There have been previous Grateful Dead film projects, but the problem with getting any of them off the ground is obtaining the music rights.
Deadheads rejoice!
According to Deadline, ICM has been granted access to the band's entire music catalog and are planning a narrative-style feature film built around their songs.
The music will not be used for a biopic, but rather a film that captures that Haight-Ashbury hippie spirit of the late 60's and early 70's.
ICM Agent Bruce Kaufman is leading the pact on this project. He did the same thing previously, gaining access to 20 re-recorded songs from The Beatles for Across the Universe. Kaufman is working closely with Grateful Dead band archivist David Lemieus and Mark Pinkus, GM of Grateful Dead Properties at Rhino Entertainment.
The Grateful Dead formed in 1965 in San Francisco and broke up 30 years later after frontman/lead singer Jerry Garcia passed away shortly after the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
As of now the project has no script, title, or attached studio.
