26 Interesting Facts About Beer

$

For those of you who read my work with any regularity (I think that's four of you now) you know that I am in a deeply meaningful, long-term relationship with beer which began some twenty + years ago and will probably continue until I die from old-age and/or alcohol poisoning. But the thing with relationships is that unless you have the ability to still find the person/thing you love (even after a multitude of years) interesting, there's a good chance that it will wither and die.

And beer? Well, you keep surprising me sweetheart, I guess it really is true love after-all.

And thanks to Mental Floss' newest video, 26 Interesting Facts About Beer (hosted by my imaginary husband John Green), I not only learned vast amounts of trivia that will ultimately make me appear a genius even after a six-pack of IPA, it has strengthened my love for the best combination of ingredients ever to appear in a glass (that would be: water, yeast, hops and barley).

So check out the video after the break and become a beer facts connoisseur.

You'll be glad that you did.

A VERY RAMBO CHRISTMAS: When S.A.V.A.G.E Stole Santa...or Something

$

I'm a big fan of any show that deviates from its regular storyline in order to incorporate a Xmas message into it's December episode offering simply because the randomness of it leaves me feeling weirdly confused...which is usually caused by an appearance of St. Nick and/or an elf of some kind.

But you have to hand it to the cartoon version of Rambo (yes, there was an actual Rambo cartoon back in the mid-80s in which John Rambo was a force for freedom or whatever made specifically for children) for taking the Xmas episode to a new level of WTF.

Here's the plot: Rambo has a friend named Kris Kaufman who looks exactly like Santa and who is a rocket scientist-now-turned toy maker who gets Santa-napped by the evil forces of S.A.V.A.G.E (Specialist-Administrators of Vengeance, Anarchy and Global Extortion) so that Kris can make weapons for them which will allow them to take over the world. Rambo doesn't take this act of violence well and so he does what any man who has an anger problem and access to weapons would do, goes after them...I think you know how it ends (although not with exploding heads, which would have been kinda cool).

Like I said, Xmas episodes are weird and this is one of the strangest. So, watch it after the break and have yourself a very Rambo Xmas.

The Best Review of 'Firefly' Ever Written

Back when the video store was king, the people who worked there were looked upon as sages whose vast knowledge of sex comedies or foreign sci-fi horror flicks were as sought after as the world's most learned men and women...My god, how the video clerk was revered and beloved.

But sadly, those days are now long gone but there's no need for the younger generations to miss out on the wise and all-knowing video clerk's reviews of sweet-ass TV shows or movies just because their local movie store has closed down.

For this review of Firefly by "Tom" will stand as proof that when it came to checking out a movie for $3.99 a night, you always invested in whatever the clerk recommended.

Thank you "Tom" for reminding us all what we lost when streaming video was introduced to the masses:

MUSIC VIDEO TUESDAY: Christmas Rappin'- Kurtis Blow

Yeah, yeah, yeah...I know that when you turn to old skool Xmas rap you're likely to choose Christmas In Hollis by Run-DMC (or you go the more obscure route with Chillin' with Santa by Derek B) but don't forget about Kurtis Blow's seminal holiday rhyme Christmas Rappin' (which has a double meaning, you know 'cause people wrap gifts...whatever).

You may only know Blow from his song The Breaks, but back in the wee 80s, his lyrical poetry was something a lot of people made out to (including this Xmas tune), so take a listen after the break and perhaps download the song as part of your holiday music list.

You'll impress a whole lot of over-35 year-olds, I promise you.

Action auteur RYOO Seung-wan comes back to the genre with his most ambitious project yet pitting Korea’s most charismatic actors HA Jung-woo, RYOO Seung-bum and HAN Suk-kyu against each other in the twisty tale of political intrigue and personal redemption, THE BERLIN FILE.

A tense illegal arms deal in a Berlin hotel suddenly descends into mayhem after a “ghost” agent named Jong-seong (HA Jung-woo) appears on the scene. Secretly watching the deal go down is embattled South Korean intelligence chief Jin-soo (HAN Suk-Kyu), the North Koreans and the US CIA, who are all left trying to decode whether the ghost is a double-agent or taking the fall for a more insidious plot. Myung-soo (RYOO Seung-bum) a young but notorious North Korean agent jumps into these treacherous waters to investigate loyalties of all involved and begins to implicate Jong-seong’s wife, Jung-hee (Gianna JUN), a translator at the North Korean embassy in the German capital. Caught between his love of country and his wife, Jong-Seong must quickly prepare to make the ultimate sacrifice in this thrilling tale of political intrigue.

Set in the present-day, THE BERLIN FILE features a truly star-studded cast bringing together HA Jung-woo, successfully transformed from riveting character actor into Korea’s newest action hero; RYOO Seung-bum, who easily displays dizzying range from psychos to romantic comedy leads, and the glorious return of HAN Suk-kyu, nearly 14 years after playing the iconic role as a South Korean officer who falls in love with a North Korean agent. Also featured is Gianna JUN, who changes gears from recent glamorous turns to become the emotional anchor and heroine of this all too realistic story.

12 DAYS OF ELVES: If You Like Your Holidays Inappropriate and Slightly Off-Putting Then You're Going to Love This

$

Xmas may be 7 days away, but at this point, I'm already over it. Maybe it's due to the high saturation level of holiday festoonery that seems to take place earlier and earlier every year or the fact that I no longer have access to the Hallmark channel where the movie offerings feature single people falling in love with angels, people from the past or grinches with the potential to feel holiday joy if only someone could teach them about love, but whatever is the impetus for this malaise, I'm in it deep.

Of course, if you are feeling the same level of "Meh" as I do and just want to see the holiday season end as quickly as possible, then you might enjoy the 12 Days of Elves by Rocket Monkeys creators Dan Abdo and Jason Patterson.

Completely inappropriate and NSFW and just harsh enough to make you appreciate that not everyone is singing Christmas carols or parceling out cookie bars like a lunatic.

After the break are nine episodes (out of twelve) that have so far been released, I highly suggest you subscribe so that you don't miss the other three.

SANTA PARKOUR

The need to perpetuate the claim that Santa is real is something I can completely understand. Sure, you're basically lying to your children, but it's a good lie, I mean it's important that children keep a bit of innocence in their lives for as long as they can (while realizing early on that not everything in life is based on truth and it's a much easier pill to swallow if that fact is dressed up in a red suit and hands out presents).

Of course, when your children finally do come to grips that you are actually Santa and you lied to them for years, don't be surprised when they become a dreadful teenager who throws deception back into your face via drugs, alcohol or a pregnancy scare. It's kind of a tit-for-tat thing.

But if you are hellbent to keep your offspring in the dark a bit longer and are barraged by questions like, "How does Santa get into people's houses?" or "How does an overweight man manage to haul his fat ass up to the roof?" show them this video of Santa doing parkour.

It's a bit ridiculous sure, but no more so than telling kids that someone sneaking into their house on December 25th is an elf, while on any other day he's a burglar.

Apparently Cats Are Getting Into the Knockout Game Now

$

My cat unfortunately passed away this past summer after 11 years of being an asshole to me. Don't get me wrong, I loved that furball more than I do certain family members, but unlike my dog Walter (who has no problem showing affection), my cat's love was something she only offered when she felt like it (usually on cold Winter nights and she needed to warm herself by laying directly on my face as I slept) and when she did show it to me, I was overcome with thanks.

Of course, she spent more time trying to tear off my skin rather than nuzzling me, but if you are a cat owner, you know that treading softly between the playful swats and the "I'm going to rip off your face" comes with the territory.

And the lady in the following video learned that the hard way.

From the various reports that I've read, the cat in the video was feral and most likely trying to get at the woman's dog's food and the woman was just trying to save her dog from certain annihilation (although after watching the video a few dozen times I have to assume that this was some kind of ruse by both the cat and the dog in order to rough up the woman a'la the Knockout Game, judging by how absolutely nonplussed the pup seems when his owner get her ass kicked).

Lesson learned from watching this video? If you kick snow in a cat's face, you should probably be covered in combat gear.

Can a review come out in December and not be a gift suggestion?

Probably not! We do the cool down lap on the Cosmic Treadmill this year with our favorite short run series of the year, Francesco Francavilla's breakout pulp hit Black Beetle Volume 1:No Way Out from Dark Horse Comics.

Francavilla's composition, colors, and ink brush line work complement his own script--drawing influences from noir film to The Shadow and Batman.

Our hero looks cool, has steampunk weapons and is 100% creator owned and original. The hardcover version serves as a great gift, even for yourself as a sort of 'reward' for how generous you have been this season!

Google Chromecast: You Don’t Need One, But It’s Still Necessary

Earlier this summer Google joined the very, very crowded marketplace of internet video streaming hardware devices with Chromecast.

For the average users it’s not only largely redundant— between Roku, Apple TV, smart TVs, Blu-ray players, etc., there’s no shortage of devices that will stream Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc. on your TV — but it lacks a lot of content available on its competition.  But the way in which it can bypass content restrictions cable companies have erected makes it a vital addition to the marketplace.

The genius of Chromecast is that it serves as a bridge between your TV and hardware you already own that can stream video, such as your computer, tablet or phone.

The Role Of Music Publishing Companies In Digital Comics #IntelTablets #TabletCrew

$

The demand for digital comics, once considered as an afterthought, has significantly grown in recent times. DC Entertainment rebooted their characters in 2011, and a key measure taken by the company was to introduce Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman in the digital space. The prices of the digital comics sold online were kept the same as their retail counterparts.

According to ICv2, the industry of digital comic books has seen an increase in average revenue consistently during the past three years.

Their estimates reveal that it was $8 million in 2010, $25 million in 2011 and then there was a staggering increase, so the 2012 revenue stood at $70 million.

The growth has also been complemented by consumer spending on tablets, which are quickly becoming the gateway to a number of new readers.

Publishers since the dawn of the first digital comic have been keen on enhancing user experience.

And among the features tried and tested so far, music tracks are gaining praise among the comic community as they add synergy to the digital books.

WHAT DOES THE SPLEEN DO? A 'What the Fox Says' Parody By Some Harvard Medical and Dental Students

$

Harvard Medical and Dental Students recently got together and created a parody video of Ylvis' What Does the Fox Say? because, well, that's what people do now, they make parody videos, and since Harvard has money, at least this video has some decent production values.

For the record, I did not know what the spleen actually did before watching this video, except to say that in every medical show I've ever watched, the spleen is always being removed after a car accident of some kind. I thought it was like an appendix, only instead of possibly erupting inside your body and killing you, it acted as an internal air bag that then had to be taken out of you before it's leaking goo could eat away your innards. So yeah, this video has been very helpful...I guess.

Check it out after the break.

THE POWER OF EMPATHY: An Animated Short on the Importance of Connecting With People

$

Empathy is a key ingredient in creating a life that is full of connection: to other people, to situations, to the world. And it is the one element that humans have the most difficulty with. After-all, the temptation to be true to only oneself and to ignore other people is a trait that has been within us since our very beginning, it allowed us to survive.

But considering that we have the ability to question our own motives and make changes, it seems reasonable to assume that as we humans evolve intellectually, there's a good chance that empathy could end up being the one aspect of our humanity that can save us all from certain annihilation (and I'm speaking of our desire to end up killing ourselves through violence, weapons of mass destruction, or general malaise).

While you may not be familiar with shame and empathy researcher Dr. Brené Brown, this animated short based upon her talk on the power of empathy will certainly help you understand the importance of choosing empathy over sympathy and how it can help change the path upon which humanity is heading.

Yes it's a bit cerebral, but the cuteness of the animation will help the message go down a little easier...as will multiple viewings (hint, hint).

If you grew up in the 80s there is no doubt that you spent many nights reading the horrifying tales contained within one of the most challenged series of books ever created, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. While the nightmare-inducing stories (written by Alvin Schwartz) might have kept you up at night, it was Stephen Gammell's illustrations that were most likely the catalyst for your bone shaking terror.

I mean look at this thing:

Are you telling me that at 7 years old, reading a story illustrated with pencil and ink drawings like this wouldn't make you pee your pants a bit?

Not freaked out yet? Perhaps this one might do it for you:

THE RETURNED (Les Revenants): Season One (review)

Review by Todd Sokolove

Often to the surprise of even some of the most avid watchers of television, some of the best American series these days are in fact remakes of imports.

There are the mega-hits like The Office and American Idol, then there are the shows like In Treatment or Homeland that shouldn't work, but do.

So, it's no surprise that American networks have already set their sights on two of my favorite series from the past year — Britain's Broadchurch for Fox, and the hit French series Les Revenants for A&E.

In the case of both of these, I highly recommend you catch up with the original series before giving the American versions a try.  Those of you already hip to the later mentioned series, airing here on Sundance Channel as The Returned, you're probably counting down the hours to tonight's Season One finale.

Kringles In The Hot Tub, Christmas On The Radio

$

Have you ever been hit on by Mrs. Claus?

I have.

Nothing says Christmas like Mrs. Claus asking me if I've been naughty with my wife as we pose for a picture with her and Santa.

Or she insisting that I join in a photo and sit on her lap.

Such is life when my wife loves Christmas more than I ever could, and insists on seeing Santa Claus despite being in her late 30s.

I oblige, and suddenly I find myself in the story time room at the local Barnes & Noble.

We're the only adults in the winding line without any children, but no one was looking at us funny. At least, I don't think so. Or maybe they thought our kid was running around the aisles until it was our turn. Who knows? All I do know is that Mrs. Claus got fresh with me after she jokingly wagged a finger at my wife for sitting on Santa's lap.

This is adults meeting Santa Claus. Which, I guess, evolves into the Kringles nearly inviting us back to the North Pole for hot tubbing and a view of Santa's other workshop.
