WATCH 2 Clips From CHRONICLE

Paramount may be the current master of found footage movies, after making a ton of money on it's Paranormal Activity films, studios have figured out that they can make these micro-budget found footage films and then make millions of dollars of them. The Devil Inside being the latest edition from Paramount and even though the film has been panned by critics and audiences alike, it was still No. 1 at the box office this past weekend, clearing $33.5 million.

With Chronicle, we have another found footage film, but instead of doing another exorcism retread, the story follows three high school friends who discover they have superpowers, but their friendship becomes estranged when one of them becomes more powerful than the other two.

Now that sounds like a refreshing and original take on the found footage aesthetic. Not much of the story has been revealed from what we've seen so far from the trailer and these two new clips... hopefully this one will be a nice surprise.

The first clip shows the three friends having fun with their new found powers, while the second clip is a bit more serious as the trio explore a deep hole in the ground.

Both clips are pretty solid and effective, let's hope the rest of the film plays out this way.

We can all find out on February 3rd, when the Chronicle hits theaters.

MARVEL Hire ROBERT RODAT To Rewrite THOR 2

According to Deadline, Marvel Studios has gone ahead and hired Saving Private Ryan scribe Robert Rodat (The Patriot, Tall Tale) to rewrite Thor 2 for director Alan Taylor (HBO's Game of Thrones).

The film is set to go into production later this year for a planned release sometime in 2013 with Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek, The Cabin In the Woods) returning as the title character.

Don Payne (Thor, Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, My Super Ex-Girlfriend) wrote the first few drafts of the film, but ended up leaving the film around the same time Marvel let go of then hired director Patty Jenkins (Monster).

With Marvel finally having The Avengers done, it presents the studio with the opportunity to take these sequels into interesting new ground and not have to worry as much about the continuity between all the Marvel universe films to get to a bigger film... a la The Avengers. Especially with Thor 2, since it looks like Loki from the first film is going to be the main bad guy in The Avengers and that film could technically work as a sequel to Thor.

Only time will tell how Marvel is going to handle the stories of these future sequels, but Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 will be the first ones to come out post The Avengers.

No matter what happens, this is a pretty amazing time to be a Marvel comic book fan.

According to THR, Rob Marshall is reteaming with Disney for a film adaptation of Into the Woods, the calssic 1980's Broadway musical written by Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street) and James Lapine.

Into the Woods will be the second collaboration between the director and Disney, the first being Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Marshall told THR that he and his producing partner John DeLuca have singed a two year deal with the studio.

Into the Woods stars several fairytale characters, including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel, with the story following a baker and his wife's attempt to have a family.

Lapine is currently working on the script to the adaptation and Marshall expects new songs for the film by Sondheim.

Marshall first worked with Sondheim back in the 1990's as the choreographer for his Broadway plays A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Company.

Marshall is no stranger to musicals, his directing debut was 2002's Chicago, which was the first musical to win the Oscar for Best Film since 1968's Oliver. He also directed the musical Nine back in 2009, unfortunately Nine didn't receive the rave reviews Chicago did even with Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood,In The Name of The Father, My Left Foot) in the lead role.

Marshall also has The Thin Man in the works which has Johnny Depp attached to star, but there's no word yet on which film will shoot first.

My very first dog was a Great Dane named Nikki that I would ride around the backyard like a horse (I was three).

I don't remember specifics about her but I do recall that she was very sweet and occasionally she would share a bowl of dried dog food with me that would end up giving me a rash on my face due to it's ingredient list that mostly likely included bone and pork asshole.

Good times.

Sneak Peek: LEE & KIRBY: THE WONDER YEARS

$

0

TwoMorrows Publishing is releasing the 58th issue of The Jack Kirby Collector magazine as a special 160-page squarebound edition entitled Lee & Kirby: THE WONDER YEARS. It celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Fantastic Four #1, the two pop-culture visionaries who created the FF, and a decade in comics that was more tumultuous and awe-inspiring than any before or since. Calling on his years of research, plus new interviews conducted just for this book (with Stan Lee, Flo Steinberg, Mark Evanier, Joe Sinnott, and others), the late Mark Alexander traces both Lee and Kirby's history at Marvel Comics, and the remarkable series of events and career choices that led them to converge in 1961 to conceive the Fantastic Four. It also documents the evolution of the FF throughout the 1960s, with previously unknown details about Lee and Kirby's working relationship, and their eventual parting of ways in 1970. With a wealth of of historical information and amazing Kirby artwork, Lee & Kirby: THE WONDER YEARS beautifully examines the first decade of the FF, and the events that put into motion the 1960s era that came to be known as the Marvel Age of Comics

Tuesday, August 8, 1961 was a fairly discouraging day for America. In the headlines, Cosmonaut Gherman Titov completed a 25-hour trip around the Earth which U.S. newspapers called “Russia’s ticket to the moon.” Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev went on television and announced that Russian troops were gathering to terminate Allied-occupation rights in West Berlin. Later that week, construction of the Berlin Wall began. The only good news that day was on the pop culture scene: On 8/8/61, a new magazine called Fantastic Four hit the newsstands. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, its impact on the comic book world was prodigious. Classic comic book stories, at their best, can make you nostalgic for an era that ended before you were born. Lee & Kirby: THE WONDER YEARS captures the feel, the pulse, and the beauty of comics’ greatest era—the 1960s “Silver Age.” For those with fond memories of the Marvel Age of Comics, this “comic book novel” provides many moments of deep nostalgia. For second and third-generation fans, it paints a seductive picture of what it was like to pull a copy of Fantastic Four #1 off the spinner-rack in the late Summer of 1961, when the world was a sunnier place.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Mark Alexander (1955-2011) was a regular contributor to The Jack Kirby Collector magazine, and completed this labor of love just weeks before his recent untimely passing. Loaded with previously unpublished behind-the-scenes details from 1960s Marvel Comics insiders, this thoroughly researched critical analysis of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four explores the accomplishments of the most influential superhero series of all time, and recaptures the experience of growing up with the FF in the turbulent 1960s. Augmented with a plethora of rare Jack Kirby art and other artifacts, it’s a must-read for any fan of comic books, and pop culture in general.

After going through The Bourne Legacy, Universal is looking to make Robert Ludlum's final novel into a new movie.

According to Deadline, the studio has hired writers Irwin Winkler and Jose Ruisanchez to pen the script. The Sigma Protocol is the last book that Ludlum wrote before his passing. The studio hopes to build the story into a franchise that could last multiple films.

The novel is centered around a man on vacation in Switzerland. His trip takes a dramatic turn when he runs into an old friend only to witness him murder six people in cold blood. This ordinary gets thrown into a story of conspiracy and has to run for his life.

Winkler says “Unlike Bourne, who is a trained assassin, this is an innocent guy traveling in Europe who gets in way over his head. And it has all the great Ludlum intrigue.”

Universal has been working on the project since 2002 and at one time had Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway attached with Antoine Fugua set to direct.
