FOG! Chats With THE SNOWTOWN MURDERS Director JUSTIN KURZEL

Based on horrifying crimes discovered in Snowtown, Australia in 1999, The Snowtown Murders is Justin Kurzel's directorial debut, a stark journey into a brutal subculture of suspicion, addiction and violence. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Cannes' Critics Week, the film follows Elizabeth Harvey (Louise Harris), a mother raising her three boys in a poor suburb. After her latest boyfriend displays pedophilic tendencies, she takes up with a new man, hoping for security but instead welcoming an even more vicious predator into her home. John Bunting (Daniel Henshall) is the moral compass of a self-appointed neighborhood watch who, fueled by cigarettes and beer, cast judgments on those living around them. Bunting enlists his crew in acts of sadistic vigilantism on those he considers deviants, and in the process takes Elizabeth's son Jamie (Lucas Pittaway) under his wing. The Snowtown Murders is an uncompromising film focused on the relationship between vulnerable teenager and a father figure who is revealed to be the worst kind of bully.
FOG! chatted with director Justin Kurzel about his startling and disturbing film.

The Snowtown Murders is based on a true story, what first attracted you to the project?
Well, I was grew up really close to the area and I guess, like everyone in Australia when the guys were arrested, I only really knew about the horror aspects of the case; the kind of attacks with the bodies in the barrel, that was reported as a bit of a freak show.   I didn’t really think much of it, and then I read the script and was completely surprised and shocked by the human story in it ; and I guess the story of Jamie Vlassakis and this young kid being seduced by this kind of father figure slash serial killer that I had no idea about it. The sort of point of view and a fresh perspective that I could tell that most of the country weren’t aware of, and I think for the first time saw a way of telling this story which I hadn’t seen before.

What responsibilities as a filmmaker did you feel that you had when it comes to dramatizing a true crime and how do you keep that from becoming exploitative?

Well this story I wanted to tell through the point of view of this kid and to me the themes of corruption of innocence and kind of nature versus nurture were kind of the driving thing. I didn’t want to make a horror film; I didn’t want the violence to be the leading character in the film. I guess I wanted to approach it in the most honest and truthful way, which is why we bought two books and we based it all off the transcripts of Jamie Vlassakis in the actual court hearings afterwards.  We did as many interviews as possible with people who were connected to the case. So every event in the film was as close as possible to the real events, and it’s a film that’s I guess more of an observation rather than a judgment or rather than a kind of exploitation of the more macabre aspects of the events.

Did you find that there was a concern when making it to try and understand and identify with the motivations of the actual people, or is it more about being true and accurate to the facts?

I think I guess the first thing that I was most focused on is a question of what would I have done if I was Jamie, and I guess growing up in this area and being surrounded by kids that were kind of desperately looking for kind of male mentors because they didn’t have fathers of their own, and the idea of kind of finding that sense of identity and masculinity through a kind of male mentor, I had an empathy with. I kind of completely understood. So the notion of this boy being attracted or seduced by this man was one that I could see, and I could understand, so that was the driving force behind the sort of story that we’re telling.  I guess the point of view that we’re kind of telling was how did the boy get kind of caught up in this situation, and then not excusing the choices that he made, but making people understand the sort of environment that we was in and the sort of pressure that he was under to be led into this sort of evil.

Were you able to meet with any of the real people involved, with their families, or was this strictly based on court records and books?

No, we interviewed people that were close to the family.  I mean I didn’t interview Jamie, I didn’t interview John, but we did interview people that were connected to the family and they gave us definitely an insight into the more domestic observations of the family, and the sort of man John was just within the home.

Out of sheer curiosity because I know the film came out in Australia, do you know if anyone has seen the film who is connected to the actual murders?

I don’t know if any of the perpetrators have seen the film, nor do I know what their reaction has been. We offered to have a screening for the families of the victims, and only one family decided to take up that offer while the others didn’t, which I completely understand and respect. I’m not aware at the moment of what sort of response or whether they even have seen the film, the characters that are depicted in the story of the film.

Were there any films that you referenced to prepare for this or any directors whose work who you exclusively looked at before you started production on this?

Not really.  It was kind of based on the actual events in the area that we filmed, I mean we shot this in the place where the murders happened, and had first time actors from the area, and I was very conscious in making sure that the area was the main inspiration in telling us what sort of film we wanted it to be and look like, as opposed to being inspired by any other directors or any other films.

What do you think made the community unique, that this could happen there? Do you think this is the kind of thing that could just happen anywhere under the right circumstances?

I think it could just happen anywhere.  I think it was probably a perfect storm in this particular area.  For a very long time it had been up against some pretty full on challenges; high levels of unemployment and poverty, and definitely very strong patterns of sexual abuse that kept on repeating themselves. I think there was a kind of apathy within the community about why this was happening and I feel that the community probably wasn’t feeling that it was being heard from authorities and government and it was just a perfect storm.  A well intended guy sat there and listened and formed an ideology about why it was all happening, and then I think inspired the community to do something about it. I think the horror of it or the tragedy of it is the fact that the ideology was exploited by John.  Suddenly the web that John created for the pedophiles; suddenly this community and especially this family and this boy suddenly found themselves trapped next to the devil.

What do you have coming up? What’s your next project? Have you decided on it yet?

I’m still deciding at the moment, there are a couple films in the UK and one in the US that I’m working on with script writers and just waiting on to see whether they’ll be ready to make this year, so they’re probably too early to kind of talk about.  I’ve written a script with my brother;  it’s a black comedy called Ivan Lendl Never Learned to Volley. So, I’m still making a film this year but it’s still too early to kind of start talking about really.

What are you currently geeking out on?

I’m gonna say – you stumped me, actually. I’ve been travelling with this film for so long that that’s all I’ve been thinking about.  I’ll tell you what I did see the other day that I really loved and I’ve become a bit obsessed with is Eastbound and Down We didn’t get it in Australia and I started watching it on DVD and it’s something I’m pretty impressed by.  I think there’s a certain kind of comedy there that is really great.

TURN ON YOUR HEART LIGHT: Creepy E.T. Hand Now Available To Freak Out the Little Ones

Let's face some cold hard facts, even though I loved E.T. (we all did) isn't there a small part of you that thought he was kinda creepy looking? I'm not saying that he was scary or anything, but if you stared at him long enough he sort of looked like a really tall slug creature with a hammerhead shark skull (I'm right, think about it).

But now there is something even more frightening available for Pre-Order, a glove made to look like E.T's hand that lights up and (shudder) can be used to act out particular scenes from that Elliot/E.T slash fiction you're always downloading.

I don't know about you but this has "Bad Touch" written all over it.

CONTEST! Win David Moody's AUTUMN Series!

$

David Moody's Autumn series catapults the human race into the most desperate scenario to date—the dead are returning.

Without ever using the ‘Z’ word, the Autumn series offers a new perspective on the traditional zombie story. There’s no flesh eating, no fast-moving corpses, no gore for gore’s sake.

Combining the atmosphere and tone of George Romero’s classic living dead films with the attitude and awareness of 28 Days Later, this horrifying and suspenseful series is filled with relentless, cold, dark fear.

In the first book, Autumn, a terrifying disease has wiped out 99% of the population in less than 24 hours, but for the very few who have managed to stay alive, things are about to get much worse. Animated by “phase two” of some unknown contagion, the dead begin to rise. At first slow, blind, dumb and lumbering, quickly the bodies regain their most basic senses and abilities—sight, hearing, locomotion—as well as the instinct toward aggression and violence. Held back only by the restraints of their rapidly decomposing flesh, the dead have only one goal—destroy those who have survived the plague, who now find themselves outnumbered 1,000,000 to 1...
While the first Autumn novel focused on those who escaped the city, Autumn: The City follows those who didn’t.  On a Tuesday like any other, Donna Yorke gets to the office early.  It’s only when her co-workers start filing in that she realizes anything is wrong.  Suddenly, they start dying: quickly, painfully, and without warning.  It’s the same all over the city, the country, and maybe even the world—99% of the population has been wiped out in minutes.

Now, Donna is alone in a new, catastrophic world where bodies litter the streets, homes, even the revolving door of her office building.  Alone, until she finds another survivor.  Until the dead begin to move, slowly and blindly.  Until the dead begin to attack.
In Autumn: Purification, the heroes from both previous books must work together to survive in this terrifying new world.
In Autumn: Disintegration, forty days have passed since the world died. Billions of corpses now walk the Earth. A group of eleven men and women have survived against the odds. On an almost daily basis, they attack the dead with brutal ferocity, tearing through them with utter contempt. Somewhere nearby, out of sight and out of earshot, is another group who adopted a completely different survival strategy. Where the others have used brutality and strength, these people have demonstrated subtlety, planning and tactics.

A series of horrific events force the two groups together. Backed into a corner and surrounded by hundreds of thousands of corpses, they all know that their final battle with the dead is about to begin. Do they attack first, or is it time to take a different approach? The decision splits the group, and with the lives of everyone at stake, no-one is prepared to back down.
In the thrilling conclusion, Autumn: Aftermath, it's been three months since a killer disease wiped out 99% of the population. Three months since the dead reanimated. The living are few and far between now, and those who are still alive stick together to give themselves the best chance of continuing to survive. One small group has established a community on an inhospitable island. A second, much larger band of refugees have made their base in a fortified castle on the coast, overlooking the ocean. When the survivors from the island unknowingly encroach on the other group's territory, tensions are immediately raised.

The condition of the dead is continuing to deteriorate, and as their bodies decay, the creatures' aggression increases. Under siege from an army of thousands upon thousands of corpses, the survivors on the mainland launch a desperate attempt to take over the island and claim it for their own.

Are we entering mankind's final days? In the aftermath of the disease, will the last survivors destroy each other, or will the dead destroy them all?
And we're giving away a complete set to FOG! readers!

To enter, please send an email with the subject header "AUTUMN" to geekcontest @ gmail dot com and answer the following question:

If a zombie apocalypse arrived, what three things would you take with you before you fled your home?

Please include your name and address (U.S. Residents only. You must be 18 years old).

Only one entry per person and a winner will be chosen at random.

Contest ends at 11:59 PM EST on April 1st, 2012.

Netflix Could be New Land For TERRA NOVA

If you were a fan of Terra Nova and cried a lot yesterday when I told you the show was cancelled, today you will happy to hear that Netflix could be picking up the dino drama.

THR reports that the streaming service has expressed some interest in the show when it was being shopped around the networks looking for a new broadcaster. With the recent news that Netflix is also in meeting with cable providers to create something new, and the fact that they are starting to push original scripted shows along with the revival of Arrested Development, this may be the show that pushes Netflix to create something new in the world of streaming entertainment.

On Monday, Fox announced that it was dropping the costly show which used around $10 million to $20 million just for the pilot alone. That's more than most indie films and many foreign films. 20th Century Fox decided to shop the show around and it looks like Netflix was the first to bite.

The show stars Jason O'Mara and Stephen Lang and the studio believes that it has international appeal that could help Netflix expand globally.  The discussions are still in the very early stages but Netflix has been looking for new shows and if it can get the show for a good price, it may be able to alter the budget and keep the dinosaurs out of the tar pits.

Terra Nova was averaging 7.5 million total viewers, which is not terrible, but it was too expensive to keep going especially since the two-hour finale only drew a 2.1 rating, matching its series low. As Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly said at the TCA's "[Terra Nova] was an exciting bet to take."

Now we get to see if Netflix will make the same bet

Here are two new trailers for the upcoming films Bad Ass and What to Expect When You're Expecting.

The two movies are on completely different sides of the spectrum. Bad Ass is inspired by a viral video with violence whereas What to Expect is based on a book about bringing a new life into this world. Check out the two new trailers right after the break.

Bad Ass is the new vigilante drama action that stars Danny Trejo. The film is inspired by the Epic Beard Man video that went viral last year.  Ron Perlman and Charles S. Dutton are also in the cast which was directed by Craig Moss.  Trejo's character is a Vietnam vet who returns to America only to be shunned without a job or the things he left to protect. Forty years later becomes a celebrity hero after he protects an elderly black man from some skinhead. The movie changes tone after his best friends is killed and the cops do nothing about it.

Bad Ass will have a limited release on April 13, 2012.

The second trailer for What to Expect When You're Expecting came out recently.
The film follows seven couples as they prepare for parenthood. Based on the book by Heidi Murkoff, the story documents all the thrills, aches, and pains, of getting ready to have a child. The ensemble film stars Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock, Rodrigo Santoro, Ben Falcone, Joe Manganiello and Thomas Lennon.

What To Expect is set for release on May 11, 2012.

A new trailer for The Avengers arrives, but it's in German. It does have a new scene though.

Thank to a translation provided by latino-review, we can tell that Captain America and Tony Stark don't quite get along well. Other than these extended parts, there's really nothing new. I did include a treat for you fans of both The Avengers and Friends. Check it out after the break.

    Here’s the translation:

Tony: And following orders is obvious not my style.
Cap: And everyone knows that style is all you care about.
Tony: From all the people around here, who wears the most figure-hugging outfit?

The second addition is the last scene. Stark is literally prodding Bruce Banner testing his patience, trying to get Banner to Hulk out.

    This is the translation:

Tony: I promise a stress-free environment. No surprises.
    Banner: Ow!
    Cap: Hey!
Tony: You really got it under control, don’t you. What’s your secret? Relaxing Jazz, Bongo Drums?
Cap: Is everything like a joke to you?
    Tony: If it’s funny!

They'll be there for you. When the skrull start to fall.

(Yes I know there are no skrull in the movie)

I'm looking forward to a new Zorro movie, and now it looks like Ricardo de Montreuil might be the director that's going to make Reborn happen.

Variety reports that the Peruvian director is a current contender to direct the reboot for the famous swordsman. Montreuil made a name for himself with the short film The Raven. Universal picked up the rights to expand the title back in 2010 and the movie will come out later this year.

The new story of Zorro Reborn tries to reinvent the character and his mythology moving him into the future and trying to get revenge against an "evil tyrant and his gang of mercenaries."  A few writers have already worked on scripts. Harker screenwriters Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy being the latest to pen a draft.

Gael Garcia Bernal is the likely star of the film and De Montreuil is set to direct some screen tests for him soon. There is no deal for him to direct the full film yet, but he is a name that's being looked at quite heavily.

20th Century Fox is set to be the studio behind the project with Mark Amin, Cami Winikoff and David Higgins set to produce for Sobini Films.

He's known for taking on little fishy teeth, but now Piranha director Alexandre Aja is looking at vampire fangs in Undying Love.

According to Deadline, the director is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to take on the adaptation of the graphic novel from Image Comics. Created by Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman the story revolves around an ex-soldier who fall in love with a vampire. If he really wants to be with her he has to prove himself by talking on her creator in the Hong Kong underworld. The only catch is that her creator is also protected by a monster army.

Coker and Freedman also wrote the script for the adaptation that will be produced by Michael De Luca, Stephen L’Heureux and Benderspink. Aja is also known for having directed The Hills Have Eyes.

    Now on Blu-ray April 24, 2012

    Alec Guinness stars in John le Carré’s classic Cold War spy drama;
Blu-ray debut includes an exclusive new interview with the director and deleted scenes

An intricate drama hailed as one of the finest ever made for television, John le Carré’s classic Cold War-era spy drama Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy debuts on Blu-ray from Acorn Media on April 24, 2012, featuring an exclusive new interview with director John Irvin. Oscar® winner Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia) leads an all-star ensemble cast with the performance of a lifetime in his BAFTA-winning role as George Smiley, a retired spymaster recruited to find a mole in the British intelligence service. This 1979 BBC miniseries garnered universal critical acclaim for its stellar ensemble cast, literate writing and intricate plots. The Blu-ray debut coincides with the home video release of the recent film adaptation starring Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), which received Oscar® nominations for best screenplay and best actor. This Blu-ray 2-disc set includes six episodes, along with an exclusive 29-min. interview with director John Irvin, 27-min. interview with John le Carré, deleted scenes, subtitles, and more ($59.99, www.AcornOnline.com). Acorn Media previously re-released Tinker and Smiley’s People in October 2011 as DVD 3-Disc Sets ($49.99).

No doubt remains: a mole has infiltrated the Circus, code name for the British Secret Intelligence Service. It can only be one of four men operating at the very highest level. Sidelined agent George Smiley is covertly tapped to root out the mole, a task that requires a painstaking dig through the double-blind world of Cold War-era espionage and his own past. Raul Oaida is just a kid from Romania who decided to make a tribute video to the now defunct US Space Shuttle program.

And he did it with some Legos, a giant helium balloon and a video camera.

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S4E4: Devoted

Kryptonite in the Gatorade is turning the football team into mindless devotees of the cheerleading squad.

Seriously, if you need a magic potion to get a football player to pay attention to you, you’re cheerleading wrong.

    I haven’t had a drop and I’m totally paying attention…

    The Random:
    1. We still only see two types of activities in Smallville High, sports and the Torch. Well, that’s if you discount sex and attempted murder.

    2. Lex’s locker room speech about never giving up on things was half to the football team, half to Clark personally. Oh, who am I kidding? It’s all for Clark.

    3. I guess the cheerleaders controlling the water supply never thought that random people would be able to just go up and sample some on account of, you know, they’re rarely paying attention to it.

“I’ve been here two days and I’ve been nearly killed half a dozen times.
    This school is awesome!”

    The Awesome:

    1. I really should’ve gone to a high school that allowed the cheerleaders to wear midriff exposing cheerleading outfits all the time. Instead, I stupidly went to an all boys’ school, and all our skirts had to be above the knees…

    2. Anytime slutty Chloe rears her whorish head, I’m thankful for the wackiness that Kryptonite brings to our world each week.

    3. When these girls throw pool parties, they go all out and Clark earns his Investigative Reporter Badge by taking one for the team and hooking up with the head cheerleader. Luckily the girls in this school are seven kinds of loose.

Dude, unless she’s got Kryptonite in her pocket you have NO excuse…

    The WTF?!:
    1. Another assassination attempt at Smallville High, this time before we even get to the credits. How does this school stay open, or do the authorities just figure, “Eh, it’s Kansas. Screw it,” and go about their business?

    2. How exactly does a group of borderline braindead cheerleaders devise this master plan with Kryptonite water? Hell, I'll join the cheerleading squad if one of them can even spell Kryptonite.

    3. So, now the students are having an after hours pool party…at the school. This is the same pool where students have almost drowned, been turned into old people, and been shot at and the school administration felt, “Sure, this is a great idea, what could possibly go wrong, we trust these kids.” Wow.

“Give me a K! Give me an R! Give me…uh… give me a…7? Screw it, give me a beer.”

Nickelodeon's best shows were during the 90's. The cable network has seemed to realize this recently and has given the order for 40 episodes of the game show Figure It Out.

In a press release from the network, It was announced that production of the 40 new episodes will start in April with Jeff Sutphen acting as host. The show challenges celebrity guests to guess the unique talents and skills of the kid contestants.

Marjorie Cohn, Nickelodeon's President of Development and Original Programming said "Figure It Out is a show that celebrates kids and their wonderful and often bizarre talents." She added, "In this internet age where kids are expressing themselves online, it feels timely to give them a TV platform to showcase those talents in a uniquely Nickelodeon way."

In each episode, the panel of celebrities  would have to ask yes or no questions while being hit with "messy visual and tactile clues." The contestant wins a prize for each round that the panel is unable to figure out the talent or skill. If all three rounds go by without a correct guess, they win the grand prize and then, of course, the talent is revealed.

Figure It Out was created by Kevin Kay and Magda Liolis and it aired from 1997 to 1999 for four seasons. At the time Summer Sanders was the host and the the celebrity panel included stars like Kenan Thompson, Coolie, Jack Hanna, Evander Holyfield, Joe Namath, Michelle Trachtenberg and Chris Jericho.

SILENT HOUSE — Japanese Game Show Won't Translate to Film

Not all mediums are created equal.

Days of Wine and Roses would not make a good animated film.

Moneyball would not migrate well into a puppet performance.

And not every Japanese game show should grace the big screen as a feature.

Let’s get this straight: I am a prude.

Nevertheless, Japan's Silent Library (Gaki no Tsukai) offered a fair number of moments blending pain, silliness and odd things only Japanese laugh at. Leave this subject matter to age quietly in its own TV medium.

But directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau would have none of that.

    No, sir.

Kentis and Lau, you may recall, gave us the 2004 hit Open Water about a vacationing couple who squander a perfectly good hotel room for several days of bobbing in the sea. (The film wouldn’t translate well into a play, but might make a cracking good puppet show. I digress.)

So our husband-and-wife directing duo take Silent Library, call it Silent House and turn Elizabeth Olsen loose to find her way out minus all structure and rules. Instead of a library, Sarah (Olsen) and her father (Adam Trese) arrive to fix up a creepy old lakeside house. But don't hold your breath. There isn’t a laugh within a light year and I was waiting for one.

For instance, where were the hazard cards?

And why weren’t we told of the consequences up front?

Anticipation is a comedic key, but we are denied that element. Instead, Sarah screams in this room and that one. We hear a cornucopia of thumps and creaks and see interesting lighting. And while that's all fine, no one holds Sarah down and yanks out one of her nostril hairs with tweezers while trying not to laugh. No one. Isn't that the correct payoff?

Despite the excellent location scouting of Scott Tankel, I must give this swing-and-a-big-miss picture one and a half stars out of five.

You’d almost think they were trying to make a horror film.
