Paul Thomas Anderson's (Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood) next film The Master is one of the most anticipated films of 2012/2013.
The Master takes place in the 1950's and follows a drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls under the spell of a charismatic leader (The Master, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) of a new religious belief system called The Cause, who's gaining a highly growing and devoted following. The drifter also takes a liking to The Master's daughter (Amy Adams).
It's been rumored that The Master is based loosely on the beginnings of Scientology and it's creator L. Ron Hubbard, since there are some distinct parallels between the story of The Master and the founding of Scientology, but Anderson and all involved with the film deny that theory.
