STAR TREK Sequel Gets A Composer, Release Date, And 3D!

Though we know nearly nothing about the sequel to 2009's STAR TREK (except that the original cast will return, as will J.J. Abrams, and Benicio Del Toro is in talks to play the main baddie), now we also know what day we can see the film, who will compose the music for the film, and the fact that the film will be shot in 3D.

Deadline reports that the yet to be titled sequel to 2009's reboot/sequel/prequel will be released May 17th, 2013.

Deadline also claims the movie will be shot in 3D! Though I normally avoid 3D movies like the plague, STAR TREK is the perfect franchise to showcase the format, especially since it is actually going to be shot that way and not given an ugly post-conversion facelift.

But that's not all, Coming Soon reports that composer Michael Giacchino will be back to write the music for the STAR TREK sequel (I keep calling it that because it WON'T be called STAR TREK 2).

This is more wonderful news, as I LOVE Giacchino's score from 2009's TREK. In fact, I consider it my favorite score in years, rivaled only by the scores for THE DARK KNIGHT, SHERLOCK HOLMES, and INCEPTION (which are all from Hans Zimmer).

Giacchino is a long time Abrams collaborator, composing the music for M:I:III, LOST, ALIAS, and SUPER 8 as well as writing scores for several Pixar films including THE INCREDIBLES and UP.  He also composed the music for the new STAR TOURS attraction at Disneyland, as he is heir apparent to John Williams. His next score will be for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL.
