Star Wars #4
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: John Cassaday
Colorist: Laura Martin
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

Star Wars #4 serves as the beginning of a new story arc dealing with the fallout of the Empire’s weapons factory on Cymoon 1 being destroyed.

The majority of the book takes place on Tatooine as Darth Vader arrogantly keeps Jabba the Hutt in check while maintaining the assurance of Imperial supplies provided by the mammoth gangster.

Jason Aaron was able to keep the dialogue between the two villains interesting. Vader was steadfast in his demands while Hutt surgically picked his spots to rub salt on the wound of recent Imperial damages. It reminded me of how one would book a match/story in professional wrestling with the idea being one person wins without the loser taking any damage to their credibility or character.

A new character is introduced with a shroud of mystery surrounding his identity.

However, their objective is clear: they want Han Solo. The reason is unknown but methods this new player uses to elicit information suggests that it can’t be good.

We get some time with Luke and Leia, but it came off as an exposition of what’s next as opposed to something in the story that has weight to it. The artwork of John Cassaday made this moment standout to full effect while conjuring up a bit of nostalgia by upping the violence factor in a scene that harkens back to a particular encounter between our favorite smuggler and a certain Rodian.

There is an awesome panel where Jabba comments to Vader “Who knew anyone of note was born on Tatooine, Eh?” as the Dark Lord stares out at the Dune Sea with the reflection of the planet’s two suns in the eyes of his helmet. It was visual poetry that was augmented by the coloring of Laura Martin which spoke volumes because of the emotional implications involved.

As I closed in on the final pages, I was ready to gripe about not learning what’s in the box that Obi Wan Kenobi left in his former estate for Luke in the last issue. My fears were put to rest as the final page reveals the re-introduction of a beloved character that prompts instant anticipation of the coming adventure.

The figure was drawn and colored with a gravitas that commanded attention and respect from the reader. There was a lot of story development in this issue and Jason Aaron does a masterful job of teasing certain elements that were too far apart before and now appear to be closer to each other than ever before.

Score: 4.5 out of 5

THE DEAD MILKMEN Flashback: A 'Punk Rock Girl' Love Story

The other day I was flitting around my Pandora when a blast from the past came up and I heard these majestic lyrics floating atop a familiar bass line:

Bitchin' Camaro, bitchin' Camaro
I ran over my neighbors
Bitchin' Camaro, bitchin' Camaro
Now I'm in all the papers

My folks bought me a bitchin' Camaro
With no insurance to match
So if I happen to run you down
Please don't leave a scratch

I knew who these lords of the punk are and they sure are not any banana peel smokin’ Danceteria types… They are The Dead Milkmen.

Unraveling The “True” Horror Of 1976’s 'THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN'

Written by Generoso Fierro
“Based on a True Story” has always been an excellent marketing tool for films going back decades. From Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which both took their ideas from the actions of real life Wisconsin serial killer and cannibal, Ed Gein, whose life had little to do with the aforementioned films to Kimberly Peirce’s Boys Don’t Cry which brutally stretched the truth to make a gender hero out of petty thief Brandon Teena, Hollywood has always taken liberties with “true” stories to suit its own political and sensationalist gains.

Most recently there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the Clint Eastwood biopic American Sniper, based on the memoirs of Chris Kyle, the Navy Seal who was certified as the deadliest sniper in US Military History.

It is clear that liberties had been taken with the history and even the memoirs written by Kyle himself for the film version, which drew the ire of many critics, who claimed that the film was just an attempt at propaganda by Eastwood.

The one thing we have learned from all of this is that the evoking of the term, “too soon,” may be the best strategy that Hollywood may have to adhere to when attempting the “Based on a True Story” film.

Then again, if your machine can spin the negative press that results from dramatic license, it has almost always meant more to a studio in ticket sales, which is sadly why the tagline exists in the first place.

Such was the case in 1976 when American International Pictures decided to premiere director/producer Charles B. Pierce’s drive-in film, The Town That Dreaded Sundown in Texarkana, Arkansas, the very town where some thirty years earlier, a masked man began slaughtering people in what would be known as “phantom attacks” of mostly young lovers in the dead of night. Family and friends of the victims were all still very much alive in 1976, and so a very powerful magnifying glass was held up to construction of characters and scenarios of director Pierce’s film. A film that is widely considered, along with Bob Clark’s Black Christmas, as one of the earliest examples of the film genre we now know as the slasher film.

So much more than just a new printing, this expanded, full-color hardcover Deluxe Edition of Bob Andelman's out-of-print biography explores the fascinating life of Will Eisner, detailing a more than 70-year career that in which he spearheaded comics for adult readers and created the first widely accepted graphic novel, A Contract with God.

From his childhood to famously turning down a proposal for Superman, to educating Army soldiers in P.S. Magazine and creating The Spirit, Eisner's personal and professional life is told in dramatic detail. Andelman spent almost three years interviewing Eisner prior to his passing, researching his life and work and interviewing friends, family, and colleagues including Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, Neil Gaiman, Denis Kitchen, Joe Kubert, Stan Lee, Jules Feiffer, Neal Adams, and Patrick McDonnell.

In addition to dozens of full-color images from Will's archives and private collections (not found in the original edition), this expanded Deluxe Edition includes a series of new interviews with Drew Friedman, Howard Chaykin, Darwyn Cooke, Sergio Aragones, Michael Uslan, and others, which clear the air on some topics left unfinished by the first edition, and add depth to the reader's knowledge of Eisner’s body of work.

It features an insightful introduction by Michael Chabon, and a Foreword by Neal Adams.

The Ogre continues to be a thorn in Gordon’s side, as Barbara has gone missing. Gordon continues to pursue him using his connection with Oswald to dig deeper into Gotham’s underworld.

Bruce does some snooping into the Wayne Foundation and uncovers some hard truths.

Meanwhile, Nygma moves on from the conclusion of last week’s cliffhanger like nothing happened and resumes his creepy crush on his co-worker.

THE GOOD

I will say this, although I’m still not extolling the virtues of Gotham, I am curious to see what happens. Maybe because I’ve made it this far, I’ve just committed myself to finishing out the season. Either way, I think the main storyline that keeps me coming back is Penguin’s arc.

It remains the heart of the show for me and I very much enjoy the actor portraying him. We didn’t get to see what Nolan’s Penguin would have been, but they couldn’t have done much better than Robin Lord Taylor.

As far as guest villains go, the Ogre was fun while he lasted.

He definitely made a lasting impression, which is more than I can say for the majority of villains of the week.

Since 2005 Tom Stillwell and his company Spinner Rack Comics have been making the kinds of comics that I want to read; fun comic books that everyone can enjoy. Everyone. All ages comic books. Not kiddie books, not books for mature readers…but books adults and kids can both enjoy.

What will you find in a Spinner Rack comic book? Colorful, larger than life heroes and villains partaking in fun filled action packed adventures. Explosions? Check. Rubber chickens? Check. Walking trees? Check.

If it’s not fun, it’s not in the book.

Now, they've launched the Fangirl Kickstarter Campaign, the independent publisher’s first young adult title. Honor Brigade and Toy Boy were both all-ages titles and Underneath was intended for mature readers,

Fangirl will be a 74 page graphic novel written by Tom Stillwell (Honor Brigade, Toy Boy, Underneath) and illustrated by artist Jessica Lynn (Airica). Stillwell & Lynn are joined on the project by colorist Zac Atkinson (Young Justice, Magic of Shazam, Transformers) and letterer Crank! (Battlepug, Revival, Hack/Slash).

Fangirl is the story of Alice, a gamer girl immersed in all things geeky. Things go awry for Alice when she witnesses a murder by a crooked cop at the big San Diego comic book con. Alice and her guildies do the only thing they can think of…hide in plain sight among the throngs of fandom at the world’s largest comic convention!

Fangirl is an entertaining mix of Scooby Doo and Veronica Mars. If it wasn’t for those meddling kids…

After the jump check out a preview of this fantastic new title and how you can support it so you can have a complete copy of your very own.

Gambit’s Cajun Justice – Louisana Style…Fast!

$
0
0
Years back, I did a column on the X-Men’s resident Cajun mutant, Gambit, every bit a product of 90s (over) design from the unnecessary head piece to the shoulder pads and trench coat mixed with the dark and brooding mystery.

But you know what?

I loved him from day one and by the time the Jim Lee and Chris Claremont X-Men #1 hit in 1991 and Gambit was made part of the Blue Team he was easily one of my favorite X-Men of all time.

But along the way, something just went…wrong with the character.

There’s literally nothing about this picture that doesn’t positively scream 90s.

After a while, there seemed to be a real struggle to keep the character relevant with successive writers trying to throw different wrinkles into him that included him at one point losing his vision and then having visions—irony that could only come from the Bad Idea Factory that is Chuck Austen’s mind—and becoming Apocalypse’s Horsemen of Death.

But there’s one story over the years that still stand out to me, and it’s one that really helped explain a lot of the characters’ motives while also finally putting to the bed the whole deep, dark secret of his past that was getting rather long in the tooth

Yep…this seems like a good idea…

When Bishop came to the team from the future, he immediately cast doubt on Gambit, reasoning that in his timeline, the X-Men were betrayed by one of their own and the only survivor was a man known as the Witness, who also happened to also go by the name LeBeau, Gambit’s own last name.

Last week, we ran a preview of Melissa de la Cruz's new book, The Isle of The Lost, the spellbinding prequel to the Disney Channel movie event, Descendants, the book chronicles the story of the teenaged sons and daughters of Maleficent, Jafar, Cruella de Vil and the Evil Queen.
Evil tree. Bad Apple?

Twenty years ago, all the evil villains were banished from the kingdom of Auradon to the Isle of the Lost–a dark and dreary place protected by a force field that makes it impossible for them to leave. Stripped of their magical powers, the villains now live in total isolation, forgotten by the world.

Mal learns from her mother, Maleficent, that the key to true darkness, the Dragon’s Eye, is located inside her scepter in the forbidden fortress on the far side of the island. The eye is cursed, and whoever retrieves it will be knocked into a deep sleep for a thousand years. But Mal has a plan to capture it. She’ll just need a little help from her “friends.” In their quest for the Dragon’s Eye, these four kids begin to realize that just because you come from an evil family tree, being good ain’t so bad.

Fight Club 2 # 1
Writer: Chuck Palahniuk
Artist: Cameron Stewart
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Cover Artist: David Mack
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $3.99
Publication Date: May 27, 2015

Fight Club has always been a manifesto for the shriveled soul, the consumer whore who buys, buys, buys to fill up the emptiness inside of themselves, or the quiet revolutionary who dreams of tearing down the world.

Re-reading it is like a salve to all the brokenness in the world and in yourself and for almost 20 years, it’s all that we (and I count myself among those jagged people) had.

Until now.

The sequel is here, but not in the form that you would think.

Not as a book where the pictures come together like your own personal movie.

No, author Chuck Palahniuk doesn’t want that, he wants you to “see” his vision, warts and all, and chose the comic medium to deliver his message.

And it’s perfect…but I had to read it twice before I got to that point (and I’ll tell you why in a moment)

COOL SHIRTS: A Look At T-Shirt Offerings From NerdKungFu.com!

By Stefan Blitz

There's no doubt that the boldest and most personal fashion statement anyone can make is in one's selection of t-shirt.  Personally, I love them.  It's an opportunity to show the world what pop culture I care about, a wonderful flashback to the past and a fantastic way to initiate any nerd discussion.

For this installment of Cool Shirts, I took a look at some of the shirts from Nerd Kung Fu, which might very well have the largest selection of pop culture t-shirts that I've ever seen.  If that isn't enough of a temptation, every order includes free U.S. shipping!  They also carry shirts in sizes small through 7XL and the site is filled with lots of nerdy trivia on the history of t-shirts!

Nerd Kung Fu isn't satisfied carrying just a huge t-shirt selection.  They are also currently selling a wide array of posters and a number of geek-centric ephemera including coffee mugs, shot glasses, pint glasses, blankets, wallets, buttons, magnets, playing cards, hoodies and much more.

There is something for virtually any nerdcentric provocation.

These are a few of my recent favorites.

JOHN THE MUNCH - Trapped in A World That He Never Made

Written by Erin Maxwell

All hail John Munch, Howard the Duck for the modern age.

Played by Richard Belzer, the sarcastic, conspiracy-loving Red Sea pedestrian of a hard-boiled cop has spent the better part of his career as a universe jumping red herring, skipping from show to show, sprinkling fairy dust everywhere he goes.

Originating on Homicide: Life on the Streets, the character of John Munch has spanned 20 years on over a dozen shows. John began as a wise-cracking Baltimore city cop, but his sarcastic demeanor, waif-like physique and dry wit has carrying him beyond the mere spin-off into new genres, including sci-fi and comedy.

He is, without a doubt, perhaps the most magical of primetime beings.

Munch’s ability to jump both shows and genres, as well as small screen to big screen, has made the man immortal. No cancellation or cast reshuffling can stop him. He can use Yiddish phrases faster than any old-world grandmother while jumping networks in a single bound. He can transition from sitcom to feature film parody back to serial drama before you can even say, “duh dum.”

But during all this jumping, Munch has changed. He was altered. He went from a secondary character to a magical story convention who represents the interests of the audience.

It is this metamorphosis that makes the man more Howard, than recycled beat cop.

WATCH The Kevin Smith-less 1995 CLERKS TV Pilot

Imagine for a moment that there was time that Kevin Smith didn't sell out and exploit his devoted fan base.

Crazy, isn't it?

But it did happen and now we have tangible proof.  The 1995 Clerks TV pilot.  Produced without Smith's involvement or blessing when he was filming Mallrats, the show is so far removed from the original film that one wonders why call it "Clerks" at all.  Reportedly both Brian 'O' Halloran and Jeff Anderson auditioned and weren't cast, but there's Silent Bob, Quick Stop, or colorful language.

The cast included Jim Breuer as Randall, Andrew Lowery (best remembered as the lead in My Boyfriend's Back) as Dante, and an ensemble that included Keri Russell,  Bodhi Elfman (renamed "Ray" after Smith reminded the producers that he owned the character of "Jay"), Rick Gomez, André Nemec, Noelle Parker and Jack Plotnick.

Still curious?  Check it out after the jump.  It's got to be better than Comic Book Men, right?

LAST MAN ON EARTH'S Toxic Masculinity Handles A Big, Black Problem

$
0
0
The Last Man on Earth currently is one of my favorite shows on TV.

Ice-T likes it too, as he said on his podcast, so I feel like I chose well.

The run-up to the show was a lot of “how can they keep this going?”

The “this” being Phil Miller (Will Forte) alone for an entire network show. But – spoiler alert – that solitude lasted not even two whole episodes, and since then we’ve seen Phil’s lament become Phil’s constant chagrin.

Last Man quickly moved from a riff on that Burgess Meredith episode of The Twilight Zone to, so far, a study in female-male relationships just left of Jean-Paul Sartre’s adage, “Hell is other people.”

And over time, nearly every scene in the show becomes a tennis match of horribleness with your loyalty to characters as the ball.

You may end up taking each character’s side by the end of any scene.

Phil is a captivating character.

His gleeful destruction of hurling bowling balls at full aquariums, and pilfering of Rembrandt paintings and the U.S. Constitution, soon is revealed as a veneer. Beneath it, Phil is roiling with end-of-his-rope hopelessness of trash piles, toilet pools, porn heaps and depression.

Definitely the look of a well man. Indubitably so.

As Phil’s Tuscon, Ariz., attracts people courtesy of his “Alive in Tuscon” signs across America, we get more layers to him. He’s by turns a blustering liar, a selfish conniver, a hapless faker whose schemes always backfire, a failed adulterer, a self-entitled narcissist, an adrift malcontent who has forgotten how to deal with people.

Phil’s also, at times, endearingly sweet, when he’s not trying to stuff down his actual feelings or actual morality. We see this when he confesses his interest in Melissa (January Jones), only to take it all back in an obvious lie when Melissa rejects him.

Or when he tries to maroon Todd (Mel Rodriguez) – Melissa’s lover – in the desert, stops the truck in a literal screaming fit of morality to back up to Todd, then peel off again and back up again until he finally lets him back into the truck.

So after Phil marries the wrong woman for him, falls for another and blows it, mistreats the man who does get her, and then tries unsuccessfully to get with a pair of female newcomers, he meets his biggest challenge and comeuppance yet: a tall, handsome, muscled ex-military man who’s much better looking and skilled.

He’s also named Phil Miller, adding to his threat as a usurper/replacement.

Hi there, Captain Dreamboat!

And, because he’s played by Boris Kodjoe, he’s black too.

In my eyes, this matters.
