Mad Men’s favorites are calling in favors this episode as we approach the end of season six.  Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) deals with pests in her life (including the desperate Pete Campbell), Don’s (Jon Hamm) favors are crossing the line, and young Sally (Kiernan Shipka) solidifies her Daddy issues when she sees something that can change everyone’s world for good.

And Bob Benson reveals more of himself this episode; have we cracked his code finally?

AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO COCKTAILS Puts An Artistic Spin on Alcoholic Animals

I am planning on starting a new tradition in my neck of the woods by hosting a weekly cocktail party at my house in order to bring back the days when social drinking in the evening was considered high sophistication (right behind spouse swapping).

Can you imagine a chilly fall evening spent discussing political ennui over a bowl of nut mix while sipping a particularly jovial Jack Rose?

Why, it would be sublime.

The desire to concoct such an event was completely inspired by a lovely little book called An Illustrated Guide to Cocktails: 50 Classic Cocktail Recipes, Tips and Tales (by Orr Shtuhl and illustrated by Elizabeth Graeber) which makes alcoholism adorable by showcasing animals downing the booze.

And although it does look like a children's book, I would avoid passing it to bored eight year-olds to keep them quiet at family get-togethers as their parents won't be happy with you when one of their offspring demands to be made a Manhattan (although knowledge and a keen taste for a discerning alcoholic beverage will probably take them far in life).

THIS IS THE END (review)

Review By Joe Yezukevich
Produced by Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen, James Weaver
Story by Evan Goldberg and  Jason Stone
Written and Directed by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen
Starring James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen,
Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson,
Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Jason Segel,
Mindy Kaling, Kevin Hart, Rihanna,
Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Aziz Ansari

Columbia Pictures / Rated R

This Is the End should be looked at as a viciously funny rumination on friendship, success and what it means to be a good person.  Unfortunately, as we learn from the film, most actors in Hollywood aren't particularly good people.

The movie opens with Seth Rogen picking up Jay Baruchel at LAX. Jay doesn't like LA and Seth is on a mission to change that.

His plan is to bring Jay to James Franco's housewarming party. Once Jay gets to know all of Seth's LA friends, he will totally be won over by everyone and will learn to love them and LA.  Jay feels like his friendship with Seth is growing apart while his LA friends all think he's the greatest (most of all the Rogen obsessed Franco).

So, 901210's IAN ZIERING Is A Chippendale Dancer Now. Just Thought You Might Like to Know

In the early 90's I was as addicted to Beverly Hills 90210 as my mom's generation was to Dallas and Dynasty back in the 80's. And to this day, I will not apologize for my Brandon (Jason Priestley) obsession nor the fact that I wore bike shorts under short dresses just like Donna Martin (Tori Spelling) and Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth).

In fact, I have been feeling very nostalgic for the show that featured a cast of 20 and 30-somethings portraying a bunch of high schoolers lately and wondered what happened to a few of the cast members that have seemingly disappeared from view.

But then I asked myself, "Is this really what you are doing with your life? Googling 90210 cast members. Didn't you once want to be a travel writer and experiencing life to its fullest? What happened to that?" then I fell into a deep depression from which I haven't recovered.

So here's the only cast member info I found before I retreated to my dark bedroom to hide under the covers...Steve (Ian Ziering) is now a Chippendale dancer.

Review by B.S. Walker

Ever wonder what would happen if some of your favorite characters from Film, Television, and Video Games were thrown together for a night of cards?

Yeah, me neither.

But thankfully the fine folks at Telltale Games have done the wondering for you, and the result is a mostly positive affair.

As “The Player” you find yourself at The Inventory -- a secret club built under a video game storage facility that is home to endless tournaments of Hold ‘Em; Texas and Omaha -- going toe-to-toe with Brock Sampson (The Venture Bros.), Claptrap (Borderlands), Sam (Sam & Max), and Ash (The Evil Dead).  With Portal’s homicidal A.I. GLaDOS controlling the action as the dealer.

Who knew right?

And in this trailer for the documentary Spook Central, you can get a deeper look inside the meaning and subliminal messages that were filtered throughout Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis' script.

I Dreamed I Was A Very Clean Tramp: An Autobiography by Richard Hell (book review)

Review by Jessie Lynn
I Dreamed I Was A Very Clean Tramp:
An Autobiography
by Richard Hell (Ecco, 2013)

Richard Hell - founding member of Television, former member of The Heartbreakers (Johnny Thunders’ Heartbreakers, not Tom Petty’s), former frontman for The Voidoids, and writer - has published his memoir.

I Dreamed I Was A Very Clean Tramp is the story of his early life.

He dreams of escape from suburban Kentucky, gets in trouble at school, then goes to boarding school in Delaware, where he meets Tom Verlaine (who he would later found Television with), then drops out and goes to New York City, where he makes small-run lit mags and eventually gets into music.  It’s impossible not to compare this book to Just Kids - Patti Smith’s memoir, which was published in 2010.

The comparisons between the two are easy to draw, because they both write about their childhoods and their eventual moves to NYC (where they were both early members of the burgeoning punk scene), and both their stories hinge on an intense friendship /creative partnership - Hell’s with Tom Verlaine, Smith’s with Robert Mapplethorpe.

It’s impossible not to draw the comparisons, and I like both, but I have to say, I Dreamed I Was A Very Clean Tramp is my favorite of the two.

FOG! Chats With Pop Culture Artist Extraordinaire BRANDON BIRD

Interview conducted by Lauren Berkley
Last month, I attended the 13th Annual Phoenix Comicon. The Guest List was chockful of celebrities, but the one guy I had to track down? Artist Brandon Bird.

You may not recognize his name, but I bet you've seen his absurdist paintings of WTF-subject matter like Law & Order's Lenny Briscoe, James Woods at the Last Supper with Robocop, and Christopher Walken building a droid all over the internet.

For the first time ever, a compilation of his artwork, entitled Brandon Bird's Astonishing World of Art, makes its debut at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, and will be available for mass purchase beginning August 27.

I found Bird amongst his many prints, of which I bought quite a few, and he obliged me with an interview...which did not turn out to be as “absurd” as one might think.

BEER ME SOME SHAMPOO: Atlantic Farms Hops Shampoo Will Get Your Hair Drunk With Moisturizers and Minimize Your Hangover Dandruff

If you're a regular reader of my posts, then you know that I love me some beer. But beer for my hair? Well, color me happy from head-to-toe 'cause now I'm able to shower with the same stuff that makes my tummy satisfied.

Formulated by the folks at Atlantic Farms, Hops Shampoo is loaded with all the good stuff that will make my mane of sexual power gleam like a silky slice of night (I'm raven-haired by the way). And while the company claims it'll fill your nostrils with a masculine smell (which is sort of sexist since I'm a female beer appreciator and I'm going to dose my head in this stuff) the rest of the ingredients seem to make up for it: Hops Shampoo uses a whopping dose of certified organic hops flower essential oils along with rosemary, grapefruit and fir needle essential oils [Atlantic Farms].

Now, if only someone would make a Hops-flavored body wash I could die a happy woman.

Every Year Hollywood Releases Hundreds of Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray™/DVD Combo Packs.

This Is One of Them.

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000
The Movie

The Fan Favorite Feature Film Makes its Blu-ray Debut September 3rd, 2013 from Shout! Factory

After six seasons of sublime, nerdy fun on television, the cult comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000 took to the big screen in 1996 for its deliriously funny takedown of the 1955 alien invasion epic This Island Earth. On September 3rd, 2013 the fan favorite feature film makes its Blu-ray debut in a collector’s edition Blu-ray and DVD combo pack-- loaded with extras including a reversible cover wrap with all new art--from Shout! Factory. Fans can pre-order their copy by visiting https://www.shoutfactory.com/node/217794

Evil scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester explains the premise at the start: in his quest for world domination, he devises a scheme to subject the human race to the worst movies ever made. He tests his plan on Mike Nelson, the sole human aboard an Earth-orbiting space station known as the Satellite of Love. But our hero and his two robot sidekicks turn a lemon into a much funnier lemon by showering This Island Earth with wisecracks, ridicule and general silliness. The human race may never be rid of cheesy movies, but when the critics are this nutty, who cares?

Special Features:
  • The Making Of Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie
  • The Making Of Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie : The Motion Picture Odyssey
  • This Island Earth: 2 ½ Years In the Making
  • Deleted Scenes

TUESDAY THURSDAY BLUs (& DVDs): This Week's New Releases 6/11/13

$

0

An especially impressive week of releases including Sam Raimi's visit to Oz, two of the best tv shows of the past year; House of Cards and The Newsroom, an anniversary edition of the greatest kung fu movie of all time, three fantastic Disney features (with not so fantastic sequels) and more.

As always, fire up that queue and prep that shopping cart and check out this weeks' latest releases!

Oz the Great and Powerful

Disney's fantastical adventure Oz The Great And Powerful follows Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus musician with dubious ethics. When Diggs is hurled away to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot - until he meets three witches (Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams), who aren't convinced he's the great wizard everyone's expecting. Reluctantly drawn into epic problems facing Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it's too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity - and even some wizardry - Oscar transforms himself into the great Wizard and a better man as well.  Extras include Disney Second Screen, Bloopers, and Featurettes.

Last Word: Director Sam Raimi knocks the ball out of the park with this charming and truly wonderful film.  Adapting L Frank Baum's work and acknowledging Victor Fleming's 1939 classic film, Oz the Great and Powerful is a perfect match between filmmaker and material and is a true love letter to the magic of movies.  Highly recommended.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

After getting a taste for blood as children, Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) have turned pro, coping with the trauma of their childhood captivity by slaying witches for hire. But when the seemingly unstoppable bounty hunters meet their match in an enemy so evil, it'll take all their training, weapons and courage to survive as unbeknownst to them, Hansel and Gretel have become the hunted.  Includes featurettes.

Last Word: Some terrific production designs and action sequences can be found amid the clunky performances and lackluster story.  Worth a rental, but ultimately disappointing.

House of Cards: The Complete First Season

Ruthless and cunning, Congressman Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and his wife Claire (Robin Wright) stop at nothing to conquer everything. This wicked political drama penetrates the shadowy world of greed, sex and corruption in modern D.C. Kate Mara and Corey Stoll co-star in the first original series from David Fincher and Beau Willimon.

Last Word:  Binge watching at it's best.  The backdrop of the nation's capital truly intensifies the manipulative, addictive and ultimately absorbing narrative that runs through these thirteen episodes.  House of Cards is simply about power and revenge laid out slowly and methodically in the political arena.  Cancel your plans before you start it as once it gets going, it's hard to turn away.  Highly recommended.

Enter the Dragon (40th Anniversary Edition)

Over three decades following his untimely death, Bruce Lee remains the movies' supreme martial arts star. His masterful final film, Enter The Dragon, stands the test of time as the most beloved martial arts epic in film history. This box office hit takes Lee to the island fortress of criminal warlord Han, whose martial arts academy covers up opium smuggling and prostitution activities. To avenge the death of his sister, Lee infiltrates the stronghold and enters Han's brutal tournament-a breathtaking visual feast of competitions fusing skills in karate, judo, tae kwon do, tai chi chuan and hapkido, staged by Lee himself.  Packed with extras include never before released production art, embroidered Dragon patch, Motion Lenticular, commentary, featurettes, interviews and more.

Last Word: Without a doubt Bruce Lee's best film and perhaps the single greatest example of kung fu cinema, Enter the Dragon has never looked or sounded better.  This cult classic is responsible influencing millions of genre fans and changed both American cinema and pop culture forever.  Beyond it's cultural significance Enter the Dragon is ridiculously entertaining and Bruce Lee is both charming and mesmerizing.  Warner has pulled out the stops with the edition and is a must have for each and every cinegeek out there.  Highest recommendation.

The Newsroom: The Complete First Season

From the fertile mind of Aaron Sorkin and executive produced by Sorkin, Scott Rudin and Alan Poul this behind-the-scenes drama takes a look at a cable-news program at the fictional ACN Network, focusing on the on-and-off-camera lives of its acerbic anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels), new executive producer MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer), their newsroom staff (John Gallagher, Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, and others), their news-division boss (Sam Waterston), and corporate owner (Jane Fonda). Overcoming a tumultuous first day - climaxing in a newsflash that a BP oil rig has just exploded in the Gulf of Mexico - the team sets out on a patriotic if quixotic mission to "do the news well" in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles, and their own personal entanglements.  Extras include a conversation with cast and crew, behind the scenes, a look at each episode with Aaron Sorkin, commentaries, and deleted scenes.

Last Word: Some of television's best writing and a truly magnificent ensemble are make The Newsroom one of the most addictive series in recent memory.  There's a little bit of heavy handedness and self importance, but that goes with more with the vision of creator Sorkin than with the series itself.  The season is set in the recent past so the characters deal with recent real live news events and both the approach and the results are truly fascinating.  The characters talk and talk and talk, and frankly, I can't get enough.   Highly recommended.

SNAKES ON A PLANE Gets Even Better When Edited For TV

Who the fudge edited me?

We all know that when an R-rated movie heads to TV, all the good parts like cussing, sex and drug use get cut out of it in order to make it palatable for sensitive television viewers who live in a world where these things don't exist.

But what happens to a movie when it gets so ridiculously edited that it somehow transcends itself and becomes even better?

I'm guessing it becomes as luminous as the Snakes on a Plane edit that was shown on FX and for that I am eternally grateful.

Glorious mash-up of elegance and hilarity after the break.

The 'Honest Music Festival' Commercial Proves Once-And-For-All That Watching A Bunch of Bands Play In 100 Degree Heat Really Kinda Sucks

This is my favorite part of music festivals

The last music festival I went to was in the late nineties (Lilith Fair) where I spent a majority of the day in a public toilet suffering from diarrhea due to food poisoning. I would have gone home but unfortunately I drove to the festival with friends who believed that there was nothing wrong with forcing a fellow human being to shoot fire from her ass in a boiling microwave of a port-a-potty while total strangers banged on a plastic door and yelled obscenities at her until the sun went down.

Needless to say, that was the last time I engaged in musical appreciation with legions of people.

Now, before any of you starts to argue that I'm missing out on some kind of spiritual experience by avoiding music festivals, take a gander at CollegeHumor's take on what these so-called celebrations are really like.

And then spend a moment or two pondering the extreme discomfort one must go through when shitting for four hours straight only to realize they have run out of toilet paper after hour two.

Yeah, that really happened.

Video after the break.
