Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S8E17: Hex

Magic is afoot as Zatanna makes her debut and the first thing she made disappear was my pants.

All right, they were off already, but still.  Yowza.

Anyway, with magic involved, no one is really safe, not even Clark.

Ebyam em llac?

Esaelp?

The Random:
1. You know what people like to hear on their birthdays?  That they’re one year closer to the sweet release of death.  Or at least that’s what Lois thinks.

2. Oh, yes, Shadowcrest Estate has gotten a mention and even though she’s not using her powers the way she normally does in the comics—until throwing some chains at Ollie, that is—Zatanna plays things really well throughout.

3. Zatanna’s role is not as cut and dry as the hero we’re used to, but she really does have the best of intentions in bringing her dad back from the dead.  It’s just that whole “soul for a soul” business she’s kind of screwed up.

Sivle fo sedahs taerg!

The Awesome:
1. Chloe’s opening scene is great and she comes off as being really flustered without being whiny about it, and that little spark between her and Ollie is juuuust about there.  Either way, it’s best for allowing us to be introduced to Zatanna, who promptly turns Chloe into a clone of Lois.  Careful what you (birthday) wish for…

2. Erica Durance does a fantastic job playing one regular Lois, and one Lois with Chloe’s personality inside and we learn a lot about what’s been eating at Chloe just as she learns a lot about how her actions have inadvertently led her to be perceived by those closest to her.  But perhaps even better is Clark when he forgets his heritage and Chlois tries to convince him that he’s a super powered alien and he acts like she's insane and refuses to believe it.

3. As cool as the episode was, Chloe’s final scene steals the show, perhaps the season to date, as she officially assumes the role of Watchtower, the Smallville equivalent of Oracle.  Watchtower is officially online, and I got me some goosebumps.

Oh my, it’s on now, and I couldn’t be happier for it.

The WTF?!!
1. All right, Lois has been at The Daily Planet for like two years and she’s already an embedded journalist, getting to rub elbows with world leaders, and getting personal assistants?  How exactly are we supposed to buy that?

2. Ok, so can anyone explain why there’s a mugging in broad daylight going on, with no fewer than eight witnesses and no one is doing anything about it, not calling the cops, not trying to stop it, nothing?  It’s not like it was the middle of the night, it’s like frikkin’ ten am!

3. The staff at The Daily Planet have to know that Lois is over in Mexico covering a story, and yet none of them, not even her assistant, question what she’s doing back in the States when Chloe shows up in her form.  No wonder she got promoted so fast, the rest of the staff is half retarded.

“Chloe, look I have to go.  I’m having a hell of a first day at work,
you know, accompanying troops during a high profile coup…”
