Full press release after the jump.

SYFY IGNITES THE IMAGINATION WITH MOST ORIGINAL PRIMETIME PROGRAMMING HOURS IN HISTORY

RECORD 28 SCRIPTED AND REALITY PROJECTS
 IN DEVELOPMENT

EPIC TRANSMEDIA EVENT DEFIANCE TO PREMIERE IN 2013

NEW YORK – April 24, 2012 – Coming off Syfy’s most watched First Quarter ever in total viewers, Adults 18-34 and key women demos, Syfy and Chiller President Dave Howe today ignited the imagination of the advertising community by unveiling the next phase of the channel’s largest original programming slate in history. This will feature Syfy’s most original primetime hours ever, a record 28 scripted and reality development projects and the 2013 premiere of the highly-anticipated Defiance, the visionary transmedia experience that will unite television and Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) gaming for the very first time.

Said Howe: “Syfy’s Upfront celebrates the power of Igniters, our influential audience who has the highly coveted ability to move brands forward faster.  This audience Imagines Greater and, as a result, we will be bringing them the most groundbreaking entertainment phenomenon in 2013.  Nearly four years in the making, Defiance is the first ever, weekly scripted television and Massively Multiplayer Online game, converging to create a singular, interactive and epic story.  Along with this unprecedented experience, we will be unveiling our most ambitious development slate ever of relevant and contemporary original programming.”

The diverse Syfy reality slate features six new series: School Sprits, Paranormal Highway, Collection Intervention, Viral Video Showdown, Ghost Mine and, from the producers of the smash hit series Face Off, Hot Set. Unscripted development projects include a chilling “found footage” paranormal experiment; an extreme concierge company; Destination Truth’s Josh Gates transforming awesome ideas into awesome reality and the unearthly challenges of selling haunted houses.

Among the scripted development projects are adaptations of popular works by best-selling novelists such as Stephen King (Eyes of the Dragon), John Christopher (The Lotus Caves) and Charlaine Harris (Grave Sight), as well as the hit movie The Adjustment Bureau and the DC Entertainment Comic Booster Gold. Syfy further announced shows about a Fifth Column of feuding aliens and a time-traveling elite military squad.

This record expansion, including eight scripted development projects from Universal Cable Productions, builds upon the channels powerhouse lineup of hit series such as Warehouse 13, Being Human, Alphas, Face Off and Ghost Hunters. These programs have transformed Syfy into a top 10 cable entertainment network among Adults 25-54 for 16 consecutive years.

Said Mark Stern, President Original Content, Syfy, and Co-Head Original Content, Universal Cable Productions: “Over its 20 year history, Syfy has always pushed the boundaries of our genre and the entertainment experience. This new crop of innovative, thought-provoking, emotionally-charged programming will propel us even farther as we imagine all the greater possibilities ahead for the powerful Syfy brand.”

For the gala, star-studded Upfront event at the American Museum of Natural History, Syfy created an opportunity for guests to live like an Igniter – highly imaginative people who move brands forward as showcased in the channel’s groundbreaking study with Simmons/PSFK -- along with celebrity Igniters from the worlds of business innovation (Sir Richard Branson), music (Young the Giant, DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid) and the culinary arts (Marcus Samuelsson).

Syfy is also expanding its multi-platform growth. Syfy Ventures announced a partnership with Hasbro to develop the first online social game based on the iconic G.I. JOE franchise. G.I. Joe: Special Ops, published by Syfy Games, will debut in June on Facebook and Syfy Games.com, among other platforms worldwide.
Continuing its expansion of original video content, mobile reach to new platforms and commitment to cutting edge technology, Syfy Digital unveiled four new initiatives, from its first ever unscripted program, new apps for Windows Phone and Roku and the upcoming addition of sync-to-broadcast functionality to its successful Syfy app for iPads and Android tablets for season three of the hit series Face Off.
A global brand, Syfy is currently available in 75 countries, reaching nearly 150 million households.

I am assaulted on almost a daily basis by family members who seem to enjoy uploading pics of themselves in various states of undress.

And for the record, I don't want to see the ass of my cousin hanging out of her underwear for the same reason I don't watch Faces of Death movies before bed, because I don't want to end up dreaming about it.

For the love of all that is Portal, enough with the family nip slips PLEASE!

Agent Coulson Finally Steps into the ‘Verse

My very favorite Avenger has finally made his way into the Marvel Comics Universe. Ok, so he’s not actually an Avenger, but if I have to pick a favorite character from the movies it’s definitely Agent Coulson.

In the first five issues of Battle Scars, the character “Cheese” has been the right hand man of Army Ranger Marcus Johnson. In this week’s issue #6, “Cheese’s” identity has finally been revealed to be none other than Agent Phil Coulson….and the crowd goes wild.

When Agent Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, originally appeared in the movies, fans were skeptical about this non-universe person being a major player in the films, but his super power is just simply being awesome and he has quickly gained a fan base. Battle Scars writer, Chris Yost, is keeping the movie character qualities that fans love in the comic version of our favorite S.H.I.E.L.D hero wrangler. “The future is beginning here, and Agent Coulson’s going to find himself in the middle of it. This isn’t the last you’ve seen of either man, so keep watching!”

Dark Horse Presents: Riven

Horror fans get ready because Dark Horse Presents #14 will be introducing readers to a new tale of terror. In stores on July 18th, and written by Bo Hampton (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow) and Robert Tinnell (The Wicked West), issue #14 will offer the first look at the Riven graphic novel, which is the 3rd collaboration from Hampton and Tinnell.

With the graphic novel's release date announced as August 22nd, Riven is a three-part story centered around “a gorgeous teenager with a mysterious, gruesome past, becoming aware of a growing, terrifying power inside her body, triggered by the touch of the full moon, eager to break free.”

Writer Robert Tinnell said, “Dark Horse Presents is bringing together such a great mix of talent and stories at the moment that it’s honestly an honor to be included in the book. From all the chatter Dark Horse Presents has been generating it’s clear the book is appealing to discerning, articulate readers—and those are precisely the sorts of people we hope are attracted to Riven.”

The Drama Comes to a Close

Those following the DC vs. Chris Roberson drama on Twitter, and on almost every comic news outlet on the internet, have a treat today. Roberson has given an exit interview of sorts with The Comics Journal answering all the questions that can’t fit in the 160 character Twitter format.

In speaking about his controversial and highly publicized Twitter feeds, Roberson said, “…to be quite honest I thought that that would be read by the few thousand people who follow me on Twitter, who would then shrug and it would be no big deal. I’m not walking back from those statements in the slightest, but I was in no way prepared for the kind of response it got.”

Before We Cared - KATY PERRY

$

Katy Perry is an important figure in popular music.

I’m sorry, but it’s true.

It seemed for a while like she might fade into obscurity, that maybe the success or her first album was a fluke, boosted by the novelty of her first single, “I Kissed A Girl.”

But everything changed when Katy Perry became the second artist in the 53-year history of the Billboard Hot 100 to have five songs from the same album reach Number 1.

The only other artist to do this was Michael Jackson with Bad.

Now, Teenage Dream isn’t a terrible album (the title track in particular is an almost perfect pop song, in my opinion), but it’s certainly no Bad. But still, five songs in the number-one spot. From the same album. I know that popularity doesn’t equate to quality, but that’s a level of saturation that you can’t just ignore.

Katy Perry is one of our most important pop stars, and it seems like she’s going to be here for a while.

Given what a major figure Perry is on the pop scene, maybe we should take a closer look at her first album, and no, I don’t mean 2008’s One of the Boys. The album that gave us “I Kissed A Girl” is actually Perry’s second album. Her first album was released in 2001 under the name “Katy Hudson” and it’s… a little different from her latter work.

Have a look at some of the lyrics and see what I mean:

But I took up this hammer
And laughed at all Your slander

And pierced Your hands

With the nails of blasphemy

Yes, that’s right. Katy Perry’s first album is a Christian Rock album.

Now, this isn’t an Amy Grant situation, where an artist who was successful in the world of Christian music decided to make songs with a more secular theme (a move that I will henceforth refer to as “the reverse Bob Dylan”). This album, titled Katy Hudson, didn’t make the charts, hardly anyone noticed it, and the label that released it actually went under about two months later.

I guess you could say that Katy Hudson was no Amy Grant.

Zing!

The more cynical among us might say that’s it obvious what happened then: Katy realized that she wasn’t making any money with this deeply personal expression of faith, so she switched tactics and started selling mediocre songs with sex. I guess I’m the more cynical among us, because I think that’s exactly what happened.

Okay, that might be a little harsh. After all, Katy was only sixteen years old when Katy Hudson was released. Her motives for switching genres may have been less calculating and more based on hurt feelings. If I released an album when I was sixteen and no one liked it, my response would probably be similar.

“You know what? Fine! If you don’t like my album, I’ll just take off my clothes! There! Is that enough? NOW DO YOU LIKE ME?”

That strategy probably wouldn’t have worked as well for me as it did for Katy, but that’s beside the point.

So, why didn’t anyone like Katy Hudson to begin with? I’m not extremely well versed in Christian music, but I know enough to say that people probably didn’t like it because it isn’t very good.

Has anyone ever made a good album while wearing a hat like that?

Musically, Hudson is an awkward mish-mash of 90’s alternative and contemporary Christian praise music, except without any of the things people like about those two genres.

The instrumentation is bland mixture of drums, guitar, bass and plenty of those generic strings that producers sometimes throw onto a song to make it sound more “inspirational.” The only notable exceptions are “Growing Pains”, which has a cabaret/musical theatre vibe with its heavy use of piano and weird call-and-response lyrics, and “Spit”, which opens with 20 seconds of record scratching and sent me into a panic at the thought of Katy rapping. Thankfully, she doesn’t.

There’s nothing exciting about this music, but it would work well in the service of someone who knew how to write a decent hook. Katy Perry’s recent output shows that she definitely possesses that skill, but Katy Hudson? Not so much.

Actually, it’s not that this album is completely lacking in hooks.

There are a couple of choruses that have the potential to be catchy, but Perry’s obnoxious caterwauling is like a brick wall that prevents melodies from getting stuck in your head. She has named Alanis Morissette as one of her influences, and it shows in the way she tries to sing these songs. Someone probably should have told her that you’re not suppose to warble the lyrics like that unless you’re expressing a powerful emotion or you have a voice people enjoy hearing.

I’m not trying to be mean. Katy Perry is a fine singer who’s capable of hitting every note she tries for. On her best songs, her voice can even portray a sense of alluring vulnerability. But this album has her stretching out words and vocalizing like she was Mariah Carey. But she’s not Mariah Carey, and her attempts to sound “soulful” in these songs are grating, not impressive.

The lyrics recall any number of songs that have been projected on the walls of non-denominational churches, but they miss the mark for being material for the Sunday-evening worship service. However, they’re too generic to be appreciated on any other level. Katy Hudson is stuck in a Contemporary Christian Music no-mans-land: too personal for an entire church to sing along to, but not confessional enough to express any real emotion.

As I said before, Katy Perry was only sixteen when Hudson was released.

I think it’s important to keep that in mind. This album is not particularly good, but I have to admire Perry’s bravery in putting herself out there like she did. In a way, it’s kind of sad that she felt she couldn’t be successful by being herself, that she had to transform into this overly-sexualized, vapid-looking pop princess.

It’s even sadder that she was right.

You did this, America. I hope you're proud of yourself

But I don’t know Katy Perry and I can’t pretend to understand her decisions.

Maybe it’s not like that at all. It’s possible that her interests just shifted from performing Christian music to performing secular music; it wouldn’t be the first time someone’s tastes changed as they matured.

After all, Perry included a song on her 2010 album called “Who Am I Living For.”

With lyrics like “It’s never easy to be chosen, never easy to be called” and references to the Biblical figure of Esther, it portrays a young woman at a crossroads in her life, struggling to come to terms with her place in the world.

It is, in short a song that wouldn’t be out of place on her first album, except for one minor detail: It’s actually enjoyable to listen to.

ANDY LAU Might Help IRON MAN Fight THE MANDARIN

Casting negotiations and plot rumors are all over the place with Iron Man 3. The latest news says Andy Lau is in talks to join the cast and The Mandarin is no longer a single villain, but a terrorist organization.

Neon Punch first reported that Andy Lau is in final negotiations to have a part in the third movie in the Iron Man franchise. He is latest in a lot of recent casting news for the film which has Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce signed on to play villains along with Jessica Chastain who will play a scientist.

But just who will Lau be fighting? Neonpunch has updated their story multiple times, right now they say that Lau's character wil be "an OLD FRIEND OF TONY STARK'S who will use China's armored heroes to HELP Iron Man defeat 'The Mandarin.'"

While I still personally don't think The Mandarin will be a part of the movie, if the name does show up in the film it will be the terrorist group that Extremis is sold to.

Also I'm sure Neon Punch will update this very soon, but Scarlett Johansson actually will NOT be reprising her role of Black Widow, but she does want to see the character have her very own movie.

STAN LEE Talks About Seeing His Characters On The Big Screen

Stan Lee is a cool guy and the creator of some of the biggest comic book characters that have ever existed. Today we hear what he thinks about the film versions of his characters.

Talking to IamRogue, Lee said a little bit about the Avengers and the success of the films based on his creations. With reboots, sequels, and more adaptation on the way, he also talked a bit about his favorite characters and who he wants to see next.

We all know there will be a sequel for The Avengers, but who does Stan Lee want to see join the team? "Oh I’d be happy if they add the Black Panther and maybe Dr. Strange," Lee said. "Those two and probably Ant-Man, which I think they are working on. Maybe I’ll play a little role in that."

Ant-Man is indeed in the works right now, But what about his other characters that Marvel doesn't have the film rights to? 20th Century Fox is hoping to reboot Fantastic Four and Daredevil. The two titles didn't do terribly at the box office but they didn't create a frenzy like Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, or even The Hulk. "I think it wouldn’t be a bad idea to reboot The FF, and Daredevil, those two. Because Daredevil didn’t do as well as I hoped it would. Yet I love the character so I would love to see him rebooted."

Like most writers, he is still very proud of his work and the characters and stories he's created. Talking about seeing his work adapted to movies he said, "I never imagined I’d see any of my characters become movies. But this was a logical thing to do. It was smart. I’m amazed that DC didn’t beat us to it with the Justice League. But you’ve got to hand it to Marvel."

TOM CRUISE Will Take on TOP GUN 2 Before MI:5

Tom Cruise is a busy guy, but his scheduling still has him attached to work on Top Gun 2 before he moves on to play the fifth installment in the Mission: Impossible films.

Talking to THR recently, Adam Goodwin, Paramount Film Group President, said a good deal of information about what Cruise will be working on next. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell will be back for the follow up which will either have the original actors in a lot of make-up or having the characters come into the future of flying and see what the new technology is all about.

There still remains to be very low amounts of info about the plot, and by low I mean, I have no idea what the story might be. Tony Scott, and Jerry Bruckheimer are working their magic with moving the characters into the 21st Century. It'll be interesting to see what they do.

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S5E3: Hidden

$

Another disgruntled whizkid decides to fulfill his ultimate revenge fantasy by arming a nuke and planning to use it to destroy Smallville. Naturally.

Clark, those powers you’re still missing?

Yeah, now would be a good time to get ‘em back.

The Random:
1. This Gabriel kid tells Chloe he’s going to destroy Smallville and that she should understand from all their work together at the Torch. Meanwhile, after over 80 episodes, I’ve NEVER seen this kid once, at the Torch or otherwise.

2. Did we just see a Kryptonian symbol for Zod on the spaceship Lex commandeered, and on Lionel’s padded walls? Yes. Yes, we did.

3. There’s evidently no psych eval on the MIT entrance exam, or in the military department in charge of nuclear codes, because Gabriel and his dad got on right on through.

Only a genius from MIT can figure out the answer to the conundrum of
“Rock, Paper, Scissors” is “gun.”

The Awesome:
1. The Kents’ reaction to Clark and Lana sleeping together is pretty damn funny, especially since Papa Kent is furious and Mama has that mix of wanting to be mad…and wanting to high five the two of them.

2. Lionel’s awakening and escape—with Clark’s powers—as Clark flatlines is a powerful scene and incredibly well done.

3. Clark gets his powers back just as the missile takes off and makes one giant leap for Kryptonian kind by beating the crap out of it. Now that’s a feat of strength.

“Dammit. I’m going to have to go and get that now, aren’t I?”

The WTF?!:
1. Gabriel calls Chloe to warn her, but if he’s worked at the Torch for as long as he did he’s GOT to know that Chloe knowing something means that the plot is going to fail. He couldn’t have said something a bit more innocent, like, “Hey, meet me in a half hour at X,” and then stand her up?

2. Now if you took over a missile silo and were working on a very tight countdown, would you just leave to drive a few miles and run the risk of exposing yourself to the authorities because some girl called you for a ride? No. I wouldn’t either.

3. Of all the things they’ve had to explain over the years in this town, I really need to see how in the hell they explain not only how a missile disassembled itself in midair (A “malfunction?” Really?) and how a flatlined patient disappears from the hospital and then shows up alive miles away…and blown up.

“Gabe, slow down. Go over that last part about your master plan again.”
