The Veritas arc takes a violent and unexpected turn as a long running character takes a fatal plunge, Lex gets control of the keys to the safe deposit box in Zurich, and everything changes.
And if you watched this episode the first time and weren’t shocked by the first five minutes, you’re dead inside.
The Random:
1. Ah, even in a fictional world, you can count on the media to be a bunch of vultures as they show up to LuthorCorp snapping pictures like madmen and clamor for Lex to talk to them. Stay classy, press. Stay classy.
2. Luckily, Clark can waltz into a crime scene to rummage through Lionel’s safe. Luckier still, it’s got a Kryptonian artifact that Lionel left to Clark in the event of his death and reveals him to be more good than we ever believed.
3. Lex’s little henchwoman, Gina, sure is handy, taking care of all the evidence linking Lex to the murder, uncovering Clark’s secret, pistol whipping Chloe, and shooting people. Give this woman a raise, dude. She’s earned it. And by raise, I mean kill her, of course. She knows way too much.

The Awesome:
1. Just when you think the show can’t do much to surprise you, you get a scene like the final—and I do mean final—encounter between Lionel and Lex, as Lionel tries to steer Lex away from the truth about the Traveler and Lex responds in the only way he knows how—by throwing him forty stories off a building to his death. Yeah. That just happened.
2. The title of the episode clearly doesn’t only refer to Lionel’s fate, but also Lex’s journey into madness as he hallucinates seeing his younger self chastising him for killing his father, a younger self he ultimately rids himself of in one of the most powerful of Michael Rosenbaum’s performances to date.
3. The last scene between Clark and Lex at Lionel’s grave cements the evil in place inside Lex as he smiles slightly at Clark’s grief before just walking away without a word.

You’ve also got to love just how modest a gravesite Lex splurged for…

The WTF?!:
1. The Daily Planet seems to have the same oversight that Smallville High did as Chloe comes and goes as she pleases, gallivants around the world, and uses computers to hack into federal databases. That’s a sweet gig she’s got going there.
2. Why do they have police in this town? Because their investigations into things seem to be nothing compared to those of Jimmy Olsen with a cheap camera catching the evidence that Lionel was pushed. And knowing that the glass was clearly shot out, did they find a gun? Did they even look for one? I’m willing to bet they didn’t.
3. Lois gets shot and handles it for the most part like a hangnail. Thankfully, Jimmy’s first aid equates to putting a jacket on top of her and banging on the door to a room they’re trapped in. After hours. In the basement. Where no one can hear anything.

“No, Lois, it’s all right. I have a jacket and some bubblegum. That gunshot wound will practically heal itself.” |
