"Hail to the Chief, Baby": Dynamite Announces ARMY OF DARKNESS: ASH FOR PRESIDENT

Election season is upon us, and many Americans are searching for the right candidate to get behind this fall. Thankfully, Dynamite Entertainment arrives just before the end of the primaries to announce the entry of our own Independent candidate, Ashley J. Williams, in the all-new one-shot special, Army of Darkness: Ash for President!

He's faced off against demons in Hell. He's battled the dead in the future. He's even combated the armies of darkness in space. But Ash Williams has never gone up against evil in an arena like this: the political arena! From Elliott Serrano, the writer who brought you Ash Saves Obama, comes the off-beat adventure that answers the question: "What if Ash Williams ran for President of the United States?" When the Necronomicon Ex Mortis gives him a cryptic message, Ash Williams enlists the help of a beautiful psychic to help him track down the agent of The Great Darkness, an evil so great that it threatens both humankind and the demon realm. But what happens when the search for truth takes Ash on a trail that he never expected... the campaign trail? Army of Darkness: Ash for President is the one-shot Election Special that America deserves, illustrated with star-spangled flair by artist Diego Galindo.

"The Army of Darkness: Ash for President is a thematic sequel of sorts to my Ash Saves Obama mini-series," says writer Elliott Serrano. "With Ash Saves Obama, I was poking fun at all the ridiculous merchandising that surrounded Obama's first term as President. With the new election special, I get to have fun in the political realm and with the wacky things that politicians will often say. No matter what side of the aisle you're on, both sides have said their fair share of things that are just begging to get poked at."

"In 2004, we launched our company with the candidate we believed in the most, and that candidate was, of course, Ash Williams," says Dynamite CEO and Publisher, Nick Barrucci. "Over ten years later, I'd say it paid off well for us. This year's presidential race has been one of the most talked-about in decades, and casting your vote for Ash this August is sure to pay off for comics readers from both political parties."

Get Carter Back

Written by Brian Saner-Lamken

ABC finally canceled Marvel’s Agent Carter last week. The short-run winter series, which spelled the fall and spring halves of Agents of SHIELD these past two years, had been a ratings disappointment. Once star Hayley Atwell was cast by the network in a potential regular-season legal drama, now picked up to series, writing met wall.

You can’t entirely blame ABC, who clearly wants to be in business with Atwell.

SHIELD itself has hardly been a ratings bonanza — due in part to ongoing identity crises, tensions between Marvel’s film and television enterprises that leave the big-screen blockbusters bereft of nearly any reference to (and, thus, what should be no-brainer promotion of) the show, and the general demands that “peak TV” has put on viewers’ time.

I’ve enjoyed both SHIELD and Carter, however, even as what they do well makes my frustration over what they could be doing better all the greater.

Justin Jordan Makes His Dynamite Debut With EVIL ERNIE: GODEATER!

Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of
Chaos! Comics' Leading Madman
Evil Ernie is back to celebrate his 25th Anniversary, courtesy of acclaimed writer Justin Jordan (The Strange Case of Luther Strode, Green Lantern: New Guardians) in his Dynamite Entertainment debut! The original psycho killer from the fan-favorite Chaos! Comics horror brand returns this summer in an all-new miniseries written by Jordan, featuring artwork by the talented Colton Worley (Project Superpowers: Blackcross), and jam-packed with bonus content!

In Evil Ernie: Godeater #1, something bad is coming. Something that could kill Heaven, Hell, and Earth itself: The Godeater. And the only thing standing its way is... Evil Ernie? Face it, we're probably all screwed! Dynamite Entertainment proudly welcomes Justin Jordan, the Harvey Award-winning writer of such horror hits as The Strange Talent of Luther Strode and Shadowman, as he debuts the all-new "Godeater" storyline, an event so epic in scope, it promises to shake the very foundations of the Chaos! universe!

"The original Evil Ernie series was one of the very first comics I saw that wasn't about superheroes and wasn't intended for an all-ages audience, and it changed how I look at comics. So being able to actually write a character who changed my life twenty-odd years ago is actually cooler than I can easily sum up," says Jordan. "I am doing my level best to make sure that fans of Ernie are getting something they have never seen before, while still being the character they've loved for the past couple of decades. I hope that they think it's awesome and horrifying, and that I got the character right."

Artist Colton Worley, whose many previous Dynamite projects include such atmospheric icons as The Shadow, Vampirella, and The Complete Dracula, says, "Hopefully fans will like what I've done with Ernie here, because I've had a lot of fun working on this book. Psycho-monsters, the undead, and a talking button -- what's not to like?"

In addition to the 22-page "Godeater" story, Evil Ernie #1 features considerable bonus material, including an in-depth interview with Justin Jordan about Evil Ernie and the Chaos! Comics universe, Ernie character designs by Colton Worley, and the first chapter of "Last Ditch Bitch", a serialized back-up feature written by Keith Davidsen (Reanimator) and illustrated by Cezar Razek (Doc Savage). As if one potential doomsday wasn't enough, Dynamite delves further into the Chaos mythology with the introduction of Liv Halvorsen, lead singer of a Scandinavian Death Metal band... and an unwitting pawn in Ragnarok!

Written by Elizabeth Weitz

If you're an animation nut, the beauty of hand drawn illustrations cannot be lauded enough. In fact, in a world dominated by CG, finding the gorgeous swirls of ink and brush (or pen stroke or paint) vigorously animated on screen feels like stumbling upon a pot of gold.

And in this case, the pot of gold is called Orient City: Ronin and The Princess, a sumptuously decadent animated short created by the team of Ryan Colucci and Zsombor Huszka (the guys who brought you the acclaimed graphic novel R.E.M, which was also funded by Kickstarter) who have crafted a spaghetti-western-meets-samurai tale of revenge and righteousness that happens to take place in a vertical city where the space between the social classes is as simple as which level of Orient City you were born in.

Did I mention how amazingly exquisite the art is...Seriously, look at this film still:

Disney's way ironically named INFINITY line has had its plug pulled, reportedly costing the company a $147 million write-off.

While the move is hardly surprising, the mix of action figure collectables with unlockable on-screen personalities was an ambitious gamble.

If anything, it was an expensive way to mix Disney's multiple universes in one place.

Captain Jack Sparrow meets Pumpkin King Jack Skellington, and so on. To Star Wars, Pixar, Marvel infinity and beyond, until now.

Here's a look at five other toy lines cancelled to the disappointment of the few who loved them...

Dirk's continued success is the result of not only his hard work and talent, but also a commitment to building his readership and mentoring people trying to break into the industry through his Write-or-Wrong articles (and book).

His latest project, is a Kickstarter for a hardcover collection of the third volume of his Cthulhu-noir horror series, TALES OF MR. RHEE.

Dirk was generous enough to take some time to discuss the project, his Kickstarter and his upcoming projects.

Canned at Cannes: A Look at Festival Flops

Written by Erin Maxwell

The Cannes Film Festival is underway, and while it not the type of festival to garner excitement among the Trekkie and cosplay set, it does have its moments.

For a majority of the population, the red carpet strutting, the star-studded premieres and the posh gatherings on private yachts is what Cannes is all about. But for fans of schadenfreude, the French fest is also a source of great pleasure when it comes to spectacular film fails.

When a film bombs at Cannes, it doesn’t just gather a collection of bad reviews and meander on its merry way. The festival encourages mean spirited reactions from the moviegoers. The crowd will boo, they will hiss, they will scream and spit at the screen. All with the cast and crew of the film is a mere 10 feet away from them, ducking lower into their seats.

To bomb at Cannes is an event into itself.

It creates a large worldwide buzz than if a film was to perform well at the famous festival. For those who make it out alive with a bad film, it is a learning experience, or at least a humbling experience.

Some survive unscathed, while others fall into obscurity.

That said, let’s take a look a few of the biggest film flubs and disasters in Cannes history:

FOG! Exclusive Excerpt From Religious Parody APOCRYPHA NOW by Shannon Wheeler and Mark Russell

$

Are you a fan of two-time Eisner award winning New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler’s TOO MUCH COFFEE MAN? What about Mark Russell’s critically acclaimed comic book PREZ? Did you know that together they’ve created a bestselling, tongue-in-cheek but respectful retelling of the Bible, GOD IS DISAPPOINTED IN YOU? Well now they’re back and working together again, because every bestseller has a sequel, even the Bible.

Due out in bookstores on May 31, APOCRYPHA NOW is a faithful-yet-irreverent take on the best bits left out of the canonical Bible. Just like its predecessor, APOCRYPHA NOW is destined for the nightstand drawers of hipster hotels worldwide. Not familiar with the stories of the Midrash, the Apocrypha, Gnostic Gospels? Not to worry, this book tells you what the Bible didn't, only with LOL cartoons and smart and insightful prose.

“The stories of the Bible underpin history and our communal artistic and literary heritage, regardless of our religious affiliations, so Shannon and I created GOD IS DISAPPOINTED IN YOU because we thought it was important to make those stories accessible to, and entertaining for, a modern audience,” says writer Mark Russell. “Then we discovered that, like every best seller, the Bible has a sequel -- the Apocrypha -- so, of course, we had to tell these more obscure stories in our tongue-in-cheek way, and APOCRYPHA NOW was born.”

“We expected a lot of backlash from the religious community over GOD IS DISAPPOINTED IN YOU, but we were pleasantly surprised that the new, more liberal Christian community embraced it along with a mainstream audience,” says artist Shannon Wheeler, whose TOO MUCH COFFEE MAN celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. “These books are fresh and modern and truly funny, but they aren’t satire or parody. It’s great that ministers bought GOD IS DISAPPOINTED to help teach the Bible, and we hope an equally diverse crowd will discover whole new stories in APOCRYPHA NOW.”

After the jump check out two exclusive pages from the very smart and very funny book, APOCRYPHA NOW.

The Argument for Less Action in Your Nerdy Action Movie

Written by Ilan Mitchell-Smith

I think you and I are the same kind of nerd, so I feel like I can get right to the point about the action movies that they’re making for us nowadays. I’m happy to have them – don’t get me wrong; I remember the old days of waiting forever for any kind of superhero, fantasy, or scifi movie to come out, and the abundance of these movies that we have now is truly remarkable.

One thing I’ve noticed, though, is that they’re sometimes a little exhausting. This is only partly about the overuse of CGI technology that’s crammed into a lot of the nerdy movies they’re making for us. After all, CGI can be used for a lot of things, and it doesn’t have to be used for action and noise and busyness.

Allow me to stray from fantasy/superhero/scifi movies for a moment.

Review: A Look Back at DARWYN COOKE's BEFORE WATCHMEN

$

Review by Clay N Ferno

Before Watchmen was released in 2012 to the grousing of original co-creator Alan Moore and a blessing from the original series artist Dave Gibbons.

Fans at the time seemed to be evenly split on the matter as well, but greeted the new Watchmen books with the skepticism of a new Star Wars movie. I'd be interested in seeing a Venn diagram of original Watchmen fans and their reactions to both the limited prequel and also Zach Snyder's 2009 film adaptation.

In short, one would be hard pressed to find a more controversial DC property writ large. One of the men responsible for revisiting the Minutemen was Darwyn Cooke. His untimely passing last week spurred this review, but truth be told we've been thinking about these books for a long time.

Darwyn provided both the story and his unique Golden to Silver Age pulp magazine style illustration to Hollis Mason's story in Before Watchmen: Minutemen (6 issues) and also teamed up with Amanda Conner, co-writing her book,  Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre (4 issues).

If you were on the fence about these books, now is a great time to honor Darwyn's memory and rediscover this amazing work you may have overlooked.

World Fantasy, International Horror Guild, and Bram Stoker Award-winning author Joe Hill turns his attention to a legend—Tales From The Darkside.

Originally planned as a reboot for the storied series, Hill’s scripts for these never-broadcast television episodes allow the New York Times bestselling author to stretch his creative muscles, his effortless mastery of the twisted subject matter injecting new terrors into this silver screen legend.

Joining Hill in resurrecting this classic is Charles Paul Wilson III, known to many Joe Hill fans as the artist responsible for the nightmare vision made real in their most recent collaboration, Wraith, a graphic novel prequel to the Hill’s bestselling book N0S4A2. In Tales From The Darkside, Wilson’s tack-sharp interpretation of Hill’s vision is on display in a series of illustrations accompanying the scripts.
