there's another use for those old albums that are torn up from years of wear and tear...as eyeglasses. Yep, you can now wear a pair of glasses made from the Tommy soundtrack in whatever style suits your face.

Sweet Mothers of Invention, now that is truly what recycling should be all about.

The Vinylized Glasses (made by Tipton Eyeworks) are handmade in Hungry using a process to bind the vinyl to cellulose acetate which gives it the durability it needs to remain in shape and keep it sturdy. They only use albums that have seen better days (to keep record aficionados from having conniption fits) so feel free to wear a pair out to a record swap without any fear of getting beat up (but you should probably keep some pepper spray handy just in case...you never know with those guys).

And while the glasses themselves are not cheap ($450 a pair) they do happen to come in a handmade case from a 7" single that was folded it in half with a zipper attached.

After the break is a cool video showing the process.

And yeah, I'm totally trading in my glasses for a pair of these...which I hope is constructed from Color Me Badd's debut album.

Kickstarting a Dream: 'Robin Hood: Outlaw of the 21st Century'

Guest post by Matt Dursin

As far back as I can remember, or at least since that live-action Flintstones movie that almost ruined John Goodman’s career, I railed against Hollywood to make something original.

Sure, once in a great while, something like Inception or Manos: Hands of Fate would come along and restore my faith, but mostly, a look at the top-grossing movies of all-time reveals that a lot of films are made from previously-created material.

Of course, take this all with a grain of salt, because it’s coming from a guy who likes a lot of comic book movies.

DOLLY PARTON'S 'Jolene' Slowed Way, Way Down

$

In 1973 Dolly Parton released the song Jolene which was all about a woman begging her better-looking nemesis not to steal her man. The song came about after Dolly herself was worried that a vivacious (albeit smaller-breasted) bank teller (who she felt was flirting with her husband) might go ahead and snag him for herself. Needless to say, the song was a big hit and I myself was an avid listener to it whenever I got dumped for a girl who wore too much make-up and didn't fart in front her boyfriend yelling "Did you hear a tugboat?"

And even though I never thought the song could get any better than when Ms. Parton's lilting voice sang it with all the pain in the world, now, it does, thanks to it being slowed way the fuck down and turning Parton's voice from the sweet twang we know and love into a deeper, more soulful energy that transforms the song into a fucking bluesy, Billie Holliday-ish sound that will blow your socks off.

Seriously, it will ruin you.

Video/Song after the break.

HD My Nostalgia!

If you're desperately searching for the secret to everlasting youth, it might be worth looking into the world of video games.

It may be an unlikely place to find an anti-aging remedy but some video game franchises have stood the test of time, so discard your herbal elixirs and throw out your experimental oils and creams.

For decades, a select few franchises have matured to the degree that even ten or twenty years on the simple game mechanics hold up against the most cutting edge titles.

And fewer still that have evolved while retaining that apex predatory dominance.

Puzzle Bobble!
Developing smartphone technology has afforded designers the ability to implement this to the masses, not just through identical remakes in super shiny HD form but by effectively re-branding successful games.

One example of this would be Candy Crush Saga.

For those who are unfamiliar with Candy Crush, login to Facebook.

The game is so popular that every time I login to my account there are at least five requests to take part in this maddening "saga".

It has 46 million active users and it was only launched during the latter part of 2012. Credit to its makers because...46 MILLION!
