Cumberbatch is most well known for playing Sherlock Holmes in the British television program Sherlock, though he was also seen in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and will be better known by US audiences when he antagonizes the crew of the Enterprise next year in Star Trek 2.
Though Express reports this news comes from insiders at the show and hasn't been officially announced, Steven Moffat is the showrunner on both Sherlock and Doctor Who, so it like a pretty safe bet.
