THE LAST CAT ON EARTH: A Music Video About Dogs Killing Cats...If You're A Dog Person You Should Find This Pleasing

$

Normally I would have filed this under WTF considering it's a music video about dogs who have somehow managed to obtain political power in America and have decided to use that clout to kill off every cat that roams the country. But this morning I woke up to my cat puking on my chest and well, the idea of a cat genocide didn't seem so crazy.

In fact, I'm pretty much okay with it.

The video (below) is directed by Jimmy Wong (who is featured on the Swiss American Federation song Don't Let Go playing in the background) stars the director and his brother Freddie (whose comedy/geek videos have been featured many times on FOG!) as cat bodyguards protecting the very last cat alive.

And let's just say it doesn't end well for them.

Kinda like it won't for my cat if that stain does not come off my comforter.

Moth City truly takes advantage of the digital medium, in the way that Mark Waid has been talking about with Thrillbent for the past year.

Most notable about this book is the stunning art, and page transitions, using layers as a storytelling device.

An American becomes a Chinese crime lord in terrible dealings with the military for canisters of chemical weapons.

Amazing art for fans of Paul Pope’s work. Highly recommended.

I can make it through this post. I can make it through this post. I can make it through this post...

All right, so little Einstein is a goldfish who lost his ability to swim after a bladder infection left him unable to stay right-side up.

His owner, Leighton Naylor, felt horrible for the little guy who was trying so hard to be like he once was, that he spent THREE HOURS constructing a mini life jacket out of recycled tubing that fit Einstein and enabled him to swim regularly.

After Einstein (who wasn't too keen to the idea at first) got used to his new apparatus he went about his life as if nothing had ever been wrong.

Entertain yourself with the video of little Einstein below as I try and stop from sobbing over how adorable this whole thing is.

Kids, by their very nature, are trusting.

Which is why it's so damned hilarious to hand them horrible-tasting food for the first time (that we know is going to ruin them gastronomically) just for our viewing pleasure.

What can I say, grown-ups are assholes.

FilmCraft: Producing
By Geoffrey Macnab & Sharon Swart
Focal Press

At 192 pages, Macnab & Swart's FilmCraft: Producing feels like a much larger book, in no small part the result of the sheer amount of information within.

In the film industry, the role of a producer can vary based on hundreds of factors and their various responsibilities can represent hundreds of others.

With the responsibility of handling and answering thousands of questions during a single project, the producer is simply, the person responsible for bringing a movie to life.

The book is built around some stunning photography and fifteen truly illuminating interviews with some of cinema's most prolific producers including Tim Bevan (Les Miserables, The Big Lebowski, Shaun of the Dead), Edward R. Pressman (The Crow, Conan the Barbarian), Lauren Shuler Donner (Mr. Mom, Free Willy, the X-Men franchise), Jon Kilik (Do The Right Thing, The Hunger Games), Bill Kong (Hero, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Jon Landau (Titanic, Avatar), Jan Chapman (The Piano), Lorenzo di Bonaventura (The Matrix, The Transformers, G.I. Joe), the team of Ron Yerxa & Albert Berger (Little Miss Sunshine, Election), and Andrew Macdonald (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later).

For cinegeeks, the book is a treasure trove of little known information and production trivia.  Both an invaluable reference work as well as an excellent overview and introduction to the producer's role in contemporary cinema.  For everyone, it's a smart, entertaining and highly readable must have for your bookshelf.  Highly recommended.

After the jump check out a few sample pages.

SCIENTISTS MAKE THE WORLD'S SMALLEST MOVIE...And It Stars 130 Atoms

$

A bunch of IBM researchers put their giant brains together and made the world's smallest movie (which has been given that status by Guinness World Records) starring 130 atoms that were magnified 100 million times.

The simplistic story is about a boy named Adam who plays with an atom (it's kinda meta isn't it) and while it's lack of a complex story line may bore you, don't let that stop you from watching the video BECAUSE IT'S MADE UP OF ATOMS PEOPLE...ATOMS.

That's right, scientists made a movie with basic units of matter that have neither the desire to be a movie star nor the consciousness to become a douchebag once they realize they are famous.

This is movie making in it's purest form, and I for one am happy it exists. And let's face facts, it's a whole lot better than The Host.

After the break is the movie as well as a "How They Did It" documentary.

STEPHEN COLBERT Salutes the University of Virginia Via His Valedictory Address...In Typical Colbert Fashion

$

Stephen Colbert took time out of his busy schedule to speak to U. VA's class of 2013 graduates about the life they were going to face outside of the gilded campus that was conceived and designed by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe back in 1819.

And he did so in typical Colbert fashion, which at once praise the graduating class while slightly insulting them (He acknowledged their high rankings in prestigious magazines and then saluted them for getting the number one spot in Playboy's "Best Party Schools" issue).

At 17 minutes long, Colbert weaved a tale of being denied entrance to the school back in 1984, his appreciation for their various secret societies, U. VA's honor pledge that ends with "...so help me Adderal", famous people associated with the college and of course, Thomas Jefferson's love of diversity (when it comes to snagging some booty).

I'm sure those that were graduating learned some valuable lessons.

HOW TO MAKE Your Own Cake Pan Ukulele...You know, If You're Into That Kind of Stuff

$
0

I know, I know, the ukulele has become the Hipster instrument that shows up at coffeehouses and annoys you, but it's not the instrument's fault that a bunch of mustachioed twenty-somethings are trying their hardest to be all Mumford and Sons while you are sitting at a small table trying to de-stress from work.

The ukulele itself is a harmless musical instrument that, when played correctly, gives off a forlorn sound that makes you think of Hawaii or Kentucky (yes, those are the only two states that I happen to feel a kinship to when a ukulele is playing) and can transport you there via it's 4 strings.

And now (thanks to Chester Winowiecki) you can construct your own ukulele from a couple of cake pans, some toothpicks, a piece of lumber and various tools that will no doubt bring you fame and maybe free coffee (if you happen to bring it into the coffee shop) and, quite possibly, show those old-timey wanna-be musicians what real "artisanal" sound actually is.

After the break are a series of pics from the ukulele and a link that will show you how to make it (which you should). Happy Building!'

I was all set to write yet another blog analyzing yet another tepid episode of Da Vinci’s Demons, but I actually really liked this past Friday’s episode.

It is entirely due to its main guest star, the truly creepy - and amazing - Paul Rhys as Vlad Dracula.

Yes, that Dracula.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #23 (Pick of the Week)
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Dave Marquez
Colors: Justin Ponsor
Letters: Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

The life of Miles Morales has been altered forever.

In the last issue. Venom killed his mother and in her final moments, she learned how Miles had been spending his time after school. She was as proud as only a loving mother could be and cautioned him to never tell his mutant-hating father.

Like Peter Parker learned so long ago, life as Spider-Man is a painful ride for his loved ones.

Now, it’s Miles' turn to walk the long and hard road of tragedy before the hero can rise once more.

The story picks up one year later.

Miles is older, bigger, and no longer the web crawler. We all know that Miles will eventually find the inspiration to wear the mask again, but Brian Michael Bendis did a great job of convincing you otherwise while masterfully capturing the aura of loss between Miles and his father. The emotion of it all resonates so poignantly because we’ve seen it before with Peter Parker, and since Miles is just a kid.

That's the essence of it all right there. Bendis never lets the reader forget this fact without ever throwing it in your face. Most comics with super-powered youngsters tend to forget this important fact. There is an innocence to his character that is so natural that you can’t help but to root for him. The use of Dave Marquez’s talents was the right way to go. We are so used to seeing the amazing work of Sara Pichelli, but a different hand was required to augment the story's jump in time. Justin Ponsor was money as always in the coloring department.

If I had to use one word to describe this series it would be "captivating" and this issue is just another example of why.

Grade: A-
