THE WOLF OF WALL STREET: The F*cking Version

If you haven't already seen Martin Scorsese's latest flick The Wolf of Wall Street, allow me to introduce you to a boiled down version of the entire film (which will only take about four-and-a-half minutes out of your life) so that you can go about your day feeling a sense of inclusion even though you haven't actually watched the movie.

Of course, the only real dialog in this version revolves around slang for fornication, but trust me, you'll get the drift of the entire plot without the benefit of hearing any other words. It's truly a post modernistic take on the playground rules one would find at an elementary school...brilliant.

PyroPet: When You Absolutely, Positively Want to Add A Bit of Horror To Your Romantic Life

$

Everyone knows that when you want to add a hint of romance to your love life, you light a scented candle, put on some Al Green and let your natural inclination toward hornines take its course. But, if you happen to be the kind of person who is filled with a need to set living things on fire in order to feel all tingly inside, perhaps the PyroPet candle might help take your ickiness down a notch.

You see, this soon-to-be manufactured bit of wonder will allow those of you who enjoy arson to set fire to something which will slowly melt away leaving an intact skeletal structure (like your victims) while at the same time keeping up the pretense that you are a normal human being who lights candles when the need for loving takes over your body parts.

Now, that's what I call a compromise...

Before you scoff at a product that seems, well, a bit too creepy for well-adjusted people, you have to admit that the PyroPet is certainly cute (coming in two very romantic colors- pink and grey), will undoubtedly ignite the passion of both the psycho firebug and their unknowing sexual partner simply by illuminating the kill room with a golden glow of light that will soften the realization that people have been murdered there, and are cheap enough ($34) to be given as a token of love before the harsh reality of a fiery death will come to fruition.

A win-win if you ask me.

Pre-order yours NOW...and I promise I won't tell anyone about your little issue.

Knife-Chucking Mom Proves That Parenting Was A Lot Different When There Weren't So Many Child Protection Laws On the Books

Back when I was being raised in the 70s, parenting wasn't as insane as it is today. For instance, if a kid made it to the age of eleven without dying (or losing a major appendage) you were considered a good parent...that's all it took. Nowadays, in order to be given a stamp of approval from society, you have to wrap your kid in protective bubble wrap, provide them with 24/7 surveillance and tell them how talented and special they are even though they can barely function in the world thanks to a constant supply of co-dependency and Ritalin.

But perhaps this look back at a time when moms could set up a sheet of plywood in the backyard, place their offspring before it AND THEN CHUCK KNIVES AT THEM, all for the amusement of the neighbors, will make you parents re-evaluate your overly-protective rearing methods.

After-all, if the kids of yore survived cutlery being thrown at them by a parent clearly hopped up on goofballs (thank you Mother's Little Helpers), then I think your kids can play on the jungle gym without protective headgear.

Just saying.

Flashback To The Present: 'SILVERHAWKS' Shining or Tarnished?

Welcome to the first installment of Flashback to the Present and I’ll be your contributing writer, Charles Knauf.  First, a little background:

I’m in that weird generation between Generation X and the Millennials.  Being born in the infancy of the 80s, I adored most of the rad stuff you mid-to-late 30 somethings enjoyed in your youth; my earliest memories included playing around with my He-Man action figure, I was blown away by the ’89 Batman, and my father specifically told me at the video rental spot, “Now make sure to pick out a tape that says VHS, not Beta.”

However, my high school years were definitely formed through modern technology: I never had to step foot in a library after 9th grade, I had easy access to internet porn, CG effects were flooding film and television, and we all had cell phones.

Yet still, in this day and age, I find myself fondly remembering the times before the internet revolution of the 1990s.  Unfortunately, there’s a problem: some of my memories are hazy and I could very well be remembering them with nostalgic-colored glasses.

So, what’s a generational in-betweener like myself supposed to do?

The only thing to do: revisit the toys, games, shows and movies that I kind-of, sort-of remember at the time and see if it holds up.

My first review: the 1986 cartoon SilverHawks.

Divorced mom Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) may be falling for Albert (James Gandolfini), a sweet, funny, like-minded divorcé. But as their relationship blossoms, Eva befriends Marianne (Catherine Keener), who’s always complaining about her ex-husband. When Eva realizes that Albert is the target of Marianne’s rants, she begins to question her own perceptions about first impressions and second chances.
To celebrate the DVD and Blu-ray release of Enough Said on January 14th, let’s look at some top screen moments from the film’s leading lady, Julia Louis- Dreyfus. Julia’s resume means serious business with star performances in shows such as Seinfeld, Veep and Saturday Night Live. Believe it or not, her screen debut was given by comedy master Woody Allen in the 1986 hit feature Hannah and her Sisters. Working with the great writer/director clearly had a positive effect on her future career playing comedic roles.

50 SHADES OF VINO: E.L. James Pairs Alcoholism With Your Favorite Mom Porn Trilogy...Domination Has Never Tasted This Sweet

$

Full Disclosure: I tried to read the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy, I really did, but I found the dialog laughable, the sex banal and the characters boring and trite. Basically, when I'm reading porn, I like it a little more well, rough and dirty. But hey, if millions of suburban moms happened to enjoy a story that revolved around two poorly constructed characters doing it, well, I'm not about to get between them and their various hidden sex toys.

And now that Grey author E. L. James has seemingly acknowledged that the only way one could really enjoy her books is through the consumption of the loaded grape, it seems appropriate to share her newest endeavor, a pair of 50 Shades of Grey-inspired wines co-created with winemakers from California.

There's Red Satin (a decadent red blend of Petite Sirah and Syrah with flavors of black cherry, cocoa powder, creamy caramel and vanilla, leather and clove spice. Aged in a combination of new and neutral French oak barrels, this red blend is the perfect indulgence) or, if you prefer something a bit more submissive, there's White Silk (a delicate yet rich white blend of Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc White Silk’s flavors include floral aromatics of lychee and honey, tempered by flavors of crisp grapefruit, mineral and lush pear with a faint hint of butterscotch. Fermented cool and aged in stainless steel tanks, this white blend offers a delicately playful experience.). Regardless of preference, I'm pretty sure any choice you go with will help you make it through dialogs and scenes like this:

A MONKEY'S GUIDE TO FILMMAKING: Chimps Show You How to Make A Movie...Thank You Internet

$

Back in the heyday of edutainment short films (1940s-1960s), the Calvin Company (based out of Kansas City, Missouri) was certainly king. With a catalog of Fortune 500 companies needing training materials and educational clients like McGraw-Hill, Encyclopædia Britannica, and the U.S. Office of Education hoping to influence soft-minded children, millions of Americans learned how to be better citizens and workers through various 10-minute filmstrips.

And one of their best offerings happens to be a six-and-a-half minute masterpiece about making movies using chimps as stand-ins for humans...because that makes sense (although the chimps are called monkeys throughout the short which just goes to show you that not everything was researched back then).

Yep, things were certainly different before the Internet.

THE UNIVERSE IN A GLASS OF WINE: Physics Explained Simply and Beatifully By Richard Feynman

$

Science can be an overwhelming subject for a lot of people but when it came to making the subject coherent and worthy of understanding by the layperson, there was no other person on the planet who could make it as fascinating and attainable than physicist Richard Feynman.

In 1961 Caltech brought in Feynman to teach its Intro to Physics class and what subsequently occurred during his tenure was a series of lectures so profound that he earned himself the title, The Great Explainer. Feynman's gift to Physics (and to his students) was his affable way of bringing science down to a level that anyone with a interest in how the world worked could comprehend and in doing so, he elevated the pursuit of truth into a noble quest (you can get his lectures HERE, and trust me, they are worthy of the price).

To give you a taste of how influential Feynman was to many people (including myself), PBS Digital created an amazing short based upon his idea that everything is connected (The Universe In A Glass of Wine) that is not only beautiful and simple, but exhilarating and brilliant.

Check it out after the break.

Top 5 Mobile Games For the Non-Gamer

I'm not a video game guy.  I've tried.  In some ways I envy friends of mine who can play for several hours engaged and having a terrific time playing the latest new release.

Growing up, the first big game system was the Atari 2600.  I never had one.  The closest I came to a game system was playing Starfighter on the TSR-80.

And that got old quick.

Even now, despite having a dusty X-Box and a stack of uncompleted games, when I do want to play something I usually do so on my phone.

So, if you're like me and can't wrap your head around Halo or Call of Duty, check out these five games after the jump.

'BIG ASS SPIDER!' Director Mike Mendez Chats With FOG!

Interview conducted by Stefan Blitz

Although Giant Bug movies have been a stable in genre cinema since the fifties, more recently they've succumbed to uninspired and worse, just plain stupid exercises in storytelling as cheap digital effects have allowed even the microbudget schlockmakers the opportunity to produce their giant ant, roach or arachnid pictures. And even worse, the majority of the Giant Bug films are not only terrible, but they aren't particularly fun either.

Fortunately, there's a new film that puts an end to that, Big Ass Spider!, a ridiculously entertaining film directed by Mike Mendez about a giant alien spider which escapes from a military lab and rampages the city of Los Angeles. After the failure of a massive military strike fails, it is up to a team of scientists and one clever exterminator to kill the creature before the city is destroyed.

The film stars Greg Grunberg (Heroes, Alias), Ray Wise (Twin Peaks, Reaper), Lin Shaye (There's Something About Mary, Insidious), Clare Kramer (Buffy, The Gravedancers) and Lombardo Boyar (The Bernie Mac Show, upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes).

Mike took some time to chat with Forces of Geek about Big Ass Spider!, CGI and possible sequel ideas.

Doc Pomus was born Jerome Felderin 1925 in Brooklyn.

He was a good Jewish boy living with Polio who becomes a blues singer and successful songwriter like so many people do: through a combination of innate talent and being in the right place at the right time.

GROUND CONTROL TO COBBLER BOB: An Animated Tale of Lego David Bowie Retiring Ziggy Stardust

I always wondered if there ever came a time in an artist's life when the persona they put out into the world became more of a burden than an accomplishment, and in this particular Lego animated story, David Bowie (and his then wife Angela) discuss his desire to retire his trippy character Ziggy Stardust and become, well, someone else entirely...with hilarious results.

A definite must-see for Bowie fans.
