Entertainment Weekly has the first look at Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker, the upcoming The Avengers) and Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans, Tamara Drewe) in next year's Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
Here's another stab at a modern reboot of a classic faiy tale, this time based on a Brothers Grimm story. You can add this to the list of next year's fairy tale retellings which also include Snow White & The Hunstmen and Mirror Mirror.
Tommy Wirkola took on directing duties as well as co-wrriting the script with Dante Harper. Wirkola was the man behind Dead Snow, a great, German genre film that features college kids, a ski trip, a secluded cabin, and Nazi zombies (it's currently streaming on Netflix and should not be missed).
Witch Hunters picks up 15 years after siblings Hansel and Gretel had their traumatic gingerbread-house incident and have since turned into bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world.
Tough to gauge how this one is shaping up based on the lone image, but with Wirkola at the helm, Renner and Arterton in the title roles, and a supporting cast that includes: Peter Stormare (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Constantine), Zoe Bell (Deathproof, Whip It) and Famke Janssen (Taken, X-Men, The Wackness)... I have my hopes up.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters will open in theaters on March 2, 2012.
