GAME OF THRONES: "Valar Dohaeris" S3E1 (recap)

The third season premiere of HBO’s Game of Thrones is titled “Valar Dohaeris”, which translates from High Valerian to “All men must serve”, and – per usual for this show – the audience spends time with various characters to see who – or what – they’re serving at this particular moment.

Things start out with poor Samwell Tarly (John Bradley), on the run from the White Walkers. We last saw Sam in the season two finale, hiding behind a rock and surrounded by ice zombies. Sam serves the Night’s Watch, who (with an assist from Jon Snow’s pet wolf) save him from the zombie attack, and Lord Commander Mormont (James Cosmo) chews him out for forgetting to release the messenger ravens to warn about the impending attack of the ice zombies. Lord Mormont gets to utter an appropriately ominous “We have to warn them, or before winter is done you and everyone you've ever known will be dead” and then we join Jon Snow (Kit Harington) at the wildling camp.
