WTF FRIDAY: There's A Fish Roaming the Seas With Human-Like Teeth...Just Thought You Would Like to Know

So, uh, I don't mean to scare you or anything, but there's this fish called the Sheepshead that sort of has an overbite consisting of human-like teeth and it apparently lives in the Mid-Atlantic JUST LIKE A NORMAL FISH...which it clearly isn't.

Seriously, there's no way that this is a real fish.  Gaze into it's mouth.  Does that look like any fucking fish you have ever seen?

No.

I mean, if you were unaware of its existence (like I was) and just so happened to have pulled it up out of the depths of the water, dangling from your fishing pole, you would do the right thing...scream like a horror movie victim before throwing it, your pole, and everything else in the boat into the water so you can get to shore faster.

WEIRD FRAKKING POLISH Animation Should Only Be Watched Sober

$

This 30-minute animation called Dziwne dziwy, czyli… Baśń o Korsarzu Palemonie is probably one of the most confusing things you will ever see.

Directed by Krzysztof Dębowski, it is apparently based on a Polish Fable written by Jan Brzechwa...about a King who dies, but before he does so, he announces to his four daughters that the one who will overcome the Palemon the Pirate will get the crown. Palemon owns all the seas and his empire is enormous. Eventually one of King’s daughters, the ugliest one, conquers Palemon’s empire and she becomes the new Queen. But besides that, she also hooks up with Palemon and they get married. [Cartoon Brew]

Now, I didn't really understand what was going on while watching it but that might be because I'm on pain medication (no, I'm not taking it for recreational purposes...this time), but that by no means minimized how fucking awesome and crazed this animated tale was.

Seriously, if you have 30 minutes (and if you are at work, you know you do) watch it.

You'll thank me.

Marvel Comics Golden Age DisContinuity Appendix:Silver Streak Comics 001

One of the greatest guides to the concept of continuity in a specific series is The DisContinuity Guide: The Unofficial Doctor Who Companion by Paul Cornell, Martin Day and Keith Topping, first put out in 1995.

From my point of view the genius of this work is in the way the authors peel back the layers of a complex text like Doctor Who, and start back at the beginning, when we didn't know anything about the series or what it would eventually evolve into.

This allows us to see the ways in which the universe was expanded, sometimes carefully, often times not.  We get to see undeveloped themes and the earliest examples of new themes.

Like an evolutionary biologist studying our small, brown furred burrowing human ancestors, we get a look at the way things were without the baggage of the way things are.

Marvel Comics Golden Age DisContinuity Appendix

In a previous installment of this series I mentioned that Marvel Mystery Comics #2 ran an ad in the inside back cover for Silver Streak Comics #1, a comic published by Lev Gleason Publications, a competitor to Marvel/Timely, which was owned and operated by Martin Goodman, not a man known for his generosity in supporting the efforts of his competitors.

inside front cover of Marvel Mystery Comics 001

Why the ad for Silver Streak Comics appeared in a Timely comic presents an interesting mystery so in this installment we'll examine Silver Streak Comics #1, and along the way learn something about the way comics were done in 1939.

JOE JONAS Has An Alleged Sex Tape...I Guess That Means The Jonas Bros. Slash Fic Community Has A Bit More Detail to Use

Joe "Purity Ring" Jonas and his girlfriend Blanda Eggenschwiler have apparently filmed a hardcore BDSM sex tape while they were on vacation in Argentina.

And while it physically pains me to say this out loud, I'm kinda looking forward to seeing it for reasons best left between me and my therapist.

The tape (which a rep for Joe Jonas has vehemently denies exists) contains acts (according to Gawker) that read like poorly written Jonas Bros. slash fiction:

The Man From Hong Kong Chats With Legendary "NINJA" Producer JOSEPH LAI

While you might not recognize his name straight away, trust me when I say you’ve probably seen several of his movies, especially if you’ve ever picked up a movie with a cover that features a Ninja wearing a headband that says Ninja on it!

Or a film that’s called Robo Kickboxer or a Kickboxer King.

Joseph Lai (Lai Sun-lan) is the head of the Hong Kong based Production & Distribution Company IFD Films & Arts. Yes, the company that gave the world all those Ninja movies starring Richard Harrison and various ‘gwailo’ actors and martial artists.

Lai also gave many Hong Kong action directors including Phillip Ko (Ko Fei), Paul Wong (Wong Kwan) and Ridley Tsui (Tsui Po-wah) their first shots at directing movies. He also gave western martial arts actors including Bruce Fontaine, Kenn Goodman, Steve Brettingham, Michael Miller, Wayne Archer and even myself the opportunity to play leading roles in his movies.

Lai, currently the Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Movie Producers Association, is fully aware of the limitations of his movies; he doesn’t regard his movies as high art and doesn’t expect other people to. But as anyone who worked on any of his movies will admit, they were great fun, and they’re very entertaining to watch.

Forces of Geek’s Man from Hong Kong& resident Ninja Big Mike Leeder continues his look back at the Ninja movie legacy with a rarely seen interview with Joseph Lai, retrieved from the vaults of the Golden Ninja Empire…

THE S FROM HELL: A Short Film About the Scariest Corporate Symbol In History, The Screen Gems Logo

The following short film by Rodney Ascher (Room 237) is a... short documentary-cum-horror film about the scariest corporate symbol in history - The 1964 Screen Gems logo, aka ‘The S From Hell.’ Built around interviews with survivors still traumatized from their childhood exposure to the logo after shows like Bewitched or The Monkees, the film brings their stories to life with animation, found footage, and dramatic reenactments[The S From Hell].

Now, I personally don't remember being traumatized by this particular logo when I was growing up and left all alone in the afternoons with the TV as my babysitter (the Sit Ubu Sit, Good Dog tag line after Family Ties is what gave me the chills), but I can certainly appreciate a documentary about a generation of children suffering from permanent psychological damage caused by a corporation hell bent on slamming mundane television programming into our noggins.

Oh, and it doesn't hurt that it's one of the weirdest fucking things I have seen in a long time.

Check it out.

So many ladies, so few arrows
You know an episode if going to be a bit dark when it starts in strip club.  This week The Huntress returns (what, you thought the episode name would be a lie?) to make certain her father is not let out of jail early for all the bad things he's done.

Naturally, that means she has to meet up with her masked ex beau, lure him into her evil plans and generally cause a bunch of havoc.

The Hunt is On
Helena "The Huntress" Bertinelli (Jessica De Gouw) has been methodically taking out her father's former cohorts, which naturally puts her on the police radar.

SOUTHWEST AIRLINES Gets Evil...With the Help of the 'Requiem For A Dream' Score

You know how if you happen to add Yakety Sax (from Benny Hill) to any video it automatically becomes hysterical? (Seriously, go on and try it). Well, when add the score from Requiem For A Dream to something, it becomes a creepy tale of horror that will make your blood run cold.

Need an example?

Well, take this nice little ad from Southwest Airlines for instance (see below). It's perfectly sweet, all about finding your path in life and how Southwest Airlines can help get you there. Why, there's even Some Nights by Fun playing in the background to make it all peppy and shit...then someone goes ahead and puts the good ole' score from Requiem in it and now this ad is just plain evil.

So now I'm never flying this airline again...EVEN THOUGH MY MOM'S LIKE SOME SUPERVISOR THERE AND I CAN FLY FOR FREE.

Yeah, that's right, I'm giving up free air travel because I'm scared.

Thanks so much...jackass.

AN INCREDIBLY SEXY Garlic Press Commercial For Food Porn Appreciators

$

I have personally witnessed rational people stand in front of television sets salivating to the Food Network programming in the exact same way porn appreciators do. And while I too lust over thick slices of Devil's Food cake slathered in chocolate marshmallow frosting, I have not once been caught with my pants down submitting to a 50 Shades of Grey-type relationship to it.

But the folks behind the Savora Garlic Press know that a public who spend hours looking at pictures of pot pies wants a little titillation with their advertisement and boy, do they give it.

Now,  I'm not sure if this would be considered NSFW but I probably wouldn't watch it if I was in the kitchen surrounded by food...it might be a little too much stimulation.

THE UNDERGROUND X-RAY RECORDS OF THE SOVIET UNION

$

It's easy to take entertainment for granted.

In our present day we have the ability to purchase and enjoy so many recreational items: play a video game, listen to whatever it is we want, watch whatever we want, and, though there are still many folks out there who wish they could control our choices, read any books we can find.

Folks happily embrace the technology that has made obtaining our selections quick, simple and affordable, and we think nothing now of versions that exist only on the ether, or rather—on a cloud.

Still others, myself included, like to seek out older formats and what some will call obsolete mediums.

Some of these formats such as the vinyl LP have actually increased in their yearly sales and there are constantly new purveyors now marketing records, both for new album releases and reissuing older releases.

The annual April celebration event for small independent record shops around the world, Record Store Day, has increased popularity and made it a huge success. For many of these brick and mortar stores and the independent record labels that send exclusive items for sale on that day, it is their best retail day of the year.

Long thought dead formats such as 78 r.p.m. records, 8-track tapes, cassettes, VHS tapes and laser discs, still have numerous aficionados and collectors that will readily discuss at great length their obsessions and collections. In fact, there are even record labels, bands and filmmakers that choose to only release their output on some of these "antique" formats.

It wasn't always this easy though...

Beginning in the 1940's and throughout next decades there was the Soviet Union's ban on all things Western, which to their government was considered decadent, Fans of the nascent rock and roll, pop or rhythm and blues music had no way of purchasing records of the bands and artists that they heard about and wanted to listen to.

Elvis Presley was a very dangerous commodity.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

Saga #11 (Pick of the Week)
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Art: Fiona Staples
Colors: Fiona Staples
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $2.99

Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples need to produce a crappy issue of Saga already. That way, I would have something new to say instead of the usual praise that spews from my fingers.

You know, how Saga is "the best there is", "the best there was", and "the best there ever will be".

That sort of praise is standard for this series because the superb craftsmanship that exudes through every page, every panel, and every word balloon in this book. Alana and Marko are a duo that you just have to love and their opening sex scene speaks to their passion under unfortunate circumstances.

Baby Isabel’s narration makes you care about everything that’s happening even more because we are witnessing events of days gone by which could mean the stars of our story are already dead. Knowing this makes you cross your fingers and hope they survived all of this star-crossed prejudice. That is the least they deserve considering Marko’s father makes the ultimate sacrifice to save his family which occurs just as he warms up to the idea of his granddaughter being of two races by commenting on her beautiful eyes.

Saga is the gift that keeps on giving because not only is every issue absolutely amazing but it just keeps getting better and better.

THE WALKING DEAD: "This Sorrowful Life" S3E15 (review)

By Kate McKendry
This Sorrowful Life opens with Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Daryl (Norman Reedus), and Hershel (Scott Wilson) discussing Rick’s plan to give Michonne (Danai Gurira) to the Governor (David Morrissey) to avoid going to war.

Although Daryl and Hershel clearly don’t agree with the plan, Rick goes to Merle (Michael Rooker) for help.

Letting Merle in on the “inner circle” of his plan, Merle tells Rick that the Governor wouldn’t kill Michonne – he would just torture her instead.

Merle accuses Rick of being cold as ice, but then tells him he doesn’t have the spine to go through with the plan. Although his face agrees with Merle’s statement, Rick tells him that they need to get Michonne to the Governor by noon.

Outside, Rick sees Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Carl (Chandler Riggs), Michonne, Daryl, and Glenn (Steven Yeun) lay down a homemade barbed wire tack strip – trying to slow down whoever speeds up through the gates again. Daryl informs an impressed Rick that it was Michonne’s idea.

DOCTOR WHO: "The Whovian" – S7PT2 Prequel

By Tea Krulos
Doctor Who-mania is currently in full swing with fans eagerly anticipating 2014, the Year of the Who, which is the 50th Anniversary of the British science fiction television show. Think about that for a moment— a show that, except for a (mostly) dormant hiatus in the 90s and early 2000s has been running for 50 years.

My introduction to The Doctor happened in that colorful pop culture explosion known as the 1980s.

My parents couldn’t afford cable or even an elaborate television set. We got about five or six grainy channels if the antenna was leaning the right way.

My dad, a science fiction fan, recommended we try watching a show on PBS called Doctor Who, which had recently developed a popular following in the States. Tom Baker was the current face of the Doctor, a highly eccentric but intelligent individual, from an alien race named the Time Lords.

UK Jelly aficionados Bompas and Parr (who have single-handedly raised the mere jiggly dessert into an art form) have created a "Whiskey Tornado" or, more to the point, a machine that will allow the user to freebase whiskey with a straw.

The user simply inhales the whiskey vapor where it bypasses the liver and heads straight to the bloodstream via the lungs, whereby the person gets shit-faced in a more dignified manner.
